    I can't fault the guy. I was lucky that I spent my entire childhood growing up around boats. Started off cleaning the boat...throwing anchors.......changing water pumps out and other repairs...backing the trailer and finally my dad let me take the boat out by myself. I knew a boat in and out at that point. This poor guy was trying to learn it all at once

      Me too brother. But I got to say I was watching these kinds of videos for a few months before then even. And it is stressful and anxiety inducing event the first few times you go to the ramp. Definitely go when there’s no one else there during the middle of the week because the weekend is an anxiety attack waiting to happen. But it just takes practice patients and a few times grabbing your balls and just doing it.

Seriously? Could you have not done that when your were in line? Or maybe at home? Takes me 3-5 minutes to launch, park and be gone.

    The strap and hook ALWAYS goes under the roller as he did. The boat eyelet and strap hook should butt up against the underside of the roller. This will act as a stop and prevent the boat from flying off the trailer when driving and coming to a sudden stop on the freeway. Had he backed the trailer back slightly where the back of the boat is still floating, it would be easier to completely winch the boat up fully. Transom tie down straps are required as well. (I have a twin engine 29 foot boat and a bunk bed trailer, I just drive the boat up to where the eyelet meets the roller.) With practice, driving a boat fully onto a trailer is the easiest way to load a boat...one minute and done!
    Since I launch and retrieve my boat solo, I just drive my boat off the trailer when unloading/ drive on to load. This dude had a tow vehicle driver, so when unloading, the driver can just tap the brakes and the boat will just float off. With practice you gain experience, and with experience you gain skills....so practice a few times during each outing. The same could be said about docking a boat...practice... and learn about the effects of wind and current.
    I had been boating for over 35 years, I seen it all. Sad to say that many people these days have money to purchase a boat, but lack the common sense to operate one.

    I've repaired a lot of bows of boat owners like this.
    I've been launching and retrieving boats since I was a teenager in the 60s.
    Its illegal in NJ to use power to get on the trailer.
    1 I lash. A rope to the bow.
    2 When we get to the ramp, I get out and grab the rope.
    3 Then my girlfriend takes the rope as she sits on the ramp bulkhead waiting for me to get the Expedition.
    The winch cable is already out to the stern keel roller.
    4 After submerging the trailer, I hook up the winch to the bow eye.
    5 I crank it on the keel rollers until it's 100% on the trailer. My girlfriend steadys the stern.
    6 Pull out of the ramp onto dry land.
    BTW I use a turnbuckle instead of a safety chain.

    It is amazing to watch boat retrievals. We have lots of beach launch areas out from where I live, pure open beach retrievals and quite often the wind is up a little and the waves up to 3 or 4 feet in height by the time they return from fishing trips. My wife and I saw 3 Toyota Land Cruisers get almost totally swamped because of inexperience by skippers and their friends. All 3 were guys trying to drive the boats on trailers that were not drive on trailers and by the time they had the boat onto the trailer the vehicle just bogged down to the axles with waves coming over the back of the vehilcle. One of the Cruisers was spinning the rear wheels and the young guy hadn't engaged 4 wheel drive. Luckily another vehicle was able to pull him out with a snatch strap but the waves had gone right over the rear of the Cruiser. It was brand new too.

    • @waynewong3880
      @waynewong3880 2 года назад

      Rollers may work for small boat, but not bigger ones. Rollers are inherently dangerous for any size of boat, without proper tie downs and bow chain, the boat will roll and fly over the winch and onto the tow vehicle during an emergency stop. And with the boat stored on the trailer, over a few years, the boat will have roller dents cause by too much weight over a tiny area...think women's high heels.

    Just bought my first bass boat. Not any experience with a boat. Watching lots of these type of videos to try and learn what not to do.
    Question…I see where vehicles are ending up sunk at the ramp. How is this happening? I have a 4wd SUV to pull my tracker 175 tf. If I am launching and recovering in 4WD does putting my vehicle in park lock both front and back wheels? If not, what else should be done to prevent losing my SUV at the ramp?

    • @waynewong3880
      @waynewong3880 2 года назад

      Vehicles usually sink during the unloading process when the boat is still hooked onto the trailer. The rear tires of the tow vehicles goes into the water where the ramp is very slippery, this combined with the weight of the boat and the momentum of backing up, can pull the tow vehicle under. (Just like tying to stop in snow...you will skid.) With normal ramp angle, the rear tires of the tow vehicle should never get wet, if it does, the trailer is in too deep for both unloading and loading.
      You won't lose your SUV (Assuming that it has enough towing capacity) if the ramp is not full of algae above the water line. Back up very SLOWLY. If you are still concern, place a 4x4 piece of wood on the ramp, just before the water. This will prevent your tow vehicle from sliding into the water. If you have a helper, you can float your boat off the trailer. With the boat attached to lines, and the helper staying on the dock, he can pull the boat towards the dock.
      Where I boat, we have tides that rise and lower 5 feet in a matter of a few hours in the Pacific Ocean, so I try to launch or retrieve my boat in high tide. (In low tide, the ramp is slippery and you can drive the trailer off the end of the ramp, and now the trailer will get hung up. It never happened to me, but I already seen 2 trailers get hung up in April 2022. (Did not read the "End of Ramp" signs). One guy backed his pick-up with half of the rear tires in the water. Not only that the trailer is in way too deep, the pick-up slid back even more with the water up to the tail gate.

    Must be 1st time boat owners. But those trailer winches are very confusing. I mean 2 settings are very confusing. If you back your trailer in where the bunks are submerged the bow of boat will float high enough to clear the roller in the front

      Put your hand at the bottom of the wheel. Watch your driver mirror. In the mirror if you want the trailer to go left. Move your hand left. That how I teach

    Back the trailer next to the dock. Load it w/o power loading. It’s easier.

    Why do I get the idea he's never used a boat winch before. I think the problem was that he was afraid to get is feet wet.

    Don't be afraid to get the trucks rear wheels a little wet. With this gentle slope ,calm seas and no wind he could have backed the trailer in a little deeper and floated the boat on it without power. I did this all the time on a steeper ramp in harsher conditions then that.

    • @CreditCardCaptain
      @CreditCardCaptain  2 года назад +1

      Deeper made it worse. He needs his trailer adjusted for that. It would never settle right he might be there all day. That boat is pretty flat and doesn’t lay on the trailer well like a full v hull does.

    • @richardcranium3417
      @richardcranium3417 2 года назад

      That depends on the ramp. Some ramps around here getting the rear wheels wet leads to getting the truck interior wet.?

      @Capt. GenlmanJackHe said (in a reply to another commenter) that he did help them, but after he yelled that he has the same trailer, he blew out his mic. Here's his quote on what he says he did to help this couple-
      "I got his bunks at the right depth and gave her tips on backing up."
      So, maybe he's not such a terrible person. He seemed nice enough to me, but what do I know? I'm just a stranger who somehow found her way to this video, despite having never watched boating videos! I wasn't aware that "watching people launch boats and/or pull them out" was a pastime people enjoyed!Apparently I'm the latest victim of the infamous "RUclips rabbithole"! Anyway, I hope you have a lovely weekend, Captain!🙂

    Never even dawned on him what that yellow thing at the front by the winch was for. I always wanted to make videos like this especially up North on the first days you can get on the water where you have lots of people who have never had a boat. I think the best I saw was when they did not unhook the winch and when the truck pulled up it dragged the boat up the launch. It was a smaller boat so they could push it back into the water but it was funny as hell. And of course all the people who forget to put the plug in before they launch. Yes and load your stuff in the boat before the launch, launch back boat out until truck is parked and everyone is ready to go and pull up so they can all jump in. Back in move boat out of the way as the truck leaves you are there for a minute or two. Up north people are not so polite.

  • @scottawes921
    @scottawes921 2 года назад

    Man, my jetboat floats shallow. You don't have to drag it up there. It's got a rubber V-block with a steel bracket that moves up and down. I just bump the block, hop up there lift the bracket to the nose ring and pin it with a quick clip. The only issue I had to deal with was installing guide poles on the rear steps of the fenders on the trailer due to cross currents at the ramp. If the stern drifts, you're screwed.

    Lol does any of these people know what a wench does? On a bunk trailer you dump the trailer in to get them wet then pull out so the front of the bunks are out of the water a foot or so. Then tie on the wench and crank away. Perfect every time.
