I just stumbled across this as I am looking in to getting a m4/3 camera to compliment my FF kit, and was reminiscing about my start on 4/3 - when they went micro and left the old 4/3 system, I moved on to full frame. @2:40 I worked as a sport photographer with that camera. I shot gymnastics (collegiate level) with it and it kept up just fine. I shot birds in flight with it, too. My hit rate has been better with more modern cameras, but the E-3 got the job done. Though I will admit the very first time I shot with the Nikon D3s and 70-200 f/2.8 VRII it was a bit of a revelation in place of the E-3 with the 36-100 f/2. I actually thought that the lens hadn't worked, because it focused so fast and just stuck on the thing it was focusing on that I thought it hadn't done anything. It was quiet, it was so fast I had missed the focus happening, and it never hunted, it just stayed planted on the thing it was focused on. So while the E-3 can do action just fine, It doesn't do it like a modern camera does.
Still use mine! Works just fine. It was a workhorse for me shooting ice hockey and rugby. I had the 50-200 and 12-60. The 12-60 usually lived on the E-510. Never let me down. I would get around the slower autofocus, I'd just keep brushing the the shutter release. Never had an issue shooting hockey.
I still use my E-3 on occasion if I don't need large image sizes or low light, it's still a nice camera to shoot, and is a rugged old beast that could pretty much survive any conditions. I've mostly moved to an E-M1 Mk2, but sometimes I miss having a mirror flapping around and a bit of glass to look through so it scratches that itch perfectly with the benefit of me being able to still use all the lenses on mirrorless.
I have just bought an E-3. To say it is built like a tank would be an understatement. I think one could demolish a house with it. I have only had time to take a few test shots but initial impression of the image quality is highly favourable.
I always found it takes a really good picture, just suffers a little bit in low light. Selling mine and the pro lenses as it doesn’t get used that much.
@@bensreviews.9311 I suppose the amount of usage is dependant on the nature of one's photography. Would a modern camera, and it's lenses, that provide the same level of build quality, and weather proofing, not cost a small fortune?
My bestie gifted me this camera along with a ton of accessories few months ago, and I love it. The basic drawback for me is the sheer size and weight of the camera and its inability to do video.
If you think the autofocus is slow, try to track down a 12-60mm SWD. With that lens, the E-3 had the world's fastest autofocus when it was released. There are some newer cameras that are faster, but not many.
It may be faster with the SWD lens, but low light is still not good. I love the camera, takes a fantastic picture. But I seem to be shooting more and more in low light and the E3 is just not good at coping with that.
I have to admit that it bothers me a lot when put "social media" as an example of quality or photographic aspiration. if it is to publish on social media you get the most mediocre cell phone. And I understand that whoever is looking for this camera wants to print some of his photos and not be condemned to see photos on a monitor. Having said that, 10 MPX good quality as you say it's enough even if you want to make enlargements larger than A3 as long as you look at them from a reasonable distance and not 5 inches away. Even with the E1 good enlargements of sufficient quality can be obtained. Thank you very much.
I just picked up an E1 with the same lens for cheap. Feels so nice in the hands that I want to use it all the time. Shutter sound is lovely. Weight and balance are just right. I'm enjoying the challenge of using it within it's limitations and just having fun. The E3 is affordable also so I can see myself getting one as well at some point. Nobody seems to want dslrs anymore and olympus ones even less so I'm happy to pick up a few cheap classics.
@@s1dew1nd3r4 The Zuiko top pro 14-35 f2 is quite fast. But for me the Zuiko pro 14-54 is more suitable. It is because the addition 19mm gives you much more flexibility for shooting moving subjects like cars, trains and animals.
I took a lot of pictures of sports during the 2019 Panamerican Games. My E-3 with a 50-200mm SWD was capable enough even for cycling events, AF mostly ok, good keeper rates. About noise, you should try Topaz denoise, it can give new life to older cameras like this.
It might be old and lacking in Megapixels, but it still takes a cracking picture.

Found my 330 a few years ago and have found all of the problems you have mentioned. Does do alright in daylight and on the tripod however.
Awesome video. I use olympus legacy glass on mine via an adapter. That's where it shines. I subbed and only use Olympus
I still have an OM1 film camera and lenses, and the E3. But they are not that great in low light.
Nice video 👍🏻

Great video. It's a great outdoor sunny day kind of camera, definitely no good for low light situation.
Absolutely
So if a camera from roughly 2010 cant take good action shots, how did they manage it in the early 80s and 90s???
They pre-focused rather than relying on autofocus like most do today.
