    I was doing a low level dungeon yesterday as a feral druid, the tank died during a boss fight so our group wiped, and then the tank and one of the other dps quit. The healer asked me to be the tank for this boss, I told them I had never tanked before but I would try. I switched to guardian spec and quickly put the abilities on the hot bar, I glanced them over to get a general idea what each did and then taunted the boss. It was going well, but I ended up dying when the healer finally ran out of mana. Luckily the boss was low enough health already so her and the mage were able to finish it off. By then the dungeon finder had added a new tank so I switched back to feral, but I thought it was fun being the tank for a change.

    This is a great video. Great coverage of what being a tank means. I love the bit about getting into the mindset. It's all spot on. I think I'll point everyone who wants to get into tanking to this video.

    A while ago I was so afraid that ppl will hate on me for not tanking well. But just recently I just finished a dungeon and my party mates said I did great

    always wanted to get into tanking, made a paladin got it to 100 and got gradually comfortable with dungeon tanking until it was second nature. then I entered a raid and realised it was a whole different level (I already knew it was but I had been on my dps Raiding and just went through the motions) I got in, we got to the first boss and it hit me that I only knew DPS mechanics for the bosses. I got nervous, I freaked out a little, I informed the group I had never tanked a raid before and luckily we had a good main tank and we got through the boss. it was an awful experience tanking a raid with no knowledge of the fight and I never tanked again. But I feel like I have my confidence back, I;m going guardian druid this time for the new expansion and I'm enjoying myself a lot more again with tanking. Your guide definitely helped out as I had the mindset of making sure I protect everyone, the idea of Controlling the fight rather than just being a big moving shield has definitely opened my eyes to better ways of tanking through controling the mobs and your whole section on mob movement helped out aswell due to the fact thats my weakest part of my tanking. thank you so much for this it's helped out so much.

    From a mythic tank, and an old TBC raider, this was a lovely video. I really hate the attitude that "tanks are a DPS that moves the boss" - you know, the one that sprung up in MoP thanks to vengeance. The only thing I would add to this video is that even if you are going to keybind (which you should, to be fair) the most important things that every tank should keybind are their taunt, their interrupt, their active mitigation and their cooldowns. Everything else is secondary.

    i used to play back in WotLK as a pally tank, i was a horrible noob but i loved the idea of jumping in feet first and literally laughing as the toughest bosses did barely any damage. i just got back into wow after feeling the hype for WoD and it all came flooding back. even so, i learned a lot from this. i was having trouble finding a way to throw off an avengers shield while moving away so the jumping idea was a eureka moment.
    simply put, awesome tips. they helped a lot and i thank you greatly for them.

    10 years of tanking and this is perfect. I actually went through and leveled all the dps classes and specs just to know for my two mains. I recommend this for anyone new tanks. Level spellcasters, ranged and melee dps to 60. It helped so much and now I just flow. Empathy is everything as a tank. Lol, not for mobs though, screw them.

    I don't normally leave comments but i watched this tanking guide and wanted to say it was very informative. I have been looking for guides to help with my tanking and what a tanks actual roles entails and this is the best I've found so far. I only wish i had watched this and started tanking when i was first able too instead of putting it off saying to myself "I will wait till i get stronger gear" or "I just cant do this because I'm letting everyone down".
    So thanks Tuskeh and i look forward to updates with WoD

    i've noticed its a lot more exciting than doing a dps role in my opinion. i've made some mistakes as normal but i find that since i watched this guide i've improved a lot, i discuss more with my group and generally have more fun doing dungeons, and probably the upcoming raids aswell. you've been a great help, thanks man

    this guide is very helpful, still leveling my first tank, but it's tons of fun. the problem is that i'm using dungeon finder, so i occasionally get people of questionable intelligence in my party, such as the ret pally who refused to turn off his tanking aura, or the healer who decides that a boss fight is the perfect time to backtrack to turn in quests. sorry for complaining

    Very good (intro) guide and absolutely spot on, even to the point of clicking & back peddling (I can hear DPSers gasping!). However, taunt, stun and interrupt MUST be hotkey keybound. Just one very minor addition - the part where you move the boss back slowly is often called 'pushing'. It was described well but not actually named. I first practiced this move on a mob on the bridge in icecrown (next to Chillwind) and I still take new tanks there to do the same (tanking exercises). (sub'd).

    When I tried to tank for first time, I was only dealing damage (I guess that my "Rogue" character is still alive in me XD) and all the mobs were like... EVERYWHERE?! X3 Everyone died and with time, I learned that the point in being a tank is to pull the mobs and make them fight you, and only YOU. Like this, you're giving a chance to the healer to concentrate on everyone and heal them, and the damage dealers are just helping you to kill your enemies. Did I understand the conception of being a tank or no? :) By the way, great job on the video!

      Nerves about tanking can always be an issue. It's important that you try to work past them and be confident in your abilities!

    • @randomnetsurfer
      @randomnetsurfer 9 лет назад

      I tried a few LFR groups in MoP (as various classes) and the amount of vitriol spewed at the tanks - even when the source of failure wasn't clear - was just gross. It's made me very nervous to tank, even though I really want to, and really enjoy playing my brewmaster. Thus, I really appreciate the 'mindset' and 'confidence' notes in your video. You also raise excellent points about the UI (I've just installed ElvUI and plan on re-doing the proving grounds to make sure I 'have it down').

      Threat management + aggro management fears. A group/raid performs better when they know the tank can hold aggro. Who doesn't want to succeed at their role?

  • @TheMiig1513
    @TheMiig1513 8 лет назад

    Really, really great video man. Personally I knew everything, but the majority of tanks don't and this is precisely what they were lacking. Another important piece of knowledge is to know your healers and dps's. Knowing the cooldown of your healers spells, knowing what spells they have, what cc's, etc. The same goes for dps's, but don't expect them to sacrifice dps to root mobs or cast a shield or dispell. I found tanking a lot easier when I had experience healing and tanking, the same with the other roles.
    To this day I still want to try have a group in 5man dungeons, where both tank, healer and all 3 dps's cooperate and play as a team, using every little spell and ability, timing everything and helping each other out. I think you can do every dng from 15 to 99 in pretty much one (or few) pulls.
    So far I have only tried tank, healer and 1 dps to teamwork, guess everyone is too much to ask. :( just a little dream of mine.
    This got waay too long.. great vid, great info, I'm sure it's helpful.
    If you did read it all, thank you, have a great day!

      +TheMiig1513 Here here! I too dream of the perfect dungeon/raid group, where everyone knows their role and each other. Hard to find, but if you really want to try, look for a raiding guild. Most of them have a set raid team already, but you can find ones that have secondary "training" teams, or guilds that want to build a team (and are serious about it) where you can all learn together. This actually can create astounding raid teams, if everyone is committed to the process. Another way to start is using a 3 person team to run scenarios. This is more difficult, as most scenarios are set up to let 3 dps types succeed fairly easily, but if you all decide to force your roles, it can be a learning experience.

    how to tank as a hunter(for temporary purposes): spec your pet to tenacity,Gear yourself so yourself your pet gets more health and dmg(tenacity automatically gives them more health), let the healer know, mend pet is your friend, bring food to immediately refill their health out of combat, move pet is your friend, Learn to control their movements.
    best tank pets imo:Spiders,Bears,Wolves,Worms,Spirit Beasts,Core hounds,Devilsaurs,Ravagers and Clefthoofs.
    moths have a 10min cd rez, bring one, core hounds have a haste buff, spirit beasts can heal

    my first time going into a dungeon was on a rogue, and lets just say i sucked. so i tried out warlock, and its fun but despite having so many demons at the same time (most of them temporary) i still didnt get high dps. then i tried holy priest, and it was pretty fun being able to bring somebody back from the dead or give them a scare by last minute healing them if they are dps and pull. but i made a paladin recently, and i love tanking with it! i have only had 1 group complain and kick me, and it was for something i didnt do (a monk decided he was gonna pull the entire room because he was tired of waiting for me to loot and see where we needed to go). im level 59 right now and the only person in my family who tanks, so its hard not having somebody to complain to about when the healer decides to take off and get themselves killed because they "dont have time for this". my dad plays healer, so at least we can both talk about how irritating it is when dps pulls and thinks they're invincible because they have a healer. i only ever have to use my self-heals when there is a cocky dps that pulls and i need to take back the aggro and pull the whole instance in the process, causing the healer to run out of mana fast. in case anybody was wondering, the dps class that tries to pull the most is monk...

    new player here. Just tanked freehold. Big bosses were easy to tank it was pretty much like mobs in quests. Multi enemies was way more challenging. I didn't have control. Didn't zoom out for example. But the party was great I told them it was my first dungeon. I died once too many pirates being aggroed by pets and stack wipe after 2 bosses. We managed to clear the dungeon tho. Definitely got to improve on crowd control. First off doing it on multiple mobs after I get the basics get in that dungeon :P

    I had full heirlooms with my Death Knight and I was scared trying to tank. I got confident after my first Sunken Temple instance with ease.
    Now I'm level 95 and did my first Auchindoun normal mode, I had a party member rage on me for the first time. I didn't see him request mana and he started raging. Once I got to the boss Azzakel, I noticed all these adds started popping out. For some reason, I hesitated in moving all over the area to pick them up. In my mind the dps will get annoyed with me moving the boss all over the place. Then after the fight, I saw tons of damage being dealt to the party. The healer raged and put me in the spot light again.
    Yes, tanking can be scary if you don't really know what you're doing and new to it.

    Hi there I just started a couple of weeks ago and I've found your guide very informative especially the movement part. Was wanting to ask do you have or know any gear guides/videos. Thanks

    I like to think myself as a vet tank; but stopped when MoP came out (not because I don't like the theme, but because I wanted good grades in college). I'm curious to know why you skipped over Q and E strafing? I guess it's no different than holding left click and pressing A or D, but it helps clickers (like myself) have access to our abilities.
    Swell mindset video though! I never really thought about tanking as controlling the encounters. Starting them for sure, but not the entirety of the fight. For myself, I just jumped head first into boss fights, learned as a guild of what works and what doesn't, and used CDs accordingly.

      Most people find that 'Q' and 'E' are perfectly located for a re-bind - Close to the movement keys - Using A and D has helped me massively for strafing and tanking

      XxHikidashixX Most tanks bind Q and E to interrupt, taunt or AOE stun. Most good tanks don't click their spells :p

      It improves tanking performance, not necessarily makes them any better. :P

    Awesome video!
    I created a Blood DK towards the end of Mists and have done really well tanking in dungeons. WoD came out before I had a chance to try raid tanking, and now after about 6 months, I am getting back into playing WoW and leveling my DK to 100. I am excited to tank in WoD, but am a little nervous. I don't have a raid guild yet to help me learn to raid tank, so I will probably be starting out in LFR. I understand the basics of tanking and do it well, I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for Raid Tanking (especially in LFR) because I am a little nervous about there being two tanks and so many more people. Thank you in advance!

      Ali Cat in Heels the tanking experience in LFR is just awfull. Most of time is just a battle between you and the other tank for aggro, because most LFR tanks dont know what the hell they are doing. so i suggest you try to get a raiding guild as soon as possible, or maybe get into some pug groups first, so you get familiar with the fights and how they are played. ofc pugging is never ideal but its a good way to start. also as a tank you always want to have your consumables, meaning pots, flasks, food and runes, so you never have to depend on others to do your job right. besides all this i think this video pretty much covers the rest. hope it helps, cheers

    Healer here. Why do some groups run like clockwork. I can even do a little DPS. And others it seems like I'm spamming flash heal, and I still can't keep tank alive. Tank doesn't seem like he is pulling any more than others. Is it as simple as gear? Or is it the others not doing enough DPS?

    i find tanking harder whenever there is a rogue or druid in the group, they will ALWAYS try to pull for you, something i as a tank don't appreciate

      +Ballbuster Splinter Hehehe, my nemesis has always been a hunter. They just don't seem to be able to resist :) Still, it's a tank's job to deal with these little challenges. When I have one in the group, I just figure I need to pull a little sooner...

    I know how to be a good tank, but is really dificullt if someone else in your gruop have righteous fury (paladin) or blood presence (death knight). This is the problem, because lot of people have this buffs and they are atracting enemy more than you. Do you have any tricks on it?

    In the case of a warrior or pally tank, should you use a faster 1h or a slower 1h? And whats the reasoning behind it?

  • @AllenAbbadonia
    @AllenAbbadonia 8 лет назад

    I'm really interested in tanking, but I keep being scared for various reasons. Recently, I started to play my first tank-a protection paladin-and I've loved playing this character more than any other.
    Everything was going okay until I started to get past the easy levels-I think it was up about level 40+ I started to run into problems.
    I don't know how to do anything that you need to know about these levels, Or where to correctly learn them. I don't know how to find out what kind of gear I need or how to tell if it's good for my character.
    At this point I would be willing to completely remake the character on a different server if there was a guild willing to teach me to tank properly, or even just a cool person who would. I've never even done a raid in my life or gotten to max level, and not being able to play this character properly is holding me back :c
