Based on my experiences, as an INTP, and on my understanding of typology, I want to offer a hypothesis of sorts as to why at least some INTPs may believe themselves to be INTJs. Broadly speaking, I believe INTPs may experience a kind of evolutionary pressure to adapt themselves to an INTJ mode of being, both in school and the workplace. INTJs, I would argue, possess traits that make them more naturally able than are INTPs to make use of and produce results with their intellectual abilities that more closely conform with the expectations of academia and the business world. INTPs, on the other hand, often possess a kind of chameleon ability to blend in when needed. So, an INTP can learn to adapt her Ti/Ne explorative thinking engine into a kind of facsimile of an INTJ's results-oriented, focused, Te to-the-point expressiveness. Because this process of adaptation can begin in adolescence, perhaps in response to more than one of those "Fails to work up to her abilities" comments on her report card, and in an Fe inferior attempt to allay parental concerns, the INTP individual may be only half aware that she is constricting her still developing NE abilities and energy in awkward directions and is perhaps trying to impose a limit on the depth of Ti exploration, just in order to get her papers done on time and make everyone happy.
Very true! If we don’t activate certain aspects of INTJ, we fail at life. Lol. All this wisdom, knowledge and potential should be actualized or else it’s futile.
I only have a fairly superficial knowledge of Myers-Brigg, but I've certainly been getting mixed messages over the years as to whether I'm INTP or INTJ ... my older brother (an INTJ ... & proud of it) was something of an expert in both MBTI & enneagram and was pretty sure I was/am INTP ... But every time I take the test it's INTJ ... I suspect I'm strongly INT but mildly J or P ... test percentages certainly seem to indicate that (I'm guessing a mild P with a few J tendencies).
I have an advantage here. I'm 65 and just began analyzing my personality. So I can look back at my life and recognize the patterns. I always thought there was something wrong with me. Now I realize that's what it's like to have lived life as an INTP. Dealing with life's problems isn't any easier now, but I feel better knowing why I think and act the way I do.
@@Highencast Yes, you really are. 54-year old INTJ here and I can only dream how I would have thrived if I’d had the internet as a young person. Sigh… 💔 It truly hurts. I feel I really lost something in missing that opportunity growing up to be honest. But i try to not lament too much and just make the most of it now. 😉👍🏼
MBTI is really good for explaining past actions, (you and I have probably both seen this) but should never be used as an excuse for present behavior. Maybe an explanation, but not an excuse.
INTP explains much better INTJ why, when I discovered my poetry had hit upon a moment that required regular meter and rhyme - formal poetry - I focused on it so totally that I stopped paying to the rent and went homeless for awhile. But also published a bunch of villanelles and double sonnets I assumed I was INTJ+autistism spectrum. Now I get it that I'm INTP.
@@toddjacksonpoetry No. Things like poetry--original creations--that which comes from within--that's all Ni. Doesn't matter about the formal meter and rhyme. And that you would top paying the rent and go homeless--Se. Here is where people lack understanding of Si, which, among other things, is the focus on one's personal physical domain. INTP would never become homeless--risk, lack of comfort, safety, security--that's all Si. You are an INTJ. Also "disorders" like autism--that's Ni and Fi with volume turned way up.
About fiction books. INTP (and ENTP), don't always process their emotions, but the healthy INTP and ENTP will find books/drama, music, etc as a way to process those emotions. Secretly. INTP in Fe grip might eveñ think they're INFP due to that.
You just perfectly described my whole life experience. I'm an INTP, who loves emotional music and movies, so I mistyped myself as an INFP in the past, because I thought that the way I enjoy these things just doesn't align with the "detached, cold, emotionless" (as it's sometimes described) personality of an INTP.
Ooh... INTJ vs INTP the eternal debate. The first online tests i took showed i am an INTP and i didn't question the results because i identified with the introversion, the rationality and the uneasiness in social interactions. After i researched cognitive functions, i started to think that i might fit more with the INTJ way of processing information and decision making. -Religion: I am not a religious person but i find allot of meaning and wisdom in all kinds of religious philosophies. I view them as a kind of mythology that provides us with accumulated knowledge in the form of archetypes. Same goes with mysticism and occult stuff. -Arguing: I have very strong opinions on things i have researched extensively and i don't mind expressing them. I am aware i might hurt someone's feelings so i'm usually very careful to make it clear that it's not personal. I stay rational when arguing online as well as in person. -Knowledge: Knowledge is power only when its applied... enough said. In school i was a top student in classes i cared about and a very mediocre one in the ones i didn't. -Communication: I like to get to the point, period. -Books: I prefer books that have information or narrate stories relative to the topics i am interested in. I prefer sci-fi and fantasy movies/series for entertainment though. -Music: I like music that carries some kind of meaning ether in the lyrics or in the feelings it creates. So what do you think? Am i an INTP or an INTJ?
But honestly those responses seem more in-line with INTJ. One thing is that INTPs have Se-polr so they seem awkward in their body, whereas INTJs have Fe-polr so they seem awkward with social conventions etc.
I am INTP. Because of the thing mentioned in the video i can't actually finish that test and i never get good results. In half of the question i see double meaning and answer neutral answer. For example question "do you like to plan things?" Does it mean if i LIKE to plan or if i actually plan. And even if i plan, does it mean do i follow this plan or just plan in a hope i will follow it but never actually do? I don't even get INT in the test but after researching every introverted personality one by one i don't see an alternative. I see you are like me, not able to write short messages online =) Religion: I am atheist and don't deal with any kind of superstition. I am so materialistic that when people say that someone has an aura in not religion sense i still don't understand what they mean (i do realize they are talking about impression this person gives them, but i don't understand in what way) Arguing: I am also strong on opinions but if someone provides a good evidence i am not able to continue carrying my opinion or if i do, i change my mind later. Once i called to some guy and told "do you remember we discussed **** 3 years ago in my room? It was bugging me and i am just here to say that you were right" Unfortunately he didn't remember and laughed at this. Knowledge: Knowledge is power and it is self-explanatory. It brings satisfaction when you become smarter. Most important thing in life is "to be alive" and "to be happy" all other things are secondary. If getting knowledge brings happiness it doesn't matter if it is applied. Books: Only science books, For all the others we have movies and comics. Music: though i wrote about music in my other comment, can't REALLY tell much because i have only about 10 songs in my playlist that i listen for more than 5 years already.
I relate to everything you said about INTJ, except for the music and books part. To be honest, it's way too subjective to generalize types based on what they read or listen to. I know you pointed out these are caricatures, but I also know there are people who will take them at face value, so I have to clarify this. In all, I tend to like philosophy, horror, and other useless (in comparison to the money-making and career-related) genres because I like them and I'm passionate about philosophy and horror. Not everything in my life is goal-oriented, I have useless passions and interests just like everybody else. Most INTJs aren't the caricature stuck-up boring hustling 100% efficient robots whose interests are solely based on work. Personality types aren't blueprints, just a rough sketch that one can use to learn about themselves, weaknesses, and strengths and become better.
Not wrong, but you zoomed in too much on that point. You have to judge the video as a whole and see every point as it is, just a tendency. After all, the Letters in your type always come with a percentage and one INTJ can have 51% thinking and another can have 89%, same Type, but different. That's why people often combine the MBTI with eneagramm (or however it's written) to get a more distinct result.
Philosophy and horror are far from useless. In regards to philosophy, it would be useless to live a life with a lack of understanding and moral guidance, it's the why of doing things in a particular way. Horror can be useful as a cathartic practice and make normal life seem a lot more manageable. Totally agree on the robot caricature, but I also think everything is useful. If you look into it, you might not be achieving externally visible goals, but there is still value to be gained in the action.
for a moment there, i went like.. here we go again, i have no idea if I'm truly just deluded about being an INTJ that everyone speaks so highly of. all because i fucking love fiction. i read high fantasy, mythological fiction, epic fantasy and even sci fi. like I'd read something useful if i truly felt it was important. but if I'm just trying to blow off steam (which i do need to very often) i would do more useless shit than most people. because I'm efficient enough that after getting everything done, i still have a lot of time left to waste. am I deluded about being an INTJ?
Your comment about finding multiple choice questions hard because of struggling with the exact meanings of the words - I've never seen that mentioned before, but that is so spot on. I thought it was just me! I've even resorted to taking some tests multiple times using different interpretations of words to see how it affects the outcome.
Absolutely not just you. I've spent several, meaningful hours wondering if it was possible to make a job out of 'fixing' all of the bad quizzes, tests and application forms I find online because even the ones that are grammatically correct are just so imprecise. I've definitely rage-quite quizzes because I get to a question I literally can't discern the intended meaning of.
like the personality tests, i did it with my therapist and its like, bro give me the context of this question. I need to know the context to reply accurately.
@@Drebolaskan The information used in creating the tests is copied from each other or has become "accepted" but is not necessarily correct. Much is incorrectly interpreted or extrapolated and applied to areas where it is inappropriate. Also these tests lack sufficient questioning on sensing functions. So as much as I give you credit for trying, there's still no guarantee that you have been typed accurately. What do you think is your type?
When I tested I came out an INTX - 50/50 on the last category. Listening to this I keep switching back and forth again. I thought I was leaning more to the INTJ prior to this, but now I am back steady on I am in the middle. I dress INTJ - I read INTP - I am very focused on getting good grades to get a better job - But I like to study a variety of things just for the knowledge. I hated some classes because they were a waste of time. I get into the details of things, but I am very easy with taking the tests and I assume what the question was about. I am efficient in my communication but I don't care about whether someone is going to hire me or not - I just don't want to waste anyone's time. I don't want to debate, but I am more than happy to bring up ideas and ways to improve processes.
If you were INTJ you would find no value in belaboring the nuance of possibility you were an INTP and you wouldn't want to be anyway. The fact you flip flop and have clear INTP tendencies with INTJ behaviors just proves you're INTP. I feel like an INTP can express INTJ but an INTJ can't express INTP. Take all this with a grain of salt of course and spend the next month analyzing it 😆
Forget the tests and understand what P and J mean. My wife is an INTP, I am an INTJ and often she says I have a "stick in my a" since I really don't like to drop a made plan. We said we go shopping today at 5, then why the heck are you not ready at 4:55 and how dare you to discard the plan and postpone it to tomorrow?
Look at the visual representations. There's a world of difference between the visual manifestation of INTJ vs. INTP. Polar opposites. I, too, test almost 50/50 J/P, but the way INTPs create their environments makes me want to run screaming. Chaos(INTP) vs. Order(INTJ). Which one are you, deep down, if left to your own devices?
@@GleichtrittMy mother would change plans in a dime. She said we would go to some event, like a church social, and it would take me weeks to get used to the idea of being plunged into a crowd of people where I was supposed to have "fun." Then at the last minute, an hour before it was time to go, she would change her mind. It was almost physically painful for me to switch gears like that.
@@edennis8578 I am reasonably organized, hate too much stuff, so I get called a minimalist. The house ebs and flows between ready for company to about 1/2 hour to be picked up and stuffed in a closet. I guess I would say chaos drains my energy and I am very stingy with my energy. So more INTJ
I think you mean INTJs are far more passionate and self-involved in our logical approach, because we tend to specialise. Whereas an INTP, with such surface-level comprehension of many topics, is less likely to be attached to the topic of argument. Very insightful and just reaffirms my self-assessment as an INTJ. Great work.
Ahhh... But you miss a critical point. This 'superficial' comprehension (I would argue it's more than comprehension) can be a superpower when true creativity is needed, and needed fast. I think an INTJ and INTP duo can cure cancer😂
@@raghavrathi884 Do you even know what a Gaussian distribution is? This often works in biology when it is necessary to distribute a population according to some criterion. Thus, a smaller group has a more significant difference from others. intp is 3% and intj is 1%. This suggests that intj has great cognitive abilities. In fact, the most important scientists were of the intj type.
As an INTP I hate debating with INTJs. I process a lot of information and have a general connected thread between them. I am not usually able to cite all my sources and instead read between the lines. INTJs can come at me with 5 articles debunking what I'm saying and it's hard to explain why those articles are biased or missing a nuance (the 'don't believe everything you read on the internet' phenomenon) So, that may be a key way to help people figure out their types. If you are able to cite all your sources you might be an INTJ. If you just have a general 'feel' of between the lines connected I formation, INTP. 6:45 yes. Also this. I can prove INTJs wrong and they will deflect (or find an article that co firms their bias, as is more likely the case). I can admit when I'm wrong, or at least point out when someone made a good point that I have to consider. 11:22 'leveraging knowledge' is a good way to explain what I wrote above.
I am an INTJ. About 4 years ago I took the MBTI quiz and got INTP, I recently took it again and got a different type. INTJ! I got so worried about me not knowing what type I really was so I took the MBTI quiz 5 or more times and got a different types every time! This video helped me come to the conclusion that I am an INTJ. Thanks so much!
Appreciate the dive into negative traits! I'm an INTJ, I thought the religion discussion was interesting, especially given the stereotype of INTJs being atheist. (I do like the culty stuff myself.) Bookwise, I like horror in fiction and a mix of math and cognitive science in nonfiction.
I too am an INTJ and the atheist stereotype is probably coming from the general perception of religion being dumb. I am religous in the general understanding of that word, but only because I dived deep into both science and religion for about 25 years. So it really makes sense to me and I have a pretty precise answer for every question you could imagine which contradicts the popular idea of religion being unreasonable or based on feelings and beliefs only. The reason for all this however, is probably very INTJ. Because we like planing and thinking ahead and the most thinking ahead, is thinking about death and what, if anything, comes after - automatically leading to what came before and so on.
I get the feeling that INTJs in religion veer into religious epistemology. It's mostly theory building and system building. It often ends up being anti-authoritarian, while at the same time re-establishing another one another under 'their' moral code. If that doesn't scream INTJ, I don't know what does.
I’m an INTP that is spiritual but do agree most tend to me agnostic. I also agree with your preface that INTPs are not fans of ‘organized’ religion specifically. I think a lot of INTPs might tend toward some spiritual answer to figure out their constant question of ‘But what is everything, Really?” Einstein for example was INTP and even he made possibility for a more philosophical God. I think a more Philosophical creator might appeal to an INTPs Ti framework, while the dogma of organized religion will be against the INTPs more open minded nature.
It's actually accurate. I was able to know my personlity type better, but most of youtube videos regarding this topic wasn't help at all. But being specific and direct to the point helps a lot
I’m an INTP and a Pentecostal minister 😂🤷🏻♂️. I do think deeply about all the details and focus my ministry on apologetics, teaching Bible Studies and practically applying Scripture. I love to follow the Holy Spirit and preach too- but that spiritual experience is unique. I think through my preparation process and like to make sure I’m being logical.
You're an INTP outlier since INTPs and religion are incompatible because there are too many contradictions in religion. How do you reconcile with all the contradictions in the Bible?
@@blue-phoenix115 which specific examples are troubling you? Differences in the Gospels have to do with the reality that eye witness testimony contained in them comes from multiple perspectives. They also all had a different emphasis about aspects of the identity of Jesus. I can think of other things that you might be referring to as “contradictions” but in 2000 years of church history there has been a lot of effort to harmonize accounts and provide good apologetics for the issues that may come up.
@@joshuapearson9950 I would welcome a nice civil discussion. However, you know how these go: We can go back and forth for a long time and neither of us will switch our POV If I had to bring up contradictions in the Bible, there are too many... And I don't want to waste your time. I'm just very surprised that an INTP embraced religion.
I agree so much about the religion part as an INTJ. It's so refreshing not to see stupid stereotypes saying that INTJs are egocentric and believes themselves to be gods and therefore would be the ones most likely to not subscribe to a religion. I love this video and the way you explain it all so well with legitimacy.
Omg you were very efficient in explaining all of this. It went all so neatly, and I loved the detail of putting the cognitive functions on the screen and mark which one you were talking about! Really really helpful. I'm an INFP (or I think I am) trying to learn more about each personality type, and honestly I think INTPs and INTJs are some of my personal favorites. I've seen other videos explaining their difference but none of them did it as well as you! The specific reason I came for this video is that I'm writing a book with a character that I'm not sure if she is an INTP or an INTJ. It's harder being a fictional instead of a real person (or a fictional character created by somebody else), because it means I can't just take what it's there and analize, I actually have to decide lol
As said, the eternal debate ;) I'm almost certainly an INTJ based on my interests and perceptions. I wasnt sure if INTP before but because I prefer to get to the point and be very pragmatic, I lean a bit more INTJ (though perhaps with a well-developed perceiving function also, because I have broad interests but ultimately focus on what is effective to my goals). You have a very pragmatic and down-to-earth way of defining and describing your observations. A real pleasure to watch and listen to. Thanks for the videos!
I think a better way to explain how INTPs evaluate something is whether it makes internal sense. A Te user cares whether something is useful while the Ti user cares if it has rules and follows them. An INTP would like typology because functions have opposites like Ti-Fe, Si-Ne, Te-Fi, and Se-Ni. It makes a system. An INTJ would like typology for its ability to organize peope into useful groups. They get to know how to best interact with certain types and what strategies are most likepy to be productive and satisfactory.
Amazing video. I was a mistyped INTJ for years. Recently I really started learning about functions. I am 100% an INTP, this is the only video I have seen explaining it so well to me thank you. Also yes, the video could be another hour using even more detailed and precise language, and I would have enjoyed all of it 😂
I've always tested as an INTJ until I took a new test the other day. My result was an INTP. I tested high for Ti and low for Te, but high for Fi and low for Fe. I never cared to explore the INTP personally until now. I compared Ti to Te and I relate to parts of both. I considered that I might be a jumper. After watching this video, I'm confident that I'm an INTJ lol. I did relate to 2 things you said about INTPs, but not that much. Thank you for this video.
Perfectly explained what I'm going through right now. I've used " mistyped investigator" to reconfirm and reassess my type and found the same scenario you have provided xD
How many browser tabs do you have? How many books do you have (physical & electronic) in your libraries? This will make it clear. 😄INTPs usually have hundreds of tabs open (to get to _one day_ 😄), and thousands of books... most of which will never be read (fully). 😄
thank you for correcting what INTPs read. Today I looked up the history of the Bardiche, including how it was handled, while watching 2 of your videos. And now I am reading an old chemistry textbook. Literally the only thing I hate reading is fiction, because my brain keeps telling me that it is all bullshit and I am being lied to. There are exceptions of course, but easily over 90% of what I read is non fiction
INTP perspective: thinking of the people in my life who I think would be classified as INTJ (or ENTJ) I would say that we tend to find each other interesting, and enjoy each others company, as we often tend to find the same sorts of things and conversations interesting. However, we frequently find we have completely different, mutually incomprehensible approaches or worldviews within that. From my INTP side of the fence, that difference tends to be more intriguing, while the INTJ/ENTJ position I think is the more likely one to find exasperation in it (maybe that's just a personal effect of me, but I get the sense there's something more to it as well! 😄). The relationships are ones that are never entirely comfortable in the sense that we'd never have some sort of telepathic understanding, but are rather ones of mutual respect and permanent fascination. And while we really do get along well, we also appreciate a break after spending too long in each other's company!
Mutual respect and permanent fascination. Yes! I'm an INTJ my adult son is an ENTP and a close family friend is an INTP. Our late night conversations were always so entertaining...and mentally invigorating!
I totally agree with the point about religion. I always see INFJs being related to beliefs in the occult, astrology, higher power, etc., but not INTJs. Probably because INTJs, as a thinking type, are seen as too rational to believe in those things, but the truth is Ni + Fi makes this type especially inclined towards those things. I venture to say that perhaps even more than the INFJs.
Infj here. I'm quite atheist lol. I like discussing the ideas but eventually, I can't logically seem to get on board with religion. It's always fun to talk about though.
This was a very interesting comparison. I have tested as INTP each time I do the MBTI test. I have a friend who tested as INTJ. He says I'm argumentative, while I think he's very chill, to the point that I can vividly remember ONE incident where he got heated, and I thought, 'Whoa! He must REALLY be pissed!' I've watched several videos - I think mostly by people who say they're ENFP - where they claim that INTPs are opinionated and argumentative, whereas INTJs just want to understand other perspectives, so it's interesting to hear you say the opposite, if I'm interpreting your words correctly. There are other things that you said that made me go 'Hmmmm that sounds more like my INTJ friend than it sounds like me!' and vice versa, but your description of our argumentative styles stood out the most. I do note that I tend to defer to my friend when it comes to real-world applications of things, while he defers to me more about how things work, which I'd say coincides with INTP and INTJ. Incidentally, he doesn't put much stock in the MBTI though, thinks it's BS, so I make sure to talk to him about it every once in a while just to annoy him. Lol. Anyway, yes, really great video; I'll probably be processing the information for quite a while.
I think I'm an INTP/J split. That's how I've tested multiple times, and that's what I keep getting from examples: I agree with either view at one time or another, and sometimes I have a synthesis of the two. For example, religion: in the most technical sense, I have to admit I'm an agnostic because of the limits of what we can know and because of the inscrutable nature of the subject. However, there are practical benefits to believing in something (almost like a life hack), and so I CHOOSE to believe in religion. It's a mental gymnastic to try and believe something you know you can't know...mostly accomplished by mental tricks like avoidance.
@@fetchyryu Everybody has all functions, they just favor some over others. As you grow older, you may change your outlook; if you were nearly evenly split to begin with, it isn't hard to change categories.
@@fetchyryu because when you do tests, you'll find that each of the letters has a percentage assigned to it. If you're an INTP but you're 51% P and 49% J, it would be foolish to say that you are definitively one or the other.
@@BaneHydraLook at the visual comparisons. INTJs and INTPs express themselves in the physical in totally opposite ways. I also test as nearly 50/50 J/P, but the visual comparisons resolved all of my doubts. INTP = chaos in their environment. They're slobs. INTJ = order, neatness. They tend to be minimalists in their dress and surroundings. If left to your own devices where you could wear what pleases you most and create a physical environment that pleases you most, what would it look like?
Its actually funny, I dont know if there is such a type, but i literally saw myself half in INTP and half in INTJ in the stuff you were saying. Also when i took tests, it came once as INTJ and other time as INTP. But i see im not the only one looking at the comments... :D As far as Religion goes: i'd say im agnostic, but i like philosophy and wisdom that basically comes from all kinds of religions. And i try to use the wisdom by living by it. Arguing- I don't really care that i hurt someone if i say something (i dont usually even notice it), i always express my mind and like to endlessly discuss things to the point of running out of thoughts. Knowledge - I gain knowledge from everywhere, even some seemingly useless sources, but i always try to see how i could use them but i dont care about some hierarchical structuring (how to use knowledge to gain status or something). Communication - I try to be professional, be very efficient, no wasting of words if i am in such a situation, but with friends or with people i find connection with i am not really professional nor formal, i care more about words i say, if it could hurt them or how its gonna affect the relationship we have and therefore i express myself a lot slower and think about what i say in between sentences. Books(Information getting sources i'd say): I find only those that get me information that interest me, but my interest is very broad, but i use almost all of it, even if not instantly but i know i will use all of the info i get later on. (Things about money interest me, but im also very interested in fiction (scifi), i dont like historical and biographies, i dont like emotional books or movies etc. ) Music: I care about the quality of music, the music, i dont care about words in songs. Melody is everything. Random - i like video games a lot and memes, but about dressing i'd say i like dressing comfortably with style, + with the room style definitely the messy one :D
You forgot to add: astro-projection, and the agility to see beyond 5 d chess... aka (tap-dancing on a razor's edge). But I soo get it... H.S./ Coolidge National Deans' list... idinigo by chance?
I started as an INTJ based on the generic test from 16p. But when I got into the stereotypes, I thought INTP fit better. So I researched the cognitive functions and decided I was more INTP. BuuUUUuut now I'm back at this eternal question because I still test as INTJ all the time. Now I'm slowly realizing I may be having a personality crisis, or am really reviewing myself. So now I'm back where I started lol
Tests are based on your perception, so you maybe are just bad at giving the right answer. But if you have a crisis whether you are INTP or INTJ, you are probably an INTP because the IJ's care a lot less about "who am I" than the IP's. I am an INTJ and I was sometimes not 100% sure if I am organized enough to be a J, but I in the end don't care, since I care a lot more about reaching my goals - well and after that I knew I am an INTJ
i recognise this. this is the reason I checked out this video as well. so far, i think, what happens with me is that I'm young and i don't wanna keep changing every few years for the rest of my life. which is why, I'm trying my best to come up with an identity that i can more or less stick to permanently. but that makes this a very important decision and I'm not intp enough to gather all the information and then finally make my decision. i find some information and immediately wanna process how that changes the way i think about a theory I'm working on. so essentially i keep building myself and breaking myself down and often in the middle of this, i don't feel as confident as all INTJs would appear. all that self doubt and second guessing before i truly get to my decision is what makes me feel like an intp. so when I'm in the process of tearing apart a personality, i test as an intp. and once i see a new direction to rebuild, i get back to seeming like every other INTJ. idk what that makes me, or if I'm really just deluding myself.. but so far this is my theory. sorry that this is too long.
Interesting video! As an INTJ, I'd like to share my take on the "INTJs use knowledge for a specific purpose, INTPs just like hoarding it" phrase/idea in the type community. This confused me when I was new at typing but I think I have it figured out now, so hopefully, it can help someone else. From personal experience, I actually often like learning things just for the sake of it, and a few good sources I know say that Ni-doms, in general, tend to enjoy it because Ni loves data about abstract relationships. I guess it's for the sake of the core *meaning* of the information. If I know the core concept then I can "detach" the unrelated/weak variables and see where else it can be applied or how it connects to other similar concepts in case I need it for the future *even if I don't know where I'm going to use it*, similar to the point you brought up about why INTJs are more likely to take an interest in the occult. An INTP (or Ti-dom), on the other hand, will tend to be more interested in the logical and cause-and-effect relationships that define a system. They're going to want to study the system in detail and make that internal mind-map, and then *keep it there* when it's finished so they can use it to make a decision or analyze their overarching worldview, and to do that they obviously have to gather as much info about something as possible. Essentially, Ti is very purposeful with the information it's consuming. If some data isn't logically consistent, Ti will cut it out of the system while Ni will still try to glean some meaning from other aspects of the data. (read on for anecdote) This explains the difference between my thought process and that of an INTP friend I had. We both really liked learning things, but I noticed that he nearly always had a broad conclusion or opinion of some sort after he finished espousing the info. With logic to back it up (even if the evidence was simply logical consistency). I'd have a very solid grasp on the core idea, how to explain and apply it, but would also have to think about it for a little or Google some empirical evidence before I accepted it as a "worldview".
@@exnihilonihilfit6316 At the time of writing that comment, I wasn't familiar with the markup that RUclips used, so I did not. Either way it gets my point across, but thanks for bringing it up so I can correct it, even though it looks weird with a space between the comma and the word so I will revert it back to original so that my point is conveyed without errors.
I find this very interesting. I'm INTJ (although I think I do ENTJ part-time) and I have a coworker who is INTP. It's interesting when we talk about our struggles at work because you can see our NTs from different perspectives working. And it usually leads us to move through our frustrations and feeding off each other's humor which also comes from different perspectives. I did show up once as an INTP on a questionnaire, but I probably have half a dozen other times been INTJ or ENTJ. After reading The 16 Personalities Types by Dr. A.J. Drenth, I really feel more along the lines of INTJ faking the ENTJ part-time.
For negative traits, INTJs and INTPs lose interest or thrive very differently. For the INTJ, the presence of a use, a goal or an over-arching structure or strategy will drive to seek more and deeper knowledge. The INTJ will hit scenarios where they discover what works without fully knowing why or the situation is unlikely so deeper effort is a waste for the main purpose. The acquisition of pure knowledge without advancing the overall purpose simply loses the interest of the INTJ. For the INTP, acquisition of knowledge is the elixir and a grand goal or efficient structure is a bore. It’s not that an INTP is not motivated by purpose, it is more like for a 1000 different related situations, the INTP wants to know exactly what is the best thing to do in each in one and precisely why that is so. Staying on the original task is confining, so it can easily fall away.
*2 comments on your analysis: 1. INTJs are more emotionless than INTPs 2. INTP = collect more information but not deeply INTJ = can specialize in specific discipline and yes deeper than INTPs 1:- on the first case, you conclude the opposite maybe cuz the INTP you know seems less emotional from the time or perspective you perceived or that is a rare case. you have to take more samples. 2:- INTPs can tell INTJ many areas about many field but INTJ can refute and disprove INTPs when it comes to specificity. INTPs are good at a general analysis of something but INTJs are better at critical analysis of a specific area, it is partially because if INTJs don't want to gather information unless it relates to something they want, and will go deep because they constantly keep asking "what if this way" that will basically rebut their own perspective and as an analogy of obsessing to have contingency plans. ______ additionally; INTJs can be way religious because they are proclive to be extremely ethical.
I think you missed her point a bit. She was talking about INTJ-s being more emotional when debating. So doing their extroverted thinking stuff. Of course INTP-s are much better at expressing emotions generally in life. Like when socializing etc. And INTJs will walk with a poker face most of the time. But when they have do Te stuff like public speaking, debating, teaching, presentations,stand-up comedy, acting.. They tend to convey more passion and emotion at that
As an INTP, that was uncomfortably accurate, even down to my wardrobe, but I will say I definitely respect and maybe even envy a little the INTJ's organization, sharpness, and meaningfulness. While not per se messy, the level of entropy in my apartment could be better managed...
I really braced for impact in the beginning when you said "I'll try to offend you", but then you proceeded and the whole video just gave me 'feel good' vibes of how awesome, unique and complementing the two types are. (excluding the socks with sandals part...like...wtf ? Who does that? :D ) After watching the video I came to think (as an INTP) that INTJ would make a great romantic partner for the INTP. Maybe you can make a video about it ? I'd be pretty interested to see what your thoughts are.
I’m an INTP that is generally only interested in fiction for the theoretical aspects of narrative. But I have a double major in philosophy and history, so when I read stories I like them to be non-fictional or historical.
This is a great compare/contrast video between INTPs and INTJs. In terms of religion, I (being an INTP) am agnostic. I believe that there is a higher power/deity, but his/her name may not be necessarily God, Jesus, Allah, etc. In regards to arguments, I do believe that it is accurate to say that INTPs prefer to debate online simply that we have time to think about it whereas INTJs may prefer live debates. (By the way, I believe arguing online is like participating in the Special Olympics. You're still considered a handicap even if you won the argument.) As for the knowledge section, I think it is spot on. Using myself as an example, I recently looked up a lot of information regarding life on an aircraft carrier, even though I have no plans to join the Navy anytime soon. However, I do have mix feelings about the communications portion. As an INTP, I think that I communicate very professionally. I avoid using contractions (unless it is a personal correspondence) and the correct format/tone. However, the video is spot on about the clothing. I rarely iron my shirts and as long as I look presentable, I am good to go. The video is also spot on about books. My library is filled with fantasy or Star Trek novels and Dungeon and Dragon handbooks. (yes, nerd/geek alert.) Overall, it's very informative and further helps me validate my personality type.
(INTJ 5w4) You are delightful. You speak clearly and quickly, you told us the point right upfront and what you were going to be telling us. You even gave people who were just looking for definitions an out. lol, Would hate to waste someone's time. Many of your observations and theory are akin to my own. For instance, you mentioned that INTJs might be more interested in the occult or that type of thing than the INTP would. I literally just told someone yesterday that an INTP is more likely to be a scientist whereas an INTJ is more likely to be a demonologist. HAHAHA Personally, I am fascinated by the paranormal. I have so many questions. Oh and your thoughts on INTP vs INTJ taking a test, where an INTP might focus on the words chosen and their literal meanings, while the INTJ comes from the angle of "what is it the point of this question? what is it that it wants me to say?" ... THAT. Great observation and yes. Totally that. And I concur with INTJ's being more into nonfiction than fiction, although I LOVE me a good Stephen King book. But a nonfiction book that is on a topic that I find useful or fascinating, one I can pick up and open to a section that is relevant, those books I love. For me, enjoy what could be qualified as "self-help" books; but the way I like to go with those is a bit more on the darker side than most people would associate with that genre. Think Robert Greene. My INTP son is a huge history buff and politically inclined.
@@AlexisKingsley Right?! I have tested as an INTP female a few years back. I am very analytical and philosophical in my approach to daily life. Spiritual but not religious. I feel deeply for others and am very affectionate to the ones closest to me (few). I value my alone time for learning/reading self reflection, testing my own ideas about the world. I find the education system to be broken and incapable of nurturing great minds to their fullest potential. Upon first glance, I don’t fit the common stereotype of a female INTP due the fact that I present myself as very feminine at times. I have explored the history of fashion and I love to play with these elements as a form of expression. However it could be that I use fashion and makeup as a tool for coping socially. Music and the arts are a passion of mine and I like to explore them through many lenses; psychological, therapeutic, anthropological, historical context. Could there be a misconception about female INTPs or perhaps my result was off?
heii, let me help you little bit based on my summed up theory & reflection. the most accurate way to decide whether you are intp or even other type is by identifying the cognitive function you use. mbti is based on nurture/how you tend to be in behaving, so it is definitely nuance and prone to bias. cognitive function is nuanced too but it is way more accurate. 1. specifically pointing your femininity, meaning maybe you would relate to be a feeler, it does not reflect your cognitive function as your type. for example, one could be a thinker while low on thinking skill but has high emotional capability, it is not rigid at all even though there is certain tendency. what decide your type is what you are leaning on more most of the times. you could be bad on thinking yet stil rely on them in decision making (of course it's normal if you would not realize that, we tend to be bias in seeing ourself). 2. let me weirdly analyze your cognitive function: - I am very analytical and philosophical in my approach to daily life (Ni/TI). - Spiritual (Ni-Fi usually in intj) but not religious (probably Te, idk i just get the vibe). - I feel deeply for others and am very affectionate to the ones closest to me (few) (do you feel that your feeling is separated from theirs (Fi) or its just blending with yours? (Fe)) - I value my alone time for learning/reading self reflection, testing my own ideas about the world (if it's more precise analysis, it is Ti-Si, if it's more like holistic but logic, it is more Ni-Ti in an infj). - I find the education system to be broken and incapable of nurturing great minds to their fullest potential. (could be Ni-Te, could be Ti-Ne) - I have explored the history of fashion (Ne) and I love to (Fi) play with these elements as a form of expression. However it could be that I use fashion and makeup as a tool for coping socially (Ne doubt). Music and the arts are a passion of mine and I like to explore them through many lenses; psychological, therapeutic, anthropological, historical context (Ne). i would say you are in between intp-intj-infj. now to decide which one is your ego, your primary type, i think you need to reflect on: what is you preference cognitive function in your internal world: is it imaginary-symbolic-holistic vibe(intj), is it monologue vibe-symbolic-holistic logical framework(infj), is it more precise (it is more grounded in it's analysis, less emphasize on holistic view, but more on exploring detail possibility within the system) understanding that leads to holistic framework of understanding (Ti) (intp).
OMG .. I have been reading and watching other RUclips channels to learn about the other types. But this blew them all away. You and Lijo are beyond in my book. Thanks.💙 Oh and I appreciate the vibes details.
ACTUALLY... INTPs find multiple choice test questions often TOO EASY, because, I believe, they can eliminate the wrong answers by understanding what the questioner wants us to know (if that makes any sense).
My depictions of the two are physicist vs engineers. The physicist (intp) focus on asking why, and work to understand and inform others, providing them validation from others that they are "smarter", however it is all theoretical. The engineer (intj) is focused on asking how, and explores potential paths. However, this is practical based and the validation is achieved by progressing with their own values. However, both will use what ever resource is required.
I assure you that the ti path is unusual to understand, and harder to share with others than Te which is made for the understanding of each. On the other hand, the intj with blind fe and Ni fits a lot more with the common cliche about the socially inadapted genius, always on their projects, very serious, with a mystical like connection with the void x). Intps are aloof, goofy and ne is more often seen as "cringy" than te.
As a retired chemist (INTP), most of the engineers I worked with demonstrated the INTJ personality. Imagine an INTP making a presentation to a room of hard core INTJ types and making a side comment which was off the main focus the meeting. You do it only once.
This confirms for me that I'm an INTJ. I feel so seen 😂. You literally mentioned my favorite band. All the other videos I watched left me so confused because I could relate to both but your examples were so spot on.
Lovely video. My two best friends for life since Kindergarden are an INTJ and an INTP. We chat every 1 or 2 weeks regardless of our adult busy lives. There's no small chat, always deep stuff and intellectual stimuli hahah I love them. They are like twins in terms of personality, to external people they seem similar, to me they are entirely different. - INFJ
this is by far the best explanation i’ve heard of intj vs intp. stereotypically i lean more towards intp but your description of intj highly resonates with me. i feel so seen cause stereotypes almost ruined mbti for me.
This is very interesting to me, an ENFP. I find myself gravitating more to INTJ but I have worked with more INTPs and I couldn’t figure out how the vibe could be so different. I relate more to the description of INTJ in this video as in the things that interest me and I agree with dressing the part at work. I need to do more research.
INTP. I think this is one of the best MBTI videos I’ve seen. I thought your mention of music was interesting. My tastes are all over the board but typically it’s lyrics that draw me in the most. Ive been getting deeper and deeper into reggae the past 4 years or so. I love the socially conscious themes that are universal, along with the spiritual angles of oneness and I’m all about the revolutionary political stuff. It helps that the vibe is full of life and energy to me and soothes my anxiety most of the time. My INFJ wife hates it with a passion and says it’s boring and slow and not of my people. So I’ll put it out there: Is reggae a weird genre for an INTP?
I was so stuck between the two types, but your comparisons were spot on and helped me realize I am an INTP and not an INTJ. The clarification between behaviors and cognitive perceptions was a lightbulb lighting up in the dark. The comparisons of how the ISTP is less formal but more in touch with emotions, helped seal the deal. I wondered why I felt different than ISTJs I was seeing. Their minds and logic seemed so agile compared to my way of absorbing concepts and information. But your descriptions were just what I needed to understand I was mistyping myself. And this after several days of watching other videos trying to understand the intricacies of the cognitive aspects. Thanks, you were great!
Very good video. I am a male ambivert NTJ and I am around many women who are INTJs. Your discussion of the differences between INTP and INTJ caused me to think of an engineering firm where the INTPs were the working engineers and the INTJ was possibly their manager. All engineers, but the INTPs would argue with each other over the soundness of the research on a particular application whereas the INTJ would say, "ok, folks, we are going to have to come to some kind of consensus and move forward with that." I really liked your discussion of religion and INTJ. That was incredibly accurate! My own religious beliefs would be considered unconventional and many of the INTJs I know are also spiritual, but may be attracted to alternative interpretations of any religious tradition, even blending traditions where it seems to work. Books, same story, spot-on. although I do think the NTJ will more likely ask, how does this help better understanding in some way? Clothing and dress, I have met the socks, sandals, and cargo shorts folks. They are usually very bright and are often considered eccentric by other personality types. It often takes an INTJ or an ENTJ to see their deeper value to whatever project is being addressed.
I am an INTP and I felt that this video explained some nuances pretty well. I really do care about the "why" in understanding things and like to take time in intellectual pursuits, being a devil's advocate to myself and others. While I have a set of subjects that I focus on, I do enjoy attaining broad knowledge and making connections between different fields. I tend to dress both like an INTJ and INTP as the RUclipsr described and like broad musical genres, including classical. I try to ready one fictional novel a week because it is good for me but consume more non-fiction overall.
haha Im INTP but this video just made me agree more with INTJ examples than INTP examples LMAO. no lie I never get along with other INTPs but, Im pretty sure I'm still intp, as getting along with people has nothing to do with types. but honestly I think its probably bc the examples here were male INTPs, and Im female. while types do share thinking processes, but the human brain and the nature of male and female thinking processes are still vastly different.
thank you, videos like this make me appreciate my flaws more. like they have a positive side. yeah, i know it is obvious :D but it doesn't feel this way most of the time
Christian INTJ here, with a love-hate relationship with the church. Sometimes I feel it showcases the best of humanity. Others I find myself frustrated or even horrified by it. But my faith in God has continued throughout.
After taking the test several times (at least 30 times, not at once!) and typed each time as an INTJ, and after reading about all the functions and trying to understand them etc. , watched a bunch of videos this one included (i liked it by the way), I still struggle and find my self in both. I can't really determine with an acceptable degree of certainty which type fits me the best. Well maybe I should just stick in the middle. INTJP ?...
Have you looked at the breakdown of your percentages? I'm an INTJ, testing the same numerous times over 15 years, but I noticed just lately that my J to P ratio is 55/45.
We're more likely to read encyclopaedias from page to page(it can be just for the pictures or just the juicy details) while INTJs, according to your explanation, will only pickup an encyclopedia if there's information that he/she wants to look for in it. I'm guilty as charged. But there's still some overlaps according to your points, so my quest continues to figure out my type.
🤯Wow. As an INTP I Feel like you might have a crystal ball somewhere. You described me perfectly from the way I think and speak down to some of my preference in music, hobbies and interests. Thinking further though this is potentially bad cause now I realise how predictable I am.🙁 Or maybe this doesn't actually describe most INTP's and it was just by random chance it applies to me.🤔
It's funny. I have a lot of INTP-type interests, so I do get suspicious at times. Then I remember that my reasons for them are all very INTJ: -History: People are people; and we're still the same (well, mostly) biologically as we've been hundreds of years ago. Studying past events helps to detect constants amd unending cycles, as well as the future. -Classical music: Yeah, it's mostly for the mood/meaning. Something about it makes me feel more put-together and capable of conquering the world. Memes: I just wanna laugh, okay? Fiction vs. Nonfiction: I watch a lot of both, but rarely read fiction because it's reading it is an inefficient means of entertainment and general absorbtion. Also watch a lot of fiction because once I start, I need all available closure on every plot and subplot. Also I have an INTP sister. In high school, was wearing blazers, learning to trade stocks on my own, doodling org-charts of potential future shell companies in the margins of my notebooks, and avoiding the more work-intensive levels of every practically-useless class I could get away with (it was so liberating when I discovered most UK university programs took 3 years instead of 4 to complete, didnt care about extracurriculars, and accepted AP exams and SAT subject tests as equals). She, however, rarely thought about the endgame, took every higher level class and extra class that mildly interested her "for funsies", and had an affinity for graphic T-shirts and military field jackets with more pockets than a blazer.
15:54 I'm an INTP, but I also only read Non-fiction books, because I like to cross-reference, comparing and finding hidden patterns on things we already know. That said: Anything stereotypically ISTP (baking, cooking, tools) don't interest me.
I have identified as INTJ for some years now but I'm falling more and more between these categories for some reason. You hit a lot of curious points which were particularly fitting and show how in between I am. Which is fine! People get this idea that you are a type. But types are just contructions based on abstract categories. We are much more complex. Yes, there can be trends and stereotypes, but also there a lot of nuances and exceptions.
as a primarily INTJ who has sometimes also tested as an INTP (like 5% of the time. i was a psych major in college and have taken the MBTI MULTIPLE times), i feel like i have an EXTRAORDINARILY INTIMATE/PERSONAL perspective of BOTH sides of this... as far as how they approach nearly EVERY aspect of life... think of perspective/approach to ANYthing as though its trapped in/part of a funnel. INTPs are EXPANSIVE - they start at the narrow end of the funnel and work their way out. they see ALL of the POSSIBILITIES. INTJs are REDUCTIVE - they start at the wide part of the funnel and are GREAT at boiling things down to their most essential/crucial aspects.
As an INTP, I freely admit to almost ALWAYS wearing shorts, because wet legs dry far faster than wet pants (DUH!), BUT... I have NEVER knowingly worn a flowered shirt nor would I! 😂
Wish I could give a million thumbs. You are one of the most authentic INTJs on this platform and your understanding of your type is so profound. You also do a pretty good job explaining the types too. Please keep posting.
I only read non-fiction, useable Te books lol. I watch my fiction on the screen lol for Se. Also fiction takes forever to describe everything - I know it's a good thing for imagination lol. It just feels like waste of Te time. And I know the movies don't do enough justice ie Harry Potter, but I always just waited for them. Everything the author is describing in 3 pages, I see in 3 seconds of the movie lol.
I agree with basically all of this, as an INTP. One thing though, is that I only read non-fiction. This is not because I can't "use" fiction, but rather that it doesn't add to my inner knowledge framework or understanding of the world. I read non-fiction, but perhaps different from INTJs. Maybe INTJs would read a lot of self help books, about how to get rich, etc etc. Stuff that they can use to help with their practical lives. I read science books or philosophy books, which help me develop my understanding of thoughts on the world. So my non-fiction needn't have a practical real world use, but must help stimulate my Ti thoughts.
I read a lot of classic literature, folktales, short stories. I think because it helps me figure out the human condition. Non-fiction usually about something i don't already understand, or a user manual.. lol.
i honestly do both, i spend an year learning about philosophy and different branches to get my beliefs together, now all i read are practical stuff- i do think i lean intj more. since the branches of philosophies i read were like the meta stuff, phil of religion consciousness, action. not morality or the things that are too what ought be the case and very theoretical. i read thise philosophies to see if i can cut out religion out of my life whihc takes alot oftime & space. it worked
I am a newbie to the personality identity quest. I have taken several tests and done some intensive research, and am still struggling to identify my type. I find your videos very helpful, not only in their content, but in your explanatory style. There is so much about you and the observations you make that resonate with me, which leads me closer to the conclusion that I am likely an INTJ.
Is there any crosstalk between these two? Or, more precisely - can these traits change over time, or are they 'fixed' like the Big 5? I usually test as INTP, but I've taken a couple of tests that came back INTJ. This video makes me think I'm more on the INTP side, but just when I think it's settled, an INTJ trait pops out that I can see in myself. The strongest indication to me that I'm INTP from this video is your description of musical taste. I listen to quite a few different types of music, and I can get lost in highly technical music with feeling - not clinical-sounding exhibitions of skill, but well-made, often highly emotional stuff, and ranging in 'vibe' from plaintive harp music to funk to 'neo-pagan' to extremely aggressive math metal. But I also find myself drawn to the 'occult' type stuff, too, and I'm far from atheistic. I also read lots of different kinds of books from Jung to quantum physics to Discworld. I've been trying to narrow it down with various typology videos over the past couple days, and now I'm really confused....
My introversion is at the point where all I want to do is be alone and chase my interests all the time and when I have to go out to work or pick something up I have a real hatred for even having to look at people on the street. I know this is not good. I do fight the urge but sometimes the thought of a Thanos snap event sounds so good.
found this video because i find myself struggling a bit with my mbti. i identify myself as INTJ but i can't be 100% sure religion: i'm not a religious person (grew up in a religious household, highly triggered by religion), but i do find occult interesting, tarot cards especially. i have a friend who would do tarot readings for me, for instance, if i ask them about a specific person, what they think of me and my friend gives me the info, i know better how to approach that person, or how to make them like me better if i need to. or about love life, what to expect in the future arguing: i dont like arguing online, for me its a waste of time. i have very strong opinions on certain topics, i am a piercing enthusiast and once we had an argument with my friend about piercing guns. they never changed their mind about piercing guns which i'm pissed about, i hate piercing guns. and to this day, we still argue about piercing guns. if it comes to sensitive topics, like transphobia, i don't care about other people's feelings. transphobia is wrong and i will protect my opinion with all my heart. knowledge: well, i never did well at school, at least i think so. i did well in languages and literature, i wrote good essays because i love writing, and i aced every biology test because i want to go to med school. that's it in every other subject i sucked ngl... i suck at math specifically.. though i still aced math exam simply because im good at cheating communication: i get straight to the point and i can often sound rude, i'm sorry books: i like classic literature. i'm a book enthusiast. and i don't like people who read literal smut, you don't need books to read that just say you don't appreciate literature and you like fanfics on ao3 or something. only classic literature on my bookshelves, russian literature. dostoevsky or dazai osamu. i read slow but i really enjoy reading something deep music: i divide my playlists in different vibes, one goth and post punk, second metal and rock, third pop like lady gaga. and i absolutely HATE people who mix up different genres in their playlists. liek don't you listen to different genres depending on your mood? English is not my first language, and i've seen someone write this in the comment section so i'm writing this as well to compare later. yeah i still think i'm an intj after comparing this
I was also great in math and chemistry, always focused on growth, spiritual, learn only what I can use, was an honor student, history class was a pain for me too but I passed it.
I went for probably ten years thinking I was INTJ until a friend pegged me as INTP without asking and looking into it actually seemed pretty accurate. Cue a year long off and on study of trying to figure which one I am. This was by far the most helpful comparison to help me come to terms with the best high probability I was in fact INTP all along. I think you did a great job of trying to cater to INTP while making your arguments here and every example was on point. Argumentative on Reddit, but cautious and catering in person, Moody rock and technical jazz, comfort wear. You started to stick INTP to just reading fiction which perplexed me but you quickly fixed it. I'll listen to audiobooks and podcasts ranging from history to economics to statistics to fantasy to science fiction. Anything is educational and I'll listen to anything that I might learn and store away for a day I might could need it. The Martian apparently seems to be the highly technical fiction tailor made for INTP and the book was absolutely amazing. I could go back and listen to the other examples given to add to my review but I feel the point has long been made for you INTJ. Again, thanks for this excellent comparison and the visual guides ni, te, etc was massively helpful.
How many browser tabs do you have? How many books do you have (physical & electronic) in your libraries? This will make it clear. 😄INTPs usually have hundreds of tabs open (to get to one day 😄), and thousands of books... opposite of INTJ.
@@exnihilonihilfit6316 no more physical books these days but an audio library longer than I have time for. I've learned to stay more organized lately than to have 30 tabs open any more and never have more than 10 but then again I have 4 screens with one or more things going on in each one so...
I was having to jump back 10 seconds frequently before you even got to the first point between INTP and INTJ and it just made so much sense to me. Not that you were talking fast just that I needed to ponder a bit, sorry!
When things become this down to interpretation, it leaves the realm of science. This stuff might be helpful for just having people hear you out about who you are when you can’t explain it yourself, but perhaps we shouldn’t worry about the tiny differences of the made up personality types. We are all plastic.
I like that I commented on the video before you talked about how you wanted to do it, and was pretty wrong about how I assumed the video would go. Still think what I said is true though. 😅
I found your video very useful. It was very clever to use images to illustrate the differences between the two. Once I saw the photos it was very clear to me.
Hi Alexis, I just discovered your channel today. I've been going through your videos and I really enjoy your perspectives thus far! I'm an INTP and I am one who consistently mistyped as INTJ. I never quite felt that the description was as accurate as it should have been. (It was about 60-75% accurate compared to the INTP description being closer to that 95-99% accuracy for which I was looking.) Some of the picture comparisons between INTJ and INTP made me laugh, particularly the bedroom ones. I saw you have some productivity videos that I intend to look into later!
The way I used astrology back in junior high is similar to how I use personality typology now: a way to know and understand people and prepare beforehand on what to do or how to react in interpersonal interactions. Also, I read a whole dictionary back in junior high because my Literature and headteacher whom I looked up to told my class to have a dictionary to help with writing essays. I was like "What good of a book if I don't read it?" 😅 I did enjoy it and met another person who is like the male version of me that also read dictionary when bored for fun (and for his classwork). I like learning for both the enjoyment of knowing something new and to be prepare, just in case. I like both fiction and non-fiction but reading fictions to me has extra purposes/ uses than just because I like it. Things I like and chose to get in usually serve more than one purpose than just to satisfy myself. For example, reading various styles of writing helps me practice and learn more about the language I'm learning as well as different writing styles, tone of voices, get ideas on possible scenarios to prepare for (again), etc. Fictions has the extra benefits of helping me identify and process my emotions, learn to empathize, know and understand people.
I'm going to take a big risk and comment before I've listened to the whole video, I'm at 4:03 in, and on the topic of religion, as expressed thus far, I think there's a mistake here, perhaps based on what I guess is Ms. Kingsley's INTJ perspective on what religion is. Statistically I'm pretty sure INTP are one of the types most likely to be religious and INTJ's might be the least religious. I'm pretty sure I've read something along those lines. That's what set off a few alarm bells initially. Now, if Ms. Kingsley is wrong here, then why? Her initial explanation (so far) immediately started to describe religion as an institution, a hierarchy, and I think that's telling. If I were to guess right now I'd suspect Ms. Kingsley, like may INTJs, see the real-world presence of religions in their institutions but don't believe the beliefs or truths held by those religions. They can see practical realities, benefits and problems of religions but may not be fans of the messy world of meta-physical truth seeking. As such INTPs are more likely to enjoy delving into, and connecting with, a system of thought and beliefs that seeks to understand or explain the world at the highest and broadest levels. Similar to philosophy, religion offers perspective on how to view and think about the world and how things connect. On the other hand, much of that belief is nebulous and of questionable use to a pragmatic INTJ. If one were a big hearted INTJ who primarily filters things through a desire to 'do good' in the world, then perhaps religion would be of practical use to an INTJ, but I doubt the community aspect (the most messy part) would permit most INTJ's to see that as most efficient. It's an almost cynical view of religion that takes something primarily concerned with belief but views it only in a physical-institutional way - classic offensive INTJ. Maybe if an INTJ were to have a nagging sense that there is something bigger out there, and they can't deny that, then the might adopt whichever religion seemed most pragmatic and true to help them manage those feelings... For an INTP, there's a lot of fodder for gaining truth either in the 'raw material' of primary religious texts or the many theologians and philosophers who have looked at it. Much of religion connects with the INTP desire for convergent truth, understanding everything but has too many open questions to be efficient enough for INTJs. This is a huge rabbit-hole, and I'm supposed to be at work... but thanks for raising this!
This specific mistyping is only an issue for the INTJ, considering these two types. INTPs don’t care what they think they are. They only care about clean logic in understanding. I suspect your mistyped INTPs are the same as every INTJ I’ve ever known. They test for their ideal self and not their true self. INTPs don’t waver in truth... especially in their opinion of it because they don’t have an opinion on it. It just is.
That is kinda true but as an INTP I feel a bit stressed cause this is not a perfect science, like I still am not convinced of being an INTP even though I perfectly fit the stereotype. I don’t like this cause it isn’t clean logic basically, though I think INTP would love this kind of things, imagine being able to perfectly classify identities, this is orgasmic for an INTP and very attractive
Interesting that you say INTPs read more into test questions, phrasing, and word choice. I actually think that's why I sometimes test out as an INTJ! I'm solidly an INTP, especially cognitively, although that's obviously a self-assessment (as is the test, for that matter). Most everything you said rings true. I gave up cargo pants and lettered t-shirts a few ago, but I think that's more of an age thing. I'm business-casual these days and professional, but as one in IT I'm still the worst dress person in the room! That's the way it's supposed to be! :) Thanks for the informative video!
I have only just discovered your content Alexis, and am enjoying it so flicking back through some of your videos and encountered this one. Thanks for all the videos! This is an interesting one for me as I have taken various tets I have usually tested as an INTJ, but I am probably hitting more of the INTP categories here. Religion - I would probably say agnostic is a fair description, I am willing to accept there may be a big something but highly doubt it correlates to any form of organised religion that we have. Although on your comment on astrology I would tend to follow the INTJ logic more (it might be something I would be interested in if I thought it worked and yielded insights even if I wasn't clear as to why). Arguments I can probably jump either way on, depending on how invested I am, and how reasonable the other party is being! I can admit my argument is wrong if the other party convinces me of that though. Weirdly while I often prefer communicating by email/text etc, for an argument where I need the back and forth I would generally rather do that in person/verbally. Knowledge, 100% INTJ, even at school I was very focussed on getting grades and getting to a good university, I selected my subjects based on the ease of getting grades in them, and all of my study was very focussed on grades, I did not do anything study wise which was not aimed at that (I am also very lazy!). My degree choice was based on career goals as well. Comunication, more INTP in terms of clothing, which is casual (although conservative casual). Verbally I speak fast though, emails tend to be rather short and to the point. Books I will happily join the INTPs in reading fiction SciFi/Fantasy and other genres (although depends on mood as I can go long periods not reading at all), I don't tend to read many non fiction books, although can often find myself scouring the internet for areas of interest, which are relevant to me at the time. Quite a mix there!
I'm an INTj, but when I take the function--dispositionary test---Ti is higher than it'd extroverted counterpart, which is both atypical and weird. Here's the list of the function supremacy: (1) Ni> (2)Ti> (3)Fi> (4)Te > (5)Ne> (6)Si> (7)Fe> (8)Se> My prospecting to judging ratio is sittin' around P[49]: J[51]
I'm more confused now, I have a lot of INTJ characteristics, but one thing rubs me wrong, the idea that knowledge should have a purpose, in this I'm totally in the INTP camp, I think knowledge for the sake of knowledge is an honorable pursuit. I also have a problem with procrastination, which is INTP like, and to avoid that, and walk towards my goals I create structures and schedules for my whole day, which is quite INTJ like. In a discussion I care about logic and truth and not just my morals or what is useful, which according to you is INTP too. On the other hand I really like to dress well and wouldn't mind a job where I have to dress a suit...well I don't know anymore
I also identify with INTJ the most, and I do consider knowledge for the sake of knowledge to be really honorable. The thing is, if said knowledge isn't going to serve my goals, I personally won't have the drive to pursue it very deeply. My natural curiosity is just not strong enough. I will lose interest very quickly and probably never pick it up again. But I do value everything I do being led by precise info, logic, etc and only speak of what I know well. This is why people often see me as smarter and more knowledgable than I am, and this is why I felt like a fraud when I thought I was INTP. Anyways, INTJs are absolutely considered by everyone to care about logic and truth. They just don't obsess over it as much as INTPs.
How many browser tabs do you have? How many books do you have (physical & electronic) in your libraries? This should make it clear.😄INTPs usually have hundreds of tabs open (to get to _one day_ 😄), and thousands of books... most of which will never be read (fully). 😄
I’m an INTJ and people have confused me with and INTP. To generalize I know INTJS are more likely to plan into the future than INTPs. As an INTJ I like to plan in ahead the activities I were to do on a trip but that doesn’t necessarily mean I will follow my own schedule. I do it as a guideline to plan ahead.
^^ @1:00 you got me! I love your channel much more than the others. I have been watching a lot of videos on the same topic (INTJ vs INTP) and they seemed too long, utterly descriptive and boring, and also annoying at some point. cheers to you for being very "to the point" and saving my time!!!!. I could relate to ALL of your examples as an INTJ, Good job on the video! : DDDD ^^ Also realized my friend is a hardcore INTP, and he keeps talking about a lot of random topics (technical, food, anime, etc) in-depth, and I am always like "WHYYYY" tf do you know all of this!?, ahaha.... yeah, as INTJs, we don't really care about information unless it is useful. Also, Moody Music & organized religion - interesting points!
I consistently test as INTJ but I associate more with INTP, especially stuff like what you mentioned in the video when it comes to: stuff I wear (jeans, band or tech-related t-shirt), I only did well in classes where the subject interested me, other people tend to see me being thoughtful as I speak, for example. My external world tends to be disorganized but my internal world is organized where I categorize things in order to make sense of them. Let’s just say, I like talking in sub-genres when talking about music, especially the genres that I’m most familiar with such as Metal.
Am an intj and i relate to most of the things that you said And yeah , knowledge for us is to be useful I learned english just so i can explore more centent , more books in english to gain the i formations i need to be better in my career And with everything i want to learn I notice that i have this mentality of "Yeah, but where can i use this ?" And the parts where you talked about how INTPs felt for you more smarter I had the same experience in high school I have an intp freind and i couldn't stop thinking about how smart she was Even tho she didn't get food grades as me And i think that's because she had a lot of random informations about various topic

Yes. Very much on point, from my perspective.
They would shift into an ENTJ mindset actually because that is the INTP unconscious
That's very good theory I was thinking similar way.
Just now realizing I am an INTP in my 20s. Can't imagine seeing all this at 65. Us younger generations are really blessed with the internet.
But also published a bunch of villanelles and double sonnets
I assumed I was INTJ+autistism spectrum.
Read that as Iron Grip
I'm an INTJ, my husband is an INTP. I approve of this video.
Thanks Susana!! I was so nervous about getting the INTPs wrong haha
Does that work well, being quite similar?
Is it a good relationship ??
two introverts wow
I am an INTP and I just found out that my closest friend is an INTJ. She's the only person I will get on the phone for.
Based on the bullet points alone I say INTJ 😂
I see you are like me, not able to write short messages online =)
Religion: I am atheist and don't deal with any kind of superstition. I am so materialistic that when people say that someone has an aura in not religion sense i still don't understand what they mean (i do realize they are talking about impression this person gives them, but i don't understand in what way)
Arguing: I am also strong on opinions but if someone provides a good evidence i am not able to continue carrying my opinion or if i do, i change my mind later.
Yes I’m that INTP that often gets typed as an INTJ.
You are whatever I am.I typed as INTJ.
If test questions (including personality tests) were written by an INTP, there would be no ambiguity.
One of the reasons I took the MBTI tests from multiple sites multiple times, tho they all gave me the same result
Great work.
I was looking for this comment about intjs
Surface level knowledge does not go too far in the information age. A quick look on any search engine would give you the answer.
INTJs can come at me with 5 articles debunking what I'm saying and it's hard to explain why those articles are biased or missing a nuance (the 'don't believe everything you read on the internet' phenomenon)
So, that may be a key way to help people figure out their types.
Faux tu as tout inverser
As an INTP-A, sounds about right!
I think you speaking to ISTJ, I don’t think myself or other INTJ could have enough memory slots to remember the sources.
I am an INTP and I think your breakdowns on differences are awesome.
I think through my preparation process and like to make sure I’m being logical.
how would you feel about arguing with an intp athiest
However, you know how these go: We can go back and forth for a long time and neither of us will switch our POV
If I had to bring up contradictions in the Bible, there are too many...
I had to cackle aloud when you mentioned INTJs being possibly into the occult… as an INTJ neck deep in occultism, I heartily approve!
Intj here, finished kybalion what's next?
Also an intj, have to agree completely
As an INTP, 🤮 filthy
Thank you for this video.
omg how is this literally down to the core precisely what happened to me
Perfectly explained what I'm going through right now.
I thought I was an INTP but really am an INTJ
The overlap is wild but the decision making and goal setting is where the gap in the 2 is a huge sea
thank you for correcting what INTPs read.
What I love about INTPs is they're about the only personality that actually teaches me new things! I find them so intriguing (and nerdy 😛)
So interesting!
I just love how you use the word occult LOL that made my day
Infj here. I'm quite atheist lol. I like discussing the ideas but eventually, I can't logically seem to get on board with religion. It's always fun to talk about though.
whats irrational in believing in something? lol
It's a mental gymnastic to try and believe something you know you can't know...mostly accomplished by mental tricks like avoidance.
how can you split when they have polar opposite cognition functions
As far as Religion goes: i'd say im agnostic, but i like philosophy and wisdom that basically comes from all kinds of religions.
(Things about money interest me, but im also very interested in fiction (scifi), i dont like historical and biographies, i dont like emotional books or movies etc. )
Music: I care about the quality of music, the music, i dont care about words in songs.

Okay man i just commented this that i am a hybrid of intp and intj can i get your discord or something where we can exchange toughts
Man you are same as me please
@@keo5295 my man is right
I started as an INTJ based on the generic test from 16p.
Same, but the opposite. I test INTP but I think I am an INTJ. And this fluctuates often.
i recognise this. this is the reason I checked out this video as well. so far, i think, what happens with me is that I'm young and i don't wanna keep changing every few years for the rest of my life. which is why, I'm trying my best to come up with an identity that i can more or less stick to permanently. but that makes this a very important decision and I'm not intp enough to gather all the information and then finally make my decision. i find some information and immediately wanna process how that changes the way i think about a theory I'm working on. so essentially i keep building myself and breaking myself down and often in the middle of this, i don't feel as confident as all INTJs would appear. all that self doubt and second guessing before i truly get to my decision is what makes me feel like an intp. so when I'm in the process of tearing apart a personality, i test as an intp. and once i see a new direction to rebuild, i get back to seeming like every other INTJ. idk what that makes me, or if I'm really just deluding myself.. but so far this is my theory. sorry that this is too long.
(read on for anecdote)
This explains the difference between my thought process and that of an INTP friend I had.
You didn't know " *even if I don't know where I'm going to use it*, " (with a comma _after_ the second *) is not gonna work? 😄
Alright cool, I've figured out that I'm not an INTJ. Now to figure out if I'm actually INTP or INFP...
*2 comments on your analysis:
1. INTJs are more emotionless than INTPs
2. INTP = collect more information but not deeply
INTJ = can specialize in specific discipline and yes deeper than INTPs
1:- on the first case, you conclude the opposite maybe cuz the INTP you know seems less emotional from the time or perspective you perceived or that is a rare case. you have to take more samples.
______
additionally; INTJs can be way religious because they are proclive to be extremely ethical.
They tend to convey more passion and emotion at that
Sounds like someone is an INTJ here.
As an INTP, that was uncomfortably accurate, even down to my wardrobe, but I will say I definitely respect and maybe even envy a little the INTJ's organization, sharpness, and meaningfulness.
While not per se messy, the level of entropy in my apartment could be better managed...
How many browser tabs do you have in total on all your computers/phones?
How many physical & electronic books do you have in total?
I'm an INTP and I listen to nearly every genre of music. I guess my Ne function that makes me want to explore through music
same here
Love the way you under intp especially without being one. Some generally skim and you can tell you know. It was like you knew me personally.
I really braced for impact in the beginning when you said "I'll try to offend you", but then you proceeded and the whole video just gave me 'feel good' vibes of how awesome, unique and complementing the two types are. (excluding the socks with sandals part...like...wtf ? Who does that? :D )
After watching the video I came to think (as an INTP) that INTJ would make a great romantic partner for the INTP.
Jessica I LOVE this comment!! Such interesting observations! Also I totally agree on "dark" self-help books lol

Same here. I didn’t see myself in this discussion at all.
heii, let me help you little bit based on my summed up theory & reflection. the most accurate way to decide whether you are intp or even other type is by identifying the cognitive function you use. mbti is based on nurture/how you tend to be in behaving, so it is definitely nuance and prone to bias. cognitive function is nuanced too but it is way more accurate.
1. specifically pointing your femininity, meaning maybe you would relate to be a feeler, it does not reflect your cognitive function as your type. for example, one could be a thinker while low on thinking skill but has high emotional capability, it is not rigid at all even though there is certain tendency. what decide your type is what you are leaning on more most of the times. you could be bad on thinking yet stil rely on them in decision making (of course it's normal if you would not realize that, we tend to be bias in seeing ourself).
2. let me weirdly analyze your cognitive function:
- I am very analytical and philosophical in my approach to daily life (Ni/TI).
(Fe))
- I value my alone time for learning/reading self reflection, testing my own ideas about the world (if it's more precise analysis, it is Ti-Si, if it's more like holistic but logic, it is more Ni-Ti in an infj).
- I find the education system to be broken and incapable of nurturing great minds to their fullest potential. (could be Ni-Te, could be Ti-Ne)
- I have explored the history of fashion (Ne) and I love to (Fi) play with these elements as a form of expression.
That's a great Ti vs Te analysis!
@@zrje08 what was so extraoridinary about it :D
This confirms for me that I'm an INTJ. I feel so seen 😂. You literally mentioned my favorite band. All the other videos I watched left me so confused because I could relate to both but your examples were so spot on.
Lovely video. My two best friends for life since Kindergarden are an INTJ and an INTP. We chat every 1 or 2 weeks regardless of our adult busy lives. There's no small chat, always deep stuff and intellectual stimuli hahah I love them. They are like twins in terms of personality, to external people they seem similar, to me they are entirely different. - INFJ
Twins is such a great analogy for it!!! Similar at first, but vastly different once you get to know them.
Aye
this is by far the best explanation i’ve heard of intj vs intp. stereotypically i lean more towards intp but your description of intj highly resonates with me. i feel so seen cause stereotypes almost ruined mbti for me.
No genre is weird for INTP ;)
As an INTP this was actually very helpful to me!
Also you're really cute. Just thought I would step outside my comfort zone and say that xD
I appreciate how you didn't tell me to like and subscribe. So now I'm liking and subscribing. 😁
I try to ready one fictional novel a week because it is good for me but consume more non-fiction overall.
omg this youtuber just exposed every thing that me (intj) and my friend (intp) have ever said and argued about in the last 3 years
"Am I hurting the *other*'s feelings?" isn't Fi; it's Fe.
Yep, I would expect INTJ Fi+Te to hold others accountable for managing their own feelings
The vibe I have always gotten was
Intj: I won't hurt you if you don't hurt me.
Intp: I don't want to hurt you please don't hurt me
haha Im INTP but this video just made me agree more with INTJ examples than INTP examples LMAO.
no lie I never get along with other INTPs but, Im pretty sure I'm still intp, as getting along with people has nothing to do with types.
but honestly I think its probably bc the examples here were male INTPs, and Im female.
while types do share thinking processes, but the human brain and the nature of male and female thinking processes are still vastly different.
thank you, videos like this make me appreciate my flaws more. like they have a positive side. yeah, i know it is obvious :D but it doesn't feel this way most of the time
Christian INTJ here, with a love-hate relationship with the church.
Omg this makes soo much more sense!! I thought I was an INTP but I’m more like an INTJ 😭 ty you’re the only accurate one. You just got to the point.
🤯Wow. As an INTP I Feel like you might have a crystal ball somewhere. You described me perfectly from the way I think and speak down to some of my preference in music, hobbies and interests.
Thinking further though this is potentially bad cause now I realise how predictable I am.🙁
Or maybe this doesn't actually describe most INTP's and it was just by random chance it applies to me.🤔
It's funny. I have a lot of INTP-type interests, so I do get suspicious at times. Then I remember that my reasons for them are all very INTJ:
-History: People are people; and we're still the same (well, mostly) biologically as we've been hundreds of years ago.
LOVE the analogy!!
@@ijmimi9186 lolol I relate to fiction books taking too long sooooo much
I agree with basically all of this, as an INTP.
That makes a lot of sense!
I do fight the urge but sometimes the thought of a Thanos snap event sounds so good.
found this video because i find myself struggling a bit with my mbti. i identify myself as INTJ but i can't be 100% sure
religion: i'm not a religious person (grew up in a religious household, highly triggered by religion), but i do find occult interesting, tarot cards especially. i have a friend who would do tarot readings for me, for instance, if i ask them about a specific person, what they think of me and my friend gives me the info, i know better how to approach that person, or how to make them like me better if i need to. or about love life, what to expect in the future
arguing: i dont like arguing online, for me its a waste of time. i have very strong opinions on certain topics, i am a piercing enthusiast and once we had an argument with my friend about piercing guns. they never changed their mind about piercing guns which i'm pissed about, i hate piercing guns. and to this day, we still argue about piercing guns. if it comes to sensitive topics, like transphobia, i don't care about other people's feelings. transphobia is wrong and i will protect my opinion with all my heart.
knowledge: well, i never did well at school, at least i think so. i did well in languages and literature, i wrote good essays because i love writing, and i aced every biology test because i want to go to med school. that's it in every other subject i sucked ngl... i suck at math specifically.. though i still aced math exam simply because im good at cheating
communication: i get straight to the point and i can often sound rude, i'm sorry
books: i like classic literature. i'm a book enthusiast. and i don't like people who read literal smut, you don't need books to read that just say you don't appreciate literature and you like fanfics on ao3 or something. only classic literature on my bookshelves, russian literature. dostoevsky or dazai osamu. i read slow but i really enjoy reading something deep
music: i divide my playlists in different vibes, one goth and post punk, second metal and rock, third pop like lady gaga. and i absolutely HATE people who mix up different genres in their playlists. liek don't you listen to different genres depending on your mood?
Wow, that was brilliant, you’re a female version of what happens in my head.
😂
lol
I can relate to you with the astrology part as an INTJ... LOL
lol
INTP - You just summed up how I dress, what I read and how i talk.
I’m an an INTP and my husband is an INTJ, abs find this video to be quite interesting and accurate
@@wakatpr6583 it’s type theory, not type fact. Best fitting shoe goes in the cart.
@@wakatpr6583 I noticed you couldn’t help but identify as INTP before undermining your logic.
That’s how we do it.
@@thangray531 sorry i did not understand what you meant ?
Here's the list of the function supremacy:
(1) Ni>
(2)Ti>
(3)Fi>
(4)Te >
(5)Ne>
(6)Si>
(7)Fe>
(8)Se>
My prospecting to judging ratio is sittin' around P[49]: J[51]

: DDDD ^^
Also realized my friend is a hardcore INTP, and he keeps talking about a lot of random topics (technical, food, anime, etc) in-depth, and I am always like "WHYYYY" tf do you know all of this!?, ahaha.... yeah, as INTJs, we don't really care about information unless it is useful.
Am an intj and i relate to most of the things that you said
And yeah , knowledge for us is to be useful
I learned english just so i can explore more centent , more books in english to gain the i formations i need to be better in my career
And with everything i want to learn
I notice that i have this mentality of
"Yeah, but where can i use this ?"
And the parts where you talked about how INTPs felt for you more smarter
I had the same experience in high school
I have an intp freind and i couldn't stop thinking about how smart she was
Even tho she didn't get food grades as me
And i think that's because she had a lot of random informations about various topic
