Shelley Winters tells about romances with Clark Gable, Marlon Brando, Errol Flynn and more!

  • She claimed that her love life "rivaled Marilyn Monroe's". Shirley had affairs with the best.....Errol Flynn was the best smelling, Clark Gable did not have bad breath and her stay at Boston's Ritz Carleton with married Burt Lancaster was so romantic.
    As the Associated Press reported, "During her 50 years as a widely known personality, Winters was rarely out of the news. Her stormy marriages, her romances with famous stars, her forays into politics, and feminist causes kept her name before the public. She delighted in giving provocative interviews and seemed to have an opinion on everything." That led to a second career as a writer. Though not a conventional beauty, she claimed that her acting, wit, and "chutzpah" gave her a love life to rival Monroe's. Her alleged "conquests" included William Holden, Sean Connery, Burt Lancaster, Errol Flynn, and Marlon Brando.
    Shelley had three husbands and hours before her death, Winters married long-time companion Gerry DeFord, with whom she had lived for 19 years. Though Winters' daughter objected to the marriage, the actress Sally Kirkland performed the wedding ceremony for the two at Winters' deathbed.
    Shelley Winters was an American actress whose career spanned five decades. She appeared in numerous films, and won Academy Awards for The Diary of Anne Frank (1959) and A Patch of Blue (1965), and received nominations for A Place in the Sun (1951) and The Poseidon Adventure (1972). Other roles Winters appeared in include A Double Life (1947), The Night of the Hunter (1955), Lolita (1962), Alfie (1966), and Pete's Dragon (1977).
    In addition to film, Winters also appeared in television, including a years-long tenure on the sitcom Roseanne, and also authored three autobiographical books.

    There’s a great story about Shelley Winters late in her career being asked to “audition“ for a particular role. She showed up for the audition and calmly placed her Oscars on the casting agent’s desk... and that was the end of it.

    I went from being a student in one of her classes at the Actors Studio to being a friend. She was always supportive of me and my work as an actor. I'll always have great memories of Shelley, but in spite of her encouragement and belief in ,my talent, the best thing I ever did with my life was getting out of that business. And, trust me, many a star wishes they'd done the same before becoming a victim of its trappings.

      YorkiesLove It’s a well documented fact that Gable had halitosis which is a gum disease that causes bad breath. Many of his co-star actresses and even his third wife Carole Lombard stated about he had bad breath. He was also a hard chain smoker and was an alcoholic which didn’t help with the halitosis breath. But in his films his fans would never know. Ah, the allure of the magic of fantasy of Hollywood. LOL.

      I have never read anywhere that Vivien Leigh had early-onset Alzheimer's Disease. I have read that she was alternately diagnosed with schizophrenia and bi-polar disorder, depending on the doctor. Possibly she had both, we will never know. She had one doctor that she trusted, who really helped her (Alex Conachy.) She was briefly hospitalized after her breakdown in 1953. The best biography I have read about her is "Vivien Leigh" by Hugo Vickers. I wouldn't believe anything written by Darwin Porter.

She gave me an Old Armani suit that once belonged to Earnest Borgnine. To quell our boredom she gave me acting lessons. We practiced love scenes. I worked on a womans TV show in the lowest position but saw EVERY celebrity ( tonight show was across the hall so also saw them there too) I personally left out of the control booth to stand next to her. I had never done this with any other famous person. Throughout the years I've listened to her interviews on all the talk shows and knew at one time she roomed with Marilyn Monroe. I like the fact that although she no longer got starlet roles and became obese that didn't stop her from continuing her less glamorous acting roles. She is real. She was a woman ahead of her time in so many ways - she lived as she wanted to and wouldn't be dictated to about morals by the controlling misogynist studios or the media. On her deathbed, I doubt there was a single regret or missed opportunity. I only wish her friend and former flatmate Marilyn Monroe had lived to old age with her - what fun those two would have had as retired actresses touring the chat show scene and partying together! They could have shared an apartment again - a huge and luxurious Beverly Hills one of course - and been like a va va voom version of The Golden Girls!

    Why aren’t there stars like her anymore?
    For somebody who cut her teeth in the thick of the studio system at its post-zenith-but-still-high water-mark I love how open and unashamed and honest Shelley was.
    She is the OG representation/construct of “owning your s**t,” or “living in the light of your truth” so nobody else can weaponize or use it against you. All the worst or most controversial things said about Shelley were probably put out there by the woman herself first.
    Even if she had only ever made A Place in the Sun and quietly faded off, she’d still be interesting. But surviving almost sixty years (or roughly three quarters of the existence of film up to her passing) of reinvention and relevance is a feat. Like the least important thing she did was guest star on a number one rated television show at her leisure.
    Icon. ❤️

    Shelley never had an affair with Clark Gable, she and Yvonne De Carlo had one weekend with Burt Lancaster and Gable, when they were both young starlets.
    Shelley took Burt and De Carlo had Gable.

      @lemorab1 6 лет назад +7

      She wrote that she and Yvonne De Carlo went to Errol Flynn's house for a dinner party on a weekend night and Clark Gable was also there, making it a foursome. Shelley wound up with Flynn and Yvonne paired off with Gable. Shelley claimed that during the evening a doctor arrived and implanted a pill in a small incision into the backs of each of the men. No doctor was ever able to explain this to her, but maybe he was a lesser known Doctor Feelgood (Max Jacobson). Yvonne De Carlo claimed, in her own memoir published several years later, that this evening never happened. Whatever the true story, it made a good yarn.

      lemorab1 wow never heard anything about DeCarlo's love life, would definitely like to read that, she was unbelievably beautiful .

    • @lemorab1
      @lemorab1 6 лет назад +7

      Yvonne De Carlo had it all. I could never understand why she wasn't a bigger star. She was as beautiful as Ava Gardner, she could actually act (see "Criss Cross") and she could sing and dance. Yvonne describes a brief affair with Burt Lancaster. In her memoir, "Shelley Also Known As Shirley," Shelley Winters describes an anguished love affair with a very married Burt Lancaster in what seems to be the late 1940's (they went to see Mary Martin in South Pacific on Broadway.) Winters knew how to spin a yarn and her book is a fun read. Both De Carlo and Winters had very rough childhoods. I believed De Carlo's descriptions of her romances more than I believed Shelley's.

    • @paxsopranodynasty7555
      @paxsopranodynasty7555 6 лет назад +7

      lemorab1 she was in the conversation in my opinion as the most beautiful woman in the business at her time, easily top ten. Top 3 in my mind. Winters was a dish herself especially early on and even into the 60's and early 70's, very curvy full figured woman .

    Winters was Jewish. Gable was uncircumcised, and often did not wash himself carefully "down there." Burt Lancaster too had foreskin, but she may have forgiven that because he washed himself carefully.

    I always reember a scene in one of Shelley's films. Her husband or partner was in a hotel room with a loverI. Iuaghed a lot alsobecause I am a lot like her insuch situations. She stands in front of the door of the d oor with a revolver but then has a book she books at about "How to shoot." I always enjoyed Shelley in the films in which she played a role.
