Kudos to the guy who finally showed up with a screw driver and did what needed to be done while they were still messing with the hydraulic lines. Also, kudos to CCC for continuing to help despite their best efforts at ignoring good advice👏👏
Great “How Not To Do It” video once again Captain. When I bought my last large boat from Parker Boats in Orlando, a beautiful Sea Ray, the Service Manager came out and went over the boat with me, including what to do if things go wrong. He also gave me a list of tools, straps, etc to carry on the boat. Such valuable advice! That was a great dealership.
When I was a kid, 12-13 years old my dad would always let me back the boat trailer down the ramp, so I learned how to do that at an early age. When the neighbor kid, my age and I wanted to go water skiing during the week, his dad who didn't work would pull the boat a mile to the marina for us. Problem was, he didn't know how to back up a trailer so that part was my job.
Oh that £50 I paid for a days tuition from a power boat instructor was the best money ever invested….had many years of happy boating….one of his best advice was to spend a day on the ramps watching

@christophercrowe335 and who what damage was done when they backed the trailer with boat on the and the out drive dragging. Maybe broken motor mount from going backwards.
This gets me even more scared about possibly being a first time boat owner, but also make me a little relaxed that some training and using common sense will go a long way.
Former marine (boat) rigger/tech here. I stopped attempting to help “the clusterphuck people” at the ramp decades ago. I’ll absolutely step in if they genuinely had some bad luck, and receptive to help, but then there are those whose heads are so deeply buried, I won’t go near them with YOUR 10’ pole! 😂 This is the very reason we stopped boating on the weekends. Too many “Qualified Captains” at the ramp, and on the water.
Lessons learned for sure. I know my liad rite pulks my 20 ft 1970 Auqua Sport. I know even when it it parked straight up and down, it has ground clearence a few feet. 175 outboard.
My first boat was an I.O., my first trip pulling the boat out I dragged the out drive about 6 inches up the ramp. I got home and told my dad “I know why you never let me borrow your boat now” I never dragged a out drive again and ever since that boat I’ve only owned inboards.
If something is wrong and you don't know what to do, the mechanic or the place you bought it is a phone call away. Don't take a poll of the drunks on the dock and then decide to do whatever seems like the least complicated.
I just went through this. All good one minute. No power to the trim cylinders the next. Even the trim guage was dark. Luckily I carry fuses of every size and yes it was blown. Lucky again it gave me just enough time to raise the drive once on the trailer before it blew. The wire off the trim switch behind the side panel of the throttle had frayed over time and was grounding out..
The guy who removed the hyd lines is an idiot, just take the cyl off. I'm a marine mechanic, I love people like this, they provide me with plenty of work 😌
Thank you for saying Mr Greenfield, now my son is going to Jacksonville FL for the same marine mechanic Life. We mechanics, are secured with work for many years to come. Boats are sold faster than the knowledge of experience.
@Kirk Ward Your son should have no problem finding work in that field. Here in Canada they are starving for marine mechanics, I have never been out of work. Now at 43 I'm semi retired and live off grid on a remote island off the coast of BC, even here there is no shortage of work. Good luck to your son 🙂
I really don’t know much about boats but common sense tells you not to put your boat on your trailer like that. They should of listened to you. Great video. ✌️👍
There is a pin that goes through the outboard end of the rams and through the outdrive case. That's how it lifts! There are a couple of E clips holding it. Remove the pin and lift the unit! WOW!!! They finally figured it out!
Hello Fellow Boating Enthusiasts, Friends, And Supporters Of The World Famous CREDIT CARD CAPTAIN: Thank you again CAPTAIN for a mechanical + very enjoyable video. Anyone can have a mechanical, electrical, or hydrolic failure while you are on the water. Many people can't rationalize the different systems let alone requesting help from experienced boaters. Others boaters just listen to people that are assertive but are professional dog walkers ,& the closest they have ever come to a vessel glints in their bathtub. CAPTAIN, excellent video on what not to do. God Bless you and your family CAPTAIN. TMP from N.J. 😊😊😊😊
There is a flat head bleeder screw. then you move the stop pin up. simple you don't take the hydraulic lines off or the rams you don't need a strap. The seals on the rams are leaking that is how all the water got in the fluid.
I was on a friends boat and had this exact same thing happen, on his boat the electric hydraulic pump seized. This boat had less than 20 hours on it still under warranty. I had a crescent wrench with me and I removed the hydraulic lines at the pump and lifted the lower unit tied it off and took to the boat to the dealerships dropped it off. Two weeks later we where underway that was on a Volvo out drive . 😁🛫
@@FlyMeAirplane I did not consider the pin, however in the case of my friends boat the lines were coming off to change the pump. I see the good part being you do not potentially introduce air into the hydraulic system when you pull the pin. But when we look at the Volvo in the video look at the water that came out of the contaminated hydraulic system. So to get it off the ramp quickly the pin is the way to go. Does the MerCruser II work the same way? I just noticed your screen name cool! 😁🛫
I live a thousand miles from salt water, but I had to learn how to read buoys that I've never seen and have since forgotten. A lot of it was dead basics, which I now realize some people don't know.
Well there once was a nice boat at the dock, but after hitting many a rock and dragging their skeg up the ramp they said to themselves all we need is a sawzall to make that skeg a bit shorter.......Yap, little do people know owning a boat there is a lot to know about navigation, mechanics and cost of repairs.
I tell ya what... we all ain't perfect, but most of us have COMMON SENSE MECHANICAL ABILITY. Like the "purchase angle'' for strapping it up to the two transom tow eyes.. I look at it, and it's a no-brainer. (Maybe I take it for granted?) Metrosexuals.... not so much.
He could have stuck a short piece of 2x6 between the outdrive and the transom plate to hold it up.... or put a couple pieces atop the after bunks to elevate the whole boat. Lumber is always the solution.
"Got to have a 10mm" 😂😂😂 I don't know what they're made of but I can never seem to keep one. I dropped a 10mm socket in an engine bay, once and it vanished before it hit the floor. Gone. I don't know where the heck it went. Probably with those odd socks that turn into wire coat hangers. 😂😂😂😂
LOL! Boats are kind of like dryers. Before I had one of those magnetic tools, I lost about 15-20 bucks worth of stainless hex nuts in the bilge compartment of my boat over the years, because of fumble fingers. When I finally got one, it was like playing one of those old crane games at the arcade. I've got a lifetime supply of nuts for my batteries now. 🤷♂
Along those lines, I once stuck a Bic lighter down a four-barrel to keep the choke open. It got sucked in and I just left it. That motor was pretty old, anyway.
You have to remember that most people have the mechanical knowledge of a door knob and couldn't pour piss out of a boot with the directions on the bottom.

This happened to me once. Tied life jackets to the back of the bunks which allowed the backend enough clearance without the skeg scraping.
