Paimon saying "Fatui are bad guys" is less Genshin pushing the narrative that Fatui are pure evil and is more Paimon's character showing, Paimon tends to really hold grudges and with the Fatui who has often wronged us with few helping us it makes a ton of sense as to Paimon would still say "Fatui are bad guys" with their simplistic view
My perspective on Paimon is that they're not always meant to convey the Traveler's thoughts, they still have their own worldview and character to display. So sometimes in serious situations it's best to take what they say with the idea that "You're the only one thinking that, Paimon"

    • @EternaMidnight

I share your sentiments about how female characters are written in Genshin, and thought they absolutely knocked it out of the park with Navia. When she was first introduced in the Archon quest I dismissed her as another hyper-girly waifu, but by the end of it she was my favorite character in Fontaine, and may become a favorite playable character, period. I really hope she's an indicator that Hoyo have taken the criticism to heart and maybe actually hired a female writer or two.

2:47 To be honest, Lyney is kind of similar to Lynette. He is a quiet and more reserved person when he's alone with her according to Lynette, and Lyney who says himself he's much more boring, quiet and not that talkative usually. He just forces himself to endoce a role which makes him act and talk like a socialbutterfly, a direct consequence of his trauma also as he doesn't feel like he can trust anyone to show his real self; himself not even understanding who he is anymore.

My only gripe with that trial was Paimon donning that goofy mustache glasses in a trial where a guy just got brutally murdered. Even if it was meant to be some sort of symbolic representation of how the courtroom has become a clownshow, it felt wholly inappropriate and felt like they're doubling down on her immaturity. At the very least, they had enough forsight to not have Paimon don it in the next trail which involved a serial killer and several missing women.

I really love the Fontaine Archon quest in general, especially Furina, Navia and Neuvillette's storyline as my favorite!
It's not too simple as Mondstadt's AQ. It's not too expositionally dumped with Zhongli's encyclopedia dialogue about plants apparently, along with an under developed cast as Liyue AQ. It's not rushed and halfhearted as Inazuma's AQ that needs a character quest to redeem the resolution a little like Ei's. And It's not too slow as Sumeru AQ at the first half of the acts pacing wise.
Fontaine is just good all around these aspects from their past mistakes that Hoyo's writers has learned^^
Can't wait to find out more about Furina's lore and Neuvillette's lore based from the trailers for the 4.1 Archon quest, and they'll probably be my top favorite Fontaine characters next to Navia.

  • @ortah2616
    @ortah2616 9 месяцев назад +23

Even thought this video isn't about it, I do think the main reason why I thoroughly love Fontaine is because of the exploration, slight gameplay spoilers.
When it came to Inazuma and Sumeru I wasn't big on exploring them, the reason why is because I'm not super into the metroidvania style of design applied constantly to such an open world, the idea of finding something inaccessible and coming back later, with an open world it's harder to pull this off because it's difficult to create a distinct and memorable area for such design that requires players remember to come back later, and don't even get me started on the 150 pin cap.
Fontaine has none of that, there are locked off areas but you will always directed to unlock them in one way or another, even then those locked off areas are distinctly made enough to be memorable so even if I wasn't directed to unlock them I would remember to go back even without a map pin

Navia was a pleasant surprise for me, she's already such a complex character, can't wait to see more of her. It was a good move to make her "story quest" part of the main quest and let her get closure before she's released as it allowed more wiggling room for her character. I wish Ayaka was handled like this too, I love my Shirasagi Himegimi but she deserved better than just being filler in-between AQs.

I know that I am very much in the minority lmao but I was SO HAPPY to see how cold Lumine was to Lyney and Lynette at the end. I'm a huge advocate for Traveler being their own character and having their own feelings/morals/decisions, Lumine is one of my favorite characters in the game in my ideal imagined version of her, and it's always frustrated me to see opportunities where she SHOULD be angry or SHOULD have strong feelings get completely glossed over. I love Childe, Scara is a great character too, all of the Fatui are not purely evil bad guys, of course, but Lumine has never been allowed to be as angry or cold with them as I desperately wish the game would let her be, every time they reappear in the story, after all the Fatui have done to hurt her in the past. So yes, while Lyney and Lynette are not as culpable as say the harbingers, and deserve more sympathy in that regard, it was a breath of fresh air to see Lumine FINALLY be allowed to express some feelings of bitterness/coldness/distrust/betrayal towards the Fatui, because it's frankly been long overdue. Again, I'm not saying they entirely deserved it, but it's understandable from Lumine's side. I loved seeing it. Please let Lumine continue to have agency and actual feelings about what she's been through, hoyoverse!! There's SO much potential with that for the situation Childe is currently in, actually, but like I said considering how friendly they've been with Childe up to this point...... I'm not getting my hopes up even after the Lyney and Lynette stuff lmao

The only other time in the main story Traveler when has actually been angry was after what happened to Teppei. Surprisingly their anger was well done in the Inazuma arc despite it's issues.

    • @ProPinkist
      @ProPinkist 9 месяцев назад +7

@@ortah2616 YES!! THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WAS ALLUDING TO!! I feel like I can never say that Traveler's anger after what happened to Teppei is one of my favorite parts of the game so far, because Teppei himself and Inazuma's writing as a whole is so.... lackluster, to put it lightly, but regardless of the actual execution of his plotline or how you feel about him personally, Teppei was important to the Traveler!! Their reaction to him was one of the very few times so far where the Traveler has been allowed to be selfish and express genuine anger and grief and just.... lose themself in their emotions and be reckless!! I HATE that it's over faster than you can even blink, and I HATE that Teppei doesn't continue to haunt the Traveler and impact how they interact with harbingers and Fatui in general (and Ei... ugh) going forward, just because hoyoverse probably saw the backlash to Inazuma's writing so they decided to just ignore what happened in the archon quest as much as possible from then on (which leads to a very awkward and unrealistic outcome for the Wanderer quest, wherein it's like Teppei never existed, and Traveler doesn't hold a single shred of a grudge against the main person who killed him.... seriously, idk how you could possibly write a Scaramouche redemption quest without mentioning Teppei even once, but somehow hoyo managed to do it...!)..... ugh. Inazuma was very poorly written in so many ways, but I still wish the things Traveler went through there weren't just ignored and forgotten about, because that scene where they run off after Teppei dies still sticks with me even now. Their anger at the twins would have been the perfect time to address it again... but I guess I gotta take what I can get and just be glad they got to be angry at all *sigh*

What I love about Fontaine is doesn't waste your time with excessive dialogue bloat and lore dumps. I adore the serious both the mainline and side plots are as it shows that Teyvat isn't all anime fun and games, but an actually lived world with many dark elements like our own. The new cast of characters all have importance to the overall plot and are not thrown away like what Sumeru did to Collei, after the manga built her up. They even made Paimon into a likable character who influences the plot. Overall Fontaine is the best region by far.

For inazuma, It's kazuha and beidou and that's really it. For liyue, its childe, zhongli and xiao and for mondstadt, it's venti, kaeya, diluc and signora for the first meeting. During act I and entire Opera Epiclese confrontation I felt like I was already finishing Fontaine story, not starting it. Intensity hit me hard.
Act II... well, investigation with Navia started slow and felt totally separate from our main case, almost like filler, but boy, oh boy, further progress had proven me wrong, including Vacher's fate.
Navia surprised me as well. Noble girl being active rather than reactive but having time to eat sweets with Traveler and Paimon and chill out (also her second bodyguard, Silver, is the funniest NPC in the game, prove me wrong).
Clorinde too, she's not a bad person, as trailer and initial impression of animated cutscene made her out to be. Just strongly respects the Champion Duelist rules is what made her do the deed while facing Callas.
Neuvillette wasn't sinister either. Just a man having problems with his inner self. I expect a lot from him in 4.1.
Despite her flaws, I love Furina from the first sight. Her entrance was the best out of all Archons, with her immediate panic reaction to the Traveler standing his/her ground against her.
I have some mixed feelings towards Lyney and Lynette. Can't specify why, really. He helped us out from the start to win against Focalors' silly judgement of Paimon as "flying object", without any reason, though he could ignore our problem with ease. His sister haven't had any strong moments in my opinion, aside from comic relief ones or during his Story Quest. Freminet was barely on the screen. Same with Charlotte.

When I played the second Archon quest with Navia, there are times where I felt super akward to be there, which might have affected my full enjoyment of it, how do I explain... Basically, it's when you go to a friend's house and at that time just happen to run into them and their parents arguing or having a scene (basically their 'housework'). I felt that way each time Navia and Melus talk about Callas, with them just casually dropping personal information (like with Navia's mom etc.) and just having a moment about it while the traveler's just standing right there to the side. I mean, I'm sure there have been quests before where the mc was in a similar situation but, I dunno, maybe the music just amplified the feeling of "I probably shouldn't be here" more than the other ones for me.
But, otherwise, it felt really nice witnessing Navia and her family being the main ones taking initiative to end their long-standing regret.

The story telling was much better executed, you can really feel how much the game has grown. Instead, he has a deep respect to the Traveler's strength and clearly considers us friends which has been shown a million times. He even was happy that we met his younger brother and talks about his family - his most precious thing - with us.

I just love Navia, she is my second most beloved character after Scara. And nothing can beat my love for him so that is a great spot.
Furina, Neuvilette and Lyney are also greatly written. The character writing got so, soo good in Fontaine.
On your nitpic: Lyney and Lynette saved them from getting arrested by Furina. So part of why the Traveler went so far for them is because they may wanted to repay their kindness. Still I agree it was a bit weird.
Also the Fatui being evil is more connected with Paimons character. We see her being mean to multiple characters even though they redeemed themselves or are in the middle of it. She often stays on her first impression and often disvalues growth if she decided to dislike someone. So you could say it is more that she holds a long grudge and seems to leans more in the black and white thinking.

What I just like about Genshin Impact is that the writers to a certain extend listen towards the feedback.
Many complained about the rushed later half of Inazuma and thus Sumeru got 5 Chapters instead of 3 only for Fontaine to streamline it all even further.

Honestly, my impression of Furina is that she’s an incredibly foolish actor.
She even says it herself. She calls herself the lead actor, and everything happening in Fontaine, especially the trials, are the play she is acting in.
I feel like even the confrontation at the beginning of the Fontaine quests happened simply because the people at the scene expected it, and Furina was simply trying to meet audience expectations.
Remember that originally the reason for Furina being there seemed to be to greet the traveler(and also indirectly give compliments to herself about how she’s smart, by saying that the traveler was wise to seek her), and changed gear only after the people started saying that the meeting between traveler and Furina must’ve been for an epic duel. Heck, she even called the traveler’s arrival a moment worth toasting with a wine glass.
I also like how after the false accusations trial we see her actually grow to be a bit more competent, even if it is slightly, cuz she doesn’t wanna get embarrassed by false accusations again.

It’s great how much Hoyo has improved their storytelling since the release of Sumeru! It feels like I’m watching a full on anime! But’s that’s also kind of a double edged sword. It feels like I’m watching an anime, not playing a game. I feel like each nation since Mondstadt has had less and less gameplay integrated into the archon quest. However I do very much appreciate the piecing together of evidence mini game as that includes some much needed involvement of the player. Hoyo needs to remember that they are making a game here that’s meant to be played. It really says something when you can watch a play through on RUclips and have pretty much the same experience as when you play the game yourself. I feel like we should have played through the cutscene as Navia when the Gardemeks attacked and played as Childe when he tried to leave the Opera Epiclese. I was thinking during the quest that Chloride and Childe would have a duel, now obviously they didn’t but if they did I really wanted to be able to play that part.
Now with all that said, I still would like to say that I very much enjoyed the archon quest and appreciate how far they have come from a storytelling standpoint. I didn’t enjoy it as much as Sumeru but that’s simply because the whole detective/courtroom drama isn’t the kind of story I’m interested in regardless of how well it’s executed.
(I’ve been trying to figure out how to word my thoughts on the Fontaine archon quest for a while now, but I’ve finally done so I believe. It’s been so very polarizing for me.)
And finally, great video! I agree with all of the points you made!

6:50 YESSSSS honestly I'm glad traveler was angry. Cause I was pissed at Lyney for lying to us for THESE EXACT REASONS. Like this is your trial?? I'm your attorney and you kept secrets from us! One of the biggest reason is because during that trial I kept trying every combination before I failed near the end only to learn that the reason we couldn't piece the story together was because Lyney kept information from us! The game kept forcing me to go back and connect the evidences but turns out we weren't meant to win that part anyways. Honestly after the trial I wasn't even upset at Furina for being super petty during the whole quest anymore. Like I felt bad for us, cause like why would you not check the dead body for evidence? How dare spring up these new information that should've been basic knowledge before the trail even began?? Ya fucked up mine's and Furina's whole arguments
It was a great story tho and I was super invested. Honestly I'm thankful to Lyney's Trail because at the beginning I did not like Furina, I thought she was super petty. But after the quest I related so hard to her frustration during that trail with all these people keeping information from us, WhEn We'rE yoUr AtTorNeyssSsSsSSsSs

tbh, if it weren't for Traveler's clear friendship with Childe and Scaramouche, i'd understand their hesitance towards trusting Lyney and Lynette, but treating them such hostility while holding Childe's vision for safe keeping. and that's not counting if you're a new player who has no event experience with Childe and have only met him during the archon quest in Liyue, his character story, and in Fontaine.
i'm also a bit tired of the point that Traveler doesn't want to be Teyvat's hero and just wants to find their sibling and leave. while yes, that's true, even the traveler themselves isn't sure about it anymore, considering there's one dialog option with i think Yae or someone who asks them and they say "to find my sibling?" and they get called out for being unsure. plus, they HAVE found their sibling and found that they're actively leading the group that has been nothing but antagonistic towards them. i'm sorry, but if either of my sisters abandoned me to lead a cause that has knowingly put me and many others i care about in danger, i'mma have some issues.
i'm fine with traveler having their own motives, as much as people say they're just a self insert, they're not, and that's fine. it's just the double standards with that moment with Lyney and Lynette. at least now it seems they're easing off a bit of their hostility with the latest quests.

About Paimon calling them "bad guys", I think the reason is that Paimon serves as a foil for the audience, like, much of her conclusions (or lack of them) probably comes as a representation of what the common audience/players may think, that's why she never understands the complicated stuff, to simplify things for the players, and that's why she says "good guys" and "bad guys", because of the audience/players that can easily see it that way as well. I don't think that that's necessarily how the Traveler thinks, and definitely not how Genshin will want us to feel later down the line. I believe that even Paimon will learn that Fatui are not all "bad guys".
I am pretty sure that the more Snezhnaya approaches us, the more we will see everyone there in a more tridimentional and fleshed out way. Especially since, curiously, the cryo archon the Tsaritsa is called "the god of love" for some reason, or so I heard. That surely is contrasting to the idea that she is the one big villain behind the fatui.

I mean I like Navia, her Act 2 Story was nice and interesting, but I feel like thats it. In the short time we met her, we learned about her tragic past, we learned about her present times struggle, and we helped resolve it all. In terms of a fictional character, she is done. Finished. What else can you add to it without it seeming like an Apollo Justice situation?
I hope im wrong, but i fear that she will be just used as "French Beidou", a kindhearted woman with a sketchy profession being nice. If you ask me, the mystery of the water disappearing case should have been a bit more drawn out, in order to weave in another struggle for her.

@@ortah2616 oh that's fair. As I said, I hope I am wrong, since I liked what I've seen of Navia so far, but Mihoyo can be spotty with their writing and maybe it was just lighting in a bottle.
It's a shame that this company trained me to be pessimistic

i mean the archon quest isnt over yet and we have like a version or two until its over so i presume they will flesh the characters out a bit more ( hopefully)
or at least write a good story quest for them

I came back to genshin after i hearing my friends talking about fontaine nonstop and i was not expecting to be glued on to the screen like i did! After Neuvilette straight up bonked Childe to prison i was sold, why tf is he so powerful? what's up with Furina being so insecure? so many questions aaaa
Btw i've been bingeing your channel and i absolutely love your videos, good job!!

My favorite thing with Sumeru and now especially with Fontaine, each and every character introduced felt direct and necessary to the story and its development, but even sumeru had its, uh, moments with this. Charlotte may not be a super pivotal character to the story, but she helps to fill out Fontaine as a nation and make it feel lively instead of all the action being right in front of us all the time.
Which takes me to my second favorite thing about Sumeru and especially Fontaine, the place feels lively and the characters feel realistic with their separate lives outside of the action, quests, and their occupations! They show us perspectives other than the Traveler’s and some of them have their own agendas whilst working right alongside us.

I really got captured by Genshin's social commentary presented through the cultures of the nations of Teyvat. Mondstadt and Liyue critiquing and praising aspects of Westernness and Easternness created such an interesting atmosphere to explore but then... Inazuma happened and that felt mostly like a series of stories about how I shouldn't trust Japanese people. Sumeru happened and the focus on the dangers of social media was topical but just a bit too shallow. There was also a disappointing lack of commitment to Indian, Arabic and Kemet culture in Sumeru, just compare the instruments used for Inazuman and Liyue music to the instruments used for Sumeru music, Sumeru's music is great music but so much less culturally specific (and as an added nerd gripe, I understand Sumeru City is meant to be fantastical but it feels completely unwalkable!)
I really hope I find that passion again in Fontaine.

Sadly i feel like furina and arlechino are going to drop there brat/scicopathic and get the "shywhy uwu hot anime girl that needs the main char to comfort them" when they come out just to get people to like them more just like raiden, hopefully not cause i dont want one of my hyped characters to come out and be written like shit in the main story again like raiden, (i am still disappointed in how she turned out and i have also made alot of raiden stans angry because i have said there fav anime waifu was written bad in the main story)

not sure about Arlecchino, but im almost certain that Furina wont follow such. We already have two characters that really resonate with Furina; that being Fischl and Wanderer, both characters went through a lot (Fischl arguably less, but both her backstory and 2.8 Archipelago event really fleshed out her character), but in the end stayed relatively the same/similar. I doubt Furina will change much, other than wanting to impress the traveler more (failing while doing so), but she still will be trying to show her superiority above them. Also it'd kinda ruin a lot of character dynamics (neuvillette, lyney, navia, obviously traveler). Dont get me wrong, she WILL get character development, but she wont change completely like Ei did

Those Stans can eat shit if they can't stand criticism over a badly written character. Raiden was terribly written, with bad first impressions.

Furina could maybe end up like that but I highly doubt Arlecchino would if she's playable. I get the feeling Arlecchino's interactions toward the Traveler will be like talking to a slightly nicer Signora

@@ortah2616 since we know nearly nothing about the knave (except that she's nice to orphans) and is a short tempered Fatui our relationship could go with the direction of Ajax (relatively positive terms but wary of each other)

for me the pick with traveler being mad at the twins is exactly what you said, that they think all fatui are the worst people ever, when thats not the case, they can just be people trying to survive, a lot of them actually dont even like Tsaritsa, they just want celestia to stop being dumb

I don't know who is lying and who is being honest. Can we trust Lyney and Lynette? I hope so. Archelino? I think not. Neuvilette? Probably we can. Furina? Not right now. There is so many mysteries and half-truths. What happened to the gnosis? what is the oratrice? What is childe Role in all this? I love we have a ton of mysteries, and instead of answers we have more questions.

  • @nunobatista5822

I can understand traveller being a bit angry at liney and linette but there was no reason to get that mad, he probably only stayed because Furina was there otherwise he would probably leave in that moment.
Meanwhile while he is aware of Childe, he does not have that reaction, Childe the dude who tried to kill him and destroy a nation, the dude who is always saying they will have another battle soon (basically threath), and you take his vision to give it back later? Why dont just put her on the trash and be done whit it? Liney did not tell some things and the traveller almost lose his head, and whit Childe its all good? Oh hell no
I guess his vision will be a nice trophy to put next to Signora crown at least

I like most of the crew in Fontaine, but Clorinde is too shallow in my personal opinion, I don't like her at all, I felt like hoyo want to sell her not by her personalty but by her design and how badass she is like most characters in Inazuma, and I'm tired of it
