Infinitely better man than we have now! JFK was not perfect -- no one is; everyone has relative strengths and weaknesses. Every time I can look at Kennedy in action, over 56 years after his death, the tragedy of his having his life snuffed out seems greater. I am glad we have footage of his news conferences, for among many things they give examples of mutual respect. A lot can be learned from that.

This was the day before my 11th birthday. During the Cuban Crisis, I remember being at school, my favorite teacher talked to us about what was going on. I remember looking up at the rain and fog on the mountain behind our school. I thought I want to see the sun shine and a blue sky before I die. The sun did come out and the sky was blue. We were scared because where we lived in southeast Kentucky, we're less than 100 miles from Oak Ridge, Tennessee. We knew Oak Ridge would be a target. I've often wondered what this country would be like if President Kennedy had lived. I don't think he would want this country going towards Socialism the way many Democrats now seem to want. President Kennedy was my hero. I'm 70 years old. I have him and God to thank for all of us to be here. I've got 2 adult children, 5 grandchildren, and 2 small great-grandchildren.

John F. Kennedy is still, over 55 years after his death, a vastly underrated president. He was an extraordinary and a complex man who did not have enough time to develop, although he was developing a remarkably independent streak as he gained more confidence in his ability to handle tricky domestic and international problems. The mass media were more on their toes, generally, than today. Exception: sophomoric question in re invasion of Cuba. But, by contrast, what a different attitude from recent occupants of the White House, in Mr. Kennedy’s response!

Nor so much more on their toes as they were seeking the actual truth. Today's media finds the truth to be disdainful. That being the case they make up facts. Never have the press been more dismissive of truth, respect, facts, and ethics.

And this isn't the only time he talked publicly, directly to the news media, on the record, about how important it was that they do their job in reporting what a presidential administration was up to, even-indeed, especially-when the coverage be unfavorable.
With Donald Trump, the behavior of the presidential administration has fallen into the abyss, and too many in the media (on both the left and the right) have not done a good enough job of keeping themselves from falling right down there with him.
There's reason to hope things will get closer to a proper norm again under President Biden.

In a sit down JFK did in December of 1962 with reporters from the then Big Three Networks he espoused as such. The kicker is he reminded them of the responsibility of the press. Which is not to distort things. Not to take some news in order to prove a political point. He said the press should be as hard as they can on an administration with the intent to get as close to the truth as they can and not merely because of some political motivation.

As far as I'm concerned, and I mean every word of this... John Kennedy saved my life. In 1962 I was 10 and living with my Dad just outside of Boston and with my Mom on the beach at Hyannis, about two miles from the Kennedy compound. I therefore was in the midst of two nuclear air bases, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyards (servicing subs,) the fifth busiest airport in the US and MIT. I would have suffered the effects of at least two nuclear explosions and as many as four. And by the way, I believe Khrushchev saved my life as well thanks to his fighting off the panicked hawks in the Politburo.

I know because I was a 13 year old 8th grader in a Catholic grade school and we most certainly took this situation seriously. Our teacher a nun told us that we could stay in the classroom for as long as this crisis lasted and I raised my hand and said "Sister, if you don't mind me and my friend and my younger sister want to walk home because if we are going to die I want to die with my mother". She didn't like that very much!!!! This was not a trumped up crisis - it was very, very real and we all took it seriously. I am here because of the way it was handled.

The US Senate, Congress, Press, political &. crazy flag waving Commie hating American voters. Kruschev understood. He was top military dude in Moscow during German invasion. He knew death & sent the missiles home. Kruschev won. He got a promise USA wouldn't invade Cuba. Which the US had spent $ Billions, on planning.

@@DzNutz-kf9ob good ? History is not just being there. I was. But the advent of cable TV history shows & right here at RUclips. I still remember TV shows from the mid 50s. JFK & wife were a chic young 2ple. Diff from what preceded them. BTW. This clip we just saw? Topic would be on early daytime shows. "NBC's Today show", or any of the Sunday political talk shows. The 5:30 Central National News shows were BIG. Cronkite CBS, Huntley & Brinkley on NBC. When TV showed JFK & wife in Latin America & Europe? They adored them. The atomic Cold War fears. We're given a New hope. that youth, smarts & kids in the White House would/could heal those fears. Even today. I read of racial improvements JFK offered, in our economy, that Congress didn't approve of. Those Bills Were implemented by LBJ. In His honor. Also, magazines & newspapers reported on these pressers. Why did the press stand at the end? Respect, and to get out of there to fille their reports. I was listening to Rush limbaugh yrs ago. John Kennedy Jrs plane went down east of Massachusetts, in the sea. Navy, coast guard aided in looking for the plane. Rush took a call. "I don't want my tax $$ spent looking for a Kennedy.". One jerk, so what. But Limbaugh did Not chastise or correct him. U & me, I hope never think that's good national media.

    • @brucetowell5208

Yes, but also his handlers should make the press stay in an auditorium like this to ask questions, STAND, then sit down after the question is asked. Make the press act formal!!!.....It's just too much of a free for all with the idiots we have submitting questions to our President!!!

Even better if the modern-day press would study how the press behaved in 1962 and get back to that. Most of today's politicians aren't the problem - the press is. Why in the hell do you think that I abandoned my pursuit of a career in journalism (which I was VERY well suited for)? The politicians are what they've always been - publicity seekers and self-promoters. That was true long before virtually ALL so-called journalists became the hopeless and shameless hacks that they are today.
