I met someone with an ordinance that stated no chickens. They bought quails instead! Quails are quieter, need less space, and the eggs are smaller. They love having the quail coop!

Love the video! Glad you get to live in a city that allows chickens, ducks, and goats!
Our city allows for landfowl (chickens, turkeys, etc), but no ducks or geese, and you have to have an acre or more to have goats.
We're better off than our sister city, who doesn't even allow chickens. 😢

I am hoping that as the homesteading movement gains in popularity that more cities will allow farm animals.

Do you live in Indianapolis? I didn't see in your bio. I know you live in a city. I was raised near Indianapolis 😊 that's why I was wondering. It looked like you are next to a big building. I'm just surprised you can have a little farm in a area like that. Most are zoned residential. I had a problem even though I lived more out in country, I was surprised it was zoned residential and they wouldn't even let me have rabbits or chicken's...I moved.😊 Thanks for talking about this, I like your idea of working with children that sounds so fun I enjoy your channel.❤

@@missannetteslittlefarminth9069 you give me hope and inspiration. I'm a 61 year old woman that lost her homestead in 2005 and wanting to restart one day soon.
Also I live in a small town in Indiana not to far from you! We are practically neighbors! 🙂

I live in NE Indiana and having any kind of livestock, even chickens, is prohibited within city limits. So I decided a couple of years ago that I have to move! Looking now for someplace else as I really do need, within my soul, to have different animals.

Thanks so much for doing this video! We have petitioned out city for a chicken allowance twice, both times the city countered with very restrictive proposals (4 chickens or less and stringent coop construction blueprints). All this became moot because it was voted down both times. I have always had a sizeable garden that gives us produce through winter (although not enough fruit)----but I think I would need a good 10 layers to be worth the cost of keeping them, in order to get at least a few eggs. As we continue to petition the city---what do you feel a reasonable number of chickens to request would be?

Consider quail. The laws/restrictions may not cover quail. Most people can tell them apart from local birds. Jumbo quail eggs are bigger and pack similar nutrients into a smaller package. It takes two jumbo eggs to make 1 chicken egg. I grow 43 in a 4x8 coop with a 2x4 nesting box. In most states they are considered game birds and HOAs don’t typically list game birds. They don’t need much space and provide meat if you want it. It has worked out for me.

Will you get more animals? Even here in the country some areas restrict the # of animals per acre…

No there are no plans in the immediate future, we have several chickens that are elderly and when they pass I may get some more ducks.
