And when you remember that Thomas Wayne was a surgeon, it's like he was prepared all his life for this moment. So meaningful. People usually forget what an amazing writer Frank Miller is when given the right material.
Him naked in the darkness talking to Batman always give me goosebumps! This graphic novel was the first time anyone had dealt with what the psychological consequences would look like in someone like Bruce. He's insane, but he sublimates his rage, self-hate, and desire to inflict pain on the world that took his parents from him, into a crime fighting crusade.
This film and part 2 are so good and Peter Weller voicing a 55 year old Bruce Wayne, Mark Valley voicing Superman and David Selby voicing Jim Gordon are great in this film and second part. Michael Emerson when enters the scene in Part 2 holy crap he embodies the chaos, anarchy, will make himself and his opponent lose control. Emerson's Joker to me is the most underrated Joker. He also played a good villain in Arrow season 6 and of course lets not forget Lost and Person of Interest.
I was resisting the urge to look it up but I was sitting here just like who the hell is Batman that voice sound so familiar who the hell is Batman I'm so glad somebody finally posted it because it was driving me nuts but I was trying not to cheat by looking it up 😅
Haven’t even finished this vid but I cant wait for u guys to watch pt2 and that whole carnival sequence, its one of my favorite Batman scenes from any movie.
I liked how this movie showed that Batman is not average street brawler but the martial arts master who knew all those pressure points in human body combined with his medical knowledge about surgery (Bruce always wanted to become a Surgeon like father when he was kid) and brilliant tactician who can use conditions to his favour.
I would really love a old man Logan style Batman movie with the most retro-ish vibe they can ever pull off, almost everything about it having a horror-esq tone to it.
It had to be weird in '86 reading it for the first time and Gordon dropping the line: "...after what happened to Jason." Jason wasn't killed off until '88.
@@kaiphan1346 they don't come out and say it, he could've meant a litany of reasons. Is Jason dead? In prison? Quit? Became a villain himself? It was just interesting that Miller floated that random line of dialogue in the comics and Dennis O'Neil used it for probably one of the more memorable stories in comic book history.
Pretty much this film/comic in many ways is the sequel to Batman: Year One with Frank Miller even stating that his Year One is the backstory of the Batman we see in Dark Knight Returns. Year One is one of those comics that can be seen as both the origin of the mainline Batman (Post Crisis, Prime Earth) but also Frank Millers Dark Knight universe as well with Dark Knight Returns branching off from the mainline universe when Robin died and Batman retired. So you can 100% watch the animated Batman: Year One and look at it as a prequal to The Dark Knight Returns or as an origin story to pretty much 99% of Batmen. A Side note but this film is set in 1986 it just has a very Robocop retro futurism look and feel to it with Robocop even pulling ideas from The Dark Knight such as the news reports and overall tone and feel. Batman is even voiced by Peter Weller the actor who played Robocop in the first and second film along with his Mortal Kombat appearance and in the new Robocop game coming out. Batman himself retired in 1976 so just a decade before this film.
I so want you guys to react to Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker as well! I know it's not in this "DCAU" but it is such a good animated Batman movie, IMO!
Dude, this is NOT a DCAU movie. Why is everyone getting it wrong? The DCAU (DC Animated Universe) is comprised ONLY of Batman the Animated Series, Batman Mask of the Phantasm, Batman & Mr. Freeze SubZero, Superman the Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, Batman Mystery of the Batwoman, Batman Beyond, Batman Beyond Return of the Joker, Static Shock, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. The rest are just DC animated movies that are not part of the DCAU. Please learn the difference.
You guys should absolutely react to the 2004 “The Batman” animated series. It’s a remarkable example of “the more things change, the more they stay the same”. A lot of the characters and especially designs are radically different from the comics, yet the essences of the characters are alive and well in them (see it’s version of the Joker as an example).
Highly highly recommend Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths at some point. It has an effective villain, solid voice acting, fun action and I was into the way they handled the mirror universe while poking at certain themes. Plus an ICONIC (in my opinion) quote from Batman to himself.
The Dark Knight Returns is one of my favorite Batman comics and this is one of my favorite animated DC movies! I cannot wait for y’all’s reaction to Part 2
This was one of my first animated movies I had watched with Batman in it, and it made me fall in love with the animated world. It’s just so good, this and p2 are amazing together
Simply the best Batman story ever. The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises and The Batman, Batman Vs Superman and Zack Snyder's Justice League all take scenes or lines or Batman tech directly or verbatim from this story. Great reaction lads.

So glad you guys mentioned the score. This film has one of my favorite Batman themes to date. Honestly I'm still just blown away by how perfect of an adaptation these films are. I wish DC took a less linear, more non-sequential approach to their animated adaptations. Nowadays everything is a shared universe, which means identical art styles and voice actors. It limits creativity and forces the filmmakers to conform instead of truly adapting the style of the original stories, not to mention it'll be a good while before anyone tries to adapt these stories again since the excuse will be "well, we've already done it, so why bother?". It's why the Hush and Death of Superman movies didn't quite land for me, along with most of the DCAMU. Too same-y, yet they're already repeating that mistake with the Tomorrowverse. Can you imagine how much better The Long Halloween 2-parter would've been if it had kept to the art of the comic and didn't have to stay in line with the other movies?
@@lordquas97 yeah I get that. Constantine wouldn't have been my first choice either, but I thought it's draw more attention after Justice League Dark.
Love your reactions guys. Again though this is not a DCAU (DC Animated Universe) film (Coy you really have to learn the difference). The DCAU is comprised of Batman the Animated Series, Superman the Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Static Shock, Justice League and Justice League Unlimited.
I lol’d when Coy said, “Frank is 80 years old,” because I’ve been re-reading some Miller stuff recently and looked up his age and he’s 66. That dude has lived hard.
This has one of my favorite fight scenes ever in the rematch Batman has with the mutant leader. Not only is it more exciting than the original comic, it also has one of my favorite one liners ever when he says *“This isn’t a mud hole, it’s an operating table, AND I’M THE SURGEON”!* And to top it off he breaks the leaders arm with an armbar and then to keep him from struggling out breaks his knee with a kneebar and then ground and pounds him till his face is like hamburger.
In a similar vein to this one, the animated version of Batman: Year One is pretty great, but I'd really love to see you react to Batman: Gotham Knight. It's an anthology film, with I think four different Japanese studios doing six different segments of the film, each of which can basically stand on their own as a short, but they're still telling a larger story at the same time. Pretty unique film, and a very fun watch.
@@Benji568 That's totally fair, but I'd also recommend watching past the first 10 minutes, or rather the first short in the anthology. The animation style changes for every one of the six segments, and the first one is definitely the most... stylized, for lack of a better term. The other five look more like western animation than the first.
@MandoC okay. I do have it on DVD as part of a collection. Been six years since I watched them tho. Mainly bought it for Phantasm, Year One and Under The Red Hood. There is an updated collection which includes some of the later DCAMU movies but it's so overpriced here in the UK 🇬🇧.

Miller's dialogue was always amazing
Mine is "All the people I've murdered, by letting you live" the pain Batman must've felt admitting that
And when you remember that Thomas Wayne was a surgeon, it's like he was prepared all his life for this moment. So meaningful. People usually forget what an amazing writer Frank Miller is when given the right material.
They also used that line in an episode of The New Batman Adventures where the Frank Miller Batman was voiced by Michael Ironside (Darkseid!)
My favorite is "their is a difference between you and me we both looked into the abyss but when it looked back at us you blinked." One of the best.
