Idea for a video: Give Deana a German recipe, has to grocery shop and cook it. She is not allowed to use translators for help and in the store she needs to use German in case she has any questions for the food she needs to buy
I am Dutch but live 30 minutes away from the German border. I grew up with semmel knödel and I swear no one here knows what I'm talking about when I mention them. They are soooo good and there is nothing comparable to them here. When we go grocery shopping in Germany (once, twice a year) I always stock up on them. I ate them all the time when I lived in a student dorm too! Semmel knödel is definitely superior to the potato ones in my opinion
There is so much money to be made if people would just spread out those things like Semmelknödel, Awesome Mexican Burritos, American Barbecue, Döner Kebab and all of those things in the different countries. I never get why people don't do that... it's a fortune you can make with that stuff.
There is a surprising difference in Semmelknödel flour that you can buy. I have no idea how they can be so different. After I was 2 month in the Netherlands, the first thing I did after I came back to Germany was to buy the darkest, hardest bread I could find. Finally no white toast bread to put the cheese on!
I lived in Holland for almost 6 years and my favourite was Shwarmas, I've never seen Dutch-style Shwarmas anywhere else. Bitterballen, Croquettes, Loempia, they're all great too.
Hi guys, lived in Germany for years as UK Soldier, in Bunde, Herford, Osnabruck, Heidelberg (our daughter was actually born there), Sennelager, Paderborn. Love the content, stay safe x
Wow guys, great job cooking and plating your lunch! Made me soo hungry. You guys have gotten so smooth and comfortable in front of the camera, I'm so proud of you, you guys are Pros now! Phil was craving a doner, shocking absolutely no one. 🤣
Another fun and festive video! My sons and I will be in Düsseldorf in about 3-weeks and now we know where to get a döner! We've also been making schnitzel at home, which has been sehr lecker! If you go to München and want to do a video on a great place for schnitzel, go to Drei Mühlen. They have several types of schnitzel that are awesome! I recommend the Schnitzel Trio - 3-types of schnitzel on one plate. Keep up the great work! The bbq you had in South Carolina looked awesome!
14:56 min In Hamburg you mostly get "Uludag Gazoz" (a Turkish lemonade) in the Döner-grills. In my opinion it tastes better than Sprite or Fanta, because it is less sweet and more refreshing.
Every Monday morning my grandfather would come over to my family's flat and tap on the windows with his keys. He and my father worked together but my dad loved to sleep in. Grandpa would bring a box of pastries and coffee, and I remember eating cheese danishes that were so damn good. This video is a strong call back to those memories.
The meal you just made looks very delicious I would definitely eat it. We make breaded fried sauted chicken in a pan like that here in the United States, some of us even put gravy on it, I make a delicious Hunter's gravy with mushrooms. I also make dumplings and I also make purple red cabbage from scratch and I put raisins in it and it's delicious.
Good to see you guys. Doner Kebab is defiantly something I crave from Germany and its not here in the US. The Gyro is not quite the same. And no would not pay $17 for one the best thing is they are cheap and good to eat while on the go.
of course, my Alexa heard you speaking to your Alexa and started a 10 minute timer. Glad you are back! loved the cooking, and in the US try for shawarma instead of Döner. Similar and more common, many places that have felafel, have shawarma.
Thanks for your content... Love the cooking at home.. I'm American who's family is from Garmisch/ Munich... Today I still make traditional food that I learned from my Mom, who learned from hers... It's priceless knowledge... Again, thank you both. Take care.
Every time I am in Germany, the first thing I do is hit a bakery to get myself a couple laugenkasestange or two (one for later!). For those who don't know, this is basically a pretzel "baguette" cut open and put back in the oven for a moment to melt cheese on top. They rule!!
Toll to see you two back in D-dorf! Soon... "I'll be beck!" Immediately recognized wonderful Karlsplatz. While you were there, you should have grabbed an a-MA-zing cappuccino at 'Cøffe am Karlsplatz'! They're always delicious works of art!
Hello from Texas! I stumbled through channels and found y'all. I really like the energy. I really really love the diversication that y'all present. AWESOME vids and keep up the great work!
I enjoyed the home cooking segment, it was nice to see some homecooked and even the already semi-prepared foods. Nice glimpse of what people eat at home. I can't believe how affordable döner kebab is! At least where I live in the US it's hard to find any food for $5-7 outside of a convenience store. Even fast food has become pretty expensive.
thick pork/chicken schnitzel, red cabbage and simply polatoes is common meal in Poland and my mosdt favourite dish. I cook it since living in Barcelona too. You must visit Poland guys. I am sure you will feel like at home if go to Wroclaw.
You two are such a fun couple to watch...I love your shared passion for food between the 2 countries 😊❤ As german born girl who has lived in the US and spent most of her life in the UK so much of your content really resonates with me. Keep up the fun stuff Phil and Deanna! 🥨🍔🥐🍕🍟🍺🍹🥙🥯
Ah, you got a Laugenecke, my favorite! I always force Americans to try them cuz what are they anyway? A pretzel/croissant perfectly done with so much butter. I've never had one as a sandwich so I can only imagine. They also stay good for several days, if they start to go bad you can put them in the microwave for a couple seconds and they're great again. I'm so happy for you!
(Pita)gyros is tradionally made from pig, which is forbidden in Muslim countries and not considered as kosher by Jews...Therefore Döner is with Beef, Chicken or sometimes Lamb or Mutton..
@@martinkasper197 I don’t know what type of gyros you’re getting but here where I live they’re made of a combination of beef and lamb. It’s a solid pressed meat made of ground up beef and lamb and spices. Very common type of gyros here in the Chicago area.
@@pjschmid2251 So you don't have the greek Gyros, but the dish from the middle east? It's funny that according to historic recordings the origins of greek Gyros should be in the small turkish town Ortu Kebab...😂😂😂

I have to agree with Phil the Döner is my favorite i think. But I've been living in bavaria for about 8 months now (Inspired by you two) and I love the simplicity of german quisine and the best bier in der welt.
I love these videos! They bring back so many happy memories when I got to visit Germany with my high school! These videos also make me wish we had restaurants that made all of these amazing foods near where I live.
sorry but Döners are a "new" thing. Until 1990 these were unknown in Germany (maybe known in some sections of Berlin?). What was known was "Curry Wurst" which one could get at any corner store with a beer and Semmel.
7€?!?!? Here In the SE of Austria with enormous inflation it's still 3,50€ for a Döner and 4€ with cheese (which I prefer). And the best drink ist still either Uludag (Turkish Sprite) or an Efes beer!
The Aldi Semmel Knoedel box - we normally get the Au Gratin - the funny part is the font they use. My husband calls it "Bavarian font". Anyway, try the Au Gratin next time. It's so unhealthy. But so yummy.
Bakeries in US are dying in US but in Philadelphia you can still find bakeries and all Jewish bakeries still have cheese, cherry, lemon or blueberry pastry called danish. There is still plenty of nut breads, great rye or black breads Italian bakeries abound with great canoli, unbelievable cakes.
Can't wait to try those doners if they are south of Dusseldorf. Coming to Germany in Aug and look forward to your next videos as we will be going to those places too!

Personally, I feel like making Schnitzel at home is too much work, but that meal looked great! I will say, though, that we have a lot of fun making Spätzle from scratch. Worth it!
Kinda sounds like friends of mine who can't imagine cooking for just themselves, but I've always felt why not I deserve it. Schnitzel takes for a person who doesn't cook regularly 20 min. You can have the butcher slice them in advance, easy peezy from there and well worth it. Love Spatzle with Chicken Paprikosh, yummy.
NYC has döner, but it’s hard to find lamb. I just tried a new “authentic” shop, Döner Haus in the East Village but I only had the choice between chicken and beef. I tried the spicy chicken… it’s close, including the bread roll… so close.
Hi Deana & Phil! We were in Düsseldorf last week (we looked for you, but didn't see you. LOL) and went to Haus des Döners two days in a row! Super good! I even had a Fanta Exotic. Thanks for the recommendation! We also went to the Edeka across the street, which is a really nice grocery store, to stock up on our favorite German snacks and treats. I sure wish there was a Haus des Döners where we live in Washington State!!!
I like the cooking in the video especially that some stuff isn't from scratch. You guys have such a good vibe. Thank you for another great video. Love from Miami ❤️🌞
I love the German food videos please show us more. I am definitely in to the German food and Polish food and Austrian food. My ancestors from my mother's side are from those regions.
@@DeanaandPhil Well I love seeing the German scenery and food. I would also love seeing the Poland scenery and food, same with Austria. Also have interest in Italy and a couple other European countries. Not so much interested in Scandinavian countries. Not interested in seeing fermented shark or sheep heads. I also definitely love the USA tours. The next time you come to the USA, please have Deana take you to Williamsburg Virginia and the old country, and also Myrtle Beach for the Fantastic seafood buffets and beautiful beaches. Both places are very close to where Deana's family is in South Carolina.
My mother had the opportunity to visit Germany for the first time about 10 years ago...my great grandparents were immigrants from there. One of the things she could not get over was how different the flavor and texture of the bread was,,,how much lighter it is than what we have here in the USA.
I personally can never understand putting anything wet like a sauce or gravy on to something you've taken time, care, and effort to make crispy. But you guys look like you enjoyed it. Pastries looked delicious. I used to live in Florida, and the thing I craved most and had almost immediately upon arriving back in the UK was a Bacon sandwich with tomato ketchup... yum 😋
It all looks delicious, I'm so thankful that when I was 21 the army sent me to Japan, it was there I learned that exotic gourmet food in my home town is what mama makes for dinner in other places 🤠
Since I got my 49€ Deutschlandticket, I went to Cologne a few times and tried the Döner that was voted No.1 in Germany. Spoiler alert, it was good, but not the best I've ever had. The bread was fresh, which was very nice, the taste of the meat was okay, but I didn't really like the texture. I'll try "Haus des Döners" next time and maybe it is better. I'm usually quite satisfied with the Döners you can buy on the "Dönermeile" in Krefeld (The street that starts directly at the central station and is littered with Döner Kebab shops.)
Yay! You’re going to Heidelberg! I went to middle school around that area. It’s been years tho. The base I went to school at is closed. Actually, all the schools I went to on base are closed now 😢
I am german and I love Döner as much as you. It is the perfect fast food. It is so hearty because of the meat and the sauce (guys really try to find a shop that uses real meat and not just minced meat). At the same time it is so fresh because of all the vegetables. Then the bread is the next game changer. It needs to be real flat bread and it needs to be toasted. For Sauces I recommend, Garlic, Herb and spicey (all together)
I paid $15+ for a Doner in Portland and almost $20 for one here in the Bay Area. Both times I was disappointed. I knew Phil was going to have a Doner for one of his first meals haha!
When I was stationed in Germany 1978 82. Loved eating the schnitzel the meat was pork with the mushrooms sauce. And we were in Lemgo town centre we would pop into a Greek bar and they sold gyros but the meat was pork 😘😋😋😋🍽️🍽️. I went back there a few years later and most of the places were closed down 😔😔😔 shame

Agree 100% that good bakeries are few and far between in the US, I think most Americans have chosen the large grocery bakeries which are cheap and not very good. Would love to see an occasional cooking video, I’m German on my Fathers side so most of our German recipes were lost….
Throw the Knödel in the pan shortly before serving to give 'em a little crust, works best with a little Griebenschmalz. For weapons-grade Schnitzelpanade grind up some Paprikachips (Potatoes, Phil! Potatoes on your Schnitzel!) and add it to the Panade.

The Japanese have their version of Hahnchen Schnitzel it;s Tori Katsu which is very popular in Japan and Hawaii. We have it with either gravy either brown, chicken gravy, soy sauce, Katsu sauce, or ketchup.
If i were back in Kitzingen at the Gasthaus near the bent tower it would be pfeffersteak, i hope i spelled that right, with kartofellen and broccoli and the very kind hausfrau asking me if i would like coffee after my meal and going out of her way to find me an "american" sized cup. I was there for a year in 1992 with the Army and my duty days were 10 days on and 5 days off. After 10, 12 hour days in a row i would treat myself to a meal, alone, at that gasthaus. Im embrassed i dont remember the name of it but it was on a platz right around the corner from the bent tower. Oh!! And the Doner shop right around the corner from it!

I am Dutch but my parents come from Suriname. My fathers parents come from India and my mothers parents are from Fiji. Back in 1900's when slavery was not allowed anymore, they (The Dutch, English etc.) created Contract laborers. The VOC (Dutch East India Company) went to Asia (India, Indonesia (Java) and others). To get people to work on their plantation's around the world and in Suriname. This ofcours was never done in a friendly manner. Then after 1904 all that contract stuff stopped. And the Dutch wich owned Suriname told them that they can stay in Suriname or go back home. Many stayed and so allot of food cultures fused. It is why you have allot of Surinamese foods in The Netherlands wich tastes different then the original mostly. It is for everyone what they like better ofcours. So i hope when you come to the Netherlands again you try the Best Surinamese restaurants or take aways places. 👍🏽😇

I just love your videos. Phil looked like a child at Christmas 🎄
Drizzledorf....😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks so much! I was just in Dusseldorf in May and I miss it already!
Phil I love your posture, shoulders back and back straight. My Mom's parents were German immigrants you sure DIDN'T slouch around them or my Mom.❤❤❤❤
I lived in Werl, a small town east of Dortmund for about 3 years. Loved it!
I love the German food videos please show us more. I am definitely in to the German food and Polish food and Austrian food. My ancestors from my mother's side are from those regions.
Deana has been wanting to go to Poland for a while! Let us know if there is anything specific you recommend!
PS.... when you asked Alexa to set a timer mine answered. ... You probably set off hundreds. LOL.
I used to live in Florida, and the thing I craved most and had almost immediately upon arriving back in the UK was a Bacon sandwich with tomato ketchup... yum 😋
Try out the "Schloss Döner" in Benrath (you know, that southern district of Düsseldorf with the pink castle ;-) )
Actually, all the schools I went to on base are closed now 😢
8:53 Thank you guys, now i´m very hungry... and a little bit scared. 🤤😱🤣👍
I feel that way about the greek gyros. I just love them❤
When I was stationed in Germany 1978 82.
HI GUYSSSS!! Jared and I have been in our Germany feeeels and figured no better way to make us miss it even more was to binge your videos lol. I am craving some schnitzel and pastries now 🥹🥹 miss you guys and hope you are doing well. Sorry we’ve been so MIA on patreon - life has been non stop. 💜💜💜
We hope things get better for you all! 💜 Also, hope you were able to get a schnitzel and pastries! haha
You can get Döner in the U.S it’s “Gyro” it’s very very similar
Agree 100% that good bakeries are few and far between in the US, I think most Americans have chosen the large grocery bakeries which are cheap and not very good. Would love to see an occasional cooking video, I’m German on my Fathers side so most of our German recipes were lost….
Throw the Knödel in the pan shortly before serving to give 'em a little crust, works best with a little Griebenschmalz.
For weapons-grade Schnitzelpanade grind up some Paprikachips (Potatoes, Phil! Potatoes on your Schnitzel!) and add it to the Panade.
Lmaooo the tinted chapstick at the end had me weak!! He was like what is this?! 🤣🤣
At 2:40, that's $5 in the U.S. -- plus tax and plus a prompt for a tip.
Oh the bakeries ! We loved them when we visited !
Cut the dumplings into 1 cm thick slices and fry them in the pan! Yummie 😋
Ohhh now you're talking!!!
$17 for a Doener is just ridiculous , here is Colorado you can go to a Mediterranean Shop and get a Doener for $5.00
Ich hatte letzten Sonntag Wiener Schnitzel (Kalb) mit Bratkartoffeln gemacht. So einfach, so schnell soooo lecker.
I’ll take you guys out for lunch or dinner your choice!! 😁
You may also use a rolling pin to flatten the chicken. :) Best done at room temperature.
The Japanese have their version of Hahnchen Schnitzel it;s Tori Katsu which is very popular in Japan and Hawaii. We have it with either gravy either brown, chicken gravy, soy sauce, Katsu sauce, or ketchup.
Looks absolutely fantastic. Berlin is also the home of the Curry Wurst.😊
People from Hamburg challenge that.
We'll be in Dusseldorf Wednesday to Saturday as it's my birthday on Friday so may follow a similar routine to this...
OMG you are making me so hungry. WOW what an awesome meal.
Chicken Snitziel is readily available in Israel--it can be found everywhere along with fries.
HA! I knew Phil was craving either a currywurst or a döner kebab. 🤣🙏 Yummy foods! Right up there with pizza, I'd honestly even choose them over it. 😘
Well guys, I haven’t heard back from you two, I’m here at n Düsseldorf at the American BBQ you guys once aired not to long ago, thought I’d checke it out 😜
Pork or veal the traditional smothered in gravy brown severs with cabbage red and spetle
Living in SF you can get Doner kebabs easily, we pretty much have everything. We also have some great German restaurants.
