I have been searching for this movie for a long, long time. I first saw it in 1957 when I was 11 years old. I was captivated by its ingenious plot, which revolved around a cleverly orchestrated murder that ultimately failed to come to fruition. Seeing it again now, as I approach my 79th birthday, I still find it has the same charm it had so many years ago.
Clearly a sequel/remake of "The Lady Killers"...to the point of having Katie Johnson in both films! Anthony Newley also in "The Man Between" or "Inside", 1958, quite acceptable multination picaresque thriller, Jack Palance, Anita Ekberg, Nigel Stock, Donald Pleasance, and the awful Sidney James, restrained for once...McGuffin is a huge gem, Newley does prestidigitation.... Michael Caine also did a small role same era as a flagrantly gay man...Oliver Reed as well, in "League of Gentleman", with Jack Hawkins as leader of a heist.... Michael Caine was in another caper film, Crown Jewels McGuffed, as a dupe of Aldo Ray....and Peter Cushing as again very overtly gay messenger in Olivier's "Hamlet".
Interestingly, Richard Haydn~~~not in this film...split his career playing both straight men and campy gays, as in hilarious "Sitting Pretty", Maureen O'Hara, Bob Young, Ed Begley Sr, John Russell... and in a 'Dick Van Dyke Show' episode, as retired radio comedian. Haydn's gay roles had 'mother' figures as prominent factors...folk belief was that controlling harridans feminized their children. Oddly, contrary to his intellectual prudish role here, played a womanizing Spaniard! Whereas Pleasance was as street organ-grinder pauper, bribable, in Lisbon. Between countries, I guess...ends in Paris, like all other roads and jets lead. Haydn very solid as botanist on Trev Howard/Brando's 'Bounty.'
Your memory of it revealing the ends as a failure made me lose any interest..m

Thanks. Fun.
Thank you for the fun movie! 🤩
Loved it. A real gem deserving of restoration. Thank you NS
Wendy Hiller my fave actress. Tilda Swinton, as alien elfoid, not in running. Permettez moi. Some of my replies and commentariat. First part on name in emailed address.
" THOMASINA. Nowadaze, Funny sort of name. Methinks of "Aunt Tammy' and "Peeping Thomasette". Manyway, moi grew up on Peanuts, Pogo, Feiffer, Astérix, Tintin, Lucky Luke and find grief gravely good, yes.... This film, pure gravy. The most interesting is how the title does all the work...murderous family is seen as normal...looking glass murder mystery world. Shades of the film? The Ladykillers' another British film
Great film with a terrific cast, Nigel Patrick never gave a bad performance
Yes ,one our great actors in those days . He was able to convincingly adopt a variety of character roles. Long gone but N.P. not forgotten.

British movies and actors are definitely the best in the world! I'm not British
Michael Caine's second feature film credit (he's done some credited television work) and the last feature film credit for Katie Johnson. She's perhaps best remembered as the little old lady who is the object of the criminals in the black comedy THE LADYKILLERS, for which she won the BAFTA as Best Actress. Caine, Hiller, and Coburn were all acting Oscar winners, and Newley shared an Oscar nomination for the score for the film WILLIE WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY.

@@JamesSimmons-d1t I'll have to look up "The Man Between" - sounds like a winner. Newley has a small part as a soldier in "X the Unknown," one of the Quatermass films, and has also in an uncredited part in Olivier's "Henry V." Odd you should mention Aldo Ray - last night I watched "The Marrying Kind," his first starring role.
This is like Kind Hearts and Coronets in reverse.

Left out word "Newley', on his role as philandering sidekick taxi driver, in thriller mentioned.
I failed to recognize MICHAEL CAINE.
