- Freighters are a major part of No Mans Sky and since the release of the latest ECHOES UPDATE we've had a great enhancement to freighter battles including the trench run which seems like it comes straight from Star Wars! There is a lot to learn around Freighters so in this No Man's Sky Beginner Guide I've decided to go over absolutely everything you need to know about the different types of Freighters in the game!
I'll also be going over which upgrades are best to maximise your Freighters stats and I'll be telling you how you can get a FREIGHTER FOR FREE and the FASTEST WAY you can get an S CLASS FREIGHTER!!

I always considered my freighter base my "main" base.
Same. I felt weird building a massive base on a planet in a system I'm just going to warp away from. Only exception would be planet resource farms like Indium that you can go back to. But I guess portaling back to base is also a thing. 🤷♂️
Same. I have not swapped because of past PTSD of my build getting deleted. Does your freighter build transfer if you buy a new one yet?
@@gho5tspartan26yt I've never actually done it but I keep seeing something how it's suppose to be safe as long as you keep atleast 1 item in your freighter inventory when you do.

@@gho5tspartan26ytthat why I always keep backup saves. So many things can mess me up like getting stuck, lost item, crashing, momentary soft glitches like _single event upset_ or out right bugs sometimes. etc.

I just swapped freighters yesterday and everything transferred over perfectly. The rooms and all the storage items were in the exact same place. Didn't lose anything!

For S class Capital Freighter don't go to 3* economy system, but rather Outlaw system. There is a higher chance for spawning S Class Freighter.

@@EraclesK If you have an economy scanner and combat scanner, just click on desired star system. If it is an outlaw system, there will be a skull icon. If you don't have both scanners, you won't be able to identify an outlaw system and you would have to guess.

Pro Tip. The [S] class freighters in Outlaw systems roll high end A class stats. A True S class from a *** economy will always give much high base stats. Pirate [S] is A+ not S. When it comes to to your freighter, you have to dig in for the long haul, the old way.

I used freighter as a secondary base until terrain regenerated at my main planetside base so i now made the freighter my main base while my planetside base is practically underground, being able to jump an entire base around is really awesome and the matter teleporter thing is just S tier

Yeah that’ll happen. If you want an underground base you have to use a natural cave, otherwise the ground will eat up your base every time you reload the terrain. Try putting a Foundation piece down first too, that seemed to help me
Worth mentioning, wandering around a freighter can be extremely glitchy. I’ve become stuck in between walls and on the deck outside the ship entrance multiple times. If this happens to you there is a menu item under options specifically for unsticking yourself in a freighter. I believe it teleports you back to the bridge, but I may be wrong.
Happens to me a lot not to mention that when I makey base to looks like a star destroyer tower the game bug and crash every time I want to change the ship color or fly to another sistem so I have to destroy the base in order to fix the bug because it's not allowing me to build that time of base 😢
Just started playing this game again for the forst time since it came out and a little bit in 2019. What an improvement they've made. I'm glad they didnt give up.
I found a really cool planet that feels like dagobah and there’s a crashed freighter sticking off a cliff with 3 planets next to it and it looks sick

For "capital freighters" there are 5 different ship sprites (vinator, imperial, resurgent, sentinel, battleship and dreadnought) and each one of them have a "fixed" spawn to whatever system you visit after the pirate encounter. Each of the 5 ships also have a chance to spawn with 3 different "extensions" for example; the battleship might look like the dreadnought but the battleship comes with 5 guns and 5 storage containers, while the dreadnought can spawn with 7 guns and 7 storages with an EXTRA 2 storages making the battleship look tiny in comparison. Same goes with the other ships, vinator can spawn with 4 guns, but it can also spawn with 12 guns, making it look huge. So overall from the 5 capital ships they can ALL look different with their extensions. I looked over 120+ systems for the "dreadnought tier 3" then tried over 60+ times to get an S class of for that same ship. It was super tedious, but hella worth it in the end.
For anyone interested, after 5 warps I did a random pirate encounter, seen that it wasn't the ship I wanted and reloaded then checked a different system and so on and so on. Once you find the ship you like, just redo the process with the reload but finish the pirate encounter and check for the class of the ship. If you are looking for S class youll be redoing this for a while since S has a 1-5% to spawn depending on the system (pirate system being the highest at 5%). If it didnt spawn S then reload. Rinse and repeat until you get your shiny S. Good luck!
For anyone who usually plays in 3rd person.. If you find a crashed freighter, switch to 1st person highlight a cargo pod and stand above it.. You will be able to access the cargo without using your terrain manipulator... No digging required.. And for the cargo pods that are still on the freighter just jump on the roof, look down and you will be able to open cargo that way... So much quicker 😃👍

3 weeks ago I just got back into NMS after being hugely disappointed at launch back in 2016. I thought the fights to protect the freighter from pirate fighters were completely random so I took the first one I found. It was a C class but at least it had an economy scanner already. 5 warps later I came across another but with an S class star destroyer style in the color I liked only to find out it would cost me 135 million units I didn't have yet to switch. I've yet to find another of the same class and style but I'm having a blast trying. I just need to improve my starship so I can destroy enemy freighters faster.
Man the S class freighters are super rare, painfully annoying to get these days as well especially as freighter battles are more difficult. Good luck!

I would say the most expensive things in nms is ship storage upgrades. They start at 200,000,000 units and double after every one you buy.
They're free just buy and scrap a class ships
Just scrap high class ships. This gives you a higher chance of obtaining storage augmentations that you can use to get free storage space. Buying ships and then scrapping them, you lose a little money so I guess it's not actually free but you get most of it back when you scrap the ship so at least your spending a few millies for ship storage rather than upwards of hundreds of milies. Or just go into your difficulty settings and make purchases free if you really don't want to deal with it. Up to you what you wanna do.
Missions that you can get from the space station can now reward you with starship upgrade modules. I would argue this to be easier and more reliable than buying ships to scrap, and it doesn't cost anything but gameplay time. If you are lucky you can get missions that stack like feed/kill animals or destroy sentinals.
I started with a b class freighter just to have something I like the design and I’ll be my secondary base mainly for combat while I’m going to build a planet side base as my main base for my fleet
about 2000 hours later im still in a pos C class as i stare blankly into the void of exploration seeking a very specific/rare infested world. pvp group fell apart when infraknifer lost to a cyclotron but i recently got more into ground bases with the wonder projector, projector is fun in freighters.

Just came back after many many years. I didn't know you can postpone your free Freighter till you find one you like so I took the first one. At least it was an A class I guess, really ugly though. Looks like a dead leaves on a branch lol xD time to build up my credits.
I did the same thing on my first save as well then I found my current one and just bought it 👌
I accepted a stinking C class on my latest expedition save. Good thing I enjoy the early game, will probably create a new save again once the expedition done.
The first freighter I got was from the same species as Nada, it really helps out.

I had no idea you could enter a freighter and stop the battle. The freighter to freighter battles ii find it difficult to save the freighter while destroying the other. And i haven't found just starships attacking a freighter after the free one

I’m happy because I had been working my butt off flipping crashed starships for profit, I had started with a C-class freighter but I had ended up finding an S-class shortly thereafter and had the units to buy it.
Good video too, I just wish frigate modules were easier to get.

People will randomly give you stuff. Really good stuff. I got a stack of 10 memories (increase ship/multi tool class by 1) two stacks of 50 AI valves (1.2 billion units) an egg, 5 leviathan companions, a stack of 30 multi tool storage expansions, and two stacks of 30 freighter storage expansions (60 slots).

Living ship storage is the bane of my existence due to requiring 3+star discovery mission with organic frigates and not being guaranteed you'll mostly get an egg soon as I get one I'll cherish it

Is it possible to stumble upon player freighters as you’re out and about? One thing I love is seeing other people’s bases! I want to share my freighter base but I don’t think I can.
It's very rare in the expansive universe, but when you jump to a community event, you tend to run into fleets stationed around the solar system. Most try to steer clear of major paths from planet to the stations/POIs to keep from being in the way of your hyperspeed jumps.
I'm still in Euclid and it's genuinely a rare occurrence outside of events.

The last update add the opotunity to get the Pirate ship after the combat, you ca use the same strategy to farm an S class one, i got one with 4 charced slot in a square position

You can get bulkheads from destryoing fleets in sectors that arent outlawd, its a take a lttle but you can kill a bunch freighter and get S class mods for freighter or 3 bulk heads, tanked my gek reputation, but my freighter never been so op

for anyone looking into this video in 2024, the space battle event happens multiple times and even after taking your first free freighter, you can still get another free one, even after getting a free one the first time. also, everything in terms of "base building" in your freighter (and the frigates around you your freighter) stay with you after purchasing/redeeming a new freighter. the only things you need to watch out for is your storage as everything in your storage before changing freighters will be lost (this counts for the legit freighter storage, no the additional storage boxes that shares your inventory amongst multiple bases)
That is incorrect. If you're playing in Normal, Survival or Permadeath and you already own a freighter, your next one will not be free. Can't speak for Creative mode because I never play it but you can definitely only get a freighter free once.
On the Switch, I've come across two or three freighters that don't do anything or have entrances. They looked like half a ship but there were no broken pieces floating around. After extensive examination, i just assumed it was a Switch glitch, three different times

Not gonna lie, I got lucky with my first free freighter being a B Class with a buttload or storage. I took it without question and now I want to make it my main base.
Personally I still can't stand that I can't put regular refiners, planters and trade terminals in my frigate.
The new rooms they make you use take up space and mess up the simple layout I had for my ship. Not to mention they aren't as efficient. Wish it was an option rather than a requirement.
It's the primary reason my ship went from being home to a workspace I only occasionally visit
13:39 The scanner shows "Captial Ship" despite the video saying its a regular freighter but an actual "Captial Freighter" is huge compared to this. Why are all the freighters showing up as "Capital Freighter" despite being a regular freighter?
On another note, I have been warping into outlaw systems as they have the highest chance of a S class capital freighter after 3 hours of gameplay and 5 warps but I did not get the pirate battle. Is there anything I am doing wrong?
Just destroy the shield orb/ball things, then immediately shoot the walls. Boom.
If you destroy all the shield generators, engines and anti frigate weapons on the pirate dreadnought, it will surrender. Allowing you to aquire a dreadnought in place of a frigate. If you already have a freighter you can also hire any surviving pirates into your fleet

i've been tryna find a solid answer/tutorial about what happens when you trade your freighter for a new one and literally everyone says something different 💀 some ppl have convinced me that everything just gets completely deleted. others say you only get your stuff back if you build the storage containers. and others are saying there's just a transfer base prompt WTF pls why doesn't anyone know for sure

I actually traded mine in for a new one recently and when you trade it in you have to transfer anything in your old freighters actual inventory out because those will get deleted if not but anything you have in an actual storage container that you crafted will get transferred. Hopefully whatever I said made some kinda sense lol

cuz the ppl saying ur inventory gets deleted were probably referring to the inventory that comes with the freighter, while ur storage containers can still keep their stuff but they get transferred over

Bases transfer over when you buy a new freighter. Years ago they did get deleted when you bought a new freighter but now no they do in fact transfer. However you need to store any freighter upgrade modules before you buy a new one if don't do that you'll lose them.
I also played it safe and manually transferred over all the technology too. When I got a new freighter I did not receive the prompt to transfer my base and had to rebuilt it. My 3 storage containers inventory stayed intact when I built new rooms in the new freighter. Playing on Xbox live streaming
@@gordonm.9280 IIRC you need to have at least 1 thing in the freighter's MAIN inventory for the base transfer prompt to appear.
I've just picked up some frigates and sent them out on several expeditions for the first time. Being new to NMS I'm wondering about the frigate consumables. When should you use them, which ones you should use, how many to use, should you use 3 of the same type, are they only important early game until you max out your frigates classes and so on.....
I'm new too, so don't take this like gospel, but in my experience, if you match the "stars" rating of an expedition, you'll mostly succeed and take some damage. If you exceed it, you'll succeed nearly everything and not take damage. So use the consumables to boost stats IF you want to run an expedition but don't have the frigate to meet or exceed the requirement. Normally, just boost the relevant stat of the expedition, the other ones won't really help.
Mostly, I don't bother with them but they could be nice to, say, boost an industrial expedition that would be too hard otherwise since those are the most likely to reward salvaged frigate modules.
@@arthanor9631 Yeah that is basically what I've been doing. Using the consumables that fit the expedition goal and making sure I have more stars than is needed...
@Hellfire666 At first I thought matching would be sufficient, but repairing frigates gets tiresome, even if it's not that expensive. At least it's one system that's pretty straightforward out of everything this game offers! And we don't have to hunt S class frigates or pay a fortune to upgrade them, unlike everything else 👌

@@AlexusDKn as standard I think they have a bigger inventory but you can increase the size of the inventory on any freighter regardless 😊
Anybody know why on the Nintendo switch while trying to buy a new freighter I get a "Transfer Item" warning even when I don't have items or tech left to transfer over during the trade? And when I attempted to buy the different freighter without items to begin with or says "fleet warning" buy I only have one ship and shouldn't it just follow my new freighter?
My freighter is just a three story farm lol one big stellar extractor room and whole floorplans dedicated to farming

One thing some players may not realize is that you can "call" your freighter to the system you are currently in....even if it has no fuel in the hyperdrive!
Not sure how that works logistically, but there it is.

Last time I tried it (pre Echoes) it worked but I think a similar process works for a capital ship so give it a go, shouldn't make any difference on Switch (I think)
Just tried it and it ends the fight and your stuck with the terrible system freighter. ECHOS/patch broke a lot of the useful stuff.
When I try to land during a fight, the capital ship and fight just disappears.
Have you all tried what I suggested in the video? So don't do the 5th warp, create a safe point on the space station in the 4th system by getting in and out of your ship on the space station then warping the 5th time into the battle.. winning it then seeing if it's S class and if not, rinse and repeat?

Just pointing out that since the ECHOES update, when attempting to land (on the ship) during the fight, freighters utterly disappear.

I some how got super lucky and found an S class freighter as my first encounter.
Is only me that the frigther is bugged if i put the teleport , mid range teleport always asked for Power, it's kind a shame i did all my base and than nothing works
there is a bug for me where this battle to get a free one never happens despite me doing the quest and leaving then retuning to my system

Getting the FREE one can take a very long time, but it's definitely worth it if done right. The reloading until you come across a rare superior awesome looking S Class. It's all part of the game really. Loads of effort to get what you want by manipulating the way the game works. Or you could go the financial system crashing route and make yourself a tonne easily with a refiner chain and a small series of unimportant system Space Stations.
Tried to swap mine for a better one and it just keeps popping up transfer items but wont go any further
If I accepted payment after helping the freighter battle their enemies, is that like accepting a ship, and I screwed myself out of the free first freighter?

About 20 hours into my current save, just got the free freighter but it's C class because I didn't know I could get a higher rank. I've made a ton of progress, both personal and narrative wise. I guess I'm just wondering if it's worth it to start all over or if i should just stick it out with my current save and just do unit farming for when I find an S rank.
It's up to you, I'd probably just buy one after 20 hours in as the progression you've made elsewhere will make up for it and making money in the game isn't too difficult 😊

@@animalisticprikalso when you find that s class freighter you like you can trade in your old one to pay less. I wasted my free freighter as well, and also debated starting over. But when I found an s class and traded in my old c class I only had to pay around 5 million units.

@@animalisticprik you're welcome! I think I was a little lucky that my s class had little inventory space. Since that affects the price the most. If I remember correctly the s class was 60 million and I could trade my old one in for 55 mil. I was quite surprised myself.

You can't currently change the class of a freighter. Only way to get a dreadnought would be to exchange and existing freighter or get it new

No you used to have to walk. I think they added that either right when they did the first freighter update with the rooms or shortly after.

We can easily calculate the average number of attempts you'll have to make to find an S-class freighter in each system economy:
★ economy | 0% chance | impossible
★★ economy | 1% chance | 100 attempts on average
★★★ economy | 2% chance | 50 attempts on average
outlaw | 5% chance | 20 attempts on average
@@nickjaycee316 I did say "the *average* number of attempts". I even wrote a Python script to simulate the process and confirm that the math really is that simple for finding the average number of attempts.

I wish they would do a REAL crossover with Star Wars so we can get X wing fighters, tie fighters, mon calamari cruisers and ISD’s. Would be AMAZING

Same, they already take a lot of inspiration from Star Wars such as with some of the ship and freighter designs e.g. the Venator style freighter, they may as well do a partnership and go all in

What's the difference between regular and capital freighters? Apart from the extra storage space.
The Venator and Dreadnaught, the two best looking (in my opinion) are only capital ships

Why do all my freighters look small and bulky compared to these massive star destroyers? Is it just luck to come across these types? I think I'm missing something. I've jumped hundred's of times to different places and they all seem to be the same boring models. How do I get the good looking ones?
You need to: Play NMS for at least 3 hours since logging on, andHave warped with your Starship at least 5 times. Then a battle should appear. After defeating all of the enemies and/or pirate freighter, you can get one of those cool freighters you were talking about.
I wish they would let you have multiple freighter
I declined the offer to take the free freighter twice. But I can’t seem to reproduce the battle after 5 jumps. Nothing happens, even though I was in game for 3 hours. I try to end up in a power generation system every time so the chance of an s class is bigger.
I also did not have that epic freighter battle in your footage, it just looked like it did before. Was I too far away from the freighter? I don’t understand.
You'll get the battle again eventually. The trench run on the freighter should be there assuming you're close enough and have the game updated 😊
@@BunkzGaming hey thanks for responding! I was thinking maybe I missed the battle, because I assumed every time there is a battle it immediately starts. But if I understand correctly from your video, sometimes you have to go towards the freighter in that system to actually start the battle? Or did I misunderstand that?
@@Mopsie my pleasure! And usually when you warp into a system you'll be almost in the middle of a battle. You can just fly in the opposite direction if you don't want to get involved but you should be pretty close as soon as you're in the system

@@Mopsie 5 jumps and 3 in game hours yeah. I assume it's the same for the same play session. You'll keep getting the battles even after you've gotten your first freighter, it just won't be free 😊
He forgot to mention that if you disable the engines and destroy all the guns without destroying the pirate freighter you can get them to surrender and get that as your freighter
Being able to get it as your own is a brand new addition. That update literally came out last week and this video clearly pre dates that..

Is there any guides on every type of farm you need? Not talking about "Get rich" farms like Indium... more like, what farms are essential to making the grind easier.

Building the farms for the stasis device is the best legit way.

You can't, you have to board it. You can see frigates from space though

I am pretty new to the game. I warped to a black hole, saw a freighter and boarded it. It's a capital class B and I bought it for 7m. Why was it so cheap? Am I missing something? There was no fighting or anything. Now I have a capital ship and I have no idea what to do with it
The best capital ships are the S class ones you get from battles and they do cost a lot. The ones you come across just randomly aren't particularly expensive
Ive gotten 2 free freighters in the same save first one was a c class in the very beginning when i was messing around instead of playing the story and just replaced it with another free B class freighter and i havent even got to the point in the story where this is "supposed"to happen for the first time. It might take a while but this is definitely not a one and done scenario it will happen again. Dont make a new save if you have a C class freighter just keep having fun and u will eventually get a better free freighter.
That's just not true. You won't get another free freighter on your save if you already have one, you can only get a free freighter once per save.
