It is very brave to actually try to make a cover of this song. Many have tried and failed. SRV did not simply try, he pulled it off with the flag flying high. The only other guitarist I know of that has made this song justice is a Norwegian guitarist, Vidar Busk.
Jimi died in 1969 when SRV was 15. But Jimi was Stevie’s favourite artist ever. He even helped Jimi’s family remaster Jimi’s collection with all proceeds going to Hendrix’s Dad and family ❤
I was devastated when SRV died in 1990 when I was 20. The only celebrity death that has ever upset me more was Jim Henson (The Muppets and Sesame Street) earlier that year. Even more tragically, Stevie had recently become a public advocate for sobriety after quitting alcohol and drugs, which nearly killed him. The musician John Mayer has said he never did drugs because of Stevie.
I was in a kid when it happened but my parents played his music and I recall the day of that crash very well. 😭 Isn’t it ironic when people cleanup their lives and then die shortly after..
Remember that day well. I was out all night and got to sleep like 5:00a.m. I woke up at about 1:00 p.m. .walked into the kitchen and there was a note from my cousin to her mom (my aunt) and it said "Eric is O.K. but SRV died". and I felt like someone punched me in the gut, then ANGER! Fuck Clapton he had his legacy and I hate him anyhow. That should have been Eric Clapton and not Stevie, who I just saw for the first time sober, and he was better than he was doin coke and boozin. I felt like smashing a guitar for a quick second then just sat down and teared up. What a loss. Fly on Stevie wherever you are now, I miss you brother.
I saw SRV twice. Art director I worked with went with me both times. He was drinking beer, I was not. I never have consessions at a concert or movie so that I don't need a bathroom break. I'd rather be starving with a dry mouth. Both concerts the ADir had to use the bathroom. Both times that was when SRV played the axe behind his back. One of the concerts was the Jeff Beck and SRV tour. They did Stevie Wonder's Supersticious together.
Stevie made that sound you asked “how did he do that without touching the guitar” by stepping on a foot pedal (sometimes called a wawa pedal) that actually once belonged to Jimi Hendrix. It was given to him by the Hendrix family after Jimi died.
This was Hendrix's song that SRV played very well. sometimes he was playing with just his left hand. Other times he was messing with foot pedals. He was like Kobe with a guitar and they died the same way.

Jimi being psychedelic blues/rock and Stevie playing more Texas blues. Jimi was the innovator/master of the wah-wah peddle and adding the sound of distortion to music. Stevie was a master because he knew how to harness and clean up that same sound w/o loosing any of its originality. Stevie taught himself how to play guitar by ear at the age of 7. Unfortunately, we lost both men at very early ages. Jimi, first, at the age of 27, in London 1970. you will see guitarists stomp their effects rigs, often. effects pedals are devices used to distort the sound of the instrument in various ways. my personal favorite is a bass played through a wah pedal. so funky.
I normally do like cover tunes but there are some that do justice and there are a few that are even better and Jimmy is one of the best there is but i feel SRV blew this out of the water and for good reason that he loved Jimmy's music and wanted to make him proud 😉
