Im 4 years old and Im Marching my 3rd season on snare for SCV. Once I was born, they made me center snare and I have won 2 I&E performances and 20 dci world championships. After that, I marched Clarinet for the Bluecoats. Lmao
"If you only have a few pair of socks... um... your gonna die" XD XD XD EVEN IN HIGH SCHOOL MY BAND DIRECTOR SAYS THAT If you don't wear black socks he would duct tape your legs with black tape
Never marched DCI, but I’ve packed for deployments in the Army. This is a great video. You’ve included a lot of great advice for rooks. Kudos to you for doing this video.
A tip for putting everything in your pack- but things in bags and stand them up on end. This lets you make neat compartments that you can get to without having to dig through layers of stuff. Another thing I like to do is grab a fitted sheet and put it over my bus seat so I can wash it
another couple tips are to roll your clothes instead of folding, it makes packing more compact and you don't have to dig for things, and when i auditioned for the scouts in 2010 they said to bring enough underwear and socks and rehearsal clothes to last about 2 weeks. have an extra of every "consumable" like pencils, hygiene items etc
my band director uses a lot of tricks he learned back in his drum corp days (go cavies) but its crazy to see like a little pvc tube because we use those everyday.
can attest to sunglasses being important i'm not in drum corps, this incident actually happened to me in my high school band camp this summer i lost my sunglasses one evening, and i didnt have time the next day (or the next, next day) to find them, so i went two whole days of rehearsal with no sunglasses. i ended up sunburning my eyes, and it was incredibly painful. i couldn't see really at all, especially outside, it felt like everything was insanely bright, my eyes were super red; i had to go to the nurse in the afternoon three times to get two different kinds of eye drops, it was pretty bad. what made it worse is that i was on snare, and those kevlar heads just reflect all of the light back into your eyes *use sunglasses in rehearsal*
One thing I would recommend (I haven't march but hopefully will for 2018) is the Windcatcher Airpad 2+. Its probably the most compact and easily inflatable/deflatable mattress I can think of. I can only imagine space is tight, and it would be a good call
love scouts! i was in santa clara vanguard played never walk alone in thunder and lightning in tennessee because show was rained out it was life changing. and was so happy scouts won dci in 1988 - we didnt have cell phones lol or the cool compact sleeping bags or the clips would have been good to have anyway great youtube
*I'm already planning on trying to get into dci and I'm only twelve I'll problably forget all of this by the time I even get out of high school but I'm watching this anyways*
You don't need to be out of high school. In the year 2020, I am a freshman in highschool contracted in a drum corps (Compass DBC) and it is gonna be litty.
One thing that’s really important that I didn’t take into account my rookie season is rewearing shorts and shirts. I overpacked like crazy and brought about 14 white t-shirts, 5 black shorts for ensemble, and 5 sections shorts, as well as two shower towels. You will likely end up rewearing shirts and shorts no matter what, so just pack light. Maybe 3 or so pairs of section shorts or ensemble shorts depending on what your corps requires as well as maybe 6 or so white t shirts. You will only need one shower towel as long as you dry it adequately. Do NOT skimp on underwear (if you’re in an all male corps this seems to be different, so disregard) and do NOT skimp on socks. If you’re a brass player, you may want to bring a small bottle of vitamin E with you to put on your lips after a day of destroying your shops (please don’t go in the sun with this, your lips will burn). Also remember that with things such as aloe and vitamins, try to keep bottles small as it will get annoying fast when you have to tote around big bottles across the country. Hope this can help someone!
TGerald_ YEP it's really not a big deal, everyone just wants to be clean and get out. The girls are always supportive of each other's with sharing and what not but the boys bathrooms can get pretty crazy but that's all part of the bonding with your corps members. DRUM CORPS
I know this comment was a long time ago, but I had the same exact thoughts as you. “You get COMPLETELY naked with a bunch of random strangers in a really weird shower.......?” And the answer is yes, you do. How I got over my fear of doing it was at my first audition camp at Regiment this year, I just felt so tired and dirty that I just said screw it and went in, because I wanted to get clean and turns out, that’s all everyone else wants too, you can just have a chill conversation with the dudes around you and get clean at the same time. I have never felt more relieved than after a shower after a long day of rehearsals, helps you sleep better too! Hopefully this helps if you’re auditioning for DCI. I’ll be marching mello at phantom this year!
I’m 14 and march top bass in dca and pretty soon I’ll start marching snare at bluecoats and this rly helped thx also do you know Donnie Ross? He works at scouts and he was my director at Capcity
weekend audition camps at intervals between bimonthly and biweekly in the winter and spring that accelerate close to summer, then spring training for two weeks in june right before tour
So, I just want some tips on auditioning and what to practice. I'm going for a DCA Corps first. I'm auditioning for Atlanta CV. I'm not able to afford the audition packet yet, but I will soon. So, what should I practice?
Hey man, first off, I've marched with CV in 17 and 19. Practice playing on the move, and practice playing loud. That advice goes for most corps, also start getting in shape now, dont wait.
a lot of high schoolers in my band go to jersey surf, because they typically are very open to high schoolers. i suggest auditioning for the drum corps you want to get into, but also into a less strict/more flexible drum cops incase you don’t get in and still want to do it! have fun!
pretty dumb question, but how many bags can you bring? can you take several trips? I don't wanna be the kid who everyone waits on because he has like 8 bags, but with all the stuff listed I don't think I can fit it in like 4 bags
It feels like theres not enough shorts in all the videos and lists I've seen about packing. If laundry block is every 2 weeks or so, do you wear a pair of shorts for 3 days? Do they not get pretty gross?
in drumline myself, snare i’ve seen a lot of people put their fanny pack around their drum, but we do also have a lot of stuff attached to our harnesses
Hey umm I know this is really late compared to when you released this video, but did you get your trumpet when you joined? or did you already have it or buy it before?
Wow, that seems like it would be a giant headache having to keep up with all that stuff. Also, how is it in the world we live in now still OK for there to be multiple corps that don't allow women? I'm surprised DCI hasn't changed that.
Shade Miller Yeah, I figured that. And I'm not saying it should be. I'm just surprised in the climate we're in that there isn't women on the Cavs, or whoever.
Shade Miller I don't either. I'm just surprised that the liberal women's groups haven't raised more hell about it. The big deal to them is it gives women less chances to march in DCI all because their not welcomed at the sausage party. Personally, I'd have to be around women. No way could I just look at dudes all summer long knowing that the next bus over in Phantom, Bluecoats, or SCV they'll have beauties twirling the flags, playing trumpet, or in the pit.
for a lot of people that I've heard that are in cavs and scouts is that the love the experience that they get there without having females to worry about. I don't know if i agree with it but to me it's their decision.

Colleen O'Donnell my band director said once that he would spray paint our legs
Ours was white socks 🙄
that’s great! i’m telling my bd
I had that exact same fanny pack in 16. Met some random dude in San Antonio with the same one and we had a bro moment
Everyone loves a bro-ment.

I was in boy scouts as well and therefore had one of those self-inflating mats, I can confirm they are perfect for those gym floors

the only thing i noticed about this video is that your floor looks like rice

I’m marching scouts this year. I was inspired by you to audition. Thanks for the tips and RUclips videos.
Thanks so much for this, so may tips my corps doesn't put up anywhere

THANK YOU! Marching for the first time this year in open class and this is super duper helpful. Your a lifesaver.
He says great so much I’m beginning to think this is a commercial for a certain kellogs cereal.
Awesome video and can't wait to watch your performance. Good Luck!
Hey man I got contracted for my first corps! I’m super excited
Jack AdilleVlogs same! Which corpse??
Bernardo Rocha 7th regiment!

How do you use the breathing tube?
You put it in between your teeth to open up your jaw to take in a good amount of air while doing long tones for just breathing
you should get a solar powered portable charger, it's really useful.
Do you think you could do a how- to pack all these things video
JustTanner638 lol

As a trumpet player, what mouthpieces do you use on tour? Or is it more of a personal thing
Most of us use a Bach 3C
What months do drum corps practice? I know that they go on tour and perform over the summer but do they practice during school months?
Most world class corps have monthly weekend camps during the schoolyear (only 6 or so) and then start all-days during the summer.
weekend audition camps at intervals between bimonthly and biweekly in the winter and spring that accelerate close to summer, then spring training for two weeks in june right before tour
So, I just want some tips on auditioning and what to practice. I'm going for a DCA Corps first. I'm auditioning for Atlanta CV. I'm not able to afford the audition packet yet, but I will soon. So, what should I practice?

I marched with a sophomore at Boston Crusaders this past summer. And I know there was a 16 year old in the Bluecoats. Go for it!

lordtacoz how does your schedule work with move ins?
This is GREAT!
Gotta love how he brought hair clippers to scouts in 2017 haha
3:41 what is the breathing tube for?
Breathing ;) haha we use it for breathing gym stuff
Do the scouts not have instruments that they give to you for the tour?
Yes.
We have Corps horns
Austin Armstrong how much is the fee all together for the corps?
Austin Armstrong what Corp did you go to
MusicLover 915 scouts
Hey so what exactly did you mean by putting your towel on that clip? That is kinda confusing because towels don't have hooks?
Take a sip of beer every time he says “great” lol
pretty dumb question, but how many bags can you bring? can you take several trips? I don't wanna be the kid who everyone waits on because he has like 8 bags, but with all the stuff listed I don't think I can fit it in like 4 bags
Found this video randomly. Follow you on IG and love your posts
What exactly are the bungee cords for? How many?
It feels like theres not enough shorts in all the videos and lists I've seen about packing. If laundry block is every 2 weeks or so, do you wear a pair of shorts for 3 days? Do they not get pretty gross?
Unless you freeball, your shorts don't get nasty very quickly and are still fine (relatively speaking) after a few days
Question what if your in Drumline you cant wear a fanny pack because of the harness?
They have their stuff attached to their harness
Austin Armstrong wow thanks for reasponding I love your channel
in drumline myself, snare
i’ve seen a lot of people put their fanny pack around their drum, but we do also have a lot of stuff attached to our harnesses

I have the same toothbrush
I remember my tour pack, I lost it day of finals 😂
Are u supposed to fit all of that in that suitcase and backpack
9:29 I have the same pillow at my house not even kidding
DUDE I HAVE THOSE SAME SANDALS LOOOL I WEAR THEM IN MY HOUSE EVERY DAY
Whats a breathing tube?
It’s what we use to expand our breath capacity. We do breathing exercises with them in our mouths to keep an open airway
Austin Armstrong omfg I thought you wernet gonna reply but thanks.
Imma join a dc soon but idk...I'm kinda scared uk:/
I feel ya. I’m hoping to audition in the next couple years, and I’m a little nervous, too.
Yo we have the same tooth brush
did you march with Chad Mirkovich?
Sure did! His nickname is CaveMan
Austin Armstrong nice he was my favorite visual instructor that I had
7:20 thats for the dryer😂
7:51 Wait, but don’t they give you your own instrument?? Why would you need your own?
