Yes.... I read Michael McDonald's book recently. Very interesting & enjoyable read. Guess I have a bit of a unique perspective growing up here in St. Louis, MO. I remember seeing him play in a band called the 'Younger Brothers' at a high school dance. Though I was just a kid, I was an emerging musician at the time. I remember thinking a couple of things: This band can play any song and play it well! ... and, that one guy has a really unusual voice & sounds great! Today... many years later I perform in a cover band with my two sons-- mostly wineries and corporate events. Priceless! A shout out to you, Pierre! Your lessons and tutorials are helping me go to the next level with my playing and performances. Thank you! 😎🎹👍
You opened with the actual piece and top-down view of the hands, which got you my subscription. Didn't really need more than the first 10 seconds of the video to get it. Wish more people did that.
Awesome. I do that when possible-- sometimes the YT copyright algorithm will strike me down if I play the whole song up front. It's unpredictable. Worst case scenario, I will teach section by section in certain videos.
Guitar player here, but I still watched intently. ❤ Mike's keyboard playing is so underrated, not to mention he's also singing so masterfully over top of it.
Happy New Year Pierre. Lucky man getting Michael McDonald’s book for Xmas. I read it a couple of months back. I thought it was a great read. One of my favourite musicians.
Just came across this channel. Very nice! I Gave up piano very early as a kid, was not very talented playing Violine later. Today I would for sure make use of such greatly done tutorials, thanks for the effort! Needle to say I very much love this song ❤
Best piano tutorial on RUclips, so detailed. Love Michael mcdonald, his playing is so groovy between the left and right hand, can you do Love lies from him ?
Spectacular tutorial! Now I'll have to get my casino PSR 1500 out of my garage! 😂 For about 5 years McD's unique keyboard style was heard all over the radio.
Hell yes Pierre! Keep the great Rhodes stuff coming! Hope you got to see the "Yacht" Dockumentary on Max. MM, Kenny Loggins, Luke and the Toto guys were the stars. I've been playing this song and for the life of me could never quite figure out what he was doing with the right hand 1-4 moves on the verse. Just now having learned Rikki Don't Lose That Number it makes sense now that it was a flick of the 9! So many great right hand embellishment techniques from this and Rikki definitely upgraded my playing!!!! Thank you so much! The other one that this opened up was "Heart to Heart" as it has all those great moves too!
Happy 2025!!! I gotta say that I do not come here to learn, I'm too lazy to be honest, but I really love the tracks you choose. And this one is so mesmerizing. Of course being a Jeff Porcaro addict, I got to discover Michael because of Jeff on drums in this song...
Since you’re into great blue eyed soul bangers - why not pick a tune from the great Bobby Caldwell? Carry on? What you won’t do for love? Et cetera… Greetings from Stockholm 😍
Great video as usual and excellent Rhodes sound on your digital piano. You should have used your Rhodes though! At 19:58 you play Ab diminished 7th but on the record to me it sounds more like an Ab half diminished (or Abm7/5b). Basically, instead of F you play F#, which is also the melody at that point in the song.
Thanks great vid! I'm curious about the software you use for the music staff in the top right corner, it seems that using that real-time visualisation might help a bit with learning to sightread.
That's a great Rhodes sample. Really gets the overtones on the low notes. What is it? Of course the other question is why is there an unused Rhodes in the background for this song? 😅
Great tutorial! Nuances I didn't know. For me in the bridge, I always felt like the last 2 measures were played in 3/4 time, like his lyrics are "Don't (1) Say (2) That (3) like it switches to 3/4 time for 2 or 3 measues. Listening now i'm confusing myself more!
The lyric "don't" is beat 2, so you might be hearing it displaced by one beat. There is a big downbeat right before the word "don't." Listen carefully and you'll hear it :)
@@pierrejpiscitelli yes, I guess I was missing that beat. I guess as the drummer it's like and extra 2/4 measure as you said. When I would play it my band I think I would do the chords with the words, so I guess was thinking of it as 3 bars of 3/4 after that down beat, if that makes any sense!! But maybe me ignoring that 1 was why it wouldn't work when I played against the record haha! I think I also had some of the passing chords different, like in the verse I think I played a Cdim instead of your G#dim7 (I think because I was listening to patti labelle's cover version?)
Thank you for this one Pierre! ❤. Btw, how are you liking his book so far? Excellent read and a few surprises. Is it me or does he tend to write in G/Em a lot? I wonder if that’s where his voice/timber naturally resonates in that key. Last question, what are your thoughts on “That’s Why” off the same album? Love your channel Pierre!
I haven't had time to start it yet 🤣. He seems to write in a lot of keys, I haven't really seen much of a pattern but yeah his voice is great in this range! I absolutely love the entire album.
Happy New Year , Lots bof health for you and close Ones. Another great tutorial, Pierre! Wishing my voice timbre matched Michael’s.

Jeff Porcaro on drums. One of his finest.

Good stuff.
Could you do Lowdown by Boz Skaggs?
Yes! Please!

I need to go digital because then I can trigger the software that displays illuminated keys, staff notes, etc. That's what makes the tutorial!
@ yeah, I figured it right after I typed the message 😁
Nice. Well done
Holding Back The Years by Simply Red please!! 🥰🥰
Thanks great vid! I'm curious about the software you use for the music staff in the top right corner, it seems that using that real-time visualisation might help a bit with learning to sightread.
I use Chordie. It's great!
Finally ❤

Always nice to have MM's tunes broken down so methodically. Now then, how about 'I Can Let Go Now'?... go on, you know you want to... 😅
4:36 inverting first intro chords with variation

Read it via audio book
yes…its a good read…some surprising revelations by him…
Wurly or Rhodes? I'm hearing Wurly
100% Rhodes, with a nice chorus effect :)
OK so now I’ve heard you say PISKitelli and now PISHitelli 😂 which is it Lol
The "K" is wrong, but I say it that way sometimes to give people a fighting chance at spelling, or even understanding my last name 🤣
Happy New Year , Lots bof health for you and close Ones.
