Been trying to find the exact cause to my Durango 4.7’s knock, tap, and squeak. At first I thought it was a lifter. Then the next day, it became increasingly worse with a squeak. I thought I threw a rod. So, I got on RUclips and looked up the symptoms and found your video. Let me tell you, it sounds spot on IDENTICAL! So thank you for this vid.
Your video has helped a lot. My 02 suburban just started making that noise yesterday. I didn't know what it was so I looked for videos and yours was the only one that has the actual sound of an engine running with some bad bearings. Now I gotta look for another engine. Thanks for putting this info for us to see
This is the exact noise my 1990 5.0 F150 is making and lost oil pressure. Was trying to figure out what went bad before testing into the engine. Thank you for the help!
same yo, my 03 3.8 mustang doing it, my uncle, took out the oil, never put any back in, and drove for about 45 minutes. she’s sitting at a decent 145k miles tho, just bought a new kit to rebuild everything inside the motor and the engine as a whole
My 2003 highlander did that and then mad a loud bang now the whole engine is shaking very bad and lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust and the oil is still full
I noticed this rythm but not the clanking noise. Sounds more like a throaty tractor noise. And much quieter. But it's the same rythm. I wonder if that's just typical lower engine sound
Please help. What if it starts making that noise as I turn on the ac. And as I turn it off. Most of the time it goes away but sometimes it stays. What does that mean
My 4.2 has a knock when I start the truck or very intermittent. Once in a blue moon does the engine lose power but only until I stop accelerating and press the accelerator again. I opened the hood and while running I noticed the AC compressor stop spinning and then start a few seconds later. My mechanism says it's the bearing but now I don't know. I. Believe he is going by the initial sound.
Did you ever determine what your noise was? I'm thinking I have a bad idler pulley and they tried to say I had a rod knock but power steering pump is working intermittently on my Sienna. I'm going to try to test those pulleys this week because that is where the bad bearing noise is coming from to me. Thanks for any suggestions..
2008 Mercury Grand Marquis 4.6L engine. 129k miles. Car has a slight ticking noise on cold start. Noise fades after 2 to 3 minutes of idling. I don't think it's the cat or the lifters. I had a mechanic friend look at it and he says it's bad bearings. I don't have the money to do a bearing/rod replacement. Will marvel Mystery Oil help? My mechanic friend recommended it in lieu of a repair.
Could this noise be almost gone when the engine heats up? Or is it something else? I hear knocking noise only when accelerating on cold engine, and after 15-20 minutes it's 99% gone
If it sounds more like a click/tap, probably valves not getting oil for a few minutes. Also, check your fuel type and octane requirements for the engine if it only happens on acceleration.
I have a different issue... Bottom end knocks only after adding oil and filter when changing the oil. After 2 or 3 seconds then i get oil pressure and knock goes away. No other time does it knock and no lifter noise. I went with 20w50 weight with high zinc. Btw it's a 455 engine. Any thoughts out there why the noise only happens when i drain the oil for an oil change then add the new oil and filter and start the car and it knocks for a couple seconds then i get oil pressure? with the engine quiet as can be.
Start the car with the key, but don't let it catch/Start. As in just the engine turning over without it actually running...this will make the oil pump work to pump the oil so your not dry starting with no oil pressure for the few seconds like you noted.

That question would take a long time to answer properly. I'll tell you this, if you rod bearings are bad it's a good beat you'll need a lot more than that. May be time to look into a new or used engine.
If you’re going in that deep, replace all of them. If you’re in a rush and cheap, do just the one rod bearing. I’ve heard that some rods with the piston can be removed from the bottom, but I’m not buying it. Putting one back in from the bottom would seem impossible. Generally you would pull the pan, find the offending rod, then pull the head above it, take the rod cap off, then cover the sharp edges of the rod big end, and push it out from the bottom. With a dowel or a broom handle to such, not anything metal. If you scratch the bore you’re f’d.

Not a RUclipsr at all so I don’t have a page but I did record vehicle while I was under good tying to figure out wtf the sound is, you have the closed exact sound to mines! Buddy... that knock is a spun bearing.. You just cant replace the bearings.. When a rod bearing spins it wipes out the bearing seat in the cap and the rod.. Meaning a new bearing will no longer fit. It wont hold... Also the corresponding crankshaft journal is likely been ground to a diameter beyond acceptable for a new too much clearance a more important damage that would destroy a new bearing in minutes of run time.. Same applies for the mains.. If a main spins crank journal is too fucked to accept a new bearing.. The main bearing caps will be wiped out from bearing spin. Mean the main bearing also swiped the. Bearing seats in the block too.. Replacing bearings wint fix his problem or will rebuilding the engine. Thats why he said he will need a new block.. Understand the science of crank bearing failure before making a suggestion.
That is exactly how my 2007 Cadillac DTS sounds like...I was going to still do a quick inspection of the bearings and crankshaft...but I guess I better be ready to buy another engine.
@@johnfloyd2551 block isn't necessarily trashed, machine shops can align bore a block, and give different size bearings, you can't just say every spun bearing will be unrepairable, it depends on how much damage is done, sometimes you can get away with just replacing the bearing and polishing the crank, normally rods that go egg shaped would take a massive amount of heat and the rod hammering depending on if the engine siezed up vs knocked until it broke, making sure rod cap and rod surfaces are clean from melted aluminum, always make sure when replacing bearings that they are the same size because it could have been rebuilt at some point with under or oversize bearings, what causes egg shaped rods would be from people reusing rod bolts, when a bearing is spun those bolts stretch like hell, and lose its clamping force and the ability to give a new bearing it's proper "crush" always use new bolts/hardware especially tty bolts is a must!
Is it possible for rod knock to be intermittent? I've got a tapping noise but it only does it for about 3 seconds then stops for about 7 seconds. It's very regular.
Sounds like a possible evap purge valve. Does it come back after 7 seconds? It's a tapping noise right? Not a knocking noise? Is it on the vehicle shown in your profile pic?

Its possible. You gotta pin point where the noise is coming from. Once you are sure were the noise is coming from, then you may have to tear down to point of failure. Of coarse its not as simple as just tearing things apart. You gotta know what your looking for, take measurements and look for abnormal wear. If you aren't comfortable doing this and don't feel confident enough that you'll make a correct diagnosis then I'd suggest having a reputable technician diagnose it for you. Tearing down and engine is a big can of worms to open up. I don't think I could walk you through all that here on youtube.
Well, it depends on what exactly is causing the noise in your engine. The vehicle in the video needed an engine replacement. Not sure what is causing your noise.
is there a difference in sound between rod and lifters my car is making a tapping sound not nearly as bad as that one and it comes and goes and while it's idling the sound goes completely away
Yes there is a difference. I'm sure there are a lot of videos that feature either of these problems here on RUclips. I've got a lifter tap video on my channel your welcome to watch.
Sound of a main bearing gone bad. My sister has a 5.4 F150 and it sounded exactly like this. Ended up throwing two rods because of it on the way to get the engine replaced. Bad main bearing leads to low resistance for oil to flow, so oil flows there, starving other bearings of oil. Rods proceed to fly lmao
My car hasn't threw a rod yet but I'm going to replace the rod bearings on my charger and see what happens may have to sand down the crankshaft if it scratches with a 400 grit wet and dry sandpaper I'ma order assembly lube and all that
My opel corsa comfort line 1.4 ut has the same sound which take to a professional Machanic the sound appear s when press the cluch course i change cluch kid an cluch realises bearing but sound still there's no changes until today
It all depends on how you want to slice it. In my opinion, if it's a spun bearing, it's best to replace the engine. Some may disagree. Typically you can't just change a rod bearing. The crank usually needs to be turned, machined, also.
I hear something similar to my 94 f150 when I accelerate?? Goes away when take foot off pedal like it’s low on oil? Checked oil level and it’s full?? Any suggestions? Oil needle is okay level.
I got steam rolling out my engine and heavy knocking i just cleaned the air throttle (which was hella gunked,) and it doesnt die now but man that noise sounds like crap
spun bearing.. it got worn to the point that one slide over the other when turning. cleaning the motor, replacing the bearings and changing the oil pump will more than likely fix the problem.
There's more to it then that. You gotta remember the crank is probably damaged too. So you will at least need to resurface the crank. You may have to replace it....and more
i got a 4.7 v8 on a 2003 dodge durango took it to 2 places 1 said a barring and the other took off my belt off started the motor and still heard the sound they said it was a rod but 4.7 v8 dont have rods they got lifters so how do i really fine out with out tearing a motor apart
All 4 stroke gas powered engines have rods, aka connecting rods. I’m guessing the guy was referring to a connecting rod bearing. But, the only way to be sure is exploratory surgery. I would suggest having a well trained, seasoned technician do this for you.
i know that just because i am woman i am not that dumb and yrs some said connecting rod bearing i am just trying to save money i did change thermost in it my self my father did teach me something but not all what gets me there was oil in it good oil pressure and all i did was go 25 miles and it started knocking so this fucken bugs the shit out of me i sold my car to keep my husband dodge because he in jail long story and here in pa need 4x4 drive and have 5 yr old to take care of so money tight and my job soon starts so i need wheels and hate my father inlaw pick up truck so to make it short is the motor junk or just buy a cheep car
Yes. But, this engine, due to metal throughout the engine, will probably need a lot more than just bearings. Also, the crank probably sustained damage due to the bearing failure so, it will likely need to be turned or replaced.
My nephews g35 started knocking like this so I bought a 300$ crashed g35 and swapped motors, it wasn't easy as I dont have a lift or a shop so a big oil mess spill and days later car is back on the road running great again with a used engine and now I have a spare transmission just sitting here and a engine less crashed up g35
So on New Years I was being a dumbass doing donuts in my car and it turned off had to get it towed my mechanic is coming on Saturday to check it out It sounds like it could be the rod bearing but people have told me it’s the engine it’s a 07 Infiniti g35 cars a fucken beast I really don’t wanna sell it how much should I be expecting to pay for this????

Did u ever find out how many rod bearings were bad in that motor ?
Sound of a main bearing gone bad. My sister has a 5.4 F150 and it sounded exactly like this. Ended up throwing two rods because of it on the way to get the engine replaced. Bad main bearing leads to low resistance for oil to flow, so oil flows there, starving other bearings of oil. Rods proceed to fly lmao
My car hasn't threw a rod yet but I'm going to replace the rod bearings on my charger and see what happens may have to sand down the crankshaft if it scratches with a 400 grit wet and dry sandpaper I'ma order assembly lube and all that
Did your rods look fine when u went to change ur bearings ?
I have a 2012 camaro rs and it has 79,000 on it and it is doing the same thing can you just rebuild the motor with out having to replace it???
Of coarse you can!
Ok cause the dealership is trying to tell me I need a whole new motor
Well it may be better and more cost effective. Takes a lot of labor to rebuild an engine.
2012 is pretty new for a rod bearing issue. How often did you change the oil?
My opel corsa comfort line 1.4 ut has the same sound which take to a professional Machanic the sound appear s when press the cluch course i change cluch kid an cluch realises bearing but sound still there's no changes until today
Did the engine misfire as a result of bad bearings?
No
Is the engine rebuild able at this point or not?
If it was then it wasn't fixed my me. Guy towed it away.
My Car started to make this noise but only when it is driven can anyone help
I had same noise. Was a piston missing have the skirt !!
Well... It was a spun bearing.
Mine sounds like this, but the noise goes away at higher rpm. Do I need to change a bearing or just throw it away?
It all depends on how you want to slice it. In my opinion, if it's a spun bearing, it's best to replace the engine. Some may disagree. Typically you can't just change a rod bearing. The crank usually needs to be turned, machined, also.
Can I just replace the main bearing as a temporary fix
Typically no...
Could it possibly be the barring?
Say what?
Does it get quiet when you accelerate or does it get louder?
Mines get louder
Mine gets quiet but initial start up sound so rough
I hear something similar to my 94 f150 when I accelerate?? Goes away when take foot off pedal like it’s low on oil? Checked oil level and it’s full?? Any suggestions? Oil needle is okay level.
Maybe a pulley or something? Not sure.
Does it hesitate to accelerate like at 50+ mph? Mine makes a small noise at 2100-2800 rpm
Check the octane requirements.
I got steam rolling out my engine and heavy knocking i just cleaned the air throttle (which was hella gunked,) and it doesnt die now but man that noise sounds like crap
Sounds like a poopy situation 💩.
Im not worried its still not on the fan
Was this a main bearing or a rod bearing ?
Your answer is in the title of the video.
Thank you so much! This helped me my SE-R is doing the same noise! I posted it on my page so you guys can hear it Ima start with checking it out
Mines has the same nosie is this a easy fix
@@williamfloyd2080 not at all
Sorry for your loss bro se r is a sweet ride. Love all vqs lol
Did you save to motor or got a new one?
I'm not sure what the owner did with it. I didn't fix it though.
This is exactly the sound my car is making, EXACTLY
I'm sorry.
Thats the same noise my caddilac made take a look at my vid pls so does that mean new engine ?
could it be rod knock if u only hear it some times
It could
@@BarboursAutoHelp thanks man
This is easily repaired using gaffa tape
What is the chirping noise supposed to be?
Spinning bearing
spun bearing.. it got worn to the point that one slide over the other when turning. cleaning the motor, replacing the bearings and changing the oil pump will more than likely fix the problem.
@@baleriotorres6160 you really think that will solve it ?
I would suggest having a well trained, seasoned technician do this for you.
i know that just because i am woman i am not that dumb and yrs some said connecting rod bearing i am just trying to save money i did change thermost in it my self my father did teach me something but not all what gets me there was oil in it good oil pressure and all i did was go 25 miles and it started knocking so this fucken bugs the shit out of me i sold my car to keep my husband dodge because he in jail long story and here in pa need 4x4 drive and have 5 yr old to take care of so money tight and my job soon starts so i need wheels and hate my father inlaw pick up truck so to make it short is the motor junk or just buy a cheep car
plus i still had good power and no engine light came on
Someone is going to have to diagnose this all the way for you. It may require taking the engine apart.
ok well thanks for replying
My Camaro 2SS had a similar knocking noise it was very loud and running ruff
What end up happening to your car ?
What did it end up being? I'm having the same issue with my Camaro
Chevy malibu did same noise a week later wouldnt turn over anymore just crank 😢
can you replace the bearings?
Yes. But, this engine, due to metal throughout the engine, will probably need a lot more than just bearings. Also, the crank probably sustained damage due to the bearing failure so, it will likely need to be turned or replaced.
He could but it'd probably be cheaper to just get a new engine, depending on prices.
Clean the engine. Then replaced the rod bearings and polish the crank. All these should do.
Exactly what I was looking for
Sounds like 2 people playing Patty Cake
Thank you. Never actually did hear one (and that one sounds real bad).
Oh you should hear mine then. Lol. Puts that to shame, mine knocks alot louder than that.. ☹️
Chris Hansen were u able to fix the bearings and it be fine ?
Chris Hansen , did the sound get louder when u accelerated, or did it speed up and disappear with acceleration?
sounds like a 6.5 detroit diesel lol
Forreal tho , it happened to my 4.3 vortec still drove it 5 hours . It sounded like a loud diesel going up hills
Part whatever you can and scrap it to make some money back.
My toyota made that sound .. and it was due to my Spark Plugs not being plugged in all the way .. I
that can do it too, mine is rod knock, so here comes the rod bearings
How did u fix it
I usually recommend engine replacement.
Hi. What if I only hear the rattling noise when the engine is between 1000 and 2000 rpms. From standstill or going up hills? Do you think bearings? Thank you.
Its possible. Never hurts to have a tech look at it.
Mine sounds the same except that it won’t start. Just cranks and clanks
Loss of oil pressure?
Yea, due to loss of oil through the hole in the oil pan.
Thanks for the video. Does this problem cause the engine to misfire?
I guess if it got bad enough....possibly maybe.
Not exactly.
BUT it will seize the engine eventually,
I’m having the same problem. BUT NO LEAK
I have same issue with optima 2013 EX GDI when I change the Oil.
The issue is that it’s a Kia there made to not last long
Sounds like a completely normal diesel. I don't see the problem here.
97 s10 decided to start making this noise yesterday, I hope I can fix her >=\
I have semelar sound on 4.3 v6 and the same same setioation that the oil was leaking from the oil pan bolt until the engine run without oil
Wich part i could have to replace? Just bearings of the rods and the crank?
It all depends on exactly what all is wrong with the engine. Can’t answer that just from the limited information I have about your vehicle.
Tofek Zoabi bearings and piston rings first of the cylinders aren’t scratched up and the crank still looks good if it’s worth it I’d say get a used engine from a junkyard I think there only about $1,000-2,000 each
@@howtowithelizabeth7513 LKQ Salvage they’re like $385.
Same here with a GMC Yukon.
Lol mine was doing this and it went away randomly... not sure what it was
It wasn't this if it went away.
@@BarboursAutoHelp yeah I have no idea what it was. It’s always had a decently loud ticking noise in the 3rd cylinder, but that one cylinder also had a burnt ignition coil and a spark plug that was covered in something, not sure what, so I think that cylinder is just problematic lol. Still ticks but no knocking
Pretty sure that’s what my car engine sounds like this morning when I went to start it at 4:30 in the morning before work
Ahhhh I call this sound the criglist anthem
My focus is knocking I think but it’s really fast and quick
Sorry to hear that.
Trash it.....this happened to me to ight 383 on the way in next week!!!!!
I have same noise , no oil pressure light, just did it at 40km
What if the sound is only heard at high rpms? Like < 3000
It means change the oil and baby the engine. Check your oil regularly. Also, 3k rpms isn't high.
@@UnrealOG137 It is for a diesel

That baby is done.
Just happened to me outta the blue yesterday, car just died i was shockedd cus i have taken perfect care of that engine from day one but i guess it was bout to die at 260000 miles
Gotta check ya oil
I've got 347.000 miles on my 94 Trans am LT1 engine, bought it new. 3000 mile oil changes. Runs and sounds like new.
I had the same, but had correct oil quantity
Yup my Audi A4 sounds exactly like this
:(
I have a sound coming from the flexplate area , it’s so loud that it caused my ears to ring after listening to it for half a minute, pull out the pan and there were metal chunks but everything looked fine
I have a 06 magnum
Sounds like a washy machine
Exactly what mine sounded like this morning after an oil change. What's weird is that the last time I heard it it was barely a tapping sounded like the top and after the oil change it sounds exactly like this.
Me too like yesterday smh
@@Conkobonko477 it was a cylinder 8 rod bearing that eventually chewed up the crankshaft so ended up doing a full rebuild.
@@gatgat01 how much it costed you ? What you replaced ?
@@5300trilla about $500 in parts. Crankshaft,crankshaft bearings,rod bearings,piston rod,all gaskets.

I have the same exact problem. Any idea on how much it would cost to fix?
No, Sir.

It could be between $600--$1000 to fix.
Drop the oil pan and replace the bearing clean it emery cloth only don't use sand paper and get the same Bering put in and the car will go another 120k miles
Yea, not that simple. The crank would probably have to be turned. There isn't any way the crank in the video isn't severely damaged. Too much for Emory cloth.
