Remember how happy we were before everyone wanted their camera to see in the dark, shadows weren’t lifted to extremes in post, and a PowerBook G4 just worked?
I made one step backwards and just got myself an Olympus E1 with a 5megapixel Kodak CCD sensor specifically for its film look aesthetic …. to go with my Canon 5D and a FujiFilm S3 Pro. These early digital cameras from the mid 00’s really do have something going for them.
Love mine. Either with the 30mm macro - stunning results. But mostly an adapted Super Takumar 50mm - fits the body just perfect, an awesome looking combo and it created some magic
Just bought one, I was initially brought to the idea of buying an old digital camera with a CCD sensors due to a video on why digicams or cheap cameras with CCD sensors are well worth it in 2022 because of the colors and film like look of the images. Then I searched up the E-1 and E-300 and thought the E-300 was the best choice for me. I just recently ordered one after seeing this video. I cannot wait and thanks for telling us that 8GB CF cards work on this camera. Should be all I need and will buy spares just in case. I cannot wait to shoot with it. Been wanting a DSLR and technically this is one and it has a CCD sensor so I’m very excited to say the least!
Love your reviews on the early DSLR's out there. Like your Canon 1Ds,& the E-300 (have one) & the E-500 (have a couple). The CCD look is so film like as you say,& I never really relished being cut off from my film gear/look. Especially miss Kodachrome. Not surprised that the ''Panalux'' 50mm F1.4 has gone up. The Leica affiliation produced really creamy hues wide-open...need to use it more. Thanks for your labor of love in calling attention to the many fine sleeper systems out there!
Love your videos man, I find them really relaxing to watch. I just ordered an Olympus E500, which has a kodak CCD too. It came with 2 lenses the 14-45 and a telephoto. I can't wait to shoot with it and compare to my other CCD cameras.
Thanks for this excellent video on this classic Olympus DSLR. I still have one of these with the bulbous battery grip on it. Still have a decent selection of 4/3's lenses too -- 14-42mm, 8mm Fisheye, 50mm f/2 Macro, 35mm f/3.5 Macro, 40-150mm, and the wonderful 50-200mm f/3.5-4. The Kodak CCD sensor produces uniquely rich colors -- very much like the old Kodachrome slide film. I don't shoot with it much, but can't bring myself to part with it, because it was such a unique style and design. You've inspired me to dig it out and go do some shooting with it! 🙂
Hi, I have a problem with mine, when I shoot in manual mode or A,P,S mode the shutter speed works extremely slow for taking a picture, it takes a lot of time before the picture comes out, the camera works at "normal speed" only when it's set all in Automatic mode. Do you have any suggestions for this issue? Maybe I set some bottoms wrong? I'm not an "expert" or professional photographer but I also have another camera Fuji xe3 and I'm quite able to take really nice Raw and Jpeg pictures in manual with the right exposure, iso , aperture etc so I can't understand the issue with that old Olympus camera. Any possible suggestions? Thanks
I've got an old E-510 (10mp) and an E-10 (4mp). There's just some kind of magic in those old Kodak CCDs. Thanks for the nostalgia. I'm going to have to pull those out and play with them soon. Maybe I'll go ahead and pick up the Olympus 12-60 lens that I always dreamed of back in the day ;-)
Thanks Cliff! By the way, are you @clifftopher from Instagram? Also, thanks for pointing out her name is Alexis. I’ve been referring to her as “the girl from One Month Two Cameras” ‘cause I was too embarrassed to ask what her name is. But yeah, she’s the best. She’s very nice and very knowledgeable.
@@steve_heise I am! I was so impressed and excited by the Onemonthtwocameras channel and her style of photography, that I did some simple detective work; based upon a few comments in her videos she had to have a professional photographic background which wasn't hard to discover.
@@steve_heise you should! They’re cheap on MPB. The autofocus leaves a little to be desired but it’s more than useable. I’ve heard people say the xt2 is more than enough too, so if you want to skip the problems with the xt1 and record in 4k then get the xt2. But make sure to get the grip that extends the recording time!
Hey Steven, I was eagerly waiting for this review since you mentioned you were looking to purchase this camera. And I wasn't disappointed. You're absolutely right when you say that this camera is calling you from the shelf and invites you to take it for a photowalk - it's the same for me. To add some information: I'm using a 16GB SanDisk Ultra (50 MB/s) CF card and my E-300 seems to have no problem whatsoever handling it. Regarding lens selection: it's not a superfast prime, but you should look for the Olympus 25mm f/2.8 pancake. It's not terribly pricey, it's a good performer overall, and really reduces the camera's footprint. Regarding the Kodak sensor: it's my very favourite CCD, and paired with a few manual focus vintage lenses, you really get film-like results. I was lucky enough to find a few adapters (Nikon-4/3, Minolta-4/3, M42-4/3), and I was impressed by what I got out of lenses such as the Helios 58mm f/2, the Minolta 45mm f/2, and the Pentacon 50mm f/1.8. Manual focus with these lenses is not very easy due to the small, not-that-bright viewfinder, and due to the fact that there is no focusing aid like on mirrorless cameras, but patience and slow-shooting is definitely rewarded. I love this camera so much I'm thinking about getting a second body! Great review as usual. Cheers! -Rick
Thanks Rick! I’ve definitely been looking at the 25mm f2.8 and I agree - I like how it creates a much smaller footprint. I need to look into more adapters for film lenses like you mentioned. I’ve got a number of Minolta MD lenses that I’d love to try on this camera. But yeah, there really is something special about this camera. Its just such a joy to use!
@@steve_heise not sure how you'd get on with manual focusing on the small porro viewfinder. Four Thirds pentamirror 95% coverage isn't an easy task with manual glass. Even the E-1 with its magnificent pentaprism 100% coverage is still small due to the FT sensor... If you try it please let me know. Also, not a lot of FT adapters out there...
Love your passion love it!! Do you base your evaluation of the e-300 by looking at jpegs or raw files? What are your settings?? Ps, your pics are great
Hi Steve a lot of the good news is with CCD sensor in your video. It's that phrase again "The look" it's hard to explain I've seen it in old black and white film but not as yet from a CCD sensor. Hopefully one day I'll get CCD and have a look. Thanks for the video.
Thanks! There’s a lot of good CCD cameras in the $50 - $75 range right now. The Olympus E-300 and 500. The Nikon D200 and the Sony A200, just to name a few. Plus the Sony A200 is at a great price right now. I got the one that I’m reviewing in next week’s video for $53 from Robert’s Camera on eBay.
Probably because of RUclips posts like this, the price of the E-300 has become unreasonable and hard to find, but without posts like this Photographers wouldn't know about these great old CCD cameras. Luckily, I still have most of mine from back in the day and they all still work with the exception of a great old LUMIX. Nice pixs taken to illustrate the expressive range and quality of this particular camera and sensor. 👍👍
Can the E-300 still be updated with the version 1.5 software? The OM imaging website confirms my E-300 has the latest version 1.0 and does not require the update? Another issue it accepts the kit lenses 14-45mm and 40-150mm and despite coupling with the 70-300mm ED does not respond electronically? Would appreciate feedback.
Hi Steven, I recently got an E-300 and I totally agree on the picture quality and the invitation to take it out to take photos. The other part that sucks more than not having lenses is nobody make adapters for other lens mounts. I finally found a Nikon f to 4/3 and it is the biggest piece of crap. Lens barely fit, on upside down, lock got stuck, release tab broke so I had to drill out the pin. And it was attached to my zeiss classic 50mm 1.4..
One of my faves was my Oly E10. Despite only 4MP, I made some beautiful images. I still have it, though the rubber grip has gone to jelly and it's mostly unusable. It had a similar but smaller Kodak CCD. When 4/3rds came out, I wanted the E-300 so bad, but couldn't swing the cost. I went with a Sony A300 instead, it also used a CCD, but the images just didn't have that special quality. I think the 10.2MP CCD wasn't as good as the 6MP in the Minolta 7D/5D. As a long time Sony shooter, I've never been as satisfied as I am now that I returned to the Oly camp (EM1,EM5 II, E-pl2). BTW, the CCD's of that era typical had a dynamic range similar to slide film. This prompted manufactures to tune for a more slide film emulation, avoiding the weaknesses of the CCD.
I cant understand why mine works extremely slow on taking a picture when I shot in manula mode or A,S,P mode. It shots normally only when the camera is in automatic mode only. Any suggestions why it works so bad?
