Great and often overlooked drummer. In my opinion one of the most musical drummers in progressive rock. His forte is playing these complex tunes that have so many interesting twists and turns and he is the glue that holds it together.

Kansas is a band that started with a Drummer that selected musicians he wanted to play with, Phil Ehart is the founder of Kansas and to this day he (along with Rich Williams) selects the musicians that come on board. The original members (even prior Kansas before they merged into 6) still talk to each other, and play together occasionally. One big family.

I love to see Phil Ehart get his due. I've seen Kansas about 8 times and I really appreciate his work in leading the band.

Phil Ehart does so much more than keep time. His playing contributes to the music. When Garth Brooks was young, he came back from a Kansas concert and told his friends: "Guys, I just saw a drummer playing a melody!"

Kansas is an exceptional band that is underappreciated. All the musicians are top caliber that show superb virtuosity and musicality. I just got to watch them live in El Paso on their "Point of no Return" tour. They are the cleanest live band I have ever seen. Ehart returned for this tour and it was a pleasure to see him live.

Take a listen to “People of the South Wind” by Kansas, good drumming on that track. And there’s a video on RUclips for it.

Btw, that’s Robby Steinhardt on the violin; Kerry Livgren plays guitar solo on this concert video

I have had the extreme good fortune to have seen KANSAS Live 4 times. Phil Ehart is my Favorite Drummer. He plays melodies not just rhythm patterns. Every member is a musical GENIUS. Steve Walsh is Keyboards and a great vocalist. Robby plays Violin like NOBODY else. Kerry on Guitar is phenomenal along with Rich and Dave….AWESOME performance every time.

What a super band.... the more I listen the more I’m blown away by the arrangements and songwriting.... so tasteful in the mini solos....
Perhaps Rush may have been influenced by Kansas to some degree as they did indeed cross paths back in the day. In fact, once Neil Peart was late to a tightly scheduled concert festival and Phil Ehart stood in for Neil until he arrived.
In any event, it’s clear Kansas was a major influence with all forms of prog rock with some pop elements thrown in - Toto, Dream Theatre are great examples of bands that followed the Kansas musical paradigm to one degree or another.

Phil is my second influence to want to play the drums right after Carl Palmer. He is so underrated.

Kansas has to be one of the most complicated bands to keep timing to! Phil was/is masterful! And he even imbelished during timing shifts! Complicated stuff.

The violin player is Robby Steinhardt, not Kerry Livgren. Livgren plays lead guitar and keyboards.

This song was great on the live album, Two for the Show which came out in the 70s. The song Portrait (He Knew) was 1977 off Point of No Return.

Weird coincidence I heard this song last night for the first time in years. A click track is a good tool, but a jam like this would not be psbl live with one. Thanks

Hey gary, i know you already reacted to bonhams moby dick solo from Royal Albert hall, but it would be awesome if you checked out his Moby dick solo from madison square garden in 1973 (from the song remains the same). His solo changed alot through the years!

I love your channel and I love hearing someone with real experience and knowledge break down techniques and videos. That said, would you be open to checking out some modern metal drummers? I know it's probably not your style but there are a few drummers I think you'd find interesting. Not just because of "wow, look how fast he is", but drummers that exhibit modern techniques, polyrhythmic exploration, and chops worth analyzing. If you'd be willing to humor me, I'd like to recommend some videos you may choose to review.
