  • Greetings fellow Dan fans !
We are back with another rarity. This time we present to you one of, if not THE highest quality version of the unreleased Gaucho song 'Talking bout my home,' recreated by Michael Caplin.
As for regular uploads, we are both currently quite busy with studies and other things so we still try to get a video out from time to time. One upload I've been pondering on for quite some time is a collection of almost all unreleased Steely Dan songs (those we have access to). Until then, enjoy our other content and take care!
    Donald Fagen - Vocals
Michael Caplin - Keyboard, Guitar, Drums
    enjoy :)

How did the Gaucho sessions produce literally a whole new album full of outtakes/unreleased tracks that are all some of the Dan’s best tunes?? Fagen needs to compile these into an album and release them!

Fitting the first song of the Album was Babylon Sisters, The Tower of Babylon being mankind’s attempt at reaching God’s domain, God in turn creating language division to divide humanity, trade out language division for record label demands and accidental tape deletion and hard drug use

Originally this was called 'Megashine City' ; it had slightly different lyrics and was written in late 1972 / early 1973 to serve as a live vehicle for original SD lead singer David Palmer. This is closer to the original tempo, the 1979 demo thatt serves as basis for this version are -and that came out w/ 'The Lost Gaucho' outtakes has half time drums. Here the arrangement and groove get a 'Time Out Of Mind' - like feel. Nice job, Michael Caplin, very fine, stylistically on point arrangement, great lead guitar parts....
PS: i reckon these outtakes get 'leaked' by personnel involved, either engineers or musicians who had either copies or maybe access to original 2 Inch tape?
And i also reckon Donald is fully aware they circulate and does not mind. I feel his attitude is 'fair enough let them hear it and realizes as to 'why' we never included them in official releases..' But this here is such a great song, I wonder if The Don would ever consider (and perhaps concede?) that at the end of the day, even on their most 'non approved' , 'reject' songs, him and Walt still wrote some darn good tunes, far and away above the vast majority of their contemporaries...

I so agree with the person below. For me, this is the strangest song in the entire Dan catalogue. Brite Nightgown was about Death, but this song is about someone who just died and is experiencing a home-coming. It's actually one of their most optimistic (if I read it right) songs.

Thanks for this. I don't like the original from the 1972 era. Just lacks personality because they didn't have one yet. But this tells the story of what they became. I'm not sure how much "recreation" is involved (?), but it's beautifully done. Is it remastered or recreated? I only ask because it sounds good enough to just be very well remastered. Whatever the case, this was a mighty fine late discovery for me because I'd only heard the original Megashine City demo. This is surely destined to get a lot of views.
