SRV is the GOAT❤ he picked up a toy guitar as a child, didn’t read music. This was in 1989 and in August’90 he was in a helicopter crash and died at the age of 35. Eric Clapton said ‘When people who don’t play heard Stevie they thought hey I’m going to learn too… while people who played guitar after listening to Stevie thought they should throw out their guitar.”
Stevie Ray Vaughan is hands down one of the greatest guitar players of all time. He was like a hurricane to watch. Guys like Clapton and Slash can’t even touch his greatness.
Voodoo Child is a Jimi Hendrix song. Stevie Ray was a big fan of Hendrix. He wouldn’t play any Hendrix songs until he got permission from the Hendrix family in person. The family was so moved by his presentation the gave Stevie Ray a present. They gave him Jimi Hendrix’s pedal board. So the video is Stevie Ray playing a song written by Hendrix and using Hendrix’s peddle board.
This was recorded in 1989, what a legendary blues guitarist and singer Stevie Ray Vaughan was, this rendition of Voodoo Child is amazing. It's so sad to think that SRV tragically died in a helicopter crash in August 1990, at the age of 35. We are very lucky to have live videos on yt of his various performances including the wonderful Texas Flood (Live at the El Mocambo) 1983, so we can continue to enjoy this man's incredible legacy. Really enjoyed your reaction, Anthony and Black Pegasus. 👍😊
SRV is the greatest. I saw him 5 times. Was lucky to get to meet him backstage where he signed my ticket “SRV” and still have it hanging on my wall. He died August 27, 1990 in a helicopter crash. I was driving home from my first day in 2nd year law school. Listening to the radio, I heard it was confirmed he was killed. I pulled over immediately and started crying. I was destroyed. He has always been my favorite.
I was 16 when he died. And I was also driving when I heard the news on the radio. I still remember exactly what stoplight in my hone town I was sitting at, and I was crushed. I remember turning my headlights on and even tho I was almost home, I just kept driving around, listening to SRV’s music that one of the Houston rock stations (101 KLOL or 97 Rocks) was playing that day… Nearly a decade later, I was driving home from work and the radio station was doing a Gone Before Their Time tribute, playing songs by artists who had passed way too young…the 27 club members, etc. And as I drove, I was contemplating life, the fact I was getting married in just a couple months…thinking about a buddy who was in the hospital after an accident he had on campus filming something for a class…then SRV came on the radio. Life By the Drop… as the intro played, I had the strangest feeling rush over me…I got chills and every hair on my body stood straight up and I felt sad all of a sudden…like something was missing. I thought that maybe I was having an emotional reaction going back to that day that SRV died… I had just gotten my first cell phone days before. And I’d stopped and bought some beer. It was a very long drive home. ; ). But I’d called my fiancé and I was telling her something I was thinking about wedding crap and I made a joke about how my buddy who was in the hospital may have to be in a damn wheelchair in the wedding party or something…. And she very bluntly and unsympathetically just blurted out that my buddy had just died in the hospital. One of our friends was there and had called her right after.. That night, I was sitting in the back of my truck, parked in the middle of the pasture in front of the house…drunk by then and I called my father. He was very familiar with losing friends (multiple combat tour Vietnam vet)…. I remember him telling me…that I just have to hold onto good stuff and not feel sad for my own selfish reasons for wishing my friend was still here. And to try to experience and achieve as much as I can in life because I was experiencing and achieving for him too…and my pops said “if you were close, he’ll let you know he’s ok…”. And again here comes the chills and goosebumps and hairs standing on end… I knew right then. And I found out later that just a few minutes after I left the office, long enough to hear the DJ who had started talking just as I was pulling out of work about the tribute thing they were playing and right at that time was the time that he passed…just as Life By the Drop came on the radio…. It all made sense. It wasn’t the last time I’d experience something like that…someone close “letting me know they were ok”. Sorry for rambling on. I didn’t intend to go on after my memory if the day Stevie was killed. But the memory of the rest kinda took over my focus first a bit. My bad.
Love this. The three that died in a plane crash that Waylon Jennings knew were Richie Valens, Buddy Holly and Big Bopper. That crash was referred to as "the day the music died." Waylon Jennings was the 4th but there wasn't enough room for him in the plane. ❤
The whammy bar is on the guitar. The wah-wah pedal is on the floor. Legend has it that it's the original Hendrix Pedal. The bassist and drummers are legends too. SRV is the GOAT. Who else could take the messy but genius buffet of a Hendrix composition and make it musically coherent? He was the Hendrix Whisperer.
I saw him a number of times in Austin. Once, at an outdoor venue, it started raining. Not only was Stevie there with his band, Double Trouble, but his brother Jimmy was there with his band The Fabulous Thunderbirds. Anyway, they had to stop playing because of the rain. Everyone stood there for 45 minutes, until it cleared enough for the bands to start playing again. I didn't see anyone leave.
Stevie plays his guitar behind his back as fluidly as he plays it in front! It's quite a spectacular feat and can be seen in the "Texas Flood (Live at the El Mocambo) video. Link is here: ruclips.net/video/KC5H9P4F5Uk/видео.htmlsi=dVXe7JjqbcCTlU4F
Stevie is a unicorn. He plays like he's one with the guitar! No one guitarist can ever be number one because it's personal taste. SRV is one of the goats!
The greatest guitarists can satisfy anyone's personal taste. Stevie could do that. He could play what you wanted the way you wanted and that's what made him THE GOAT.
It's really impossible to say who was the greatest of all time. It really all comes down to personal preference. Now you can't deny innovators like Jimi Hendrix Eddie Van Halen, Les Paul, BB King and so many more that just completely changed guitar play. To me Stevie Ray Vaughan was the best at what he did. Texas Blues was his thing. To have respect from somebody like Albert King that hated everybody, Says-A-Lot. He's by far my favorite guitarists cuz he's stuck to his roots and he stayed with it the whole time he was alive.
Stevie always gonna be an enigma cause many more mainstream artists couldn't cater a show so specifically highlighting what ever they want this is a Stevie Ray Vaughan show and everybody there is on board with that
The significant difference between SRV and the other great guitarists you mentioned is that they were rock guitarists, whereas, SRV was a blues guitarist first. Admittedly, some songs (like this one) are blues/rock fusion.
"I cant even appreciate how dope he is." That is the best description I have ever heard of SRV, Mr. Pegasus thanks for that. I first heard him in 1984 and it changed my life.
SRV, Gilmore, Clapton, Page, Van Halen, Frampton, Hendrix...my brain just exploded trying to make the list of top classic rock guitarists.... so many more!
Fun Fact: In 1969, Vaughan's group opened for The Jimi Hendrix Experience in Fort Worth, Texas. It was at this show that Vaughan lent Jimi Hendrix his Vox Wah-wah pedal which Hendrix ended up breaking. In return, Hendrix gave Vaughan his own touring Wah-wah pedal.
People say differently, but I've been listening to him for decades (so I know), he is--absolutely--free flowing. He never, unless he was playing with another band other than his own or when recording, played a song the same way twice. This also makes some of his performances way better than others.
When you hear those bends you must realize that Stevie Ray used .013 - .015 - .019 - .028 - .038 - .058 gauge strings. Most people use .008 high E strings.
I saw j=him many times in late 70s and early 80s when I lived in Dallas. he played a lot with his brothers band jimmy vaughn and the thunderbirds. he played a lot of Hendrix songs and he is by far one of the best if not the best there ever was. RIP Stevie
The doppler effect thing he does twice at the beginning of the song, is done by bending the note he is playing and slowly bring it back to the original note while rocking a whammy pedal back and forth.
To me, the thing about Stevie's playing is his rhythm and timing. Flashy lead guitarists abound, but SRV's got that shit on lockdown. As incredible as Double Trouble are, take them away, and everything would be right on the money. Dude was bananas. It's another Jimi cover, but his instrumental rendition of Little Wing is PHENOMENAL.
At his last concert, Eric Clapton had to follow him on stage after Stevie's set, and he asked, "How the hell do you follow that?" When Legends are in awe, you know you are good.
He is always “in the pocket”. No matter what path he goes down, he is ALWAYS in the pocket. He’s amazing at that. And Waylon Jennings was a member of the Crickets (Buddy Holly’s group) and flipped a coin to see who could go on the plane out of Clear Lake, IA since their tour bus’ heater was broken and it was February (in Iowa) and the Big Bopper was sick. He (Waylon) had said after losing the coin flip ‘well I hope your plane crashes’ (paraphrased) and carried that guilt with him for years. He ended up being one of the original “outlaw” country artists.
I'd say, Texas Flood (Live at the El Mocambo). Then you need to check out Roy Clark. I haven't found the recording of him playing guitar with his feet. Maybe someone else can help out.
Interesting side note: Stevie's older brother, Jimmy Vaughan played in a band called The Chessmen, which opened for Jimi Hendrix several times. Also, it wasn't uncommon to see musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and Janis Joplin at the Vaughan family house in Oak Cliff, TX. I've had the privilege of visiting with their mom, Martha Vaughan twice and got to see all kinds of photos of their family and famous visitors. Really cool!!&!
It's subjective who was the best guitarist depending on what style of music you're into but I certainly have not heard anyone who I vibe with more than Stevie Ray.
Gotta check out Lenny (live @ the El Mocambo), Little Wing (also @ the El Mocambo) or Life Without You (live @ the Capitol Theatre). I've been watching reaction videos of every genre for maybe 5 years now, and SRV is always my favorite rabbit hole people go down. He never plays the same thing twice.. the dude was as intertwined with his instrument as it gets.
From an old-school guy, 65, who played in teenage bands in the '70's - In terms of lead guitarists, it's great to think of them the same as thinking of who's the best among rappers. Rather than who's THE best, it's more like, 'who's the best at doing what' type of deal. Otherwise it's into subjective apples and oranges. Kind of like Jordan vs Bird vs The Professor. Jose Feliciano does things on guitar that most rock guys don't/can't do. SRV's the best at what he does. Johnny Winter is too. EVH is too. Robin Trower and Roy Clark and...are too...
Stevie is my favorite guitarist to watch/listen to but, I think that Roy Clark may be the best "player" I've ever seen . . . . . Try "Twelfth Street Rag". Lot's of people are gonna tell you to watch "Malaguena" but, for me, it's "Twelfth Street Rag". . . . .
According to the rolling stone top 100 gutairests he ranked like 14th which is absurd he's definitely a top 5 all time player to me he's 3rd after jimi, and Eddie, the him, page,
What people didn't realize the shredders on his guitar. We're thirteen gauge Most guitar players only play with about a nine gauge shredders. Watch him twist the strings. The way he does this made his sound was so unique.I grew up listening SRV when we lost him I cried because that means I didn't get to listen to his new music.
SRV used a few effects pedals...most often Tubescreamer distortion pedals..he used 2, one set at a low gain, the other at high...used, of course the Vox Wah pedal. he also used a chorus effects pedal. He had a couple of other tube-boxes and an Octavia fuzz pedal - pretty sure, tho, that sound came out of his soul..the effects pedals were just to explain to us how SRV was able to breathe out those sounds like he did.
everyone raves about stevie, and rightfully so, but double trouble , chris on drums, tommy on bass, those two are no slouches either, i consider them, at what they are doing, are every bit as good as stevie doing what he does, which is why they ARE double trouble, give it up for them too,,,,,,,,,,just sayin. the whammy bar is not a noise gate, it stretches the strings, stevie has a whammy bar from a left handed guitar mounted on his right handed guitar because where the bar is,, its where the pressure to stretch the strings is applied to the lower strings, instead of pressure beginning on the high strings side, more than likely because of how hard he plays, he goes through strings like a chain smoker, he uses a lower tuning a half step i believe, so he can stretch the hell out of the strings easier, better, faster, and further, and he uses heavier strings, cant remember the gauges off hand, but there again, cause he plays hard, breaks a lot of strings, and a fatter sound,, the man was just a natural beast..........
TOP 1...! BEST OF THE BEST. NO REPETITION EVER, unless he intentionally did it. The music FLOWING from his soul was water RUSHING over Niagara Falls... PURE and UNMATCHED.
I think it’s a wah pedal The Sammy is the bar attached the the saddle if the guitar. You should put P in front of Ozzy Revelations (Mother Earth) off the Randy Rhodes (one of the great guitarist) tribute
I've seen this hundreds of times. Not only reactions but back in the day, I had figured out a way to record it to cassette tape for the car. Those bends between 11:00-11:06 is some of the nastiest ever!
I was lucky enough to see him open up for Robert Plant in 88 in Toronto and he literally seduced me with his guitar and then he sang...smooth as butter. Little sister with Jeff Healey is a must my friend. Before he recorded this he asked Jimi Hendrix parents for permission out of respect and they were delighted and gave SRV Jimi's foot pedal. Great reaction and Peace out ✌️ ☮️ 🙏
It's not like running a 100 meter race where there is a definitive winner. There is no 'best' guitar players. There's who you personally like and who you don't. Like Frank Zappa once said, 'if it sounds good to you it's bitchin', 'if it sounds bad to you it sucks'. I like Stevie, I think he's one of the best in the style he plays.
No one speaks to my heart and soul like SRV does. He is definitely my all time favorite ❤. And I agree w checking out Texas Flood live from the El Macombo or Ain’t Gone And Give Up On Love live from the Capitol Theater.
He is the Best,34 years after his Death,People are putting Him in the top five best ever.Me I’m a Stevie Fan,and Zack Wilder.they are 1 +2. Listen to No More Tears,Ozzy
I remember the helicopter crash that took his life and all those on that chopper. I was sitting in that general vicinity the week before for the Billy Joel concert at that same venue. It was a sad moment in music history.
I think the majority would put Jimi at #1 simply because he was so innovative; ahead of his time. Like the Beatles. But it's entirely subjective; I think David Gilmour is not high enough on most lists. When you talk about the top 20 or so you can make a cogent argument for each and every one. Definitely check out Texas Flood live at the El Mocambo. It shows both his guitar and vocal skills even more than this one.
Stevie Ray Vaughan was the baddest mother effer to ever pick up a guitar I've seen many many guitar players including Stevie Ray many times between him and Gary Moore those are my top two
Srv king of the hill the goat of hot texas blues. The tremolo bar on the guitar bends pitch, the pedal is a wahwah pedal which mods tones as he sweeps it back and forth.
Have you done blue on black yet? Stevie Ray Vaughan is from Dallas. He retired and died Wisconsin in a helicopter crash at 35. There are some videos out there where he’s playing guitar behind his back and still killing it.
Clapton is a rascist scumbag

So the video is Stevie Ray playing a song written by Hendrix and using Hendrix’s peddle board.
The story about Hendrix's dad giving Stevie Jimi's wah-wah pedal is apocryphal. Didn't really happen. But it's a great story.
Jimi used pedals in the VERY early days of pedals even existing....back then they just put them on the floor.
"Pedalboards" didn't really exist.
He’s the GOAT for me. RIP Stevie. There hasn’t been another one close to you.
I agree we hired them in 74 for a Xmas party cost 150 dollars can you imagine😅😅

His song couldn't stand the weather on live from Austin is incredible. When he gets to the solo he's channeling so hard it looks like it hurts.
From deep in his soul!
Stevie Ray Vaughan started in 1983 he died in 1990 he is the number one guitar player of all time nobody will ever touch him
The bass player is Tommy Shannon who played with Johnny Winter, the drummer is Chris Layton.
Stevie is top on my list. The wah wah pedal was gifted to him by Hendrix family. "Tin Pan Alley" with Johnny Copeland is a must. RIP SRV❤

According to the rolling stone top 100 gutairests he ranked like 14th which is absurd he's definitely a top 5 all time player to me he's 3rd after jimi, and Eddie, the him, page,
SRV is the bomb. His back up band, Double Trouble, is also the bomb.
Was lucky enough to see him half dozen times. Last time he was with Jeff Beck at MSG. effin helicopter took him 8 months later. RIP
Texas Flood at El Mocambo.
goat. Save "Texas Flood" at the El Macambo until you've got some SRV under your belt. RIP SRV.
Love this song; Jimmy Hendrix performed this song too
I saw Stevie Ray in the mid 80s. A great guitarist. Such a shame when he passed.
Stevie Ray Vaughn is the greatest guitarist ever. In my opinion.
"LIFE WITHOUT YOU" LIVE !! At the Capitol Theatre.
Stevie Ray is the goat of blues rock he is a protege of muddy Waters He is a straight up and blues guy.
SRV died in a helicopter crash. I was devastated. RIP Stevie Ray 💔🥀
He played with 13ga strings so thick his hand strength was unreal!
everyone raves about stevie, and rightfully so, but double trouble , chris on drums, tommy on bass, those two are no slouches either, i consider them, at what they are doing, are every bit as good as stevie doing what he does, which is why they ARE double trouble, give it up for them too,,,,,,,,,,just sayin. the whammy bar is not a noise gate, it stretches the strings, stevie has a whammy bar from a left handed guitar mounted on his right handed guitar because where the bar is,, its where the pressure to stretch the strings is applied to the lower strings, instead of pressure beginning on the high strings side, more than likely because of how hard he plays, he goes through strings like a chain smoker, he uses a lower tuning a half step i believe, so he can stretch the hell out of the strings easier, better, faster, and further, and he uses heavier strings, cant remember the gauges off hand, but there again, cause he plays hard, breaks a lot of strings, and a fatter sound,, the man was just a natural beast..........
TOP 1...! BEST OF THE BEST. NO REPETITION EVER, unless he intentionally did it. The music FLOWING from his soul was water RUSHING over Niagara Falls... PURE and UNMATCHED.
Watch the whole ACL video and the Live at the El Mocambo video. You'll be glad you did. GOAT!!!
Mary Had a Little Lamb
I think it’s a wah pedal The Sammy is the bar attached the the saddle if the guitar. You should put P in front of Ozzy Revelations (Mother Earth) off the Randy Rhodes (one of the great guitarist) tribute
Wamny
I've seen this hundreds of times. Not only reactions but back in the day, I had figured out a way to record it to cassette tape for the car. Those bends between 11:00-11:06 is some of the nastiest ever!
Fun fact: SRV used 14g strings whereas most guitarists use 9-11g. And also hoods dumble amp he used was purchased by John Mayer
Great reaction and Peace out ✌️ ☮️ 🙏
Life without you, at capital theatre. Totally awesome
As a young guitar player I had to learn this as a rite of passage
It was practically a law
I remember the helicopter crash that took his life and all those on that chopper. I was sitting in that general vicinity the week before for the Billy Joel concert at that same venue. It was a sad moment in music history.
You need to put your friend in front of SRV's Texas Flood live at the El Macambo. Stevie is my all-time GOAT!
Jimi was the Revolution and SRV was the Evolution. BOTH GOATS
Waylon Jennings gave up his seat on the plane on the Buddy Holly tour which saved his life.
Agree, SRV was insanely talented but Jimi was in a class of his own.
Stevie is and always will be the GOAT
Stevie Ray Vaughan was the baddest mother effer to ever pick up a guitar I've seen many many guitar players including Stevie Ray many times between him and Gary Moore those are my top two
Texas Flood live at the macambo
Watch
,Life without You,Texas flood, and after You played them I will send You more.
Srv king of the hill the goat of hot texas blues. The tremolo bar on the guitar bends pitch, the pedal is a wahwah pedal which mods tones as he sweeps it back and forth.
SRV top 5 in so many ways! He played with BB King and died too soon. RIP Stevie! ❤❤❤
that's the guitar Hendrix set on fire on stage in Monterey CA festival,
Have you done blue on black yet? Stevie Ray Vaughan is from Dallas. He retired and died Wisconsin in a helicopter crash at 35. There are some videos out there where he’s playing guitar behind his back and still killing it.
