I was raised in from age 9. Left at 18 in 1978. WS disfellowshipped at 19. I am now 66 years old and have never had a conversation with my mother and sister as an adult in almost 50 years. I have been shunned all those years . Lived in the same community and never even sat down as an adult for a cup of tea. That's how bad the shunning policy is. As a JW of some 35+ yrs in Australia though faded past 12 yrs, I personally have NOT witnessed the "anti higher education" brigade though I have occasionally read and seen it discussed in the talks that I dont pay much attention to. In fact I have known some very full on JW practicing families ( where father is elder) where all the children(sons) went into higher education and benefitted from it. My impression was that the JWs promoted the idea that going go uni as a way to get "a job" was "unnecessary" as other pathways like trades etc were sufficient and it is ironical that in Australia, being a tradesman in some areas is now seen as being quite a lucrative career and much better financially than pursuing some university course which attracts a large debt to complete. The issue I see with young people is that once they reach "of age" many go their own way. Some fully leave the JW, others become tokenistic members to appease family. Many feel the JW lifestyle is just too suffocating so they leave, some even going to extremes doing the very opposite to what they were indoctrinated with.
@@ArtVentriss Thank you for detailed comments. See the comments below from Abode who is also JW. I guess the implementation of the JW guidelines on higher education varies in regions!
That must be something only in Australia. In America that is certainly not so. My youngest sister in law jerked her three children out of school and "home schooled" them , they were taught by her and she was a ninth grade dropout so these kids could hardly read and write. My oldest sister in law kept her three in school but didn't place any importance on it so those three were dropouts also. Those kids expressed regret over that.

Dr.K, Are you aware that many youth are leaving the Jehovah's Witnesses organisation because of the governing body decision on Higher or University education? Elders who allow their children to pursue university education are regarded as bad example to the congregation so they are removed as elders. What is strange about this policy is that it is mostly implemented in third world countries such as Ghana whilst kids in USA and Canada attend universities whilst their parents who are elders continue to serve as elders. In view of this, some elders in Africa who can afford to send their children abroad to pursue university education do so because the other elders may not know about it so they continue to serve as elders. I am against this policy about higher education so I sent my children to universities and became a PIMO. If this is the proper food that the governing body is serving Christians then I think Jesus will never approve of their work. The governing body has done away with the Type and Antitype teaching yet they still maintain 1914 teaching which is the main Type and Antitype teaching. Why? Dr. K. please look into this education policy because it is one of the reasons why many young people have no interest in staying in the organisation with their parents. Thank you for your good instructions.
So, if you are an elder in the congregation and your children want to pursue higher education, you can no longer serve as an elder? Will the baptized children be removed from the congregation if they go to college ?
I attended college and became a Chemist and gave me a good , stable life. College will give you a good perspective in life. It gave me happy and. Smart family.
@@manny2032 I agree with you. But the WT wants that young labor force. The only way they can get it is if they are not in college. Some youths actually learned really good skills working for the WT that they applied later on in their lives. So, it can be beneficial to some. College education is a personal choice and the organization is only making suggestions not to pursue highrer education and not presenting it as a reaquirement. I don't think it's a sin to go to college.
That move of depriving young members for higher education to favor labor help for the organization is selfish, cruel and unfair to the young members for better future. I hope it’s not too late for young members to see and explore the other side of the “fence”
Here in Lisbon one of my brother in law is the coordinator of the congregation and both his children went to University and he is still an Elder/Coordinator. I guess that this depends on the country. Just guessing
It's everywhere, the very elders reading to the cong not to attain university education is the very ones sending their wards to uni. This is hypocritical nature of a witness
The Jehovah's Witnesses congregations are rife with hypocrisy and double standards, this is the culture. The "Elder's" family members tend to get special preferred treatment when it comes to crimes, sin, wrong doing, or improper conduct. The same culture dictates that the single mothers, or wives with "unbelievabling mates" and their children don't receive these accomodations for misconduct.

So sorry for such an ugly, unchristian treatment. Where is the love, forgiveness, Christian understanding extended to a family? That I think this is out from the teachings of Christ. Down with this type of religious belief!!!!
Words, words and only words. The Watchtower Organization can disappear, become extinct, go up in smoke if you want, but Jehovah's Witnesses never, because when a true Christian knows the truth, he is free from the deceptions that Christianity teaches, it is written: "and they will know the truth, and the truth will set them free.” John 8:33.
JW will never quite be gone, but it will become irrelevant and little like the adventists. There are zero progress and decline in every place in the world except for certain African countries.
either way it's just good to see it decline so much as it's taken a toll on the lives of so many individuals and families and also the many that have died believing their doctrine remaining in their sin so that they will endure eternal punishment (John 8:24)
