I love your positive response to opinions like “you're overdressed“ - “thank you, I really enjoy what I'm wearing“ is such a graceful way to deal with opinions. Thank you for that advice!
popovka , I have found that those who make comments about me being overdressed it’s often those are the individuals who feel that they themselves are feeling under dressed for the occasion! Maybe as I get older those comments don’t affect me any more! In fact pre-pandemic, when I attended a theatre production, I was surprised that so many people in the audience were wearing what I would call casual clothes. I guess I am in the mindset that if I’m going to attend live theatre those actors can see me sitting there and I would want to look and feel my best ,
I find I don't have to be that dressed up to receive comments like that. So many people don't bother at all. I always say someone has to set the standard.
Americans now dress like they are going to mow their lawns. I have seen people on the most, elegant cruise ships many times dressing like, this never going to the formal dining room so they can wear that attire, through the cruise. THeir loss the food innthe dining roos is league's above the cafeteria.
@@eileenchang2173 I have a friend who used to always comment when she and our husbands had lunch in restaurants. Not in an insulting way but her comments bothered me. THey werentmcompliments just observations hiding criticismms. I told her I dress to please myself and my husband. I amplified the comment with "he dresses me because he has a perfect eye." THey both laughed because my husband is a tall manly man but he has hidden artistic qualities that dont fit his public persona.I said "no, I really mean it. I pick out two or three outfits, model them for him, and he picks the outfit." He also helps tremendously with accesories: shoe bag jewelry belts scarf etc. and he has infallible taste for what looks best for me. He is always right and I always trust his opinion more than my own. He is always right and has never once in 40,,years been wrong. HE would. make the most marvelous stylist. I am a liberated professional woman and he is a traditional Southern gentleman. He loves classical music, fine antiques, architecture, but to look at him you would never realize, nor from his conversation because conversation about those things is not common among the more business oriented men we socialize with. THis hidden elegance , the complexity of his personality, is part of why I fell for him and why I have had such a beautiful life with him for 40 years. THey were shocked and finally that kept, her from commenting on my appearance. I know she still gets edgy about how I look . WHen others are wearing jeans at a,nice restaurant I am wearing an informal dress or skirt and blouse , more feminine than is the norm here . I agree everyone should wear what they feel best in.
Ive transitioned fully to wearing exactly what I want - flowy dresses and skirts and lots of pink. People always assume im “going somewhere” 😅 I just see life as far too short to blend in.
I can relate to this. My style is tailored and “preppy” clothing in neutral colors, which is perfect for the northeast US. However, I now live in a beach community in central Florida where it’s hot for 10 months out of the year, and the style is flowy, tie-dyed, “hippy dippy”, and LOTS of shorts! I’ve been bridging the gap by wearing more white and navy and choosing styles such as: palazzo trousers, cotton or linen midi and maxi dresses in lighter colors, and fitted Bermuda shorts.
I have close friends and family on FL and we’ve thought about moving there eventually but I don’t know if I can handle the fashion! LOL. I’m also from the northeast (MA) and love me some neutrals and boots and sweaters!
I am from Hawaii and I can totally relate! I love the English countryside style as well as more tailored scalloped collar tops. Girls my age like the minimalist (very short) shorts or athletic wear, I always feel so dressed up but that’s just my style🤷🏻♀️
Oh yes! I totally relate to that. I love winter clothes, all the dark, neutral outwear, I own lots of coats and jackets and I live in freaking Brazil. I travel a lot, so I get to use my clothing and it also gets cold where I live, I am thankful for that lol. I usually am too dressed up for my routine as a student, but I don't really care. I just get sad bc I cant wear my favorite clothes year round.
@@songbird377 If you appreciate "old fashioned" English apparel, you would love Ruby Granger. She's a British Studytuber, who has a modest, vintage, quintessentially English, personal style.
I can relate to you! Where I live it’s warm all year long (and we have very low humidity for half of the year, unlike FL) and it’s impossible for me to layer my clothes like I would like to. But I’m also learning to adapt my style by wearing softer fabrics and playing with accessories
I love Elle woods! Legally Blond is one of my very favorite movies. Talk about burning through a stereotype ! Her character taught me that carrying yourself with confidence, grace and exuding kindness to others is the best fashion statement.
I’ve been running into this problem a lot lately because I live in Southern California but my style is very New England: a lot of wool, plaid, sweaters, white button-ups, and dress shoes. I end up feeling really warm for 70% of the year due to LA’s endless summer, but I definitely rock it in late autumn and winter! I’ve found that keeping the same prints/weaves (e.g., herringbone, plaid, houndstooth, etc.) but in lightweight fabrics helps, especially since I like to keep a longer hem. Thankfully, no one has been mean to me about being over-dressed. In fact, I usually get compliments and smiles from people who seem to appreciate my style choices, which gives me a lot of confidence because I’m a little out of the norm when it comes to LA style. Thank you, Audrey, for this video. It’s confirmed for me that I’m on the right path and given me some ideas about how to survive the heat in spite of my woolly wardrobe!
I truly love Audrey, I have followed several youtubers for years and I easily get bored with whatever they have to say. I feel like your soft spoken voice, your great personality and your ability to incorporate all energy (human, regardless of their skin tone ) into your work makes me love you even more. You’re very well spoken, you’re smart, may you continue to prosper in all that you do
My style leans towards traditional, feminine & classic. Periodically I get comments that I am overdressed & hair is too styled. I enjoy caring about what I look like & I find it sad that it seems in society that laziness is rewarded. Kind of like because I am willing to put work into my appearance, I am somehow the weird one. That’s what I struggle with in terms of personal style. I enjoyed the video, very wise words!
It makes me sad that people want to drag you down to their level of low self-worth. Sometimes I can't believe that's how they want to show themselves to the world. It is truly sad that you get those comments sometimes. Sending you good wishes.
Diane Varga I try to just accept that of course everyone has a right to their opinion but inside it can still hurt. Thank you so much for your support and well wishes, very same to you!
I live in an area where people are very casual: women will sometimes go to the grocery store in pajama pants and slippers. I don't have a feeling about that one way or the other. What I like wearing is maxi dresses, mainly for comfort. I run really hot, and they are they only thing I can tolerate in the summer. I can layer over and under them in the winter as needed. I used to get an occasional comment from other moms at the school about being "dressed up". I would never comment about someone else being over- or under-dressed so that was annoying. I just told them I like to wear what makes me comfortable. I agree with Audrey's take on this, and I like her response to unsolicited comments. Maybe women could be doing a lot more "ruling the world" if we spent less time finding things to criticize about each other's outfits, hair, makeup, faces, bodies, parenting skills, etc.... 😩
Yes, I am in California and it is very warm and casual here. I am of a Irish and Scottish descent and I prefer a more classic dressier look. I get comments that I look dressed up or look like I’m dressed out of a magazine. I appreciate these compliments but it does make me feel overdressed at times. I dream of living somewhere more European.that fits my style.
I love how you mentioned that it's good to embrace the changes that your experiences in another place can make in your personal style. I can personally relate to it, it was actually seeing the differences between styles of different cultures that made me consider putting more thought into what kind of "general vibe" I want to give off with my clothes. It also exposed me to different silhouettes that I hadn't considered before. Some years ago I did a university exchange in Italy and I come there with the only type of pants I'd wear being jeans - either skinny or straight cut, it was simply the standard back home for girls my age to go out dressed like this. Material and looser pants seemed too serious to me and something that's meant for more mature women. And there I saw girls that were students as well who would sport material flare pants (or with wider legs) and I decided to give it a go. In the end, it turned out a stable sympathy to me, because now I prefer the material ones to jeans.
I've literally been thinking about this for ages! I love boho/summery outfits and I feel so limited since I live in London and the weather is so crappy most of the time. So happy someone finally made a video about this 🙏🏾✨
As someone who lives in the Pacific Northwest, (where the weather is also crappy 😹), I've started collecting little lightweight layering turlenecks so I can put them under things and not always have my neck freezing. I get a lot more use out of some of my lightweight/flowy/open-neck items this way...
I live in a place that is very casual, but I would say that my style is a bit more formal. I have always been really self-conscious, but I love that you say that we should just wear what we love. I think life is to short to let other people make us feel bad for dressing however we want!
I live in New England which is fortunate for me since I love wearing cozy wools, cashmeres and scarves during our winter, which sometimes seem unendingI I love white and pastels (especially blush pink) but do wear a lot of those colors in my sweaters, coats, hats and gloves during the winter. Our summers are warm but short and I love linen, but I don't invest much money in my that wardrobe. Thanks for a great video, Audrey!
Oh my goodness, this segment really speaks to me and my personal style. Thank you Audrey. I find that I often feel “over dressed” compared to how others dress in my Canadian urban neighborhood but, I am true to my personal style despite this.
My mother always had a unique style. She wore leather pants when no mom was wearing them. As a young person, I got embarrassed. Wow, has my feelings changed! My mom was a trend setter. She wore designer and thrift store together and made it work. She never left the house without looking great. I would love to follow her example. I think the seasons in the NC mountains stays a bit colder for longer so warmer clothing and long sleeves and jackets are much more prevalent. People wear fur boots in cold weather. We are part of a snow ski community so that kind of style is worn a lot. Of course there are those who want to wear the mountain hick styles overalls and granny or hippie clothing. Each age finds it's style. I think you can dress any way you want and even black and white in summer or warm community is ok.
I feel this video in my soul😂 I’m from Hawaii and I love an elegant polished look like Kate Midddleton, peasant blouses, scalloped collared tops, and Oxford style shoes. I always feel so extra when everyone else is wearing shorts and T-shirt’s or beachy style clothes because I’m not a beach girl.
I moved from France to Canada years ago and I decided to follow the very laid back, super casual way of dressing that was not my style (my style is more preppy casual and casual chic) but I thought I had to adopt the jeans and sweatshirts that everyone was wearing to fit in! I recently moved from a big city to a more rural environment but I decided to follow my taste... I am older and do not care as much to fit in or not! but to my surprise I get nice comments from women young and older, even from men that they like my outfits!!! I think dressing as you want and tweaking it a bit if necessary is key to be confident and it shows!!! I wish someone had given me that advice sooner but RUclips did not exist then!!! thanks for sharing!!!
Lovely! I am Canadian and much prefer to dress in a more European style. Well--fitting classics and a bit of polish. I grew up in Montreal where people still make more of an effort, but standards have slid drastically in recent years, that's for sure. Keep on being you, my friend!
Great topic! Actually it is one I have been hoping you'd tackle. I am currently going through this in a sense. I live in suburbia in Canada, land of the hockey/soccer mom. I have worked from home for several years and have little opportunity to hang out in the city. I still dress for work and for running errands I try to dress nice, I don't want to always look like I am on the way to a soccer game, you know? The other day I went to the grocery store with a sleeveless button up collared T from Walmart and a skort from Costco. However I dressed it up with my red flats and red purse, hoop earrings, bracelet and lipstick. I was surprised by how many comments and looks I received. I took the compliments for what they were meant to be but at the same time, the sideways glances from others weren't really appreciated. There is nothing wrong to trying to elevate a basic inexpensive outfit and when others don't do it when they run errands it makes it hard to blend. I've been trying to think of ways to elevate yet blend and have come to realise it isn't possible so I am just going to wear what I think is apprpriate for the outing and makes me feel good.
I also live in area where I hardly see anyone embrace style. It’s not just casual, they wear ill fitting, drab clothes and they don’t seem to prioritize feeling good at all. I end up standing out anyway because I need a cane so I just go for it and wear what I love. I find my confidence shines through so much that most of the comments I receive are complimentary. I bet you look fantastic when you go out.
@@Bonnieerina I don't know about fantastic, but I am trying to look presentable. I think a lot peoples' lives are sooo busy running around here and there that style really is at the bottom of their priorities. For most, it's just 'are these clothes clean?" and "I have no time to style my hair, ponytail it is!" It's all about keeping the household running and moms put themselves last as always. However, my son is a teenager now and at his age now I think how I present myself impacts him, I don't want to embarrass him in front of his peers so I try too look tidy. Stoopid reason to dress tidy probably but whatever spurs you on right? 😅
Insecure people get so judgy. Look at girls in high school, many wearing the same thing with only slight variations to show their "individuality." Skip ten years or so to soccer moms still trying to fit in and make everyone do the same things they do, wear the same things they wear. And how they ask about where your children are at in everything from height percentages to schoolwork as if life is a big competition. I love that you are feeling you want to wear what *you* think is appropriate and what makes you feel good. Sending you all the good vibes.
It’s very easy to criticize someone behind a screen and with a username but not in person. Don’t listen to the comments! You’re one of my biggest fashion icons Audrey! You’re not “overdressed” you’re “thankyouimbetterdressedandmoreelegantthanyoudressed”, Keep it up with your amazing work!
My style is fall: cardigans, boots, long sleeves, black on black My environment is summer: spaghetti straps, kimonos, wedges, shorts, and light colors This is very helpful but I have a lot of homework to do 😂
For me it's the other way round: I love summer clothes, but can only wear them for about 4 months of the year. The rest of the year it's sweater weather and I don't like to layer up so much (still do it of course).
In my country Costa Rica, most of the people are terribly bad dressed, with some lucky exceptions. I have always felt totally out of place, except when I go to Europe, some US cities and even México City, where due to the cool weather, people tend to go way better dressed than here. Anyways I just don’t care and I am always dressed the way I like. Despite comments like “do you think you are French?”, “why are you so dressed?”. I will never wear anything different because that’s not my style and I like to be faithful to my own style and image. I loved this video Audrey!
This is so accurate, I love bright colors and skater dresses (since I'm from South Florida). I noticed in Atlanta people do not wear a lot of bright colors, usually just neutrals or pastels. When I lived in LA everyone wore black and white, and I did not which drew a lot of attention to me. I'm a small RUclipsr!
I moved from a state that celebrates all four seasons to southwest Florida so I totally relate. I prefer a more polished look than the “ Beachy” look so it’s been quite challenging for me to adjust. Thank you so much for this topic! You always know what subjects your audience can benefit from.
It pains me how people feel it necessary to make negative comments on RUclips channels. Nobody is forcing one to watch any given channel! You are adorable and I love your personal style! You do you beautifully!
Very great topic. I grew up in the Prairies of Canada and everyone is so casual - too casual. Dressing up meant changing from blue jeans to cords. When I moved to a large city in eastern Canada and began working I really needed to learn to dress better. And, yes we still wear a lot black - all the time. I still live in a large city and everyone dresses so casually. This is good for me because I don't need to try too hard, ha ha! When people ask or say anything about me being "dressed up" I just answer " really?? I am casual". You explained everything so perfectly in this video. Great job!!
love the video! but I honestly believe you can never be too fancy, even in small towns. I love being classy and "dressing to impress" so to say, because I absolutely love looking polished and more sophisticated with my style. i have worn workout leggings and hoodies for way too long, it's not cute anymore!
audrey, i have become addicted to watching you, for at least a few minutes, almost every day. it isn't about the fashion; it's your long-term approach, your attention to detail, the pleasure you take in it, and your general positivity. love it.
I live near Death Valley, so I've done research on Native American clothing in this region, Australian clothing, Indian clothing, and Arabic clothing. I want to feel cool in the summer! And I need to be able to sprint after children on windy days!
The last bit is me...I’ve started using your tips about colour and style and was told I’m looking “too smart” and your suggestion to say “thank you” is excellent! I’ll use that! 🥰
I moved from New York to Buenos Aires and the first adjustment was adding color to my mostly black wardrobe. The second was going from formal/structured to playful, the style in Buenos Aires is heavily influenced by European fashion (especially Italian). All in all, my style transformation has been a really fun one.
I also get the candid comments on my style on social media but I continue to wear what I love and let it be and glad to see others doing the same. Love your style! ♥️
Audrey, what a wonderful topic. I have had a Retail Management career and have lived all over the USA. The first few weeks in a new location I would look and figure out how to incorporate my current wardrobe into my new location. I am so happy living at the beach on the East Coast now, I have always been a navy girl, and yes I do have an entire collection of French Sailor shirts ! Keep up your great work. Stay safe and well 😎
Cedar Pardee-Lewis , sure check out L. L. Bean, they have great French Sailor Shirts, you can go in line or visit one of their brick and mortar locations.
Wow, I’ve been thinking about this my whole adult life and only now RUclips recommended your channel! I spend a lot of time in Paris where neutral colours reign, and women don’t really accentuate their curves. My style is more colourful, feminine rather than “chic” and I like to highlight my curves so I always feel like a silly tourist.. But I also get stares when I go to California since I can’t really do casual. When visiting SF I thought I was going to freeze to death because I only wear dresses but the weather there was too chilly, and I would get weird looks if I wore tights (unlike in Europe 😑). I also like form-fitting clothes and would always get asked by Uber drivers in SF if I’m going in for work😂. In Korea where I’m originally from, standing out is usually frowned upon and accentuating my curves would get me lewd unwanted states from men!😣 I feel like I can’t win, no matter where I go. As I’ve gotten older I got better at not caring what others think but people would still comment on my outfits. Saying thank you and that I really enjoy what I’m wearing sounds like a great way to deal with it! Thank you Audrey! (By the way I adore your dress in this video!❤️)
I really appreciate you mentioning how you don't want to have people imitate you or a specific style in general but to embrace their own unique style! I am all for that haha
Audrey, thanks again for such a lovely video. I look forward to your content each week. What I found is a good pair of dark jeans and a crisp, white , button-down shirt has always been a staple in my wardrobe and was (is) a great jumping off point to express style no matter where I was located. As a young lifeguard in Santa Cruz , CA I used my father's white, long sleeved shirt tied at the waist over my bikini top, with a pair of Levi bell-bottoms and rubber flip flops. In Boston, MA where I worked as a professional, my Brooks Brother's tailored white shirt and Levi, boot-cut jeans were accessorized with a scarf and blazer and a pair of Joan and David loafers. At present in Arizona and semi-retired, my Brooks' Brother shirt now shares stage with a pair of Everlane ankle length jeans and the flop flops have leveled up from drugstore rubber to Matt and Nat. Nice thing is I still have most of these items...except the rubber sole flip flops, they were lost in 1977 at the Led Zeppelin concert in Oakland!
I’m so happy you posted this video! My personal style is more French classic everyday wear while I was working but I have been changing to more summer dresses and sundresses and would like to make some of these Korean style “little house on the prairie” type dresses that some RUclipsrs wear in linen. I feel it won’t match with Florida but like you say it doesn’t matter. I wear shorts and a t-shirt when at home now during the lockdown. I find it kind of hard to have a capsule wardrobe because it keeps changing and I guess I still haven’t found my style. I’ve been searching for about 50 years now lol. I honestly don’t know why I have never been able to nail down a style of my own after all these years! Oh well!
Audrey you never fail to inform and inspire! I'm from the Pacific Northwest (Vancouver B.C) and moved to coastal Georgia several years ago and this is something I really struggle with. When it rains or is slightly chilly I grab my boots n puffer almost with out fail lol. I get a bit tired of wearing shorts n flip flops le sighhh. But watching you helps sooo much girlfriend, your the best!!
Interesting. I moved from Montreal to Vancouver many years ago and could not stand the lack of polish or sophistication there. So beach focussed. Had to leave, sorry.
Loved this! At first I wasn’t sure it applied to me because I was only considering the weather, but when I started to think outside of that, I realized that this has been a huge struggle of mine over the past few years! My new town and new family (since getting married) are more casual than what I was used to growing up. It’s taken rediscovering my personal style to be okay being different in that way. And it’s pretty much all thanks to you!!
Hi Audrey! I almost never comment on videos but in watching yours I remembered how much negativity gets thrown at others on the internet and wanted to let you know how much I LOVE your videos. Your voice is so calming and warm and I also love your approach to fashion and style. I also went to school in Charleston (now live in Colorado) and love seeing the scenery- brings back such great memories.
I live in Colombia in a little town and nobody dresses up for almost anything (not even people that have an office job). I don´t dress up even for work because I´m a biologist and I work in the forest so I have to wear appropriate clothing for walking a lot and getting dirty and sweaty, which is a shame because I love elegant clothing and my elegant pieces are in my closet without being wear. I hope that when the COVID ends I can wear my beautiful elegant pieces at least for going out for dinner or something because is wired to use them inside the house when I´m always cooking and doing all the house job, that always ruins whatever I´m wearing. Thanks for all the advice.
It is so interesting that the vibe where I live is very casual, sometimes too casual, and my personal style evolved the opposite way, from casual to smart casual. But that is how I feel good, and don't care what "the expectations are". Of course paying attention to the occasion. Thank you for the video!
Thank you so much for this video. The topic is so relevant to me. My husband and I have moved from Québec in Canada (read cold weather, lot's of layering, wool, etc) to the south west part of Costa Rica (read warm all year, very casual, beach very light fabrics) 5 years ago. Since then, I have struggled to adapt my style and find a way not just be in flip flops all day but still fit in with my new surroundings and keep my personal style. Your video has showed me a powerful way of working on this.
Find a good billowy blouse or top and have a tailor take in the waist. I had a curvy client who was a 40 G while not breastfeeding and I tailored many tops and dresses than didn't fit in the waist for her. It really made a difference in her life and what she was able to wear. Find your wide points, fit them and have the rest taken in!
@@rodittis You're right, but it's not about others as much as it is about me & how I'd like to see my style flatter my shape in the mirror.. :) For example, my style is usually sporty/casual.. & I love to wear over-sized hoodies, it's my favorite but because I have a short rounded "romantic" body type ; it doesn't really flatter my body so much.. So I'd like to hear Audrey's tips & ideas about how adjust your favorite style/items to match different body types ❤️
Living in the mountains of Vermont, I feel like I have to stick to practical clothing. Half the year, I'm in a parka and snow boots. I suppose I could be cheeky and rock a boho flowy dress underneath though...with long underwear. 🙃
Check out a You Tuber Busbee style she moved to Colorado from Texas and although her You Tubes is for 40 /50 she has a few about how to dress stylishly in the cold
Yup, this is exactly what happened to me. I moved from Ukraine where girls would wear make up and hills going grocery shopping, to Edmonton, Canada, where most of the time people look like they are going fishing or for a hike somewhere in mountains. I don’t blame them, Alberta’s harsh climate dictates it’s own style. I did get a lot of compliments on my chic business casual outfits when working in the office tho. After a couple of years, however, my style slowly deteriorated as I opted for more casual clothing and stopped following trends. It took some time to get back on track as I’m in Toronto now and this big east-coast city is more in tune with my personal style.
Fashion is a creative/artistic outlet and I love confronting people with seeing something different than they're used to. What a great way to add some art to someone's day.
I read your blog from a couple of days ago - get the necklace! It is so versatile, and even though it feels fancy, I feel like I can wear it often because it's not flashy, but it is iconic.
Such a helpful video Audrey! After living in NYC for 12 years, followed by living in London for the last 5 years, I just moved to North Carolina and found this video very helpful. The weather, for once, is a huge change from London (loving the sunny blue skies here!) but it’s also a lot hotter than London and I have made tweaks to my wardrobe. As for arts and culture, I am still exploring and would love a few recommendations from this amazing community of great ladies ☺️
I love wearing Doen and Christy Dawn dresses. The comments used to bother me about being too dressed up but now I find the joy they bring me in wearing them far outweighs any comments I receive.
Your dress is just magical, Audrey! 👸Where did you got it from? I live in a cold country (autumn weather for 10 months and 2 months of warmth) it doesn't match my style at all. People here are wearing black all year long, this is not my color, I did like you, started to wear blue and bordo colors. However my style didn't change, people here are following fashion too much and a sporty/ casual style is popular here. My style is more elegance, classic and feminine, I wear a lot of skirts, dresses, high heels and no one does here, so it's easy to be noticed.
That dress on you is pure magic ✨ Thank you for addressing a topic I’m always pained with. Adapting style factors to fit in a bit more is a brilliant idea. I’ve been bemoaning my west coast situation where leggings and flip flops are the only thing anyone ever wears so even black jeans feel too fancy! Whewwwww xx
I think I just recently asked you this very question! Thank you for your well-considered response. Besides living in a more urbane area than I used to, you've made me more aware of some of the style stereotypes that have further limited my choices. You've given me some great ideas for making changes and I'm excited to try new things!
Loved this video and many others you’ve created Audrey! I like dressing up a bit in my everyday life. Since I was a child I was teased for it, but at this point in my life (In my 30s), I don’t care anymore. I only get one life and would rather live it wearing what I love and celebrating my particular aesthetic. Clothes and fashion are another form of self expression and frequently a creative outlet. We should just let each other be. So, I agree with you to simply say thank you, not take it personal, and remember to be gracious with the personal style choices of others.
Regarding color, I also moved from the northeast (lots of black) to FL (color!) and I think it’s because the light is different. Black looks very stark in the Florida light where as in the northeast it seems to blend into the environment. Took me a while to figure out the effect of a region’s light on how color is perceived.
Thank you for addressing this! I live in a place where the content of this video probably wouldn't speak to the majority and everyone is super casual and uniform, with not much attention paid to personal style, let alone fashion. After spending much time fending off those "overdressed" comments and stares (yes - the ultimate intangible obstacle!!), I was about to resign from my passion for dressing well and relegate myself to living vicariously through videos such as yours where you explore & experiment with everything. However after this video I've decided to get out of that slump and resume curating what I enjoy - a process which in itself brings much joy! With love from a huge fan
@@Cfoots03 this video has actually inspired me to dress as nice as I want to at work. No one has said anything to me, but I really don't mind anymore if they do :)
Thank-you for this beautiful video! Being a teenager especially, I feel it’s all too attractive a decision to sacrifice one’s personal style to fit in with those around you - and boy has it been my problem for much longer than I’d like to admit! I found it tricky to navigate situations where people decide to comment negatively on what you’re wearing, especially when most of these came from my family, but your advice to say “thank-you I really enjoy what I’m wearing today” was such a wonderful way to respond I hadn’t thought of before. Thank-you once again for this video; everything you mentioned was very useful and I think many people like myself would gain a lot. I’m feeling really excited to explore style more and wear the things that actually make me feel good! Xx
Great advice. I’ve been a fan since your earliest videos. You’ve really helped me discover my style- a cross between the classics with a Rag & Bone edge thrown in. I’m always yearning for cool days here in Fort Lauderdale to wear blazers, sweaters & boots. Cold office A/C does allow for it sometimes. Thanks Audrey! 🙂
I live in southern California, and I love, and look good in more tailored clothing. Its been challenging, but have found the middle ground, between the casual style most people wear, and the classic, sometimes preppy looks I love. People do comment sometimes about me being "dressed up", but I just say this is how I love to dress, and let it go. Love your channel, Audrey
Omg, I can relate so much with this. I live in India and it's very hot but I love the whole sweater and long jacket style soooo much... Love this video
Thank you for this video! I’m so appalled sometimes when I see so many sloppy dressed people, most just don’t care anymore, what happened to caring about what you look like and having a personal style. Yes, it does take some effort but when you feel good about yourself you’re a happier person.
This video was refreshing and healing for me. Somewhere along the way, I've lost my connection to myself and my style. This video is helping me reconnect.
I really appreciated this video… I have lived in and around the same 4 season areas over the years but what has changed would be where I’ve worked - casual workplaces to formal business dress. It’s hard to infuse your personal style in instances where everyone else is in a formal/ cookie cutter/ style uniform but want to be taken seriously in the workplace. These simple tweaks will make all the difference. Thank you!
If I even get a little bit dressed I'm just being "stuck up" or "fancy" or trying to get attention, I get faces and eye rolls. But I can go out in a huge tshirt and jean shorts and no one cares. 😕
Yeah, the whole t-shirt-and-hoodies thing is starting to get a bit old. Not everyone wants to look like a 20 something LA RUclipsr, who works from home, and has a penchant for only wearing their own merch...
Love this video. Made such a change as I lived on the East Coast for 30 years and now in LA for over a decade, my wardrobe changed significantly due to not only climate, and the laid back style of LA. Thank you for mentioning fabric changes. That was a big change for me coming from a colder climate to a hotter climate. Your voice is also so soothing! Great video Audrey!!
I live in a tropical island, but I've always loved to layer up, wear sneakers and boots etc. So now I'm used to pair boots with shorts and tank tops which exactly what you're talking about. Thank you so much for this video! ❤
I live in rural FL where most people are dressed down and wear tanks, shorts, and flip flops. I like to dress "up", classy, minimalist, and I love blazers and cardigans. Sometimes I get looks and comments but it doesn't bother me anymore. I wear what I like and what makes me feel good. Audrey, I love your videos!!!
I think you dress beautifully. Your wardrobe seems to be very well thought out, stylish, classic, timeless, sometimes utterly feminine and very Southern, like in today's video, and other times even a touch masculine. You could go anywhere and fit in. You are my style guru.
This was such a wonderfully helpful video, thank you Audrey! I live in North Idaho where people are very casual and more sport/outdoor recreation oriented and therefore, dressed. I incorporate a little bit of that with a elegant and chic style. In the beginning of changing my style, I really felt like a sore thumb even just going out to grocery shop and sometimes even at church! People would ask me if I was going to a wedding, out on a formal date or worked in a fancy office. I would just say, “this is my style! This is what I like to wear.” It’s amazing how bold people are willing to be if you look overdressed to them, but hardly ever do I hear comments about being too casual where I live. I felt very comfortable in my new and evolving style at first, but then uncomfortable when I went out but I have growing confidence and have had to just accept I’m going to look different from a majority of people where I live, even finding little compromises. Fortunately… My area is also rapidly expanding with many out-of-state move-in‘s from over east and really all over the country so the style in the way people look and dress is also changing! You have really helped me gain this confidence and validated that it’s OK to just look different and embrace personal style even if it doesn’t fit in with everyone else!
I needed this so badly, thank you!! 🤗 I love wearing cute (summer) dresses, but living in the mountains it isn't always easy to look chic - sometimes you just have to wear more practical clothes 🙊especially in winter
Thank you so much for making this video. I didn't even realize how much I needed it until I watched it. I moved to a very small town from a large city about 3 years ago and the style difference is like chalk and cheese. Being able to express myself through my clothes is a big deal for me so I've been on a personal style journey for the last few months just trying to re-discover myself within my new environment and your tips have been so helpful and your words so comforting. Thank you again.
I have this problem, but with the added angle that my personal style doesn't fit my lifestyle where I live. This is very much a cargo pants and hiking boots kind of life most of the time, plus we get down to -40°F in the winter. I love travel, and that gives me the opportunity to wear some of the things I enjoy. This means, however, that I end up having two wardrobes. It's a lot of space being taken up by clothes that I only wear a few times a year, though. 🤷. I haven't found a good alternative to this yet.
I do too!I have 3 styles I like: the bohemian, Parisian style, more structured and solid colors with sharp lines, and vintage. I've found that the Parisian style works for me in spring and summer, the solids in Fall and Winter, and vintage whenever I'd like as more of a hobby of for special events. :) I used to feel pressured to stick to one style because I think people get thrown off by versatile taste, but I found a way to get my styles to work for me so that people don't notice my clothes first, but they see the clothes and me as going hand-in hand and the clothes are to enhance my style and personality.
Natalie Grace OMG!! Same here!! Living in the crazy extreme weather patterns of Texas, I find myself having those exact 4 styles to suit my many moods and temperatures. Plus I visit NYC and Tokyo often to see my friends and family, so I have to adjust accordingly. It's sometimes sad to see most of my good quality, timeless wintry outfits are hardly worn here, yet taking up lots of valuable closet space. Yet finding it difficult to get rid of them for fear of the "what if I..." syndrome lol. And the fact that clothing is eye candy, especially during these weird quarantine times.
That was excellent, Audrey 🌸🌸 I live in a small town, working in an office with casual dress code, have a house, garden and a family, I am always on my bike or walking, hardly taking the car... So I need casual, sportive, practical clothes. But I looooove special pieces, statement garment so much! That's why I have a quite huge capsule wardrobe - with enough basics for my daily basis, but with enough fun, statement, special pieces that makes me happy, even if I haven't that much occasions to wear them as often as I would like, but the couple of times in the year (on vacation, special events...) I wear them (for years and years!) I feel so happy! That's why I am not a girl of a minimalistic 40 pieces capsule wardrobe 😉 🤗
Great topic! I live in the Sonoran desert in Arizona, but love boots, blazers, scarves, sweaters etc. I feel like I'm always negotiating my style preferences with practicality. On another note, I love your hair in this video!!
Saaame! I live in Hawaii and never get to wear my blazers and boots😩 funnily enough when I go to Arizona for conferences in the Spring/Winter I bring all my cozy winter clothes😆
Me too! I moved to southern California a few years back and it's so HOT. I love my sweaters and other cozy items but would have a stroke trying to wear them. I'm definitely a winter/fall person. These long soCal summers just make me depressed.
@@songbird377 yes, winter evenings can be chilly, but the sun is so intense that the middle of the day can get toasty. I suppose it is always mild in Hawaii.
I went through this process myself from living in NYC for 15 years & moving to the countryside in NJ. I did eliminate a lot of my black clothing & switched to navy & a rich dark brown & instead of high heels to boots & ballet flats (going flat was a difficult transition, but heels don’t work in gravel) also more sweaters fewer blazers & suit jackets, also insulated vests & down jackets. The worse part was giving up glamorous dresses, I only needed 1 or 2. It was tough, but I’ve embraced my new lifestyle & dress style. Thanks for the video.🙏🏽❤️
Great topic. I moved to NC from the northeast 17 years ago and still love black, neutral, simple style but I live in the land of girly girls who love color and patterns. So I’ve adjusted my style with a few accessories and pops of color that help but I’ve had to basically own my personal style, even if I stand out in the crowd. :)
Yes! I have felt this many times. I first became aware of how differently people dress in different cities about ten years ago. I was traveling extensively throughout the US and Canada for work. Wearing combat boots to a nightclub in Toronto was edgy cool; in Miami, they wouldn’t let you in unless you had on Manolo Blahniks. A cream sweater and jeans might seem like a very innocuous outfit anywhere, but in Seattle where everyone was wearing all black, it felt like neon. In my own neighborhood, people have commented that I am dressed up, when I was wearing a t-shirt, jeans, and blazer, (and coordinated accessories.) Love your comeback; I’ll use that next time.
Story of my life! I live in Valencia (Spain) which has a mild weather so most people don’t wear hats at all but since I get really cold because my thyroid doesn’t work properly I really love hats and gloves.
Thank you for this video! I was so excited when I saw it because I didn't realize other people felt this way! Your videos are always so well thought-out Audrey, and it really shows.
I adore your hair! Such a lovely, flowing style that suits you perfectly. And I also second the notion of allowing people to dress as they choose. I came out of the womb as a total non-conformist, so for me, I dress the way I like to, without regard for external feedback. And it helps to say “thank you!” after someone makes a rude comment-it really throws them off! Lol
Great advice! I live in a very casual city and have always loved dressing in a way that is much more formal. Being 'put together' makes me stand out and feel confident. I find that I actually tend to receive complements for my clothing choices or personal style. I do dress casually; usually when I just want to blend into the background.
I love this video. :) I have a gorgeous linen jumpsuit, but live in Germany, so in the Fall especially I layer a turtleneck underneath and then add a cozy long cardigan on top and it's such a comfy outfit even in cooler weather.
I love this idea! Clothing should indeed match the place we are living at. I can’t imagine how Audrey manage to be be very calm , sensible , humorous , organized , stylish and CHIC all at once in every video she releases! I’m definitely a fan! I learn a lot from your videos and I’m definitely applying it on my very own channel too ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
I used to have a co-worker who would make very loud, obnoxious comments about my clothes---"Here she comes, Miss Rent the Runway" or "This one, she loves to dress like she's the boss" or "somebody tell her to not come dressed for the opera." It was all jealousy. I was never over the top, but while she would show up in stretched out t-shirts to work in an office and greet clients, I would wear a 2 inch heel every day, match my handbag to my shoes, wear skirts and dresses at least a couple days a week, wear understated makeup, polished nails, small earrings...One day she caught me in a bad mood and when she made her "comment of the day" as I entered a meeting, I said, "Of course I look overdressed. When my one and only office mate chooses to dress slovenly every day, it's impossible not to stand out for looking amazing." She never uttered another word about it. I strive to conduct myself with elegance, but there's a point when one must stop ignoring and tolerating the malicious comments of people who are trying to deride and demean us.
I guess I am in the mindset that if I’m going to attend live theatre those actors can see me sitting there and I would want to look and feel my best ,
@@eileenchang2173 Hear, hear!
If you want to dress up for the occasion, why shouldn't you?

AMEN. Thank you once again Audrey!!!
What a gracious reply! I will have to remember to use that line!
ha ha and yes ........ delicious
I can't imagine anyone criticizing anything Audrey wears.
Probably envious and insecure individuals, intimidated by Audrey's impeccable sense of style LOL
Imagine having the nerve. I bet they are the type that appear on those Walmart freaks videos.
@@sailork8848 hihihi :D exactly!!
Hold my beer... (Hahaha I wouldn’t dare)
This dress on you!!! Jane Austen heroine vibes.
Totally agree!😍
With the curly hair!
So works in the south. Very feminine. Lovely.
I felt like Elle Woods when I wore a purple blazer/skirt set to an interview in NYC!
I love Elle woods! Legally Blond is one of my very favorite movies. Talk about burning through a stereotype ! Her character taught me that carrying yourself with confidence, grace and exuding kindness to others is the best fashion statement.
Good for you!
Shirley Coonerty She spoke about it in a previous video about her jewelry.
Did you get the job? 🤞
@@tdhawk167 Unfortunately, that's when I learned that appropriate interview attire in New York is either black or grayscale!
I'm usually over dressed in comparison to my friends, but I don't care :) I keep dressing the way I like and feel good with~

Your voice is like a solice to the soul. Shows how the tone can uplift a person 😍
Agreed. Just lovely.
That would be the operatic training in her voice, she sounds like she sings to you sometimes x
She is/was an Opera singer
I'm always overdressed and I'm not a fan of casual clothing.
Same, I don’t care what other people think!! In fact, I feel fabulous being the overdressed person 😆
Same!
Yeah, I've tried so many times to just be casual but that's not me!
I don’t own casual clothes
Yes, I am in California and it is very warm and casual here. I am of a Irish and Scottish descent and I prefer a more classic dressier look. I get comments that I look dressed up or look like I’m dressed out of a magazine. I appreciate these compliments but it does make me feel overdressed at times. I dream of living somewhere more European.that fits my style.
I can relate. A simple, classic style never dates.
Feel you. I live in Sweden but in a small town where sports wears is the norm... feel more home dresswise while in Stockholm
So happy someone finally made a video about this 🙏🏾✨
Bohemian types live in colder climes, too! Have you seen the southwestern US version of boho?
Elena Christian no I haven’t seen it. I’ll look it up tho. Most of my clothing inspo comes from Pinterest and at of my favourites are summer pieces☹️
😍 Yes to boho/summery outfits!
As someone who lives in the Pacific Northwest, (where the weather is also crappy 😹), I've started collecting little lightweight layering turlenecks so I can put them under things and not always have my neck freezing. I get a lot more use out of some of my lightweight/flowy/open-neck items this way...
im not sure bt theres a youtuber called freddymylove, she's from london and has kind of bohemian style
Sounds like a dream. Living in New England is on my bucket list. 😁
I adore Kate's style as well!!
You are such an inspiration Audrey, thank you. I'm 65 and enjoying my clothes again x
When you look good and comfortable with it, people also start to accept it.
You’re not “overdressed” you’re “thankyouimbetterdressedandmoreelegantthanyoudressed”,
Keep it up with your amazing work!
My style is fall: cardigans, boots, long sleeves, black on black
My environment is summer: spaghetti straps, kimonos, wedges, shorts, and light colors
This is very helpful but I have a lot of homework to do 😂
For me it's the other way round: I love summer clothes, but can only wear them for about 4 months of the year.

This is so accurate, I love bright colors and skater dresses (since I'm from South Florida). I noticed in Atlanta people do not wear a lot of bright colors, usually just neutrals or pastels. When I lived in LA everyone wore black and white, and I did not which drew a lot of attention to me.

Great job!!
Love this topic! I realized I had a HUGE disconnect between my style and where I live when it came to my shoes. Thank you for this great advice!! xx

I love being classy and "dressing to impress" so to say, because I absolutely love looking polished and more sophisticated with my style. i have worn workout leggings and hoodies for way too long, it's not cute anymore!
audrey, i have become addicted to watching you, for at least a few minutes, almost every day. it isn't about the fashion; it's your long-term approach, your attention to detail, the pleasure you take in it, and your general positivity. love it.
I love your style and everything you wear. Don’t take negative comments to heart.
Right, Audrey could make a potato sack look elegant! Love her style! 💟
BA sounds wonderful!
Stay safe and well 😎
Ooooh do you perchance have a link to any? I've been looking for that type of shirt!
You have a remarkable attitude towards life in general, have helped me in so many way. Thank you!!!
This is so good to hear. I live in a place that is SO casual, but I love to dress up. This is encouraging to hear 😊
"What to do if your personal style doesn't match your body type?"
🙏❤️
Clepsidra Sideral ....great answer!
Such a great idea! I have so many outfit ideas, but so many do not work because of my larger breast size
No such thing. If you have a body it’s the right type. F*** the haters.
@@rodittis
You're right, but it's not about others as much as it is about me & how I'd like to see my style flatter my shape in the mirror.. :)
For example, my style is usually sporty/casual..
Furry underweaaaar
Thanks so much Audrey! Celebrating our individual style is so important! Loved the video!😊
With love from a huge fan
thank you thank you thank you! I live in the Midwest and feel like I have to dress less flashy when I'm here vs. the coastal cities!!
Oh how I can relate. KY definitely does that to me.
@@Cfoots03 this video has actually inspired me to dress as nice as I want to at work. No one has said anything to me, but I really don't mind anymore if they do :)
Talia Bhaiji right!!!! Same!!!
Thank you! You're videos are so calming and have helped me get through this quarantine while learning something new.
Max I totally get you. I feel, the same
Stuff ‘em!
Where I live everyone love sneakers and sports wears. I feel like an alien or stuck up libriarian all the time. Want to move so bad 😅
Can we swap? 😁 I love sandals but live somewhere where it's cold most of the time
@@ines4242 hahaha. I love cold! 😅😅
I love the way you dress..classy, casual it's so comfortable and elegant.. Thank you Audrey for demonstration so many style options..Love!
I never even thought about my environment influencing my outfits. Thank you for this video! Such good content!
You are such a ray of sunshine im glad I’ve found ur channel. Ur voice is very soothing too
Great topic!
