    The thing I love about this movie is how well Gary Oldman "plays down" to the role. He's the best Commissioner Gordon I've ever seen and the truest to the comic book. Almost all the roles he's known for are dialled up to 11 and completely unstable (The Professional, Immortal Beloved, Sid & Nancy, Fifth Element). You're exactly right, everybody in this movie is so "theatrical," and his performance is so muted and gentle in contrast to the costumed melodrama happening around him. It's a really good performance BECAUSE he doesn't stand out.

      Canonically Batman does not blame himself for his parent's death. Nor does he fear bats. Those touches were added by Nolan. And I've always thought them a bad idea, rather indicative of Nolan's failure to understand Batman.
      Bruce adopted the bat motif because, as he says, criminals are a cowardly and superstitious lot. And thus liable to fear strange creatures of the night like bats.
      Batman does, however, hold criminals responsible for the death of his parents. Originally the mugger who killed Thomas and Martha was unnamed, and never identified. Which makes any criminal a stand-in for the one who killed his parents. Thus Batman dedicates his life to his war on crime, seeking both to punish his parents' killer (who is likely to eventually attract batman's attention for some other crime) and to prevent any other kid from losing their parents the same way he did.
      I guess the folks at DC eventually figured that Batman couldn't be the World's Greatest Detective if he couldn't even solve his own parents' murder, and so they gave him a name and had Batman put him away. This has always seemed a mistake to me. Catching his parents' killer undercuts Batman's primary motivation to fight crime. What drives Batman to seek vengeance upon criminals if he's already gotten his vengeance against the one criminal who mattered to him? And hell, in this movie, Joe Chill is dead long before Bruce becomes Batman, further weakening his motivation.
      Which is why I've said ever since this movie came out - It's the greatest Batman movie ever made...that doesn't have Batman in it.

      @@flatebo1 I 1000% disagree. Batman isn't about getting vengeance on criminals. Ever since the 70s when we introduced the concept of the GCPD and the level of corruption in Gotham its been about fighting against the conditions that bred the man that killed his parents. That's why giving Joe Chill his name is significant because it makes Batman's motivation bigger than just revenge. Its about preventing other children from enduring the agony and trauma that he did and its about fighting against the disease of corruption in Gotham. Canonically, Batman may not have a fear of Bats but come on man. Its a wonderful addition to the mythos that adds to Bruce's decision to become Batman. It's not a cardinal sin. Also, Bruce 100% has always blamed himself on some level for his parents deaths. In every version of the death of the waynes it is always Bruce's idea to go see the Mark of Zorro. In some comics, they deal with that guilt and in some they don't. Just because its something that gets added later in the mythos doesn't make it invalid or untrue to the character. Its just deepening it.

    • @flatebo1
      @flatebo1 3 года назад +2

      @@justarandomveryintelligent8934 Keeping the identity of the Waynes' murderer anonymous also makes Batman's goal more general as his war on crime is not a personal war of retribution but a general war on all criminals.
      And yes, later additions to the mythos are not necessarily invalid. But they aren't necessarily improvements, either.
      Batman's entire life revolves around his war on crime. War on Crime. His goal is to save the innocent form the evil and corrupt. It isn't to inspire the wicked to become better. That's Superman's thing. Batman exists to terrify the guilty. Everybody wants Superman to look upon their deeds and smile. Because that means Superman approves of their actions. No one wants Batman to look upon their deeds and smile. Because that means Batman is about to have some fun.

Like Bruce does like parts of the playboy lifestyle but he exaggerates it to seem a drinker pursuing models and he does like detectivework but he intentionally (except to friends) makes Batman seem like he _lives_ in a secret lab somewhere and only comes out to hunt.

    What I loved most about The Dark Knight trilogy is that Nolan showed what it would realistically(well as realisitic as one can get with a comic book movie)take for Bruce Wayne to be Batman. Gary Oldman as Lt. Gordon(Comissioner later on) gave a great perfomance and one of the best versions of the character to date. And Batman got his name not only from his childhood fear of bats, but in the comics he was in his study one night trying to decide what symbol he would use. A bat crashed through the window, and inspiration struck. Also fun fact, Johnathan Crane(aka The Scarecrow) is deathly afraid of bats in the comics(ironic huh?)

    Hey Nat, I do like the dialogue and the use of defining lines repeated by different characters; especially the one Batman uses to Rachel "it's what I do that defines me." Glad that you liked it.

    I cry almost as much as you did during this movie. I must have seen it thirty times by now, an it never fails to move me. I was a fan of Batman as a kid, and I saw each of the theatrical films when they opened since 1989. But this was the Batman movie I had been waiting for, without really knowing it. The focus is on Bruce instead of being stolen away by the flashy villains. One of my all time favorites...very glad you liked it as well.
