Andy, the mystery man in black, you don’t understand how excited I get when you bring out these legendary acoustic lessons. Can’t wait to spend countless hours learning this piece. Thanks for everything you do, stay safe.
Christmas 1966, I was 13 and had been struggling with a horrible Sears catalogue guitar for a couple years. My teacher told my parents “he really needs a better guitar”. My father took me to a music store on Yonge street and we picked out an amazing made-in-Italy Eko 6-string. Someone else gave me a copy of the Sounds of Silence LP and I spent hours learning the songs. Being a baritone, the tenor vocal parts were impossible, but Anji was a great solo guitar piece. By 16 i had it 90% right. I performed it whenever I got a chance and it has been my go to solo guitar piece ever since. Some years later, I pickup up a tab for the piece and got it to 95% right. Now, retired from a career in science, I’m a guitar maker and repair guy. And so glad with your help, I can finally raise Anji to 100%. You always do great videos, but this one goes straight to my heart. Thanks so much, Andy!
He's pretty good but idk there was a sizeable chunk of this tutorial where he just went "do this" then played it at half speed without elaborating. Could have done more to explain the stuff from the 10:00-13:00 minute mark
Lol..i found this cassette lesson at my local library,...with tablature....What A Treasure....yep took me forever to work out,...mostly I picked pieces by ear, from tab....worked the bass line.....then tryd to put it all together, then come up to tempo....What a challenge.....it taught me a lot that I still use....now I'm temping my son to Pik it out....
I don’t think people talk enough about how good of a guitarist Paul Simon is. Because his songwriting is so good I think his actual playing gets overlooked sometimes
Anji is an acoustic fingerstyle guitar piece composed and recorded by noted folk guitarist Davy Graham in 1961. Paul Simon must've picked it up when he was over here in the early 60s. He must've lived in Brentwood in Essex as he went out with a girl from there called Kathy (yes that Kathy,) who incidentally took the dinner money at my junior school St Helen's.
Holy crap...yes!! I would actually love to see you explore Simon’s playing some more. He was quite excellent. It took me several years to master his Bach-influenced “American Tune.” Such a great learning experience. I’ve been playing over 30 years and think you’re the best on RUclips, dude! Thanks again.
Coincidentally this song has been showing up a lot on RUclips recommendations lately. Was hoping for a tutorial and you've come through with an awesome one. Thanks Andy!
Thank you so much for this. I've playing this song for decades, and your video helped me identify places where I've been playing it wrong. Your videos are consistently the most accurate, and I think your teaching style is the best. Thanks again.
“You’ll never play it fast if you can’t play it slow. Any problem you have with guitar, just break it down and play it slow.”. Sage advice from an outstanding musician. Thanks for this superb breakdown of Anji.🎸🎶🎼
Like a lot of others here, I've been playing for 50 years and have always wanted to get my fingers around this. Nearly there! Thanks Andy, donation just made.
Great video! You are very clear and present the history, your personal struggle with the sticky parts, as well as offering excellent advice about how to approach and play it. It was so rewarding to listen to and examine. Thank you.
OMG. This will keep me busy! I appreciate all the work you put into your videos and am SO grateful when you create tabs for sale. I'll just take chunks at a time and have faith that I can nail it eventually. I'm already seeing progress after a couple hours. (I recommend your channel whenever I can and feel so good about donating to you.)
Can't believe you are giving this away for free! Thanks so much! Best part is the way you slow play it so that the picking is clearly coming through. Awesome man!
Thanks @kiranand. I put a huge amount of time and effort into making these videos. I like to keep them free for those that can't afford it, but if you can, please support what I do. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html
Really brilliant lesson - thanks so much Andy!!! I thought this was way above my level - but then when you said that it took you a while to get the 'crazy bass line' section in sync that was actually really encouraging to hear. After a lot of work, I've now got the first section sounding half-decent (at around 100bpm) and it just feels so cool to play. I've sent a donation and hope many others will too because you bring a lot of happiness to a lot of people.
Thanks so much for this lesson! I always thought I had the Paul Simon version down and turns out there were a few parts I’ve missed out when playing this super cool rendition and this lesson will certainly keep me going to work on the rest. Nice one 🙂👍
Once i get big love down , this 'll be a breeze ! I still find the bert version on his eponymous 1st album the definitive one , it's a bit more savage ! , and its got those flamenco style strikes in
Is there anything you can't play? Anyway, thanks for sharing your talent with us mere mortals. Watching you weave magic on a guitar in that black background has been fun ever since I first stumbled upon your channel.
You'll never see Paul Simon on any top 100 lists but he truly was a one man band and an influence to many a guitarist in mid to late 60's. A shame they broke up @ their peak. Always loved this tune. Great breakdown.
I have literally been playing a facsimile of this song for decades. The hardest part I've found is playing the bass line with the treble line, I always end up skipping some notes in the bass line. Each part separately isn't that bad, it's putting them together which takes a ton of coordination.
This is an amazing representation of this song. I think that it was played tremendously well. A song that I would love to see taught on this channel, by Andy, is Pacing The Cage, by Bruce Cockburn. There aren't really any "lessons" per se on RUclips, so That could be a good one. I'd love to hear it, keep up the good work!
It’s now my 3rd day and probably 12th nonstop hour learning this. Just about halfway done watching the video. Keep working, you’ll get it.😂 hope I’m not the only one struggling, the sound of my metronome is slowly driving me insane
@@squidwarf I’m assuming you are talking about the hammer on. You would lift the a minor shape off the fretboard, and then hammer on the first feet of the g string. The way I do it is just lift up the a minor chord, pluck the open g string, and quickly hammer down my fingers in the open r major chord position. Hope this helps, if not let me know and I’ll try and figure out what it is you’re talking about
Hi thanks for this lesson I really like the song. Maybe next time you could do an other from Simon and Garfunkel I also really like. It's Bleeker's street, what do you say ?
When you play the B minor chord you really need to hit the B as the bass note instead of the F# you're using. Only on the first intro you use the B, and it sounds way better. Paul Simon plays it consistently that way. (relative to the capo, we're talking about the A minor chord, A as a bassnote instead of E)
Dave. On the studio version, which is the version my tutorial is based on, he definitely plays the F# over the Bm throughout the song: ruclips.net/video/1JxMHL9h-W0/видео.html On this live version he's playing the B note over the Bm: ruclips.net/video/jkDT2aTI2ls/видео.html which is how Davy Graham played it: ruclips.net/video/qXhWgbmc9yU/видео.html and also the way Bert Jansch did it: ruclips.net/video/RqjUWJtH88c/видео.html Whether or not it "sounds better" is merely your opinion. It's subjective. They're just different flavors. Cheers, Andy.
i wonder if you would do the bert jansch version... for me its better version with a few added fancy bits like the spanish style roll. gives the song a bit more punch
Brilliant song choice Andy! Paul Simon had some great acoustic masterpieces off that album...any of them are great songs to learn...bravo! Just wondering if you have found a RUclips contributor going by the handle 'Muchie'. He's posted some great covers of Paul Simon...including "Mrs. Robinson", "April Come She Will", "Overs", etc. People should check them out... thanks again Andy!

Didn't we all start out with that awful twenty dollar Sears Silvertone guitar?
Cool story bro

I second this. Paul Simon is really underrated and a master of creating perfect accompaniment parts.
Who knew the first two chords every guitarist learned could be so complex. Awesome tutorial, beautiful song!

This is a fantastic underrated song, I'm still working on getting the dynamics and the crazy fingerpicking. Good job, keep it up
His dynamics are unparalleled on RUclips. That's IMHO. Just watch how his thumb is working!!!
Geeze, may as well aim high!!!

Beautiful! Nicely done, Andy!
Excellent lesson for this most iconic tune...If you can play this you've arrived.

Beautifully done!
this is an amazing arrangement n lesson man
Best thing about Saturday...no work and your posts 🙂
Originally by fingerpicking hero Davy Graham, it's Paul Simon's rendition which made the song famous
2:44
First person I heard perform this was Bert Yansch, before Simon's rendition.
Davy Graham composed it. Bert Jansch popularised it among fellow guitarists in the UK. Paul Simon picked it up and took it to an American audience.
That’s rubbish - Bert Jansch’s version made it famous not Paul Simon!!

Beautiful tutorial, thanks a lot :)
