This was our second stop on our Germany trip to find the best city. We were pleasently surprised by how nice the vibe in Cologne was. Also: "Himmel und Äd"," Halve Hahn"... never heard of it! What do you think, which dish would be your favorite? Which cities should we visit next?
Himmel und Äd is my favorite, the Halve Hahn hmmm not so much, I mean is just a sandwich with cheese. Oh but you catched some good days, now is even schlechter.
I grew up in Bonn, and went shopping all the time in Köln. I live in Texas now and miss Germany so much. Your videos take me back. I wish I could move back. You guys should make a video about what kind of work people from America can get in Germany.
Damn, i miss Cologne! 😭 I remember whinning to my friends that my feet hurt from a whole day of walking. We were beside the Rhine eating pommes frites and curry wurst 😂 happy memories. Thanks for this video, guys!
Willy Millowitsch was one of the best known "peoples actor" of Germany especially Cologne. Maybe Americans know him from the Chevy Chase movie "National Lampoon’s European Vacation". He played the old man in this stereotypical german village where the Griswolds eat and sleep and the hosts don't know them at all. 🤣🤣🤣
Fulda is a nice place. Have you ever been their? Also Kassel. Kassel has Hercules castle and cascades beautiful to see especially at night when the lights come on. I was raised in Fulda Germany my Oma and Opa lived in Kassel I have not been home for over 40 + years get homesick sometimes.Could not afford the price of a ticked, my children are grownups now and I have a grandson he is 4 years old. I hope that one day they get to experience Germany it is a beautiful country I miss it very much.
1:43 that's the Heinrich-Böll-Platz, a public square and at the same time the roof of the Kölner Philharmonie concert hall. The problem, if people walk over the square, it makes some noise on the inside of the hall and the fancy classical musicians don´t like it. So they hired people to close the quare several times a week, costing about 100.000€ per year.
I found these two through recommended on the topic of taste testing, watched more of their videos and now here they are, walking right past my company building in my home town...the magic of the RUclips algorithm.
Enjoying your overview of German towns/cities. Hope to visit Germany and this is good way to preview places . I also appreciate the dual viewpoints you have from your German/American perspective.
My hometown ❤️ I live here now for 1 1/2 years. The history of my family starts here & I always wanted to move here.If you really consider living here I really recommend you to check out the different “Veedel” (districts). They are all so different! Not just from the way the live is there or the people. There are some districts with more nature or parks. In the summer everyone is relaxing and meeting there. The rents can be very different. When it comes to this: you can be very lucky, but often it really needs some time to find the right apartment. I’m living in Nippes and love it. The Autobahn is near, the public transport takes you where ever you want & you reach the city center & Dom very quickly, the Rhein is not far away & you have many little restaurants, café’s & store’s/ grocery stores around you. There is also a market from Monday-Saturday.
I really enjoyed my stay in Cologne i also tried the Himmel und erd quite good aye 👍did you also try the kartoffelpuffe? With applesauce very good also
Thank you for putting in so many details, such as what the weather is like that day, what the food is like, and so on. It's almost like being there too. Köln is a place I plan to visit when I go to Germany because 4711 (the original cologne) is made there & it's my favorite! :) Thanks for the preview of Köln, can't wait for more cities!
Aww, this video reminded me of my visit last Feb/March. Can’t wait to go back, had so much I still wanted to check off from my bucket list last year. Glad to see you guys enjoyed ☺️
Himmel un Ääd is a typical poor man's food. The Apple sauce is part of it and stands for the Himmel. The mashed potatoes stand for the Ääd (Earth). The blood sausage is just the side dish. On your way south you will come to my home town, Bonn. I'm a bit biased, but I think Bonn is the best City of the Rhineland.
My favorite city! Grew up in NYC but love Koln. We have stayed in Deutz several times. You can watch the Koln Philharmonic practice for 35 mins. free on Wed. Not sure if during pandemic that is happening. It gets very crowded. Did I say it's free. Fantastic venue with great sound. You probably walked across the ceiling of the Philharmonic. Security closes it off during a performance so pedestrians don't disturb the performance. The Belgian Quarter area of Koln is another area that we really liked. Great channel you two!
My hometown. 😍 You picked out the best dish...Sauerbraten. ❤️❤️❤️ Cologne is the best, best big City for sure. You should have prepared your trip a little better though, because I didn't see you go to all the great places my City offers. Best city to live for sure, when you like to live in a big City. 🙂
Thank you for another great video! Still watching and 'liking'. I look forward to the other cities you will visit. I like quasi-rural myself, with access to a city when desired.
I've only been to Germany in December. Cologne was the coldest of all locations we visited. FREEZING! We did enjoy Trier (south on the Rhine then Mosel, best Gluwein we had on the trip) and Bernkastle-Kues (met very friendly locals here!) Overall, we loved the Rhine region.
Hi, please take a trip to Mainz and visit the Woistubb´s around. Deana will love the wine and Phil will love the "Hausmannskost". We love your videos :) greetings from Meenz
Although the tours are most likely shut down right now, you would have had a great view of the city by taking a tour of the Cathedral. You up to the top, then ride a glass enclosed elevator on the exterior of the building down to the ground. Fantastich!
Welcome to my home-town. I love this city, but let's face it, the regional cuisine isn't as great as in other areas. Himmel un Ääd has been explained by plenty of people, and yes, the apple-sauce belongs in the mashed potatoes. If I remember correctly they serve it separately at Frühs. The thing you liked about the Gouda on the Halven Hahn is the fact that it usually is medium old to old Gouda. Much saltier than the regular "jonge Gouda (young gouda). And Deana fell into the "deadly Kölsch trap" Yes, Kölsch tastes relatively light compared to other German beers (A friend of mine from Bavaria once called it "Bierschorle") but that's tricky. Kölsch has 4,8% alc. and Weißbier is around 5-5,5 for the most part. Not so different. I've seen many overconfident Bavarians who ended up sleeping in the streets because they underestimated the alcohol level. =:-))) Yes the Crane houses are ridiculously expensive plus: when there is a flood, your parking garage is under water and if it really gets bad, you can only get to your fance apartment via boat.... So glad, you liked it here, but yes, real estate prices have been exploding lately. Not as bad as Hamburg or Munich, but bad nontheless.
Himmel un Äd has the apples on the plate, or as stated in the menu mixed with the potatoes. Rheinischer Sauerbraten isn't complete without a side of apple puree (it's also stated on the menu). I've heard some of the residents in the crane houses have complained about breathing in the ships' exhaust fumes. Guess what, that's what happens if you live *above* one of the world's busiest rivers.
I’m so glad you stopped in Köln after Düsseldorf! I spent so much time in Köln in my teens. I always remember walking up the tower in the Dom 😱 and the Römische Germanisches Museum is incredible. Früh Kölsch is my absolute favorite beer but I might be biased as it was the first beer I tried at age 16 😆 Stollwerk chocolate is the chocolate of Köln and there is a factory and tour center on the water below the cathedral if remember correctly, The most fascinating thing there was a giant gold chocolate fountain you could dip wafers into on your way into the factory tour. I’m hoping you also visit Stüttgart on your quest to find the best city which is an amazing city for arts and literature! And maybe look into Bremen up north - it may have changed a lot since I was last there but seemed to be a fun and interesting city.
Actually, the "less connected" city in Düsseldorf along the Rhine is a plus. You can go to the other side of the river and enjoy the huge open space, escape from the city a bit. And then during a few weeks of the Year, there is the Düsseldorfer Rheinkirmes, a huge funfair.
If you ever come back to Cologne let me know. I would like to introduce you to the really nice spots and also to the 2000 years of history in this town 😊
I’ve been to cologne about one year ago , I took part of an exchange group from my school in Israel , let’s start with the fact that Germany is my favorite country but cologne is amazing , and it has the best local beer ever kölsch
Cologne actually celebrates 1700 years of Jewish life www.1700jahre.de/english/ Even some local trains wear the message: images.app.goo.gl/y8CR3AkFQxyTXrWf9 Some Jewish friends are actually joking the Jews were here prior to the Christ.
I think next time you should drive around the city a bit too, and film. With short time, driving is sometimes a better way to see more of the city neighborhoods.
Köln is my favourite city in the world. There’s just something about it. Lots to do normally, no matter the weather. Great places to eat and drink. How did you get a bad kebab, there’s a whole Turkish area that’s full of great kebab places. If you can get on the river too, that’s a great day out.
The applesauce is a side dish. like you take some meat, potatoes, sauce and applesauce on your fork. much like with meatballs with potatoes and cream sauce where you add lingonberries
My favorite German Food is Schnitzel with Brown Mushroom gravy with Red Cabbage, Home Fries and Cucumber salad and all served with a good toasted German Bread or Rolls ! Mmmm! And a slice of Black Forest Cake for dessert ! Or Great Cheesecake !
Mannheim, has lots of bars/GasteHaus, on lots of corners, Ludwigshafen, across the river has more industry, it is at a big train cross road, an you can be in Zurick, Switerland in 2 hours on the fast train, there is a Schutzenhaus up by Sandhofen, closed on Monday and Tuesday, with Wednesday being fresh meat day, --wild boar, looks like chocolate, and you can cut it with a fork, Heidelberg is 22km away on the short autobahn, it has a good walking street, the best was a coffee/kucken shoppe called Knoblau, near the plaza under the castle, mannhein also has a long "L" shaped walking zone that ends by the Hauptbahnhof
Deanna and Phil, Guten Tag. I'm from the states, Chicago area. I was hoping one day, you may stop in Aachen, and look up the local church. It has a statue of a wolf, with a hole in its chest. The story behind it is cool. Last time I saw it was in 1976. Have a great day. Vielen Gluck. ( sorry, I dont know how to do the umlaut)
Früh was one of my favorite restaurants when I toured Germany and the Früh Kölsch my favorite beer. I think we ordered the Sauerbraten and an assortment of brats. I like it when you show us the menus in the videos. I think Köln is a beautiful city to visit the attractions but perhaps other cities are more livable.
12:30 well only one of them has apartments to live in, the other two are just office buildings 😉 (oh and side fact: an apartment on the edge over the river costs approximately 1.8 million 😅)
The food you guys ate looked really good, that typical Cologne food, especially the one Deana chose, looked very delicious. Concerning Cologne, compared to Koblenz, visually wise,I would go for Koblenz every day of the week. I think that it has more of the old town, old Germany charming vibe and style that I like much. There are probably more to do in Cologne, bigger city with 10 times more people, but also more big town stress and big town clogging, traffic wise and so on. The nicest thing there I believe,is that grandiose, very nice beautiful, amazing church,in Cologne..
I liked Cologne. Nice city for sightseeing and the Cathedral was amazing. Of the cities I visted I think Heidelberg was my favorite. Lots of history there and there's a rather sizable American population due to the military base there.
If you want to realy have some of the nicest Variety of Saugages including Blood Sausage , liver Sausage and air smoked Sausage you should check out the Hessian Region around The "Meisner Mountain", Sontra , Eschwege als Ulfen. On the Mountain itself there is a spot where you have a Restaurant With nice dining and a nice view. Also you can buy Sausage there. Another Restaurant I can Recoment in the region ist "Kloppers Brauhaus" in Sontra. There are also many regional Butchers where you even can get some of the stuff online . One I know of is called "der Teichhof".
Thanks for the tour, I have traveled through both southern Germany & the north, and want to go back soon, but now due to the pandemic I am stuck at home in Illinois. But yes, I love the Blutwurst too:-) My g-g-great grandfather was born even further east of Stettin, which now is Poland. Want to go back there too.
Nes (Jein) the locks must be removed to repair the rust protection of the fence they are attached to. Every time a train crosses the bridge, the locks shakes down paint. But then new locks can be put there. The town just doesn't know what to do with the old locks. The weight is no problem for the bridge.
It' so interesting to see the city, i moved to 3 years ago, from a tourists perspective.. like i love the city ,especially the parts around the bridge and the park but since i live here it of course feels different
One thing to consider is that Cologne goes crazy in November and again in February. If you're up for that, then it is a very nice city to live in if one can afford to. both of you would have to learn another language, though
Bremerhaven has the "Deutsche Auswandererhaus". Maybe that would be a good daytrip for you. I'm sure you would find it very interesting - I did when I went there.
Hey, the two of you! If you're checking out cities for possibly moving there, be sure to not only see the tourist attractions. Go to some actual neighborhoods (if, for lack of more time, at least the trendy, young, student ones). Cologne city center directly by the river is pretty boring (except for obivious attractions as the cathedral, museums, and views, of course). It's the districts around the inner ring street where Cologne is most happening: Südstadt, Sülz, Belgisches Viertel, Ehrenfeld, just to name a few - both for living and going out. You should give Düsseldorf another chance, too. It's on both sides of the Rhine as well - with, actually, a very beautiful (if posh and snobby) district (Oberkassel) on the bank across from Old Town. Should you come back to Düsseldorf, for more typical living quarters take a look at Unterbilk, Bilk, and Flingern-Nord, too.
Thanks for this episode. I wanted to visit Cologne with my family, but the virus thwarted our plans, so we probably won't be able to go there this year.
Also Willy Millowitsch is an icon in Cologne....und Kölsch is no Beer;-) ansonsten ne gute Impression für Touris...!! ich find habt ihr beide gut hinbekommen Köln aus Tourisicht zu zeigen :-))...Find ich gut !!!!!!
Be nice too see while you are on a road trip some towns between the cities or on the way be nice to see other land marks other things of interest that are not always promoted by travel agencies. Its great to get away sometimes from where all the tourists are flooding to and explore on your own.
This Love Lock thing didnt start in Cologne. But Cologne has probably one of the biggest "collections" around the world. It actually started in Serbia, Vrnjačka Banja, around WWI era according to wikipedia. ;)
The Apple Sauce belongs to the Himmel un Ääd , it´s the Himmel because it grows on trees . The potatoe is the Ääd becuase potatoes are growing in the Ground "Ääd"... Therefor its known as Himmel un Ääd which is served with Blutwurst...
1. Yes cologne is the town where it all started with the Love Locks. And if you tie a rope arround a magnet and throw it ito to the river and pull it up again you should have 1000's of keys hanging on it. 2. Off course that was Willi Millowitsch. He was the owner of the very famous Millowitsch Theater in the middle of Cologne 3. I wonder that you didn't take the chance of a "Brauhaustour" through several "Brauhäuser" arround the mid town. You can book cologne underground where you can see a lot of historical stuff which is left back from the roman empire and you visit certain original Kölsch Brauhäuser and also a lot of historical stuff of the "Kölsche Braukunst". 4. Rheinischer Sauerbraten is the best you can get. Original home made Sauerbraten is made of horse meat. 5. Cologne cathedrals constuction time is 600 years ... just for info. 6. The area of these crane buildungs is called "Zollhafen" But how can you just visit cologne and leave Aachen behind. Aachen is one of the oldest cities in germany and the cathedral and the old town hall is much older than colgne. ;-)
I love seeing your videos and much as they make me sad because I would have been traveling throughout Germany this month. Unfortunately I’m stuck at home in the US 😔
I've been living for six months in Essen now and I really recommend it if you wanna visit it or look for a place to live. It was an industrial city (still is) and it has not that many touristy places but it has a good amount of it. The city center is nice, the mall is right in the city center. There are very nice food places (and Asian supermarkets). There is Stadtwald which is so beautiful or Gruga Park where you can pet animals!! hehe. Also rent is not that expensive compared to Cologne or Düsseldorf. I live in a very popular neighborhood called Rüttenscheid with lots of stores, restaurants, bars, etc. I totally recommend a visit to the city
This was our second stop on our Germany trip to find the best city. We were pleasently surprised by how nice the vibe in Cologne was. Also: "Himmel und Äd"," Halve Hahn"... never heard of it! What do you think, which dish would be your favorite? Which cities should we visit next?
Deana and Phil Halve Hahn is better if you like cheese...
Himmel und Äd is my favorite, the Halve Hahn hmmm not so much, I mean is just a sandwich with cheese. Oh but you catched some good days, now is even schlechter.
Freiburg please! 💚
The right pronunciation is köln. Koeln when saying it
Kiel und Umgebung ist sehr schön

I currently live and work in Bonn. I love to work and live in Bonn. But shopping is better in CGN.
You two are doing a great job. Hope you find a great place to settle into. Cologne definitely on my must see list. From Connecticut, danke
I can't believe you didn't try a Spießbratenbrötchen. Pork done on a spit roast with onions served on a bread roll. Melts in your mouth 👌

The crust of the bread roll sounds so crispy, even on the video. I'd love one this morning.

Düsseldorf is das schönste dreckloch von NRW..love it or hate it. Me love it.
Cologne actually celebrates 1700 years of Jewish life
www.1700jahre.de/english/
Even some local trains wear the message:
images.app.goo.gl/y8CR3AkFQxyTXrWf9
Some Jewish friends are actually joking the Jews were here prior to the Christ.
Thanks for these videos of Germany. I hope I get to visit this beautiful country someday!! Keep up the great video content:)
Thank you! We will give our best! :) Germany has some nice spots!
@@DeanaandPhil I would love to see a videos of scenic locations with 🗻
Nice that you have been in my City. Its not nice for the eyes, but its nice for the heart.
Congrats on getting to 50K subscribers. Great journey so far.
Thank you for your German cities your. I really enjoy watching.
Really interesting and informativ video. Thank you! Will you also visit a city in the south of Germany? (recommendation: Freiburg im Breisgau)
Once you have to visit the legendary Live Music Hall for a concert. Near of this hall is the hotel "Regina" which is really nice!!!
Koln is one of my favorite places.
Mannheim, has lots of bars/GasteHaus, on lots of corners, Ludwigshafen, across the river has more industry, it is at a big train cross road, an you can be in Zurick, Switerland in 2 hours on the fast train, there is a Schutzenhaus up by Sandhofen, closed on Monday and Tuesday, with Wednesday being fresh meat day, --wild boar, looks like chocolate, and you can cut it with a fork, Heidelberg is 22km away on the short autobahn, it has a good walking street, the best was a coffee/kucken shoppe called Knoblau, near the plaza under the castle, mannhein also has a long "L" shaped walking zone that ends by the Hauptbahnhof
that food looked yummy...
Deana, have you tried Rouladen? It’s also meat, rolled around other things, with a pickle in the middle.
I hole you'll visit Kassel because the Bergpark is very beautiful and the "Wasserspiele" (Watergames) are amazing
They've been to the IKEA here, so I'd assume they already know Kassel quite well
@@aloeme oh thank you, this Video i havent see
Früh was one of my favorite restaurants when I toured Germany and the Früh Kölsch my favorite beer. I think we ordered the Sauerbraten and an assortment of brats. I like it when you show us the menus in the videos. I think Köln is a beautiful city to visit the attractions but perhaps other cities are more livable.
I’ve been to a viewing point in cologne I think it’s the one you’re talking about , amazing view there . U can see everything .
12:30 well only one of them has apartments to live in, the other two are just office buildings 😉
(oh and side fact: an apartment on the edge over the river costs approximately 1.8 million 😅)
Just found your channel. Heading to Koln in a month. Have to try the Fruh brewery! Where did you end up?
I Live in the suburban City Hürth , near to there and i really Like Cologne /Köln /Kölle
And yes There is a rivalry between Köln and Düsseldorf
Do you know Fischenisch?
The food you guys ate looked really good, that typical Cologne food, especially the one Deana chose, looked very delicious. Concerning Cologne, compared to Koblenz, visually wise,I would go for Koblenz every day of the week. I think that it has more of the old town, old Germany charming vibe and style that I like much. There are probably more to do in Cologne, bigger city with 10 times more people, but also more big town stress and big town clogging, traffic wise and so on. The nicest thing there I believe,is that grandiose, very nice beautiful, amazing church,in Cologne..
Love your glasses Phil where you got them?
Locks on a bridge: saw the same thing in Budapest in 2018. I’m enjoying your city tours!
I liked Cologne. Nice city for sightseeing and the Cathedral was amazing. Of the cities I visted I think Heidelberg was my favorite. Lots of history there and there's a rather sizable American population due to the military base there.
Little fact: 1:45 there is a opera in the underground :)
Deana, super mushy means something else in German, lol. Phil will explain. Love the vids, guys. Keep it up!
Keulen, Aken (Achen) , Trier and Munchen are fab!
O yeah cologne is really expensive for the rent, like all the big cities, but is also soo beautiful 😊
And congratulations on 50k subscribers 😀
It' so interesting to see the city, i moved to 3 years ago, from a tourists perspective.. like i love the city ,especially the parts around the bridge and the park but since i live here it of course feels different
One thing to consider is that Cologne goes crazy in November and again in February. If you're up for that, then it is a very nice city to live in if one can afford to. both of you would have to learn another language, though
Kölle Alaaf! Meine Kölschen Freunde... 💪👍
Good luck from Bavaria. 👍🏼
Bremerhaven has the "Deutsche Auswandererhaus". Maybe that would be a good daytrip for you. I'm sure you would find it very interesting - I did when I went there.
Absolutely, every American in Germany needs to see it! Also, Bremen's pretty cool: )
Himmel=apple puree, Erde=potato puree, Blutwurst is called "Flönz" in Cologne, a small barrel of "Kölsch" is called "Pittermännchen"
12:40 It's by the Hamburg architect Hadi Teherani.
I agree, I felt like they could have shown more of the city. I think driving around by car would help. You can see more in a couple days from a car.
Thanks for this episode. I wanted to visit Cologne with my family, but the virus thwarted our plans, so we probably won't be able to go there this year.
8:35 Mark Wiens, is that you? :D
I, Love this Church. 👍💕✝️🙏💕
When You visit next Time Cologne You have to visit the *Bieresel" or the Maltmühle they Are so much better then the früh
Beery is the best word I’ve heard recently:))
Also
Be nice too see while you are on a road trip some towns between the cities or on the way be nice to see other land marks other things of interest that are not always promoted by travel agencies.
You need to visit freiburg!
Most beautiful city 💞
And super close to the mountains. The black forrest is very pretty. And close to other countries
Das Video Wird auf Jeden Fall Cool
You need to check out Heilbronn and Stuttgart I use to live there loved it.
1. Yes cologne is the town where it all started with the Love Locks. And if you tie a rope arround a magnet and throw it ito to the river and pull it up again you should have 1000's of keys hanging on it.
2. Off course that was Willi Millowitsch. He was the owner of the very famous Millowitsch Theater in the middle of Cologne
6. The area of these crane buildungs is called "Zollhafen"
But how can you just visit cologne and leave Aachen behind. Aachen is one of the oldest cities in germany and the cathedral and the old town hall is much older than colgne. ;-)
I love seeing your videos and much as they make me sad because I would have been traveling throughout Germany this month. Unfortunately I’m stuck at home in the US 😔
lol..i still got that laptop as backup. Its a pretty nice one..
Very nice town 💖
And the five guys in Essen is already open since 2 years 🤪
Greetings from Rüttenscheid 😊
@@ninan9650 Never tried it 😂 need to give it a go.
@@kbl8387 Hiii nice to see a fellow neighbour hehe 😂💞
Please visit Rheinbach, NRW. There you find a Mexican restaurant. However, the Brauhaus is excellent.
Can you compare Long John Silver's vs Nordsee
