Always wanted to return to Munich, Germany. I was born there in 56 during a heavy snow. I came home at about 18 months. I can’t explain why I feel connected, but I do. Raised in USA in South Carolina, it’s home and beautiful. But now that I’m 65 I’ll probably not make it back to my birthplace. I love your videos. Such a sweet cute couple! My dad was in US AirForce and that’s why we were there.

All along the Rhein there are fairs and fireworks on this weekend. Rhein in Flammen is the official name. We loved being in Koblenz for this event, stood under the bridge at the huge fort and uhed and ahed at all the beautiful explosions in the skies. Matjes Broetchen was always my favorite fair go to. Here in Tilburg the Netherlands the Biggest funfair of the Benelux and the biggest traveling one in Europe started yesterday evening. I'm going this afternoon, tomorrow evening, Monday evening, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. By then I'll be done. It's a very long funfair, very many rides, and arcades and eating spots. Those German drinking spots, we only have 2, but that's because it's in the whole city centre and a bit outside, this year the last thing on the funfair is even a 10 minute walk for me😉. I love it, after 2 years of hardly any funfair, we had a small version for 2 years with a lot of restrictions, this year it's the normal big one. Soooooo happy. Tuesday, when I go with my brother it will be a eating version lol. I love the spiral potatoe with paprika powder a lot as well. And we also have spots that sell Stroopwaffles and Poffertjes, those are uber Dutch but sooooooo good.

I'll be working in the "hospital tent" at our town's Kirmes end of August. Thank you for reminding me of those garlic pickles, I'd forgotten about them. I will also try a Backfish sandwich. When you work in the hospital tent the organizers give you a few tokens so you can eat a little for free, and since we're volunteers, that's the least they can do: )

Deep Fried everything. I remember when they had deep fried butter at the Iowa State Fair. Literally a 1/4 lb (~115 g) stick of butter, battered and deep fried. When it was done, the batter basically served as a fried doughnut soaked in melted butter. Never had one myself, but I saw news footage...
At the local minor league baseball stadium, they had deep-fried twinkies. A twinkie, batttered and deept fried, then covered in raspberry sauce and dusted with powdered sugar. I don't much like twinkies, so I never had one, but many people did.

Otherwise, it's all hoppy beer, fun & games, apples, unique purchases, livestock, concerts, and education. Then there is Renaissance Festival at the same time which is always a fun adventure.

17:34 actually the prope crêpes like the one you had, as well as the galettes, is not from all over Europe but from Brittany (Bretagne). There are many similar dishes, for example in Norway and England, but those are thicker, they are not stuffed but the topping is just added over it, AND the thing they make it on is different is called a billig which means "pan" in Breton (no link with the German word for "cheap") and it is very specific (and actually not cheap at all like for a good one you have to spend around 250€ I think).
You should come to Brittany and make a video about the food we have a lot of great dished made out of butter sugar and salt (not very healthy, I know, but it definitely tastes really good)
Anyway really interesting video as always :))

  • @MichaEl-rh1kv

1:20 Looks like a Thuringian Rostbratwurst (=roasted or grilled sausage), which is the longer cousin of the very short Nuremburg Rostbratwurst (filled with minced pork and a special mixture of herbs and spices). On some fairs they sell extraordinary long ones, e.g. with 1 m of length.
3:50 In my experience pickles became a thing at West German fairs only after reunification - which brought the Spreewald gherkins culture back.

I am from Vermont in the US. Caramel apples are my favorite fair food. My husband likes fries and a burger (not fair food imo). Fried bread dough and flavored ice are also common. And where we live the Maple barn is a go to place-- maple milk, maple creemees (soft serve), maple fried dough, maple candy, you name it, if it's maple it might be there. Do they have caramel or candy apples in Germany?

Yes, there are sugar apples, in some areas of Germany they are also called love apples.😀

When I hear fair food, I think of food that has been produced fairly. Farmers and harvesters who have been paid fairly for their work and their products.
But I think I misunderstood something.

I was wondering about the nutella crepes, whenever I'm in Germany, usually few times a year to horse related events and we ALWAYS get those lol 😅
I'm planning our family holidays for 2025 at the moment and our final destination is Italy, but we will go on a tour through parts of Europe getting there. We dont want to just go by plane and not see anything. Im putting this kirmis on the list of possible stops we can make 😎 I wanted to do part of the trip on a boat along the river, so this would be perfect if I can get all the dates to allign.🎉

Funnel cakes as you know them may be missing. But something similar might be Spritzkuchen, a "squirt cake" as the dough is squirted out a tube and into a shape, then deep fried.

Try a Fair in South Germany. its not so international like Düsseldorf its more traditional with Haxn , Schupfnudeln and so on and also for me a Fair classic are the caramelized Almonds or Peanuts. rly missed those stuff
