This is the gold star video on RUclips! So helpful! A good chalk paint also works beautifully for Ikea furniture. If you know in advance you're going to paint a new piece of Ikea furniture - sand, prime & paint first.
This was such a helpful video . I know nothing about refinishing furniture and now I feel like I have some good basics to start with. Loved your style of comparing and explaining . Very thorough and clear , A+!!!! 👏🏽
I followed your video and got the same primer and BJ paint today. Sanding and priming is done so fingers crossed. This video was so helpful. Thank you! 😊
I've watched many, many videos on how to paint Ikea furniture and this one is the best one I've seen by far. The "experiment" was incredibly helpful as was the recommendation to use cabinet paint. Watching this video has given me the confidence to finally paint my dresses and night tables. Wish me luck and thank you!
Yes! I’ve seen so many people that suggest/teach that you don’t have to sand at all, which is one reason I really wanted to experiment with everything! To show how important it is!
This experiment came at the perfect time in my feed! I was wondering about the same thing! Thanks for experimenting and sharing your experience! I’m using this info to paint my ikea Kallax.
Great video! Thanks for the upload. I request you to upload videos where you give paint numbers matching existing Ikea furniture MALM like Brown/Black, Grey, White etc. so we can paint the exact way.
Thanks a bunch! Definitely subscribing. I plan to repaint our ikea alex drawer from white to black and this was what I needed. Just to confirm, sand> prime> sand a little again> then paint? Thank you!
So, did you remove the Ikea top and make a custom extended top to cover the little side piece that you added? You replaced the top after the painting was done? What did you use for the top? I wish you had shown the entire process of how you added the top and exactly how you built the beautiful drawer fronts. (I'm not smart enough to figure all that out without specific instructions.) Great job though. I love it!
We had extra oak from another project so we laminated it together and made custom counter tops for these built-ins. But you could also get a pre-made wood counter top from a hardware store, cut it to size and do the same thing :) This video just goes over the painting - the actual build happens in this video ruclips.net/video/BZkNRAHOR-I/видео.htmlsi=Sa2JfS28hv0NKP1Z or search "Reading Nook & Upstairs Loft Reveal" on our channel :). Thank you for making this video! I’ve watched so many videos on IKEA hacks and appreciate how you broke it down to the main questions everyone asks. What grit do you recommend sanding your furniture at? I have a medium brown hemnes 6-drawer dresser.
Very helpful video. Can I ask when you refer to sanding between 1st and second coat.. is that sanding between primer and first coat of paint or between 1st and 2nd coats of paint? Do you need to sand between primer and 1st coat of paint? Thank you.
a light sand (like 200 grit plus) between any coat will help for a great finish. But if you wanted to minimize the sanding I would just do a light sand between the primer and first coat of paint.
Love this video, answers pretty much all the questions i needed answering going forward doing my own project, So thank you for that :) one question tho, The Bullseye 123 primer, does work work using a sprayer?
Please please please let me know if your chosen primer ended up going on smooth! I have had the worst time imaginable with the Shellac Bin primer! It comes out litered with inconsistencies like divits, globs and an abrasive finish. I've been DESPERATE to find a better option and seeing your alternative seems like a godsend. I have already primed 8 pieces of the Billy Bookcases and thank GOD I used the parts that won't be seen. 😭
Great timing! We have a video coming up this weekend showing how to get a great finish. You have to be careful with the HVLP sprayers as they can create a texture finish. Check in on the weekend to see our dresser flip video!
Hi Lindi and Russ! I heard you say in the video that you use Benjamin Moore Onyx, but is it their INSL-X cabinet coat line or their regal select line? Thanks in advance!
Hey just loved your video i have hauga ikea dresser and i dont know what paint to use on it? Sanding, priming and paint right? Anything to seal the paint or not?
@@LindiandRuss Thank you Lindi! Found your channel yesterday and binged, love what you do ❤ I was always in the workshop with my dad, getting back into it now. And welcome to beautiful BC 😊
We didn't test oil based paint as it is getting harder to find (I don't think you can buy in Canada anymore except for some specialty paints). So just went with the common ones found in the stores.
Hello Thank you for making this video, you inspired me. I wanted to use latex instead of cabinet paint, you said that has been tested but you didn’t talk about it Isn’t good?
The latex just didn't hold up as good. The cabinet paint had better scuff and scratch resistance. The cabinet paint is better for high traffic/touch point areas.
I got sent here by @diydanie . I've never tried to paint laminate before I usually use the shellac bin because I'm painting wood and I have tannin bleed through. Usually sanding between coats has to do more with getting a smooth even finish then with bonding itself. Sanding between primer and paint would only make a difference if the primer went on kind of lumpy or rough. I would love to know by what you meant by like latex paint and cabinet paint? any of these chalk paints or mineral paints? What brand? What sprayer did you wreck? I'm going to have to check out that extreme Bond stuff cuz I've been doing a fair amount of furniture work. I don't foresee myself doing a lot of laminate but I do currently have an Ikea desk but I kind of beat up and I'm switching up my desk and give it to my kids so it's going to be in the living room and I either need to paint the top or contact paper it. Do you know if that primer happens to block tannins? Thanks for the video
Extreme bond is alot easier to use and clean up. Shellac really shines for preventing bleed through on bare wood. As long as your apartment is ok with painting - I would go with extreme bond. If you are just painting walls, a primer like bulleye 1-2-3 is fine too.
I'm jealous, I used SW Extreme Bond and had horrible results. It scratched off so easily with my fingernail even though I sanded prior. The only difference is my SW Extreme primer was tinted. So maybe that was the difference maker.
We’ve used the tinted primer lots! Is it possible you didn’t give it enough time to set? We’ve used it on so many projects and have had literally zero issues - tinted and not-tinted!
@@LindiandRuss thanks for responding. Any video on how you made it? I have a white hemnes dresser I am about to start and would like to do that kind of top. Assuming I could just use plywood and stain it?
