    Thank you so much for this video! I don't have much experience with soldering, but I managed that even if "you forgot to press record" ;)
    Only negative point: the booster I ordered has a pin more than yours and it's bit too wide... the case does close properly for about 1mm, but the screws and some Dremel work managed that!
    Also, the battery lifetime is impressive: more than 10 hours with low-medium screen brightness!

    I did a mod but with an old DS lite battery and a recycled power boost board from an old dead battery bank. Except I connected power to straight to the back of the power jack on the side as opposed to the battery terminals themselves. I wish I would have watched this video again before I did the mod but oh well, lesson learned. It still works, I just have to open the battery door to charge it. When I order the bigger battery and the nicer power boost circuit I will go this route except I will borrow the power jack to charge it. Thanks buddy!

    Awesome build. What type of wire do you use to connect all the components? The red and black wires. Guessing something small like 22AWG? Stranded or solid? Only small gauge wire I have is some "doorbell" wire I bought from RadioShack years ago. Think it's 22AWG solid. I've soldered on this in the past but wasn't sure it was the best. Any recommendations?

    • @Adamstech

      Hi, thanks for watching the video! For the power I recommend 22 AWG wire for the maximum of amperage and for data and the rest just go with normal 24-26 AWG wires, I always use the wires from inside used USB cables

    adding some more info to what I wrote 2 months ago.
    The Lantian module showed in the video has an integrated circuit with the mark "MH-CD42" on it. As far as I know it's a different version of the "more classic" IP5306 (which worked way better, I have some of both types), and both are programmable microcontrollers, that take care of the battery charge and discharge (exact details and original microcode are not known - some Chinese manufacturers are worst than Nintendo regarding info on their products).
    According to what I know, the "MH-CD42" ones do NOT power on automatically when a load gets attached (proved by attempts with loads both below and over 45mA), but it MUST instead be powered on by pressing the pushbutton provided in the package (that some of you might have received). it would seem that the module straight up ignores the load when it's in deep sleep - probably different from "light sleep".
    in some of the packages coming with the Lantian there might be two 300Ohms resistors, and the manufacturers suggest to "solder the two 30Ohms in parallel between VOut and GND to achieve a continuous output". Now, this is absolutely NOT recommended for at least two reasons:
    1- this would discharge the battery _even if the GPi is left alone_ , and a single 2000mAh LiPo (for example) in an unused device would have to be charged approximately every 45 hours, due to the ludicrously large leakage current (33mA) generated by the parallel resistors - not to mention the fact that the four charge LEDs would stay lit for all the time;
    2- the intended load (in this case the Raspberry plus the screen and so on) could experience instability during operation and the battery would get drained much faster.
    what I suggest instead is to leave the switch flipped to "on" and wire an alternate pushbutton which goes to the "KEY" pad on the Lantian module on one pole, and to ground on the other. This way, by powering on the device by pressing the pushbutton once, and then switching it off by pressing it twice, the leakage current stays inside the IC and it should be limited (if the IP5306 datasheet applies to the MH-CD42) to 50μA, which is more than 300 times smaller - this would not only get roughly 4 and a half years to discharge the same battery, but also keep the LEDs off when idle.
    it's not decent by any stretch of imagination if we think that many low dissipation FETs have a leakage current of a few dozens of nA (100 to 1000 times even smaller), but it's leagues better than the "parallel resistors" solution.
    alternatively, one could still press the alternate pushbutton once to power up the module, and then flip the switch. the unit will stay functional during playtime. when powered off, if the switch gets flipped to "off" the module should power off by itself after roughly 30 seconds. this would bring down the leakage current to that of the power FETs on the GPi PCB. but it might be seen as annoying.
    a much more efficient design like the Adafruit Powerboost 1000 - or a generic MCP73871 + TPS61090 combo should be used.

    Does this mod actually work 100%? Charge properly and fully? Reliablt? Discharge and use battery fully?
    I ask becaise so many of these charge/regulator boards state that they are for "18650" batteries, not for lithium batteries in general of varying capacity. It is confusing. It it safe to assume that when a board is for "18650's" that it will chargw higher capacity? Why do a lot of DIY multi actual 18650 charge circuits here on youtube use multiple charge/regulator boards?

Either the battery terminals should be boosting the voltage or the entire unit should be able to run off of 3.7v (The Pi can actually run on 3.3v, but the USB and HDMI require 5V, so the Pi takes the 5v internally and bucks it down to 3.3v).

    If your charger board (of the same type Adam shows in the video) shuts off after 30 seconds, you might have an older batch.
    TL; DR: it sucks, but you might want to try another board from a newer batch.
    According to the M5Stack forum, the IP5306 can be programmed via the I2C protocol through the pins normally used by the LEDs. I have no direct proof of this, but it would seem that some batches have been misprogrammed to _always_ disconnect the load after 30 seconds (32 seconds according to the datasheet) no matter the current drawn by it - the datasheet says that the IP5306 turns off the output if it draws less than 45mA for about half a minute. The issue cannot be directly fixed without reprogramming the IC, so if you happen to have such a board it's just a programming error, it's not either the GPi or the booster's fault. You need to get a newer batch of boosters.
    Such boosters can have the code "HW-775", "MH-CD42" or "LANTIAN" on them - or perhaps even others that I don't know. The IC code can be either IP5306 or MH-CD42 but it's the same IC.

    A nice mod, but kind of pointless imho. With good high cap batteries (2700mA) you should get a pretty good runtime. Sure, the internal circuit does boost the voltage, thus reducing the total output amperage, but still, considering that the unit consumes around 350mA, you should get at least 5-6 good hours of gameplay out of it. Id say thats more than enough gameplay time per day, not to mention way easier than modding it. But hey, to each his own, still a cool mod.

    • @Adamstech
      @Adamstech  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching! Well, each with their own how you said, but the biggest drawback is the fact that you got to buy batteries and charge them outside in a charger, which no one can argue is more convenient. Add the possibility to charge wherever you are with any port you want ( micro USB, type c ) and that makes it quite better than carrying the case a charger and batteries.

      😂😂 Well let me break it up to you, 3 eneloop batteries are in series not parallel, pease Google it, and find that capacity doesn't stack up in this case as you need to stack up voltage, sorry to break it up to you but with 3 Eneloop you got 2500 mAh. As for my mod, I made it so I don't have to swap batteries like in 80s and to have it rechargeable

    I have 3 rechargeable batteries of 2000 mA, they are 6000 mA without modifying anything.

      It doesn't stack up in that way mate, you stack up voltage in your case, so you have 2000 😁
