Being entrusted with a renowned franchise like Metal Slug comes with great responsibility.
Wanting to pay proper respect to its iconic roots while developing Metal Slug Tactics, we visited the original devs at SNK’s headquarters in Japan.
Legendary Game Division Studio 1 sat with us to talk about what made Metal Slug such a beloved game franchise, and what it means to make a Metal Slug Game today.
Metal Slug Tactics will release this fall on PC, PlayStation 4|5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

If it weren’t for Metal Slug I wouldn’t have played video games today, it’s safe to say that this franchise has impacted my childhood gaming experience.
It was very worth checking out this video just for Kiss in the Dark 3:09.
You see the DOTEMU developers and you know why they make great games.
It's great to SNK being more and more prominent again.
It's pretty funny, 20s after the start of the video I told myself, "Wow, it really feels like an Archipel-made video." and then I see the "Special thanks to Archipel" in the description.
Metal Slug is truly the run n gun game of all time, i've been playing this since 6, today im 16 and i keep playing it. It just never gets boring. The sprites, music, story, its all being stored here.

You're better off checking the main creator new project instead of expecting something from SNKP though, none of the original talent remain in the company and the series main artist and programmer who worked on 1,2,3 and X are working on a new PC/PS5 game

@@Leosalvaje_Black Finger Jet, a new game being made by a couple of former Metal Slug developers at Kohachi Studio.
@@SergeCCross Some hopes still remain in the possibility of outsourcing a new MS exactly to those former devs who left SNK. Even if the company can only afford a new game in 3d graphics, being made by the same people could help to make it work. Besides, that would not be the end of the world... it just needs the right cell shading art style and the right cartoony gameplay style. (Look at Arc Systems games now)
@@carlosaugusto9821 most of the original staff is making a new project called Black Finger Jet though, which looks like a spiritual succesor to Metal Slug's, there's even a trailer out there
this video was beautiful, ive been a fan since Metal Slug 1 in 1996, so you can imagine the nostalgic feelings

Pixel art games never lose their charming look, and the Metal Slug games are amoungst the best. Can't wait to get this game.
Last time I was this early Metal Slug was a 2D run and gun game with beautiful sprite work.
Metal Slug animations still holds up
Beautiful video and the music heard in the first minutes moved me, pure nostalgia in (re)hearing how the great myth called Metal Slug was born.
Thanks to this video I discovered (because I didn't know) that Max D is the only one of the original staff to have remained in SNK while the rest of the interviewees are people who worked from Metal Slug 5 onwards (my dream would be to see Metal Slug 5 in its "truly" complete form).
I have good expectations both for this Metal Slug Tactics, but also for Black Finger Jet, a game conceived to be the "spiritual brother" of Metal Slug created by (almost) all the original staff of the first Metal Slug (understood as 1,2, X and 3) which now operates under Kohachi Studios (founded by a former SNK member btw).

Even though I live in a completely different culture (I'm from Spain), Metal Slug and the SNK legacy managed to resonate with me in such a way that it changed me. Love the candid conversation on game development. This is so cool, thank you for putting this together and sharing!

Must admit I teared up a little watching this. Metal Slug is iconic in so many ways- when the first trailer for Tactics popped up, my heart stopped. You could see the passion immediately, even if the format was totally different. Really looking forward to Tactics and hope it lives up to the hype, and earns due success.
The 90s and 2000s were full of excellent sprite based video games, but when I hear pixel art animation only two of them surge at the top: Darkstalkers/Vampire Saviour and Metal Slug.
Metal Slug 3 is a masterclass in how to animate pixel art. That's why it's as enjoyable as it was more than 20 years ago.
I'm glad to see Tactics is going that way. Day 1 buy for me.
if SNK wasn't run by business folks and lawyers we would have a pixel art renaissance

Metal Slug looked incredible back and in the day and remains a masterclass in game art. I'm so happy that the series is being continued in a new genre that preserves the legacy of pixel art excellence.
I am really looking forward to get my hands on this game. I love the original Metal slug and SNK and this game looks to have the heart and soul of the original series and developers.

Ah, soka, the OG Team may Not work anymore on the series, but the new Team who is working on tactics are actually die hard fans of the Franchise, like it seems. I wondered, because I knew there where new devs, but I saw many references of the OG mechanics transformed & implemented in this tactic Game. Meaning: Appreciation & love for Detail, what usually doesn't happen often when new devs continue Franchises.
Like I said: "I'm sharp for Metal Slug Tactics!"
I desperately want to make everyone at Dotemu and the original creators of Metal Slug to be aware of the art of Emerson tung Tank HHead series.
If you look it up you can sse the same energy of "Veicular creativity" in his art that you see in Metal Slug.
I love the Bosses in the series and their designs, but i'd also love to see this series grow even stronger by showing us even crazier bosses and vehicles!
Akio, who was also one of the original pixel artists for Metal Slug 1,2 and 3 was welcomed like a god when he made a twitter account. I hope everyone involved in tis series can see how much loved Metal Slug is even today.
Besides tactics, i really want to see another installment the reinvigorates the run and gun arcade style. I'm wishing you all the best with the game! I hope it is a great success!!!!

This looks amazing and I didnt even think about the fasct of having to remake sprites to fit the tactical rpg pov. Great stuff, definitely looking forward to playing this.

I wonder if Leikir and Dotemu is gonna continue the Run-n-Gun genre if Metal Slug Tactics was succesful, i feel they have more passion with Metal Slug IP rather than the current SNK or the-game-that-should-not-be-named.

Metal Slug 6 and XX deserve Nintendo releases. Even I wish for King of Fighters '98 UM, 2002 UM, and XI to be available with extra new features that XIII GM can have too.

aren't SNK owned by the saudi prince now?
This is a common rumor regarding SNK. That dude just owns a lot of shares. This is a publicly traded company, and he’s not in the board of directors. He can technically affect the decision in the way any shareholders can, but he’s not generally shown to directly influence the planning. Kenji Matsubara is the president and he’s really the one guiding SNK.
Any chance we're going to get a character that actually looks Asian, no? I just thought I'd ask, and never mind seeing a black character I rather not, the way these people draw them.
