    I used to use ThredUp quite a bit. Now I tend to use Poshmark the most. I know my size in some brands of shoes, jackets, etc. so I just search for those brands and add them to my Likes. More often than not, the seller will make me an offer I can't refuse. The main downside it there are no returns so you do have to really know what you're looking for but I've been able to get Dansko shoes for as low as $12. I admire you're ability to really analyze what you want and keep it so simple. I hope someday my wardrobe will be as well curated as yours.

    I use woolite and wash in cool water. I don't use a top loading washer as the agitation can stretch the sweater out. I use a front load washer as it is very gentle. I have wool sweaters that are about six years old. Wool sweaters are great if you care for them properly. Make sure they are real wool without synthetic materials. I love olive green wool sweaters.

      Thanks/you're welcome/of course! I've never had much luck thrifting clothes (ok, when I was in middle school and high school, I was all about it, but that passion faded when I streamlined things), but ThredUp has removed most of the guess work. As I don't shop often nor do I really want to be in stores in the first place, going to thrift stores often enough to find the items I actually want and need is pretty daunting. Being able to do the same thing online, from the comfort of home and without the risk of repeated disappointment is a complete game changer though!

Like you, I used to have over two hundred articles of clothing maybe? Thanks. I'd watch your episodes no matter how often you posted. I really like the items you've chosen. I, like you, have very specific tastes when clothes shopping. I always have trouble finding pants though and I always need to try them on first because so many brands have changed their designs and the measurements are off a lot of times. I think everyone in China has a measuring tape that is inaccurate. I usually go to thrift shops to find my pieces because that's the budget, but now pants are an issue. I can't find a pair to save my life. But once I find a pair it will be like finding gold.

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  5 лет назад +2

      It can be hard enough to find pants that fit even when not thrifting, so best of luck with your search! I totally hear you about size variation. American Eagle jeans used to fit me consistently in a size 2, and then they changed their fit model, which made me a 0, but the knees down still didn't fit. I'm all for size inclusion, but that shouldn't mean vanity sizing and inconsistency. : /

    This winter will be the first one in a few years that I have cause to wear regular clothes during the week instead of just my work uniform (taking a class 2x/week). I’m intrigued to see how my thoughts about my cold weather wardrobe and lack thereof shape up and I will try to take your thoughtful approach to filling any gaps! I’m sitting around 26 items myself but I have many many items that really should be retired this season. I primarily thrift or make my clothing so I need to think way ahead on replacements. And as far as shoes go I exclusively wear my Bean boots fall & winter but that may be too “warm” for you.

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  5 лет назад +1

      Ohhh, my heart, making your own clothes sounds so romantic. Major props for that. I'm not sure what your uniform entails, but, assuming it's not scrubs (and, if you wear Bean boots all winter, I'm guessing it's not scrubs) or something but a uniform you've chosen, you have an opportunity to add some variety but not necessarily a need to. I mean, YOLO, totally do what you want, but you could also be the envy of your classmates by showing off that you have a well honed uniform. I also have considered/love the look of duck boots, but I don't think they're a good everyday option that would go unnoticed on heavy rotation where I live. Good luck with whatever you decide for your wardrobe, and good luck with your class!

    Better sweater care, soak sweater in cold water in a sink with
    Eucalan wool wash. Don’t rub. Remove from soaking, don’t wring it out. Fold in half, and then lay on a large towel. Roll the towel with the sweater inside, pushing gently to squeeze out the water. A good wool sweater can last for years. I have one going on 5 years, still looks new.

    I never buy black clothing items that are 100% cotton. No matter what you do, they will defiantly fade and do it quickly. I like your black jeans. I am very happy for you that were able to find the sweaters you needed in the colors and style you wanted. ThreadUp sounds like a good resource for previously owned clothing. I might look into them at a later date. Lastly, I wish you good luck in finding the shoes you need. Get well soon. ( :

    What a great refresh. I too get to like something and will repurchase it. I must not understand something because I like fabric mixes and think the clothes stay nice looking. A 100% cotton sweater will fade and fray over time, what am I missing?

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  5 лет назад

      I'm not sure that I understand the question. On the one hand, there is the "cool vs warm" concept that I outline in the separate video. Give that a watch if you haven't already. On the other, yes, clothing wears out, and I think it's down to personal preference and the type of wear that dictates whether or not a given person will continue wearing it. If you already mix cool and warm items (which is totally do-able), that could mean you are more flexible about incorporating items that have a bit of wear and character to them.

    It astounds me how in 30 minutes I can purge a ton of stuff, and still have 5 times the number of items left in my closet and drawers. Honestly, I'm not interested in having a 20-30 item wardrobe, but I am VERY interested in reducing my possessions to a level that's reasonable and manageable given my lifestyle and the climate in which I live. Your level of simplicity is inspiring, and your videos are helping me to think about colors and styles that make me look and feel my best. For example, I officially gave up the last of my shorts - I just don't like to wear them, and I much prefer wearing skirts/dresses in the hot weather, and I ditched the brights and pastels for more muted tones that look better on me. Anyway, with those thoughts in mind, I just went through everything and filled two bags to donate and one bag for trial separation. Those items are things I love, but I've had a year of accident and illness that have greatly reduced my ability to move around, and now I've gained weight. I'm on the mend and ready to get rid of the extra fluff that is making a few (ok several) items too snug for comfort. And I'm setting a date on my calendar for the last week of the year to do another pass. Thanks for sharing your approach to minimalism!

      Sorry you've been unwell, but glad you're on the mend and using this time to streamline other areas of your life! It sounds to me like you're on the right track. grey and light blue (like your new shirt) go very well together, would you not consider some grey dress pants? You could get a lot more different looks with them and what you have in your wardrobe

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  5 лет назад +1

      Grey is a tricky color on me. Solid greys tend to wash me out, and I look better in saturated colors, so the greys I have tend to have a little variation in them. So far, I've used grey for outerwear instead of actual wardrobe pieces to give me a bit of contrast. I could possible do a charcoal or navy pant. I want a coordinating blazer to go with the next non-black pant I buy so I can have a suit, so it's kind of a question of "Do I want a navy suit, or a grey suit?" Long, winding response, sorry.

      I have worn my nicer, navy sleeveless top and black pants to both weddings and office holiday parties. I also find that getting my hair done and throwing on a pair of diamond stud earrings instantly elevates my look. Hi I have been enjoying your videos. I too am very ocd about my belongings. I have gotten my closet down to 32 items which is all year around items not including my jackets and coats. I minimized those items also and have gotten them down to what I feel is comfortable for me. When I watched your videos I was like oh my goodness 25 items thats not much but as I got my clothes down to 32 I thought after analyzing that yes I believe even small amount of clothes is actually duable. I did the same with make up. Now purses is another story. I have 8 bags. Now naturally I am a handbag person and I love my bags . I got them down to 8 and feel I cannot at this moment do any less. How are u doing on your bag collection? Last time I saw video you got them down just a few. Thanks for videos.

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  5 лет назад +3

      32 is great! I had 30 items before my last declutter, and the only reason I got rid of those items is that they were too worn or shrunken to continue to wear them--otherwise I'd still have them! I'm not actually trying to get down to a particular number. When I first started out (i.e. I dropped from 118 to 50), hitting a low number seemed attractive. Having some low number of items was like being able to fit everything into a smaller and smaller mental box. But after adjusting to this level of clothing in my wardrobe, the number has lost its appeal. It's like, "Yeah, I know I can do it now, but what pieces do I really want and how will they work for my lifestyle?" Re: handbags: I have four but I only really use two of them. Don't beat yourself up over eight bags. Eight is a completely respectable number, and, if you do want to continue paring them down, it's good to already have a variety of options so you can use them to practice and hone your style. Good luck!

      I actually have been diagnosed, but my compulsions, at least my obsessive ones, are not related to minimalism, so I probably should have used different language in that particular context. That said, OCD affects approximately 1 in 40 adults in the US (according to the ADAA; just did a quick Google search), so it's not uncommon and there are probably many more people who have obsessive compulsions that are not diagnosed because they don't have the resourced to have it classified by a professional. I'm all for being cognizant and respectful of mental health issues, but I think it's equally important to recognize that (1) these are imperfect classification systems that have and continue to evolve over time and (2) not everyone has the money to be officially diagnosed, diagnosis doesn't really mean anything, and we shouldn't negate the experiences of others if someone in a white coat hasn't checked a particular box.

    I have the exact same Banana Republic sweater! The Italian wool, correct? It has a line down the middle also. I bought 2- one in dark charcoal and one in off white. Something strange is that the white one shrunk and fits uncomfortably tight, but the dark one loosened up a bit, and I wash them exactly the same. If I rebuy I'm going up a size too in any wool sweater!

      YES! I love the little line detail in the front and the seaming on the sides. Banana Republic, if you are reading this, please revert to the old style next year!

    chelsea boots in a cool brown colour could work with the cream and navy sweater maybe 🤔
    also two items that held up the best for me: grana sweatshirt and for whatever reason topshop jeans(like ive tried all kinds of brands and these hold up the best!)

      That is true, and I forgot to mention that. For me though, with how little I shop, it's kind of still a loss to have my money tied up somewhere else. That said, their prices are so good it would never be that much money.

    Love your videos! They are so inspiring. Thank you for the work that you do.
    What are you using to make the overview/layout of your wardrobe at the end of the video? Is it Photoshop or another app? It looks great and I would love to know how to make my own! Maybe you could show us in another video? Thank you!

      I use Photoshop and Illustrator, but I also have the stylebook app on my phone. If you want to make a big image like I've included in this video, you could always use Google drive apps (Drawings or Presentations) to do effectively the same thing without an Adobe license.

    Enjoyed this video and how conscious you are about your choices. My style, boyish/androgynous/classic, is very similar to yours. I, too, have multiples of the same sweater. Great minds? 😉

      Sounds like we're very similar! I'm definitely towing the line between classic and androgynous. Haven't gone full Janelle Monae mostly for the sake of my husband, but I'm inching closer to a proper uniform.

    With thredup returns you can select to receive your refund as store credit instead of back to the original form of payment and you don't have to pay that insane shipping fee! Your money is still staying with them unfortunately but at least you're not losing it completely so you can try to find a different item that works.

    • @VestedInterests

      That is true; failed to mention that. If I shopped more regularly, that might be a more appealing option, but, as I don't, it's not ideal for me. That said, I totally appreciate that their margins are likely low at this point, so I don't mind.

    Lovely video, as always! Just one thing: Maybe think about if you want to keep using 'ocd' as a description of yourself (I don't know if you have ocd - then never mind). I feel like it marginalizes and talks down the struggle of people who suffer from ocd, us healthy people using it as 'I can't stand disorganized things'. Sorry for the rant, I hope it wasn't too confronting. Love from Germany 💜

      Eh, what??
      I have OCD getting in the way regarding a lot of things, what would be the problem if someone should mention it?
      I am in a christmas group where people decorate and celebrate christmas all year,, and they are ANGRY if someone even THINKS there something wrong with it,,, which there is... it is childish OCD behaviour to feel the need to celebrate christmas all year
      Is there something wrong with OCD?? Well, it is a form of defence behaviour to calm the nerves,,, the best thing to do is try to work around the OCD as much as possible
      Oh,,,,, I hope this wasn't too confronting?
      Love from Norway

      30 or so classical garments that
      are mix and match are more than
      enough per season. Most people
      have a load of clothes and clutter
      in their homes. These days less
      or more, but class. At least that
      is how the majority of Swiss
      dress.

    • @VestedInterests
      @VestedInterests  5 лет назад +15

      It's true that the more often you wear a garment, the quicker it will wear out, but I don't think volume is the answer. I'd rather have faster turn over from items that I love than have an abundance of things that just take up space. Look back in history just 100 years and people didn't have nearly as much stuff as we do now. Style wise, I'd say they were better off. ; )
