2023 RAF Interview - How I Passed With Flying Colours

  • In this video will be unscripted everything is off the top of my head and I hope you can gain some insight on how I passed for the RAF Interview and how I prepared for it. If you have any questions then please feel free to drop me a comment and I will answer them the best I can.
What I didn't mention on the video:
    1. My interview was done over the phone no face to face. Make sure you're in a quiet room or as quiet as you can get it.
    2. My main preparation was to do at least 3-5 mock interviews a day for two weeks, I had a partner that acted as the interviewer. We had flash cards with the questions written down for her to ask me.
    3. If asked about the role of the RAF I revised examples to my answer. For example, saying the RAF has a humanitarian role, I would then say about a previous operation and give a brief description about it.
    4. DO NOT use notes in the interview they can tell if you are using notes I committed everything to memory.
    5. I forgot to mention they did ask me about diversity in the RAF which I didn't revise for at all but I'll put them in the question box below. It's not rocket science, look up what the diversity is in the RAF and basic human respect.
    Questions I Revised:
    1. What is the history of the RAF and it's most defining moment?
    2. What is the role of the RAF?
    3. When was NATO formed, why and what is the RAF's role in it?
    4. When was the UN formed and why?
    5. Tell me about the RAF airpower.
    6. Why is it you want to join the RAF?
    7. Could you tell me current operations going on in the RAF?
    8. Would you be willing to take a life?
    9. Where will your training be and how long? (Phase 1 & 2)
    10. Who is the current Air Chief Marshal?
    11. What responsibilities do you have?
    12. What is the contract length?
    13. What is the RAF's policy on diversity?
    14. What qualifications can you get?
    15. Where can your first tour possibly be?

hello, I recently completed the raf interview and I am a 17 yo from tamworth, england. This will be the first ever job I do and I would like to let you know, as long as you prepare correctly and expect the complete worst then as long as you read the information on the website anyone can pass. It’s very much common sense and passion. Treat the interview like it’s going to make you fail, expect the worse, and do you best, perform your best, give yourself rest, and smash that interview. You’ll smash it as long as you have given it your all. Ignore your family, and stay confident regardless of their thoughts. and honest.

For my interview, I used the STAR interview structure (Situation, action, task, result). As a basic question and answer let me explain:
Question - Please show/tell me an example where you have used your teamwork skills in order to complete a task or dedicate a specific personality towards the situation at hand.
S situation - ex. The problem which occurred within the group was someone not giving enough thought to the safety behind cooking when on the course.
T task - (what did I have to accomplish to resolve the problem) I was challenged to talk to the individual and explain where they went wrong and how they can resolve the problem, whilst using communication skills, I was able to come to a conclusion to solve the problem.
A Action - (Explain what you did word by word and be as clear as possible with the recruiter what it is YOU did to help).
R Result - What did you manage to achieve and what did it help within your group. How did it help continue the problem and how are you going to move on without having the same issues.
If the interview is online (which it was in my case) notes are not permitted, I would advise you to revise and revise and look online for the structure of the questions, every military interview uses a clear structure and they like to see that you have a lot of knowledge regarding the application process, this is first impressions, especially good for the interview stage.
Use your initiative - they like to know your looks on things and like to see you ask questions during the interview in order for you to looks inquisitive and show interest. The best thing you can do in an interview is be as smart and as honest as possible, it’s no good lying to the recruiter. It’ll only impress them more if you have the courage to talk a bit about your background and most importantly what pushed you into joining the raf.
I beg rat you go elsewhere on the internet and gather ever little bit of information possible (when the name of the head of the raf and his age and his background, how the raf came about, who decided to create the raf). Be equipped on the littlest questions you know, they will be impressed to see a huge knowledge about the history of the air force.
I hope this has helped you out and I wish you the best of luck with your interview,
I was very much thrown into the deep end for this job at 16yo when I first applied I was absolutely terrified for what was to come.
Once you have a better understanding, I promise it puts your mind as ease and prepares your body for your phase one which I start at the end of January, I cannot and must not tell you the date. My father was a sergeant, regimental gunner in the raf and I am following in his steps!
      All the best!🎉

    Hi again Jake,
Thanks for the very informative video.
I have my Interview booked in a week. From watching your video, it's very extensive and it seems like they would be asking quite a lot. Would you recommend re-booking the interview 14 days from day I recieved the invitation? or do you think this revision is feasible within a week?

    • @JakeGchannel
      @JakeGchannel  25 дней назад

Thanks! Glad you find it helpful 🙂 good question and to be honest there’s no simple answer as it’s all individual. For me personally a week was way enough just due to the amount of revision I was doing and how well my answers were getting structured and remembered. If you’re finding yourself getting the answers down confidently then a week should be fine. However, keep in mind that your worst enemy is yourself (meaning your mind) I couldn’t tell you the amount of times that I was close to pushing things back or not doing them at all because I was imagining/guessing what it could be like and I always (for me anyway) over estimated
how hard it will be or the repercussions for the outcome I didn’t want. Lastly, I learned that setting things in motion that are time sensitive (like giving yourself a week) makes me work more effective and hard even though I don’t like it. This happens especially in basic training as every week there’s a new exam/practical test so it’s good training to do it now.
Obviously this is just me, doesn’t mean it’ll work for you and you may need that extra time but don’t slip into the habit of having that extra time because you’re nervous/worried as you don’t have luxury in Halton (unless you’re going cranwell then I have no idea what that’s like) hope this helps.

Hi mate ive been in the RAF for over 4 years now the basic training comprises 3 main phases 1st phase being an introduction to the air force ie kit, kit, drill and fitness, taught loads about the RAF you then transition into the regiment phase which is 4 smaller phases from first aid, Radiological, biological, chemical and nuclear skills and defences and learning how to operate the rifle you'll then do blue warrior to test all of them skills out in the field (be prepared to get muddy wet and cold.) the final phase is spent doing lots of inspections and drill for your pass out parade, youll also do a few exams to test if you've retained what you've learnt and that's it. it'll be hard to start with but stay on top of your fitness and keep an eye out for the small details in inspections and you'll have a great time so many great memories from my time going through. best of luck to you!

Yeah I mean any form of the military is a great to have on your CV because getting in it let a lone staying there + progressing up is a huge achievement. Obv it all depends on the trade you choose but most would be great in the civie world. However i would say think of a few more reasons than that as its not easy to get into plus have that as your core reason for at least 4-5 years might wave.

I spent twenty three years in the RAF, years of military experience stands you in good stead for life after the military,. But life is a lot simpler if you take up a trade that is directly transferable to civilian life. that's what I told my grandson, so he joins in May as an Electrician. He already thinks he may move into the offshore wind farm industry post RAF. If he had been an Aircraft Electrician he would be limited to aircraft for example. From first walking into the recruitment office to starting training will be thirteen months. Stick with it, once you are in, take every opportunity to take any qualification you can, Start getting fit long before you end up taking your fitness test and keep the fitness up until after basic training. For for it and best of luck

@@andyyankz474 That's great to hear and I appreciate and am glad the videos are of use to you. Just remember another tip that maybe of use to you and others and one I have learned personally throughout this journey is to leave your ego at the door. For me it was my cardio, I didn't want to accept the level of cardiovascular fitness I was at so I tried running much faster and quicker than my body is capable of then finding myself failing at what I wanted it to achieve, resulting in low-confidence, doubtful thoughts etc constantly repeating the same cycle. In the end I just accepted where I am, lowered my expectations to a point where I'm capable of doing it but still pushes me to increase stamina or whatever I am aiming for. This, of course, could be taken from a universal standpoint, in any subject or area of the application not just fitness.
