I’m only 14 and I started working on small engine equipment. I love to work on this kind of equipment and I always take care of my equipment doesn’t matter if it’s high or low to me
I've watched many many many tutorials. This one ranks beyond excellent. Every beat of this video was perfect. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Genuinely.
To answer your question about caring for my equipment. I try to keep my trimmers and mower in good condition and either run them a little all year or drain out the gas. My Murray riding mower lasted 20 years. My Craftsman trimmer is about 15 years old and still runs good. But the older I get the harder it is for me to use and take care of things. But I keep trying. Thanks for the videos..
I could absolutely do a better job at taking care of my machines. That's one reason why I've tuned in to this channel, honestly. Small engine maintenance doesn't seem so daunting anymore.
you are correct, it does require some drive to do it, but spending money and having someone else fix it is typically enough for most people to try and take better care of it.
@@HomeGaragechannel Just got my Stihl back from the shop and it still doesn't want to start easy. Looks like all they did was slap a new carb on it. They didn't even give it a clean before charging me $150 for the "service". You can bet that I'll be doing my own maintenance and repairs from now on!
I take good care of my machines. One thing you can do, and it is what I do with my 2-strokes, is run the machine monthly throughout the winter, and you shouldn't have issues come springtime. I use 100% gas with Amsoil Stabilizer and Amsoil Saber. So I don't worry about the fuel going bad over the winter.
I've had trimmers given to me that were 2 stroke, they work for a while. I've even took three and attempted to make one frankentrimmer put that was short lived. I just wear myself out trying to start it. I had a cordless on but burned it up on tough grass, so I bought a nearly $400 4 stroke Husqvarna and love it.
I mentioned on another video about a Homelite string trimmer my kid brought home that had a burned out cylinder... The shaft was used with an Echo GT1100 engine I had got when I purchased a bulk sale of old trimmers.. The engine bolted right on, the handle and trigger fit. Score! Just need to get an air filter and filter cover... A better machine all around! Good work on the old Stihl!
Quick question: where do you dispose of used oil? I feel like disposing of oil is the #1 reason 4 stroke small engines don't get sufficient maintenance.
As I've stated before, I work hard for my equipment so therefore I take very good care of my equipment. I do store them every winter indoors and with fuel. I store them with canned fuel and never had issues with them starting. My tractor and mower are store outside but they are kept in a shed and also with can fuel.
@@HomeGaragechannel I really like the VP fuel. I was using True-fuel but the VP is a little higher octane and I've noticed a big difference in performance I can't find it in 40:1 so I get it in 50:1 and add a little oil to get it to 40:1. The main reason I use canned is non ethanol is hard to find in my area. If I was able to get It would use it instead. Canned is super expensive. Do you like the degreaser your using now or Super clean? I think the yellow degreaser is awesome

Good work. People always take the easiest route. Maybe recommend at the end of the season, empty the tank and run it till it dies. Why: Because it’s easy.
Great video, I take care of my machines, you can leave fuel in your 2 cycle equipment even during storage if you're using ethanol free premix fuel in a can from the store which is what I use.
I got a km131r stihl for free with 4 attachments, and it sat outside for 3 years getting snowed and rained on. All I did was adjust the valves and it fired right up.
I have some really cheap machines and I treat them the same as my stihl. I take good care of my equipment, cheap or expensive I want them to last. Alway empty the fuel tanks. As I have the tank upside-down, I press the purge bulb until all fuel leaves the carb. So avoiding running the engines lean.

sure thing, take off the plug, and put a thimble of fuel into the engine and try staring it. If that doesn't work it could be flooded. have you tried to lower the idle speed by turning the idle set screw? Also, did you remove or make any adjustments to the Fuel adjustments screws when cleaning the carb?
hey mate. I have got the fs 45c and I took the spark arrestor off to double check because was coming white smoke from the muffler and I realised there`s no screen at all on my spark arrestor, was pretty much just a bolt, is it right?
I currently have my Stihl FS45 running over the weekend (5 minutes or so) at full throttle every now and then, but now 2 days later it no longer works and it has already flooded twice, maybe this will work but i also adjusted it then because it stuttered at full throttle, it still ran normally afterwards, but could I have done something that is causing it to have difficulty starting up now?

The problem with 2-Stroke Engines is that the Gasoline evaporates with the time and the mixed in engine oil does not ignite alone so that you barely are able to start it after several weeks. 4-Stroke Engines do not have THIS Problem.
@@HomeGaragechannel I had this problem more than once with a 2-stroke scooter and a 2-stroke generator. Your tip with letting the carburator getting empty is very useful for such devices.
I've never had that problem. I don't like to mix large quantities (for a residential user) of 1 or more gallons at a time so I purchased a Stihl 1 liter gas can that has the mixture markings on it. Yes you have to mix more often but it keeps the amount of mixed fuel sitting around way down. I also try to only purchase enough Premium Non E fuel to last me for a season. I keep it unmixed, in a black gas can, inside the garage, in a cooler dark space. When you introduce heat or light to gas over time it tends to degrade it.
@@peskypeet This is not a problem in a proper Gas Can (usually 5l here in Germany) but of the carburetor which evaporates the gasoline slowly over the intake filter. My scooter is a "self-mixer" and has that problem, too. My Gasoline Trimmer has a 4-Stroke Engine with no such problems. But avoiding Ethanole "enriched" gasoline helps against micro bioticals which live in the water-part of the Ethanol. At Diesel this is known as "Dieselpest" which cloggs fuel filters and injectors.
the FS38 is an entry level trimmer that's built overseas. Nothing wrong with entry level but when you buy a Stihl you don't expect it to be built overseas. It also seems to be underpowered, and not as reliable as the other models.
If you’ve used a straight shaft and curb shaft feels like a toy. Worst thing about them is they rotate the opposite direction. I wander if left handed people prefer curb shaft🤷♂️
I sell used equipment and parts on eBay Stihl husky and ech are the only 3i fool with besides dolmar/makita on rare occasions. I’ve come to believe the homeowner grade stihl is superior Pro grade husky is closer in quality surpasses In performance -but they fail on sheer volume. Less pro dealer suppourt. Echo is solid Japan made units are top notch. Stihl is becoming questionable on some models like the bushing -for rod bearings in the blowers and 4mix engines. Junk….
Dumb question I know you mentioned to empty out the gas and run it for a minute to make sure it’s all out when storing for longer periods of time but wondering if not having any liquid around Parts would also cause it to dry up get brittle and break overtime? I don’t know what the solution for that would be. Also wonder since everything is made of crap these days due to supply chain or the price of everything going up and companies not wanting to use material that cost more or/and regulations on certain chemicals (just thinking of all the comments I read after the train derailment in Ohio and the chemicals it was transporting comments like why do we even need that stuff. People don’t get how the world works like let’s get rid of oil and then discovering EVERYTHING uses oil. I digress) or materials to also be higher in price but wondering if you’ve noticed even new machines and their components breaking down faster or not even new new ones but let’s say past ten years or so? I don’t know if that made any sense but just wondering. I mean just look at Boeing and the parts flying off, they say due to fake Metal I forget what kind of metal it was? carbon? I don’t know anyways. And also fact DEI hires.

What is wrong with the fs 38 trimmer you made a comment that it was not a very good trimmer I just bought one what is wrong with them
the FS38 is an entry level trimmer that's built overseas. Nothing wrong with entry level but when you buy a Stihl you don't expect it to be built overseas. It also seems to be underpowered, and not as reliable as the other models.
Well if you take care of it it should last you for several years right
@@HomeGaragechannel is there something wrong with it being built overseas I'm just trying to figure out if I wasted my money or not
@@NickJames-f2qshould have saved your money and bought a Troy built
Same thing
@@philliphall5198if it is the same thing why do I need a Troy-Bilt

what state are you in?

My machine look and run the same as they did the day I bought them.
nice work!
If you’ve used a straight shaft and curb shaft feels like a toy. Worst thing about them is they rotate the opposite direction. I wander if left handed people prefer curb shaft🤷♂️
I like this comment
Cool video
thank you
lol sounds like my parents “ tv on 24/7” well almost on that much.
probably
The one thing a curve shaft weed eater does not have a grease fitting for the gear head 😮
I'm pretty sure none of the new ones do, straight or curved, Stihl or Echo.
@@robertbaysinger1309 that is the truth about that matter because I have a curve shaft echo gt 225 weed eater
true
@@HomeGaragechannel the question of the day is how you do grease it this would be a great video on to do that
I sell used equipment and parts on eBay
Stihl husky and ech are the only 3i fool with besides dolmar/makita on rare occasions.
I’ve come to believe the homeowner grade stihl is superior
Pro grade husky is closer in quality surpasses In performance -but they fail on sheer volume. Less pro dealer suppourt.
Echo is solid Japan made units are top notch.
Stihl is becoming questionable on some models like the bushing -for rod bearings in the blowers and 4mix engines. Junk….
I really do appreciate your insight on the market.
This is why people are ditching gas string trimmers
I can agree with this statement
And also fact DEI hires.
it's a risk I don't mind taking, besides, it's only a couple of months, not years

The coils are weak spark and don’t last very long eather 😢😢😢

Not worth repairing these crummy cheap units.

sure, the ground wire to the ignition coil, or a butt connector might be disconnected. That would make the on/off switch useless and always have spark
