Germany - The Bogeyman is known as Der schwarze Mann ("the Black Man"). "Schwarz" does not refer to the color of his skin, but to his preference for hiding in dark places, like the closet, under the beds of children, or in forests at night.[21] There is also an active game for little children which is called Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann? ("Who is afraid of the Black Man?"), and an old traditional folk song Es tanzt ein Bi-Ba-Butzemann in unserm Haus herum ("A Bi-Ba-Bogeyman Dances Around in Our House")

Till Lindemann once said, “the interpretation of their songs is clearly up to you”, their songs have so many innuendos and interpretations, that nothing is permitted in imagining. However, “Der Schwarze Mann” is a Bogeyman, not a man with dark skin, there is nothing racist about that.

    • @pami333
      @pami333 Год назад

Not entirely true. Der Schwarze Mann has a double meaning here, refering to both, the Boogeyman as well as PoC, and Rammstein are playing with this - it's about racism and fear of strangers fed to the people from the past until today and how politicians are utilising on this fear, with growing number of extremists in parliaments around the world.
They are also pointing out the racism in old phrases and words, which at least to every German born in the last century should be clear when the band in their stuffy, conservative outfits were eating Schokoküsse ("chocolate kisses"), which in former times have been called Mohrenköpfe ("Moor heads") or Negerküsse ("negro kisses"), which of course they aren't allowed to be called anymore, as those names are rather racist.
Der Schwarze Mann literally is the Boogeyman, a creature hiding in the dark, thus being named 'black' here, not because he's a person of color. But when children were confronted with this, that does not mean they'll understand this (and I know that I myself in Kindergarden was pretty confused when we played Wer hat Angst vorm Schwarzen Mann, as I did understand it literally at very young age, thought it meant 'black man' - causing some childish amusement when playing it with 'black' friends, which in retrospective wasn't actually that funny, as it showed how easy even children can be trapped to be discriminatory. Luckily my friends were my friends after all and too young themselves to really feel discriminated).
Even if this term wasn't meant to be racist, it still kind of became racist over time. The swastika wasn't meant to be a symbole of National Socialism, yet still is mainly associated with the Nazis up until today in the Western hemisphere.

  • @pyrointeam
    @pyrointeam 2 года назад +31

You must know that the Black Man originally has nothing to do with skincolor In German The Black/Dark Man is the name for the Boogeyman. But it is put in a double meaning by rammstein.
6:55 notice how they put up a wall to their neighbors but a fence and deadly weapon towards the outside world (black refugees reference in the beginning and at the end of the video), and when nobody shows up they turn (their fear and aggression) against their neighbors, bringing the whole "system" (Country) to fall.
In the end you can see the refugees and the brainwashed citizens separated but still looking at each other. The band (citizens) eat Super Dickmanns (brand) or Schaumküsse/Schokoküsse (Foam kisses/ choclate kissen) which where called "Negerküsse" (Negro Kisses) until the 2000s. The word Neger (Negro) is historically not really discriminatory but is slowly banned because it sounded to similar to the N-Word and many migrants got offended mishearing it. This all happens under the protest of many conservative people. Many refuse to change the name and still call it Negerküsse.

Hello everyone. I'm German and I've known rammstein for so long that I can't even remember when I heard them for the first time. But one thing is for sure, they treat the first topics in their own way and leave room for interpretation, like in this song angst. in which they sing about the black man and no that has nothing to do with the color of the skin, it's about the boogeyman and fear itself. We are so busy in our time looking at our fears and our surroundings (media, radio, etc.) fuel this fear, and in the end we are so scared that we arm ourselves and shoot ourselves because we know nothing but fear. So mega cool the song is so bitter it is, but at the same time honest and real. And every time the cheerleading part comes they say Du = you. which comes from a child's game, here there is a catcher (the bboogeyman) and the other players trying not to be caught by him. The "boogeyman" stands, for example, at the other end of the sports hall. He shouts, "Who's afraid of the boogeyman? ' while his opponents yell, 'Nobody' You're afraid of the boogeyman? Because the ironic thing is we all (humanity) are Black men (boogeyman).Don't live in fear folks, and Don't let the Fear in you.I can't describe it better because of my English skills. sorry

Hey, I think we got the same thoughts on this:
    1. The song is about how certain "leaders" and media want to scare people to control them. In the video, this is visualised by the red wires, computer screens an TV. Also, the entertainig industry is helping (commercials, online shopping), represented by the cheerleaders.
    2. The dominant colors in the viedeo are black, white and red, which are the colors of the flag of the Kaiserreich and the Third Reich. Also, you can say that the world the people in this video are living in, is just black and white, no grey. It can be understood as a reference to the simple minded people who are for example voting for politicians who are telling them exactly this black/white view (WE are good, THEY are bad). Also, the band is dressed up as the stereotype of this kind of conservative people. Did you noticed that the world in the video changed to color when Till destroyed the TV?
    3. "Der schwarze Mann" (The black man) is a german synonym for a creepy, ghost-like evil. As in the first verse of the song, children are often told "to obey, or else the black man will get you". It can be translated to boogey man in english, but like often, there is another meaning in this context. As said, the video is about leaders who are seedeing fear of anything foreign in peoples minds. So, the phrase "black man" can also be interpreted literally, namely refugees. In my opinion, it is a reference to the migration crisis in 2015 in Germany,. Or just remember the plans for a wall on the Mexican border...
These are just the basics, everything else that is happening in the video is a result of this premisses.
    Greetings from Germany!

This song and video is absolutely a masterpiece. There is so much symbolism here. “Schwartzen Mann” can be both the bogeyman (which it is in the German language), but also the black man (the literal translation). It highlights how our media in Europe fed the “fear of the other” during the refugee crisis, which certainly had more than a tinge of racism and xenophobia. So poignant.
And the visual queues with everything in the video being black, white and red until Till smashes the TV, the source of the fear-mongering propaganda, and colours return are very poignant.

The black man is supposed to be "the bogeyman", but the literal interpretation of it, as the fear of black people, as this racist kind of fear is probably intentional, calling out the resentments that are fostered by existential kinds of fears, how that comes up, even though you might not think of yourself as a racist kind of person, that is probably still there and could surfaces given the right circumstancesm given the right fears. Btw, in the end scene, they are eating Schokoküsse. Schokoküsse (chocolate kisses) weren't always called that, they used to be, as recently as in the 2000s, called literally n-word kisses (in german that is and it wasn't n-word, but the actual n-word), that's probably another hint at that racism

You got the message. As a German I try to explain my opinion of this song, video and symbolism in it. I think it critisises the refugee wave from 2015. All was good. We lived our life, lawning the gras in our yard, chilling and grilling. We saw the suffer and pain just on tv and social media and no one cares 'cause it was far far away. Then the wave started and more and more refugees came. Many leading politics (like Trump) said "built a wall to protect yourself". And injected the poison into the people who believed them. The media like facebook, twitter, TV played a big role in this game to brainwash people. That's why the Rammstein members were sucked in their monitors and Till destroys the last existing TV with his lawnmower to say "Shut the F**k up we do not have to be afraid of black mans (boogieman). And now let us enjoy our "Negerkuss" (Negrokiss, Dickmanns) and don't be afraid of people who look not like us. Schwarzer Mann is more of a german version of the boogey man than a literal black man. The song is not directly about racism, but more about politicians and media manipulating and indoctrinating the people. Wer hat Angst vorm schwarzen Mann is also a popular game for children in germany. There was a controversy because of the name a few years ago and i think it got a new name. In the end, the band is eating "Dickmanns" which were originally called Negerkuss which translates to N*ggerkiss. So they are still playing with the racism part of the topic.

you are on point when it comes to the fact that "schwarzer mann" - aka bogeyman in english - isn't talking about black people in a literal sense, but as a metaphor for anything depending on what kind of agendas you grew up with. some people here in the comments claim the song is talking about black people and racism, but in context with the rest of the song that does not make any sense...
it also does not make sense in context of the video. when it was about race, racism and the literal "black man", instead of the bogeyman, why do white people in the video build walls and observe other white people with their cameras and start shooting at TVs with those white people they observe on them?
it's simple: because it isn't about skin color in the first place and those white people are each others bogeyman.. neighbors afraid of neighbors... so racism ofc is also one of those fears fed to us, but it is not the focus of the song

So, it is essentially an oooooold school scary nursery rhyme to get kids to behave (that then also got used by kids as a way to play tag). "Listen to your dad or the black man will get you" "Behave or the black man will grab you". Nowadays many politically-correct people will say "No, it's more like the bogeyman" but that's not true - the origin of the warnings/threats are old school great-grandmother era tales /threats/ scare tactics and are racist in a way that's shocking by today's standard but perfectly normal back then.
Rammstein takes this old fairy tale / kids game (which they do with many of their songs TBH) and give it a modern, relevant spin. It's used to reflect on fear of immigrants, fear of foreigners. All this fear is fed into us by politicians, media, lobbyists, and so it turns even the most trusting, neighborly people into paranoiacs that will buy anything that is pushed onto them to "protect" themselves from threats that don't actually exist.
Another point in the old-school casual racism explanation: At the end of the video, they are sitting watching TV, eating chocolate-covered marshmallow treats. Up until very recently, these treats were called "N3gr0kisses" (you know what I mean) and are a popular treat with German kids. It just highlights the hypocrisy of people's fears while at the same time highlighting how deeply ingrained racism can be in everyday items and language.

As the cheerleaders in the video can be seen to sell weapons and bricks, it could be criticism of the US as one of the main exporters of war and fear to other countries. Also other countries lapping up US culture, even though it's not our own.

The "Black Man" is like the Boogieman! In German it has nothing to do with Black People in general!!! The "Black Man" is the Unknown, the Bad, the Things that can happen, if you do something you shouldn't do... the Evil in the Shadows...
This video is about the media, about the fact, that we are all controlled by it! We take everything for granted, regardless what they say! Your neighbor is doing something society says its not ok? At one point you belive it...! For (a stupid example) they say, everyone who is drinking a special brand of beer are most likely to tormend and kill ... @@ITN_Global no problem,
I think a better 1:1 translation to english would be: the sinister man (eventhough - schwarz; also means black) But rammstein is also reffering to the evil black person, every racist has in his heads. - thats why the neighbors starting getting paranoid - because of tales even grown up PPl are beliving.
he comes in the night, in the dark... Thats why the schwarze mann. He exists in our Historie since the middle age.
The boogie man got his roots in the german "schwarze mann"
He and the Boogie man are clearly the same guy, we are talking about.
      - he was used by adults to frighten children into good behaviour. (back in the days - today, no one is doing such a thing - but his tale and songs still exisits through mouth to mouth propaganda by children for children, like the boogie man does - by children in America ;-)
      - hell, some unnamed crazy German parents in the middle age are traumatising children all over the world - even today )
(clearly Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers are also based on him - even their names got german roots: Krüger and Maier are really common German names ) )
but yeah, nowadays its really confusing and no one wants to misunderstand the "schwarze mann" with an actual black person and thats why coloured or People of Color is p.c. in germany.
