I walked in to a thrift store in Carson City, Nevada the other day. Inside the glass case on the shelf was a Minolta X-570 (strangely the exact camera I had been researching/wanting in the weeks prior). I asked to look at it and it was extremely clean. When I removed the lens cap I saw that the lens was an MD Rokkor-x 50mm 1.4, also super clean. Now for the best part, the price tag for both said $22.00, but since it was 50% off day if you "check in" the thrift store on Facebook (which I happily did), I walked out with the whole setup for $11.00. Best. Thrift Store Find. Ever.

I live in Vermont. I made a list of all the thrift shops, both locally and some over an hour away. Even if I go out and shoot on the weekends, I still make it a point to visit the same stores as often as possible. My #1 tip is to create a relationship with the shop owners/directors if you can. That way if they get some neat stuff in, you'll get a call before it even hits the shelf. I've found a few great deals and it always takes me back 10 years lol

I love 110's and pick them up whenever I see them. They key to thrift shops/charity shops is to be persistent and go on a regular basis. I go hunting for anything Yashica and Olympus Mju, most of the time I come back with nothing but every now and then I've picked up cameras from £1 to about £10 which makes it all worth while.

I've just started collecting old film cameras this year and have gotten a bunch of cameras already. they are from local thrift shops, garage sales, estate sales. Sometimes, I'll just ask people at garage sales for old cameras and a lot times we just exchange numbers in case they know of someone with cameras looking to sell - I've got some good deals on analog cameras that way too at a bargain price. Lately, a lot of people have been starting this trend of rescuing these old analog cameras so the market can be scarce at times but diligence pays off eventually. Check out flea markets too if your area has them, they are a good place to look for these old analog cameras as well!

Another source is Church rummage sales. My Dad found some pretty good stuff there very cheap $5-10 USD. He got an Olympus XA, Kodak Duoflex II and recently a Anscocet aka Minolta Uniomat. He gives it to me since I collect vintage cameras. I think he also enjoys finding old cameras that he used in the past. The Goodwill shops where I live don't have much in the way of vintage. Probably due to pickers selling on eBay. Glad you scored with those nice camera and gear.

Like that little 'Crayola' 110 camera. 110 cameras in particular seem to be common at thrift shops, garage sales, rummage sales, etc. I'm a '35 mm film guy' have three Nikon 35 mm film SLR's plus lenses, etc. but I'm always on the lookout for 'vintage' or 'iconic' camera buys. Keeping my eyes open for one of those 'weather resistant' 110 cameras in particular..seems to me Minolta used to make one..the 'Weathermatic' or something. None of my cameras are 'weather or water resistant'. One of those 110 'weather resistant' cameras would be perfect for carrying for say snow skiing, to the beach, or what have you. And fun to shoot to boot. And those are the types of cameras likely to run across during 'camera thrift shopping'.

I'm from Michigan to start, but before I was born my grandpa had an Canon AE-1 Program. When my grandparents got divorced my grandma took his camera, when my grandma passed away in August last year we went down to Oklahoma for her funeral and to sell the house gather sentimental belongings, pictures, valuables. we brought the camera back home, and my grandpa gave it to me saying "I haven't even seen that camera in 20 years, you can have it, you'll probably use it more anyway". It's been almost a year later and I have 12 cameras in my collection now including an original Polaroid model-1 SX-70 of my own assembled on March 4th, 1974, the film door doesn't latch closed but I put a rubber band around the right side of the camera to hold everything in place, it can be collapsed while the rubber band holds it. (So if anyone ever has a Polaroid SX-70 with a broken film door latch, use a rubber band to hold it closed it will still function properly).

Film sensors just seem so much more forgiving than finding a cheap low megapixel digital. I picked up a AF35M from a goodwill and I've taken some amazing portrait photos. And with film it seems like it could be blown up without becoming really pixelated like digital. I could be wrong. But film is amazing

You're right Mike, there is some great stuff to be found and used.
Sometimes, I feel like I might be the uncrowned king of charity shop finds among to film shooting community. I've probably bought 60-70 cameras this way over the past 3-4 years. I've sold some, but have kept most. I've bought several Olympus XAs and Stylus Epics for just $2 each, tons of Polaroids for $4-5 each, including half a dozen Auto 250s, several SLRs and TLRs, enlargers and darkroom equipment, a couple of SX-70s for less than $10 each, a minty Rollei 35 with case for just $5, and as you said, the coup de gras, a gorgeous 1954 Leica IIIf with 50mm Summicron collapsible for ONLY $29!!! It was in an old binoculars case, behind the counter. I almost didn't ask to see it, but something made me wonder why they were asking $29 for a set of binoculars.
I've found that the best chances, at least where I live, of finding good stuff is early in the week during spring and summer, when people are cleaning out attic, basements, and storage rooms. I'm sure some of it is always estate sale leftovers as well.

On the flipside to the killer deals at thrift shops, I went out to an antique mall yesterday just for s&g, and holy moly all the prices were crazy high! That seems to be the norm at shops dedicated to vintage stuff though.

We have a rather large vintage camera marked here in Denmark as well. However, it is my impression that it is slowly but surely thinning out. After all there is only so many film cameras coming from the private homes. The professional dealers often want a fortune for even the point and shoot models. No need to be a sucker.
    Greetings from Denmark.

Wow, just found your video. I was recently gifted a Canon Autoboy "S" Panorama by my father-in-law. It features a blazingly fast 38-115mm f3.6-8.5 zoom lens (lol). The battery died and the date back displays '97 11 25. There is also an (expired) role of what looks like Fujifilm (Superia?) 400 film but the display shows frame no. 1 so unexposed film. It would have been cooler for me if the film was exposed, I would have developed the film and surprised my 88 year old father-in-law with the photos. Anyway, I just wondered if you have any experience with this likely chain saw sounding camera. Not much info on this on the net. Your thoughts on this camera please? BTW, the SX-70 was one of our family cameras when I was a kid. A trip down memory lane. Thanks!!

You do know I am cutting down on my chances of getting a bargain buy by replying?
This is partly useful advice for the world though.
First thing is to carry around 2 x AA batteries and a cr123 since these fit most cameras to test out.
I try and buy compacts now because they are of unknown value to most charity shop people.
City centre but good finds are rare.
Yashica was from age concern is it?, on Charles st nr wilko.
There are 2 charity shops there.
The one nearest Humberstone Gate sometimes has good cameras cheap. There's another at clarence hall near sainsburys.
Scope ,belvoir st, rutland st is it?
Its the rd opposite belvoir st and between granby and charles st.
Got an olympus lt 1 and lt-10 the olympus mju 1 based leather cameras for £10 each.
Got a perfect condition olympus trip and flash there for £10, that I wish I'd have kept , but I was desperate for money.
I buy them and sell them on or sometimes keep them.
Theres a sue ryder on loseby lane but they have no idea of pricing, sometimes a crap camera is really expensive and a good one is cheap, a lot of their cameras do not work , and that's why I take batteries.
You need to go a lot and nearly all of the time there are no cameras at all.
If you go enough eventually you will find good things.
My best ever charity shop buy was Leica trinovid binoculars from a charity shop in oakham for £ 10.
They are small and look nothing special to the uninitiated. They were hidden in a pouch, and I sold them on ebay later for £96.

If you're good at fixing cameras you can buy 2 otherwise expensive cameras and lenses cheap on a well known internet auction site and get 1 good one out of them.
You do have to know what you're doing though so I wouldn't recommend it to a beginner.
It also takes some time and money to build up your collection of non working cameras for parts.
My first 2 cameras I attempted I wrecked so if anybody tries this, test out your repair skills on a crappy old camera that isn't worth anything first.
Springs and parts falling out and small parts getting lost were the main problem, so now I bag them and tag them.
Take tons of photos of each stage when you remove something so you can put it back together again.
I buy lots of non working cameras, some of them can be fixed and some can't.
My pet hate is you buy a camera , it says shutter stuck ( which I can fix ) so you buy it and then find the lightmeter doesn't work, the film winder is jammed as well etc etc.
