A good friend of mine went through all that schooling to get his computer science degree, only to become a pharmacist several years later. Probably very stressful work atmosphere despite the pay. But yeah my friend doing very well as a pharmacist at Walgreens possibly semi-retired by now.
That signing bonus is nice
Getting hired by FB is literally one on a million
Obviously not everyone will get hired by FB, but I wouldn’t call it one in a million, at least not in the US. If you get a CS or related degree, practice for coding interviews, and are willing to live in US tech hubs, the chance is decent. And the chances get a lot higher once you get a few years of experience elsewhere.
That said, it is still hard, but there is a relatively clear path. It’s not some random lottery. The difficulty is probability similar to that of getting into a top university. It is hard, but not impossible.
@@ConnerArdman how would they look on people who have developed single-handedly SaaS businesses? I have a cs degree, software engineer degree but not commercial experience but if they saw my repos for the SaaS they’d see it’s like an actual company because of my SE degree (worked on enterprise projects in a team, our leader was an intern at a bank so taught us all their best practices)

@@yesyes9698 people have said that you don't really need a degree. You will likely need prior experience, getting into a FAANG company as your first job with no degree would be really difficult, not because you don't have a degree, but because they might not even give you an interview. Get some experience, then apply to higher paying jobs. Coding is learnable without college or a bootcamp, but you'll need determination and discipline, it will be hard no matter which route you take. Just don't let that discourage you if this is really what you want to do.

$8000 a month as an intern? That’s literally more than a lot of FT senior positions in developed countries. Even as a dev with 8 years’ experience you would struggle to earn that in Europe or Japan
That signing bonus would be amazing, im comfortable with country i live in, but i just wish signing bonuses would be a thing here
lol, you made more than twice as much as an Intern as I do as a senior software developer with 10 years experience
adjust for cost of living dude
In Europe for context the total compensation is around 25% of this (compared to your FB compensation), the largest reason is that we typically don't have signing, relocation, or stock compensation at all. The base pay is 40-50% of your FB one. We pay less for housing and health insurance, however.
@@coreyh9794 yes definitely, I don't pay for any health insurance but my rent is ~$800 in a non-capital city. Typically the rent is much higher in the US cities where these tech companies are based though right?
Also I don't know if this is relevant but I've heard things like this: "The average monthly premium for a Bronze ACA health insurance plan is $928 [per month]"
This is why people move to America. They will gladly take high pay and deal with the cost of living. Even a if you half his total earnings at Facebook, it’s probably worth it for most people.
@Corey H no we make way less and we might or might not pay less depending on what state you are comparing in Hungary we definitely making way less and paying way more most Hungarians now are leaving to Norway or Germany
Now I loved form hungry to Belgium and yeah it’s nicer but still places like Nevada or denvor with 0 tax are interested AF for me and base salary is higher than anything in EU

How come software engineer salaries in Australia are so pathetic?! Total compensation is maximum 180k AUD per year (for a tech lead). And house prices and life expenses are the same as in California US 😢😢
If I had to guess, the majority of the difference is just supply and demand. Most of the world's largest tech companies are in the US. There's also more VC funding for tech companies than anywhere else. Both of these create highly capitalized companies who need to hire a ton of software engineers, thus driving prices upward.
There's also some other factors at play. For example, the cost of education to actually become qualified for the job is extremely high here, driving supply down (admittedly I don't know much about the Australian university system, but it is not unusual to spend $200k+ for a bachelors degree here). There are cheaper options, but the vast majority of the highest paid software engineers have degrees from "target" schools, which tend to also be the most expensive schools.
There's also differences between countries around things like the tax system, average working hours, vacation days, parental leave, healthcare, etc. that can have pretty substantial impacts on pay, but I honestly don't know enough about Australia specifically to know if that's the case here.
Yep.. and with the amount of taxes we pay, stocking shelves at Coles looks attractive some days.

The fact that a space engineer (real engineers) with 10 years experience gets about 120k and software engineers gets a starting base salary of 110k is causing the market to be overly saturated and causing these layoffs

@@ConnerArdmancongratulations on your achievements!!! 🙌Now let me ask you a question and be honest, is it too late to start a career as a web developer at 45 year old age and be marketable after completing it? 🤔I appreciate any insights.
Pretty good for someone who can’t even accurately say the number to match what salary was displayed 👏🏼
What does $250,000 buy you in America? A typical starting salary for a software engineer in the UK was probably about £35,000 in 2019. In USD, that's not even $50,000 but you could buy a house and have a nice car for that here.
Who cares?
It varies vastly based on where in America you live. Where I live in Seattle, you probably aren't buying a house on that salary, at least not in the first few years. The median home price here is about $800k. That said, you can obviously still live incredibly comfortably. Most of the software engineers I know in Seattle live in luxury apartments, drive nice cars, go on frequent vacations, etc. You would have to try really hard (or have some huge life expense) to not save a significant portion of that income.
It depends on what you desire and, of course, timing. I was making 165k in 2020, but mortgage interest rates were at an all time low. I locked in a 2.5. Instead of buying something at $800k, I looked for something smaller as my first home and purchased at $600k, it’s now worth between $800k - 850k. Buying lower gave me a smaller mortgage and larger margin equity. Nearly 5 years later, putting $120k down gaining $200k in equity and another $100k in payment equity, when I sale I’m looking at making about $350-$400k. My salary has surpassed $200k/yr and I’ll have an amazing down payment. So, if I want to buy that million dollar home, I can do it. Before that, I worked my ass off for nearly a decade to afford a $120k down payment, so my net worth has increased drastically just from owning my home and working hard. So, you also have to consider how much you have for a down payment, interest rates, and timing. Now, I’m on a waiting game and I’m just waiting for dates to drop. I won’t even sell my home, I’m keeping it and using my cash to buy another while I rent my first home out. I’ll do that until I die and pass whatever i own to my son.
I am a psychology major trying to see other opportunities that I will like. I’m not the biggest fan of staring at a computer so idk 😢 but I love math and I feel like coding would be doable for me but please what are the other job opportunities you mentioned

I was surprised at how much you made as a Lyft intern!! I never thought about internships at Lyft. What did you in your time interning at Lyft?
Yeah pretty much every tech company has an intern program. Many of the "unicorn" companies tend to be the highest paying outside of finance, likely because they need to pay more to compete with FAANG for top talent.
I worked on an internal tool/testing framework they had developed to help make things more consistent across their microservices. Not the most "glamorous" project, but it was fairly interesting technically.

Yeah it’s pretty common in high earning fields for huge portions of compensation to be stock and other non-cash benefits. Definitely falls in the realm of things you’d expect to be taught about but never are.
And this is all in Seattle Washington. At least in tech, these numbers basically only exist in Seattle, NYC, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
This is absolute perfection. I recently read a similar book, and it was absolute perfection. "Mastering AWS: A Software Engineers Guide" by Nathan Vale

Why are sp many software engineers losing their jobs?
What college did you go to? Do you think it affected the jobs you were able to get?
The University of Washington, and absolutely it did. Going to a “target” school, makes it a lot easier. That’s not to say it would have been impossible to have the same results otherwise, but it would have been harder.
What degree did you get? Computer science?
Well, put a feather in your cap

Bruh thats such an American IT moment omg. 8000/month is more than SWE 2 get in Europe, and probably higher positions too, depending on the company
"Depending on the company" is key here. The pay is less, but when you control for companies it's not that dramatic. Facebook specifically, since that's where I worked, will pay in the range of 150k-220k for SWE 2 jobs in Europe depending on the country/role. Likewise, if you look outside of big tech companies in the US, pay is substantially lower.
Oh, but in Europe we bring regulation. 🙄
Why did you left?
starting from no experience here. would u recommend bootcamps, online classes, and IT related jobs to get started? or bachelors degree? im currently 20 years old finally finding something i actually want to learn and pursue. any advise would help from anyone thank u!
It’s not a one-size fits all answer. There’s no way anyone can really answer that but you. The commitment (time, money, etc) of a bachelors degree is far different from that of a bootcamp which is far different from that of online classes. And ultimately what is best for you just depends on your personal situation and goals.
Generally speaking though, a bachelors in CS will be the easiest way to get a development job, but it will also be the most expensive and time consuming.
A bootcamp will make it a lot harder to get a job, but it’ll also take a quarter of the time and money. It’s definitely less common, but I’ve met a few highly successful bootcamp grads. Just be wary that there are some very bad ones, do your research if you go that route. Bootcamps can also be limiting in terms of the job options compared to traditional degrees (i.e. the vast majority just focus on frontend, but if you’re into that then it’s obviously not an issue).
Self teaching online is great if you just want to learn the skill, but honestly it’s an uphill battle. I’d only really recommend that if its more for learning than a career, if its a supplement to college/bootcamp, or if other options are financially or otherwise infeasible. It just makes getting that first job waaaay harder without the credential on the resume. That said, it can also be a great place to start before committing to a bootcamp or degree program.

How were you an intern if your pay was $8,000?
Software engineering interns at "top" tech companies are paid extremely well. It's mostly just a recruiting tactic to help them get talent from target universities, but they're also not interns in the way you might be thinking about it. Interns at these companies are not getting people coffee, they're writing real production code, similar to a new junior software engineer.
I can be wrong but I think Facebook now Meta it's #1 when comes to salary
Depends on what companies you include and for what level. They’re usually up there, but there’s some smaller companies that pay a bit better in some circumstances. Also a lot hedge funds / trading firms pay absurd amounts.

Good for this guy in the video who has a FAANG job but, imo, not worth it. It’s too competitive and you are so easily replaceable.

@@cowslawwhat did you do outside of getting your degree before landing that job? currently a IT junior in college (might switch to cs last minute) trying to land an internship and having a difficult time getting a call back without any relevant experience
@@starskull8587 Personal projects are a big help. Personally, I just tried to stay relevant by keeping in touch with newer tech. Going into an internship, not much is expected experience-wise, but if you can demonstrate that you have the drive to learn new things, I'd say you have a great chance.
Even on my resume, I have "Ready and willing to learn anything" because *I* think it's the most important thing. I'm looking to switch things up in a few months (move to another location and get a beefier job), and so right now I'm just working on some fun side projects that showcase my skills in the technologies I wish to work with professionally.
Regarding languages, just get more and more used to the popular stuff first (js/ts or python), because those are more likely to be used. Then you can try out some of the languages rising in popularity (go, rust, etc.). But focus on one or two things at most, so you can prove that you are able to continue improve your skills in one area/ecosystem.
But again, looking for an internship, it's hard to say what you might be working with. My internship was pretty basic, for a very small company, and wasn't anything too complicated. There are also internships at huge tech companies with much more wholesome and mature ecosystems.
I'm kinda rambling at this point, but it's hard to give one piece of advice to get your foot through the door, cause it's different at every company. Just keep at it and always think of where you want to be and what you want to do. That way, when you begin to get tired of where you're currently at or just start to feel stagnant (my situation right now), you'll know the next step you should take. But for now, focus on proving why you'd be a good intern by proving your drive. Good luck!!

Would you need a bachelors or just associate for a path like this
I have a bachelors degree, although I wouldn’t say you 100% need one.
So i imagine most of your stock didnt vest. Therefore, your total realized compensation was arguably much lower.
The total compensation target showed in the video only counts the stock that actually vested (i.e. the stock grant was $160k but since it was only one year, only $40k vested).
After the promotion, I didn’t make much of that money (salary or stock), because I quit almost immediately after the promotion. But the amount shown as the total comp after promo is just counting how much would have vested in that next year.
In reality the pay was actually higher than this video showed, because my bonuses were above the target level, and the stock appreciated a ton 📈
How much was the rent where you were working?
I live in Seattle. You can get rent as low as $1500 or so in a decent spot, maybe lower if you have roommates. Mine’s usually been in the $2k-$3k range though, which is probably more typical for software engineers in the city.
Also during college when I was a TA my rent ranged from like $750-$1200 most of that time, because I lived in cheap university housing with roommates.
I chose Business Information Technology instead of CS, what can I expect?
That's impossible for me to answer. Your degree is just one of many factors that ultimately influence earning potential (i.e. it also depends on location, type of job pursued, other experience, interview skill, resume, work ethic, connections, risk tolerance, technical skills, non-technical skills, etc.).
Edit: Also FWIW my degree is not in computer science, it's in informatics. I just also took a lot of CS classes and was a CS teaching assistant.
