It's a long story about how it came to be, but at their height, Dokken ended up at my house for a cookout. My dad's business partner's wife was friends with Don Dokken, and they were coming to our city for a concert. My dad had no idea who they were but their tour bus pulled into our secluded driveway and when they stepped out he laughed and told my friend and I that; "your heavy metal people just showed up". My dad made steaks and chicken on the grill, and he went out of his way to make them feel welcome (as he always did), and my friend and I talked their ear off all night. Don Dokken was a little standoffish and a little full of himself (but much better than some stories I heard about him later), but the rest of the band, especially George Lynch, was great. They were playing with our German Shepherd, telling stories, and were really genuinely nice guys. It was a pretty cool evening.

Dokken is incredible. One of my favorite bands of the 80's rock/metal era. They have so many good songs that would be worth a reaction, like "Dream Warriors" (Freddy Krueger appears in the music video and the song appears in the movie), "In My Dreams", "Heaven Sent", "Stop Fighting Love", "It's Not Love", among others.

  • @sumonjamal1653
    @sumonjamal1653 2 года назад +2

Dokken emerged in the 80's from the same L.A. scene that gave us bands like Motley Crue, Ratt, Van Halen, Armored Saint, Quiet Riot, etc... Both lead singer Don Dokken and guitarist George Lynch had been playing in local bands since the 70's, but they decided to team up and made a good musical chemistry in the early 80's... Dokken tried making a name in Europe and recorded their debut album 'Breaking the chains' in 1983 w/ drummer Mick Brown and bassist Juan Croucier (who would leave to join Ratt)... bassist Jeff Pilson joined that year as the record came out in '83 in the USA... But it was the 2nd album 'Tooth & nail' in 1984 that put Dokken on MTV and pushed the record to platinum success (1 million copies) w/ singles like 'Alone again' and 'Just got lucky'.
With success, the band was signed to Q-Prime management (who signed Metallica in 1985) , but Dokken took the 'glam' image that was popular in that era... George Lynch claimed he hated the costumes he had to wear on the 3rd album 'Under lock & key' in 1985, which also went platinum... but they wanted the multi-platinum success that Motley Crue and Scorpions. Adding to that, Lynch and Don Dokken were clashing personally and creatively... the next album 'Back for the attack' in 1987 had the singer & guitarist record in separate states. It was another platinum success, but Dokken was coming apart as a band.
In 1988, the live album 'Beast from the East' (which went gold, selling a half million copies) was recorded in Japan, but that summer, Dokken was on a tour w/ Van Halen and Metallica, and they found themselves being blown offstage by an energetic Metallica (Both Dokken and Van Halen saw half the audience leave when they played) and a tour w/ Accept proved difficult... After months of turmoil, Dokken split in early 1989 after Don & George were unable to carry on working together.
George Lynch formed the short-lived Lynch Mob... Don Dokken released a solo album in 1990 - 'Up from the ashes'.
Dokken reunited in 1994 (Don, George Jeff & Mick) and released the 'Dysfunctional' album in 1995... but George Lynch proved problematic and the next album 'Shadowlife' in 1997 was a poor effort... George Lynch was fired, and so was Jeff Pilson eventually. Dokken carried on w/ new members, but could not recapture their past successes. Mick Brown left a while ago... Don Dokken has kept Dokken active w/ guitarist Jon Levin.

Great choice!! George Lynch is one of my all-time favorite guitarists… He, the late, great Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen grew up in the same area, more or less. In fact, George Lynch was the one who inspired Randy to get his Flying V after playing a similar one that he had built by the same people. If you want to hear more of Mr. Lynch, try Dokken’s incredible “Mr. Scary”, “Kiss of Death”, “Heaven Sent”, and “When Heaven Comes Down”, and his own band, Lynch Mob, with “Wicked Sensation”, “Testify”, “All I Want”, “Slow Drag” and “Tangled in the Web”. I could go on forever about his playing, but if that doesn’t get you hooked then nothing will!! Brad and Lex, you’ve done it again!!

Dokken was one of the first hard rock bands I started listening to in the early-to-mid 80's. My brother found a few of their cassette tapes left in a car he bought and we both loved their music. I followed the band throughout their career and used to jam to their music. Back before there was such a thing as bass speakers in a car, I remember bleeding my ears to Dokken's first three albums on my 6x9's in the back of my '68 Buick LeSabre (which was old even then, but loved that car). George Lynch (lead guitarist) has a unique sound/tone that you can't find anywhere else. Unchain the Night, which is off of the Under Lock and Key album, is one of my favorite jams; it hits so hard and the intro is just amazing to me. Don Dokken's voice is one of a kind; the nasally sound and vibrato.

Back in 1992 I used to pick up checks for telemarketing companies in Los Angeles. I play guitar and my young boss was a drummer. That day it was time to go pick up a check, but he cautioned me that this is a special person you're picking up from. He knew I loved this band... so he told me not to get excited.
My boss said to go to pick a check-up from Don Dokken. I was so happy and excited LOL. The band was hiding behind a mirror company, and I got to meet all of them. I was sitting right across George Lynch While Don was interviewing somebody, and six hot ladies walked in for a music video and he gave the thumbs-up for them to be in the video. Meanwhile I'm sitting across George Lynch watching him write a song for the next album. I was like could you imagine all the hot girls wanting to be in my place right now.
It was finally my turn, and I spoke with Don Dokken, I had to convince him to buy a quarter page ad in a school magazine. He looked at the magazine and said... this is something you would throw away in the garbage after you saw it once. I told him I'm only the messenger and it's going to a good cause. He finally agreed and wrote me a check. I still have his autograph to this day.

At five years old, my son sang the first bit of the song acapella. He had heard the song so many times from me. He also hummed HEAVEN AND HELL by Black Sabbath. You absolutely knew what he was humming. I was a proud parent.

One thing you always have to give hair/glam metal bands credit for is their amazing guitar work. George Lynch, Warren DeMartini, Mick Mars, Vito Bratta, and Akira Takasaki (if you count Loudness as hair metal) are just some of the names but their are a number of others.

Hey guys what's up! Greetings from South Florida! Brings me back to 11th grade. Love me some George Lynch. Him, Eddie Van Halen, and Randy Rhoads, where the Big 3 from the LA scene in the late 70s. Three of my favorites. You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!

George Lynch was one of the "big 3" guitarists in the L.A. scene along with Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads. He was in the running to be Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist until Randy auditioned and won the gig.

Dokken released their first album and hit the scene with "Breaking The Chains" in 1982. "The 80's" hadn't really been defined yet and we were in a state of transition. 70s metal had died, disco was on its way out, and bands like The Knack and The Romantics and The Tubes were gaining momentum. Rock artists that were best in that gap include Sammy Hagar (Only One Way To Rock, I'll Fall In Love Again, You're Love Is Driving Me Crazy) Billy Squire (Lonely Is The Night, The Stroke, In The Dark, My Kind Of Lover) Mannfred Mann (I Came For You) 707 (I Could Be Good For You) and Axe (Knock Down, Drag Out, Rock 'n Roll Party In The Street). The real 80's vibe kicked in with Bryan Adams, Rick Springfield, John (Cougar) Mellencamp, where they blended edgy guitar work with pop/rock. Huey Lewis and the News was also part of the same development. Bands like The Tubes, The Knack, The Romantics, fell way to a later movement that sparked alternative in the late 80s/early 90s. The rest was eaten up by pop acts like Madonna, Prince, Whitney Houston, or New Wave (Howard Jones, Flock of Seagulls, INXS, Tears For Fears).
Dokken was on the early edge of 80s hard rock/metal with Motley Crue, Ratt, Quiet Riot, Whitesnake, Dio, Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy, Dio, Judas Priest, Sammy Hagar, Van Halen, The Scorpions, AC/DC... all have 70s roots but still influenced the direction of 80s hard rock/metal. Metallica is responsible for exploding the 80s metal scene. Megadeth, Testament, Slayer, Armored Saint, Savatage, Metal Church, Raven, Lizzy Borden, Helloween, Accept, Venom, Overkill, Anthrax... were all benefactors of Metallica's recognition. In my opinion, the two best, overlooked, overshadowed bands in this list are Savatage and Armored Saint. Savatage blended classical composition with their metal style and Armored Saint just had some of the coolest, "hookingest", guitar riffs of the era.

A few fun bits of trivia for the song
    > The riff is heavily inspired by a Judas Priest song called Some Heads Are Gonna Roll
    > They shot the music video on the side of an active volcano and helicopered Lynch when his boots started to melt
    > The Album this was on was called "Tooth and Nail" and was called so because it was the Band's last ditch effort to stay in the money (As in, fighting tooth and nail)
Unrelated but the Band also sung on the soundtrack for Nightmare on Elm Street 4 (Dream Warriors) and on the set for a music video for their song called Dream Warriors they snorted cocaine off Freddy Kruger's claws, which is probably the most metal thing ever done.
