100 years apart. In an actor portrayal of Kennedy (Mike Farrel, JFK A One Man Show) Kennedy invokes Lincoln. Kennedy mused on Lincoln, that being elected to a second term, gave Lincoln his place in history, he was able to end the Civil War and prepare for the reconstruction but the Kennedy legend rests with what might have been. That's true in some ways but Kennedy did a lot (peace Corps, Alliance for Progress, Nuclear test ban treaty, Tax reductions, civil rights, the reach for the moon and the peaceful end to the Cuban Missile crisis). If he didn't finish at least he began. "All this will not be finished in the first 100 days, nor in the first 1,000 days, nor in the life of this administration, nor even perhaps in our lifetime on this planet, but let us begin."

This was when a press conference was a pleasant discussion between our leader and the news reporters, not a verbal brawl. It was when the only people you would expect to be rude with one another in a political talk, would be two rowdies at a bar, but not in the State Department auditorium ( that's where Kennedy had his conferences with the press) where the President and the press would interface. Indeed, the Kennedy press conferences were an interface of grace under pressure. A wonderful documentary on these press conferences was made in 1983, hosted by old time actor, EG Marshall ( he was Joe Kennedy sr. in Kennedy with Martin Sheen). We are with him in the very auditorium and he is telling us the story of Kennedy's relation with the press. It is titled, "Thank you, Mr. President." this was what Meriman Smith, Head reporter, would say to end the event, then that was it, no babbling of questions either respectful quiet or even applause. It's on youtube, give it watch.

He had a certain charisma which some people have said was akin to a rock star and women loved him and certainly fell for him which, as a compulsive womanizer, he took full advantage of. His was a very fascinating and complex personality formed by a childhood dominated by his older brother Joseph Jr. (whose destiny within the family was to be President until his tragic and reckless death in WWll) whose life path JFK stepped into and his life long health problems. He was a very sickly person his whole life and a few times gravely so. He was probably the most intelligent of all his brothers and sisters and he certainly had a very powerful intellect and a curious and seeking mind but the image we have of him as physically strong and vital was nothing but a mask. He lived with constant pain and the filling out of his face in comparison to his very thin younger years and his apparently tanned complexion were a result of the medication he took for his Addison's disease. He never thought he would live to be an old man. Until his last year or so in office he thought his poor health would catch up to him and keep his life short and in his last year or so he spoke often to a small number of those very close to him of being assassinated.
A very fascinating hisr]=torical figure he was and if you really want to learn about him you'll need to read more than two or three books about him, his family and his era.

The Constitution of the United States is the ark of freedom's foundation. To keep our American democracy alive, our leaders need to take their oaths and take them very seriously. The people we elect must "Support and defend, bear true faith and allegiance and preserve, protect and defend" the Constitution of the United States, "so help me God." the oath is a promise to God and fellow citizens, that must be kept. This is the only way our Republic can survive.

Pres Kennedy was taking our country down the road of peace and prosperity we the common folk lost a lot that awful day in 1963. Everything has been getting worse ever since the world of today is a corrupt, evil, chaotic mess.
