I got a very rare hitchhiker, a longspine urchin! Found it at night a few months ago on my zoanthid rock, now it’s a permanent resident. A freebie urchin :)
I got a bunch of critters called Chiton on my live rock. I was very concerned at first, but once i was able to identify them i learned they are harmless and eat alage. I usually notice them at night after the lights are out. Great video Jeff!
Just got some new hermits in and one of them came with a great big barnacle on his shell, which is definitely the most exciting hitchhiker I've recieved
The mini-brittle stars are really cool hitchhikers, and great clean up crew! I started with dry rock, and I wish I had some of these good hitchhikers in my tank
The timing of this is perfect for me...have had my pico up and running for about two months now with nothing in it and am going to go pick up some live rock within the next few days. My favourite hitchhiker from previous tanks are the little nudibranch you sometimes get. I think if I got a smaller species of mantis shrimp, I'd probably keep it...I just recently found out there are species that stay really small and won't smash your tank...they will still kill everything though.
I’ve scored some stomatellas before and those dudes are awesome. Bad ones I’ve gotten were the sundial snails they killed all my Zoas until I figured out what they were. Nice vid!!
I scored some good hitchhikers on my rock but also some bad ones. Can you do a video on the bad hitchhikers cause I had a time trying to find out what was bad and good. Thanks man keep them coming.
had a baby trochus snail in my new tank, he was on the glass for a few days and then disappeared. i’m hoping it’s hiding in my rocks somewhere and not dead
I miss real live rock. The amount of cool stuff that showed up attached and would pop out was crazy. Sponges, copepods, worms. This stuff we have nowdays needs to be called dead rock
Agree, i've got a few they're commonly called electric blue hermits, yours looks like some kind of hybrid! Great hermits but they can be bulldozers and like the odd snail for lunch, unless mine is french.
I think live rock is underrated, especially considering the benefits. With dry rock you will receive dead, white or colored rock; although it can look just as pretty. The real benefit of live rock is the diverse bacterial colonies you receive and it can stabilize and speed your tank maturation. I have received a great free cleanup crew as well. Small beneficial snails, a breeding colony of limpets, oysters that filter particulate, cup corals, spaghetti worms/ bristle worms, a bumblebee snail, ornamental algae, filtering sponges, and tunicates. All which help me to run no filter and test 0 nitrate. As for the negatives... I have a 10 gallon with a lime green mantis shrimp... he’s cool though. A little live rock with your dry rock will really help create a stable ecosystem.
Yes! Asterina stars. F those things. I had an explosion of them. Easily 300+ in only a few months. They ate all my new zoas I got. I got a harlequin shrimp and it is helping a lot. I’ll just have to donate it to my LFS after it’s finished with them.
I hate to be "That Guy" but please stop using boughten as the past tense of the verb to buy. The proper past tense of to buy is bought. It should be "I bought a cookie" not "I had boughten a cookie". Boughten is an archaic adjectival form of the verb to buy and it signifies something that was purchased as opposed to something made at home. I realize that I'm going to be criticized for bringing this to your attention, but your videos are really great and the information is very helpful..... However, the repeated use of boughten will tend to undermine your credibility as a trustworthy source of reliable information. Please forgive me if this comes across as patronizing or condescending... I assure you that it is neither. Thanks
That's the first thing I did when I set up a 50 gallon was got a bunch of them bottles of the isopods and put them in there and let them go for a month before I put the mandarins in there not a big goby person put these fish for two beautiful to pass up I had to put a tank with them in it

That's a blue eyed hermit crab (Calcinus gaimardii, or Calcinus laevimanus ). I have one and love it.
Sometimes called a blue knuckle hermit also. Some large males can be destructive to tentacles

That is awesome!
I ended up getting an emerald crab from my first live rock he lived through my cycling phase I felt so bad. He’s still going strong to this day
Just got some new hermits in and one of them came with a great big barnacle on his shell, which is definitely the most exciting hitchhiker I've recieved

Don't we all. Thanks for watching!
My life rock is covered in zoas, that made creating my nano really easy
@Arjun Everett I think it’s fishy if you go to that website, you might prob get virus cuz I saw that EXACT comment reply in another video.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing.
Please do a Top 10 Fish for 55 gallon reef tank! Not many videos on RUclips that I could find discussing this topic.
Feather dusters are definitely number 1 for me, my favorite hitchhikers were bivalves and corynactis.
Yes. Great add-on
I’ve scored some stomatellas before and those dudes are awesome. Bad ones I’ve gotten were the sundial snails they killed all my Zoas until I figured out what they were. Nice vid!!
Thats sucks!
Curious as to the hermit crab @ 7:00 also.
I have 5 or 6 of em
Do you!? They are great and I would love to have more of them.
@@MadHattersReef calcinus laevimanus, maybe? i had one before too.
@@MadHattersReef Calcinus laevimanus I believe.
That was a good and easily understandable tutorial for beginners keep it up
Nice video my man! Very informative
Glad you liked it!
Awesome video I’ve followed for a while now....... hey from the uk ;)
Awesome! Thank you!
my live rock came with an elephant snail! i love him, his name is Dart and he is nocturnal and lives on my live rock.
That’s awesome
How do you prevent small hitchhikers from getting sucked up in the filter? Especially with a WaveMaker.
Pre filter- basically a filter sponge that goes over the wave maker or filter inlet
I scored some good hitchhikers on my rock but also some bad ones. Can you do a video on the bad hitchhikers cause I had a time trying to find out what was bad and good. Thanks man keep them coming.
This was kinda a mix bag but Ill write it down for a future video topic.
New subscriber from Chicago. Setting up two salt water tanks this summer💛💛💛💛💛💛💛
Thanks for subbing
Almost every fish at LiveAquaria, "Email me when available".
Surprised not to see bristle worms on there, great vid tho bud, keep them coming
Thanks 👍
I got a bristle worm an have no clue if it's beneficial or not it's small an red
It is if its really a bristleworm there are two worm that look alike one is good the other one is not
will a copepod population be self sustaining?
ruclips.net/user/shortsUoXLHGHE2VU
Great video I already got all dry rock though. In Canada I can never find good live rock): I also have a HUGE sponge in my reef
That is awesome!
Surprised to not see starfish- brittle stars and asterina- got tons of them in my system now
Question do hitchhikers only found on live rock what about on corals....base and all
Are the silikit a food source ?
had a baby trochus snail in my new tank, he was on the glass for a few days and then disappeared. i’m hoping it’s hiding in my rocks somewhere and not dead
Very cool

What’s that zoanthid coral at the end of your presentation? Red skirt, blue face. What is that called?
Fire and Ice
I have some sponge that were attached to my live rock but, I was happy bc my butterflyfish likes pecking at the sponge
hmm thats interesting
Maybe it is the key to keeping them
Can pineapple sponges die naturally and if so does it have much of an impact on a nano tank and so how do you remove them
You would have to test the water to know for sure but unless you had a ton I don't think it would be a huge deal.
It's a blue eye hermit .... They have white markings on the claw
The hermit crab at 7:00 is a zebra hermit crab calcinus laevimanus
That strange hermit crab looks like a color morph of a blue line hermit, still not sure why yours doesn't have the blue lines on its legs
Not much. He's awesome and I love to have more of them.
Agree, i've got a few they're commonly called electric blue hermits, yours looks like some kind of hybrid!

What about peppermint shrimp and copperband butterflyfish
I’m pretty sure that big hermit is a electric blue hermit
I have a ton of pineapple sponges popping up. Lol they came out of no where.
It happensz
vermintide snails should be on the list.
I've had them they have never bothered me until they get out of hand.
Your hermit crab is actually a blue eyed hermit
Mine was covered in brittle stars
Calcinus laevimanus - if no one has answered your question yet ;)
He forgot to mention about sessile worms, they can come on live rocks and spread all over your thank 😅
Oh my
My blue legged hermit killed 3 of my turbo snails…
That will happen if there is not enough shells or if the snail falls and can not up right it’s self.
Whats up mad hatter
i get more bristle worms than anything on this list
Haha, this is the way.
Starfish
Yes
Cant forget those little bastard starfish that eat zoas
Yes! Asterina stars. F those things. I had an explosion of them. Easily 300+ in only a few months. They ate all my new zoas I got. I got a harlequin shrimp and it is helping a lot. I’ll just have to donate it to my LFS after it’s finished with them.
