ORCHID EXPERIMENTS: Rescuing small divisions under semi-water culture

- WARNING: This is not a how-to video! In this section I want to share the methods I follow when the regular ones don't work out. Today I want to show you what I do with those small annoying divisions I get everywhere. Giving very small divisions is a very common practice around here, which is a very bad idea, because those divisions are not very likely to survive, especially if they don't have any roots to support themselves. But I still keep them and try many crazy methods to keep them alive... everything is a bit more difficult as I cannot get Sphagnum moss, but with a little bit of patience it works out in the end.

This method is a transitional stage for orchids with few or no roots, in order to keep them hydrated while they adapt to their new media and grow a new rooting system. Although I have kept a couple of orchids in SWC for almost two years, I still don't dare to say that SWC is a good method for growing healthy orchids in the long term. Muy buen video, muchas gracias por compartir. Tengo una orquídea que me la dejaron porque se estaba secando, no tenia experiencia en el manejo de orquídeas; pero la regué regularmente y le coloque un plato para maceta en la base. El agua del riego se acumula en la base y siempre trato que tenga un nivel o altura de uno a medio centímetro permanentemente. La planta tiene algunas raíces cuyas puntas tocan el agua y de allí la absorben. Así ha estado la planta por dos años y ha producido dos varas de flores casi permanentemente, con más de 12 flores por vara.
Asimismo, en la parte superior de las raíces le coloque una capa de musgo que obtuve del que crece en el piso en lugares húmedos. La riego con una botella aspersora regando el musgo y de allí baja lentamente pasando del musgo a las raíces, hasta la base de la maceta.
Hola Teófilo! A mí también me gusta dejar platos con agua en la base de mis orquídeas, en especial las que están afuera porque a veces las temperaturas son muy altas y no hay suficiente humedad, así que si te funciona, no hay problema. Respecto al musgo, esa medida no me ha funcionado. Por alguna razón las raíces entran en contacto con el musgo y mueren, no sé si es el entorno, la humedad o la calidad del musgo, que es reciclado de otras plantas importadas que traen musgo de Sphagnum, ya que donde vivo está prohibido usar musgo local pues usualmente los vendedores lo arrancan de su hábitat natural. En todo caso, si ha funcionado para ti, está muy bien! Te recomendaría, sin embargo, que estuvieras pendiente de la calidad del sustrato y de si ya está lo suficientemente degradado para que sea hora de cambiarlo. En ese caso podrías estar considerando un trasplante cuando lo creas necesario. Gracias por compartir tus consejos y espero que sigas teniendo lindas flores!

Hello Glenda, I think it really depends on each State's regulations. Here, for example, it is quite difficult to get plants outside or inside the country, even seeds. There are certain plants that cannot be transported (e.g., because they belong to endangered species) and mostly you need licenses to trade plants on a larger scale. I suggest that every time you consider to transport plant across state lines, you check the regulations first to make sure that everything is in order

Antonia, I just watched this again. Actually, I think it is the 4th time I have watched it. It just amazes me how this works. I have 3 Phals that I am trying this on. So far, so good. I have new roots showing and growing. I will get to my Cattleya's soon. Thank you again for showing us how you do this.
Susan's prairie orchids Oh thank you very much for your comment! This is an original idea of my mom. I was so tired of having small divisions doing so poorly, I was just watching them die despite my care. One day I was about to throw away a yellow Cattleya which I thought it was already a lost cause. My mom told me to give it to her, she was thinking to put it in water and see what happens. I told her that it would certainly rot to which she replied that it would die anyway, so I let her do what she wanted. After that, it has been a lot of trial and error and we are still trying to improve the method, but it really have helped our small rootless divisions. I hope you can succeed trying this and please let me know about the process so we can learn together!

Antonia tienes alguna formula casera para hacer que salgan nuevos brotes estimular el crecimiento? Aquí en Venezuela no esta fácil conseguir productos.
+Carolina PEREZ R Hola! Lo importante para el crecimiento es luz y la aplicación de fertilizante para orquídeas de la forma correcta. Hay algunos productos orgánicos que dicen que ayudan al crecimiento, como el té de boñiga, aunque nunca lo he probado y supongo que la calidad difiere en todas partes, así que no lo recomiendo, pero podrías intentarlo. Además de ello a mí me gusta moler cáscaras de huevo y añadirlas al sutrato para proporcionarle a las plantas una fuente extra de calcio. Sin embargo, la liberación del calcio puede ser muy lenta -meses- pero puede ayudarte bastante!

Voy a llevar a cabo tu experimento.Compré una Cattleya y una Phalaenopsis a bajo precio, ambas con las raíces muy podridas. Ambas estaban muy hidratadas y con hojas muy verdes, sin embargo, la cattleya no conserva ninguna raíz, así que haré el método de dejar la base de la planta en agua durante dos días y otro sin agua. La phalaenopsis tiene un par de raíces enteras, amarronadas, la he puesto en sustrato, no sé si sería mejor ponerla también en agua...ambas las humedezco con agua en las hojas para hidratarlas...

I really fancy the methods in this video. I am definitely going to try as I noticed my Phals are done blooming and suddenly all the leaves are "wrinkly" with visible veins. There is one with lovely roots but the leaves look dehydrated, so I will try this method. Then there is a rootless orchid and I have no idea what I'm going to do with her, and there is a third one, a Den, that is trying to grow new root. Thanks for sharing this. Feel free to give me some suggestions and tips on rehydrating my orchids and making them look pretty again.

Hola, Antonia. Me parece fabuloso lo que haces, los tres pasos, veré con calma el video y anotaré, sobre todo que se ve que lo haces bien por los resultados que muestran las orquídeas, es decir....para muestra, un botón (como decimos aquí).
A mi me pasó que me dieron un bulbo y lo coloqué dentro de una botella grande de refresco, le recorté la parte superior, puse raíz de helecho desmenuzada en el fondo, coloqué el bulbito paradito, lo amarré a un palito que inserté en el fondo y lo tapé, el sustrato lo humedecí primero. NO haz de creer que al tercer día ya tenía raices nuevas, pero comerí un error, de una vez como vi las raíces lo saqué y le amarré a un palito, pero ahora no ha sacado más raicitas. ¿Me puedes orientar en qué debo hacer? regresarlo a botella o qué podría hacer? Gracias de antemano.
Elena Corvera Oooohhh yo hice lo mismo muchas veces al principio. Apenas veía raíces nuevas de una lo sacaba de experimento y lo trasplantaba normalmente. El problema es que como nosotras vivimos en un área tan caliente, las raíces están tan jóvenes que en realidad no logran absorber la humedad que necesitan, se estresan, vuelven a "dormirse" y la orquídea puede quedarse así o seguirse secando. Lo importante en mi caso ha sido la "fase dos", que es dejar el sustrato muy húmedo al principio e ir dejando que se seque paulatinamente. Como tú tienes las orquídeas montadas, creo que lo mejor es que todos los días las sumerjas por varias horas de manera que reciban toda la hidratación que necesitan y las raíces puedan secarse de noche. Si ves que la orquídea está muy enferma puedes regresarla a la botella de nuevo, pero trata de hidratarla por unos días a ver cómo te va. Gracias por ver el video!

Thank you! I will try your semi-water method with one my mature cattleya that lost roots being resold, but having two new small growths now in my environment. Nothing else helped me. Lava rock helps only if a catt. has at least 1-2 alive roots.))

That changed in my most recent videos, though, because I realized that people had a hard time reading and I had a hard time communicating everything that I wanted to say. Growth on orchid leaves depend mostly on the direction of the light source, where is the sun light at your growing space coming from? Also, it may depend on the type of orchid and how you pot them. i must say ...this is the best video i have come across so far...it is exactly wat i was looking for. i am new to orchids. i recently bought a couple of seedlings n one of them died already. i am currently trying to save 2 others from dying as well. my question is.where did u keep the plants while experimenting ...did they get direct sunlight n how much light did they get. 2nd question...if my new leaf of the dendrobium got yellow n dropped of will the orchid die?

Yes, for this experiment, location is key. If you are trying to rescue Cattleyas, direct sunlight will encourage their development but it is important to keep high ventilation around the plant, to reduce the risk of rotting. About the second question: if new leaves fall from a dendrobium under this experiment you have to look whether new roots or keikis are developing. Sometimes, as the plant is trying to be rescued (and hence is stressed) dendrobium canes cannot mature completely before trying to reproduce. However, if you don't see any signs of recovery (no new roots or keikis) then you should examine the plant to see if there is any illness/pest going on. Después de haber iniciado con mucho interés el experimento que tuviste a bien compartir, el cual por cierto me estaba dando indicios de que podría tener algunos resultados positivos, pues se fue al traste porque un accidente que me mantuvo postrado un mes en la cama.

Para mi desgracia, hubo unas bebés (orquídeas) que hoy nos ven desde el cielo de orquídeas. Es por esto con las que se mantuvieron vivas, las tendré que reubicar otra vez en corteza de pino y carbón vegetal.

Espero en un futuro no muy lejano, reitentar el método. En vías de mientras, seguiré atento a tus publicaciones. Desde estos lares del mundo te seguiré viendo y leyendo.

Ooohhh entiendo tu dolor :( de hecho, a mí me sucedió lo mismo. Apenas comencé a trabajar tiempo completo tuve que reducir los experimentos, pues estos requieren mucha dedicación. En ese ànimo de que sigas experimentando y mejorando tu mètodo. Tu mètodo que a todos tus fan's como yo nos sirve mucho, te comento:
Apliquè el mètodo a orquìdeas sin raìz, a una bromelia bebè (sin raìces), y a unos pseudobulbos viejos. En un primer momento, las orquìdeas intentaron desarrollar raìces, pero despuès ya no desarrollaron raìces, pero si hijos. Incluso esto ùltimo tambièn en la bromelia y en los pseudobulbos.
Espero que esa informaciòn sea de utilidad.

Thanks for this very informative video! Today I will try this with a rootless division of one of my cattleyas (you can see a photo of the division at my G+ page). I divided my plant, and the backbulb division has no roots, and 4 bulbs (one of them is tiny and leafless). I don't know if it even has any valid eyes, the ones I saw are dry and black. But it's worth trying! Tonight it will go into stage 1, according to your video. 😊 I will let you know how it turns out! How long does it normally take to start making new roots? I guess I will have to add reminders in my calendar, so I remember when to remove it from water and when to put it back in water again. 😊
Hi Andrea! I'm very glad that you give this a try and I'm looking forward to the plant's progress! Regarding the time a plant takes to develop new roots, it is hard to tell and I realized that it is very case-specific. Some divisions take just a few weeks while others may take up to two months. I think it depends on the plants' conditions and the weather. I just saw the picture you posted and I'm very optimistic about the results. I wish you all the best with this new orchid project and a very happy growing!

Hi Antonia, thanks for sharing your orchid experiment. Could you please advise on the water level in stage 1.... is the orchids rhizome and pseudobulb's submerged under the water OR is the rhizome and pseudobulb's suspended just above the top of the water ? Thanks again
Louis Sternar That is a good question. In case the division has a few roots, try that the the water just stays in contact with the roots. Now, if the orchid has no roots at all, you can submerge just the rhizome. It won't rot if 1. you keep it ventilated enough, 2. You keep the orchid submerged not for long (I might say maximum two days in my conditions) and 3. If the rhizome cut is dry, I mean, if the rhizome has no "wounds" in contact with the water. If you observe your orchid everyday and notice some dark spot forming in the rhizome, cut the dead tissue, disinfect the wound, wait for the wound to become dry and then submerge it again for a lesser period of time.Hope it helps. Tengo una phalaenopsis a la que se pudrieron las raíces, pregunté en una floristería y me dijeron que cortara todas las raíces podridas y me he quedado sólo con tres, he transplantado a mi orquídea con sustrato nuevo; pero no sé si sea lo mejor o cómo ayudarla a tener nuevas raíces
Hola Daniela! Si vives en un entorno que presente alta humedad en el aire puede que tu método funcione muy bien. Sin embargo, si vives en un ambiente demasiado seco y cálido, tu orquídea podría presentar problemas para adaptarse al nuevo sustrato. El método que propongo en este video podría ayudarte; en este momento lo estoy intentando con Phalaenopsis, aunque también debe hacerse con mucho cuidado para no provocar pudriciones en la corona. Great Video! My question is: which method proved to be the fastest way to get a rootless orchid to grow new roots? I have a Mini-Cattleya that has no roots currently, and would like to save it!
+birdluvrs I use SWC/FWC methods for desperate cases of rootless/dehydrated orchids. You have to be careful with stem rot but if you are disciplined with the routine and provide the plant with enough aireation, it will have more chances of surviving. Saludos! No entiendo que relación hay entre que el pote es pequeño con que la orquídea reciba un shock al transplantarla. Qué elementos son los que afectan, se le lastiman las raíces? no le gustan los espacios grandes?
Hola Madeline! Las raíces naturalmente buscan aferrarse a la superficie de los árboles. En los potes intentan hacer lo mismo, por lo que si el pote es muy grande, la planta se demora mucho más en aferrarse a las paredes y así tener suficiente estabilidad. Una orquídea que no es estable tiende a sufrir heridas en las raíces, sobre todo si estas están en crecimiento. Cuando una raíz en crecimiento recibe un golpe, sacudida o se quiebra, es muy probable que cese de crecer y se vuelva inactiva, lo que retrasa una mejor hidratación y por ende el crecimiento y recuperación de las plantas.
Ok, gracias. Había escuchado algo de que era mejor plantar las orquídeas en tiestos pequeños porque les gusta tener las raices apretadas.

Hi Antonia, Really great tips, I've recently purchased couple catts and got them repoted today, also have a Brassocattleya that seems to be struggling with hydrating it self, can I put these directly in step 2? they do have few roots but no new growths. How long to you keep the step 2 orchids moisten?
+Scott Mcfields hi Scott! If your Bc. has enough roots you can put them directly in step 2. You need to wait until the Cattleyas start growing new roots that eventually replace the older ones. Once the new roots grow down into the media, you progressively decrease the water level, and the stage two will be completed once the new roots reach the bottom of the pot, or once there are enough new roots so the plant can sustain itself under your normal watering schedule. Hola de nuevo! si bien el musgo retiene suficiente agua como para mantener tu orquídea hidratada por al menos dos semanas, tienes que tener en cuenta cómo se han desarrollado las raíces que ya tienes. Si las raíces que tienen están acostumbradas a la circulación del aire, no te recomendaría que lo hicieras, pues dos semanas en musgo puede ocasionar que se pudran las raíces. Una solución "intermedia" mientras estás de viaje sería que pusieras el musgo debajo de las raíces, de manera que éstas estén en contacto -pero no sembradas- en él. Así las raíces pueden absorber el agua del musgo sin el riesgo de pudrirse. No obstante tienes que recomendarle a alguien el riego de tu planta: en el estado en el que actualmente está, un descuido puede ser fatal. Una planta saludable puede aguantar tu ausencia tres semanas, pero siempre cuando nos vamos de viaje las que más sufren son las plantas enfermas. Espero que todo salga bien, saludos!

That is a very important question and indeed, with this experiment you have to be extremely careful with the new roots. You don't want to disturb them when you handle the orchid and therefore I recommend the following:
Stage 1: use a narrow pot that holds the pseudobulbs firmly, such as a vase or glass
Stage 2: prioritize the stability of the plant (with sticks or garden wire) and add the media very gently while repotting
And always: be very careful when handling the orchid! Because new roots are the only chance it has to adapt and survive.

Si las hojas son gruesas como las de una orquídea Phalaenopsis, pero se ven como flojas y tienen arruguitas, la planta se encuentra deshidratada, ya sea por muy poco riego, o por demasiado riego que hizo que las raíces se pudrieran. Si sientes que es porque a la planta le falta agua, puedes incrementar la frecuencia con la que la riegas, pero si sientes que hay agún problema con las raíces, es mejor que la trasplantes. I just found a cheaper media. Lava rock it looks like is working. I use a glass jar fill it with lava rock the same way you use the bark and put in about 1" of water. It is nice to see how the water goes up. Just in case you want to experience. I like the space between the rocks that allows the roots to breath. How are your orchids lately? Jokha Mohamed The water level at stage 2 should be slightly below the new root tips, so it maintains the media moist enough and lead the new roots towards the media without being soaked. The orchids at the beginning did already develop new and long roots, so if I keep the water level too high for a long time the new roots might rot. The orchid at the end was just potted into phase 2, so it had only a few root tips, not very long, that is the reason the water level was higher in this one. A quick update: all these orchids are now in phase 3!! ^^ If you have any other question do not hesitate to post it, thanks for watching!

Hello Charlene, first of all we need to know the main problem that is affecting the orchid's health:
1. Is the stem turning dark and/or are pseudobulbs turning dark and mushy? - if so, the orchid may be suffering from stem rot and you should treat that problem first
2. Why are the roots dying? Are they drying off and turning papery? (lack of watering) or are they turning dark and mushy? (too much watering) - the former needs to be adressed by providing more hydration to the orchid. The latter should be solved by letting the roots dry out completely first, and then see whether it is necessary to repot/rescue the orchid. It would be necessary if the orchid doesn't count on enough roots to hydrate. There might be the case also in which the roots start drying out while they release their chlorophyll, that might be because of root shock after a drastic change in media. In that case, the method of this video might help.
So, after you realize what's the main issue with you orchid we can find a solution to it and rescue your plant. Please let me know what you find out and any other question don't hesitate to write me!

Hola Johan! Por ahí tengo un par de videos sobre trasplantes de zapaticos y cymbidiums en inglés pero eso fue hace unos años y aunque las orquídeas se encuentran bien, ya no estoy muy contenta con la mezcla de sustrato que usé... :S actualmente uso uno que compro en Orquídeas Katía, de consistencia muy fina que tiene chips de coco, turba y perlita. Si lo veo necesario le agrego un poquito más de turba y un poquitín (no mucho) de tierra. La otra semana voy a trasplantar una Paphiopedilum y si me da el material, publico el video para que puedan ver el sustrato que uso en este caso, pero entre la edición y todo ello, podría estar un poco demorado. Cuándo hago un transplante por división de orquídea estoy usando una mezcla de 2 Ml de Bayfolan y 1 Ml de Superthrive en un litro de agua. Con eso hago aspersiones en la raiz y hojas y después ponía corteza de pino, carbón vegetal y un poco de fibra de coco. Aunque cuándo haga otro transplante aplicaré tu método.
Qué opinas al respecto de la mezcla de Bayfolan y Superthrive?

Muchísimas gracias por ver mis videos y suscribirte a mi canal :D Me parece que la mezcla está bien siempre y cuando no produzca quemaduras en las raíces y no promueva el crecimiento de otras plantas o algas invasoras en el sustrato. Es una buena idea para suplir las necesidades nutricionales de la planta mientras se establece, lo cual yo trato de cubrir con fertilizante foliar. Este método es para suplir la necesidad de hidratación, que es bien urgente, sobre todo en ambientes tan secos con el mío. Yo diría que encontrando un balance entre el agua y los nutrientes tus orquídeas se establecerían mejor y más rápido. Un abrazo y gracias de nuevo!

Maravilloso, inicié el experimento con unas orquídeas (10 para ser exactos) y al menos en tres ya tengo resultados. Sì, sì en menos de una semana. Si bien, las raíces todavía no brotan, los "hijos" (no sè si a todos los hijos se les pueda llamar keikis) cobraron brìo.
Permíteme comentar que en los primeros 2 dìas de la fase 1, usé un fertilizante que impulsa el desarrollo de raìces (Peters 9-45-15 Plant Starter). Utilicé el prodcuto muy rebajado, del gramo por litro que recomiendan, usé un gramo por 4 litros de agua.
Despuès de dejarlas secar por un día, la nueva inmersiòn en agua usé 2 Ml de Bayfolan y 1 Ml de Superthrive por litro de agua.
Los hijos de las tres orquídeas estàn "chulos de hermosos" (es decir muy bonitos).
Hasta el momento voy ahì.

+Carlos Daniel Velez Loyola The most important aspect to keep in mind besides constant hydration is providing the light exposure and temperature range the plant needs. In other words, not stressing your orchid. If you are trying to promote root growth in a Cattleya under low light and relatively low temperatures, it won't continue developing no matter how well you perform the experiment. If you try to promote root growth in an Odontoglossum, for example, under the heat and direct sun, it won't develop either. There are people who use root hormone (I haven't tried it) but basically what you need is not stressing your orchid and lead it to focus only on producing roots.

Eu tenho uma única orquídea na água de um ano e meio ... mas ainda não se atrevem a generalizar. Talvez em alguns anos pode ser 100% de certeza que ele funciona ... mas por agora eu gostaria de ter orquídeas em água somente quando eu preciso de resgate.

Hola! En este momento ando adelantando algunos experimentos con Phalaenopsis. Los resultados han sido buenos, y espero compartir ese video muy pronto. Por ahora, algunos consejos que doy a partir de mi experiencia es procurar nunca dejar mojada la corona y ser un poco más pacientes, pues con las Phals se puede entrar a la etapa 2 cuando las raíces estén más largas. Of course I will tell you :) Here in Colombia we live in a natural environment for many moss species, but that caused much trouble in the past, because people used moss indiscriminately for decorating (in particular) Nativity scenes during Christmas. Mosses are vital for storing water in some of our ecosystems and massive human consumption almost endangered them. Therefore, it is now illegal to take them out from their natural environment and to sell/buy them. I think it might be possible to import Sphagnum moss or to grow it in greenhouses, but I still don't know the legal boundaries for that. I am consulting an Ecologist friend of mine and I will have an official response for you soon ^^ So far I haven't found Sphagnum moss in gardening stores but if I ever find it here, legally grown and commercialized, I will be very happy! Still searching...

En que lugar de Estados Unidos vives...cómo es el clima de alli?
Hola Felisa! Tengo una serie de videos que abordan preguntas y respuestas sobre el método y en ellos respondo las inquietudes que tienes, pero en términos generales la cantidad de agua depende de qué tan largas son las raíces. Si tu orquídea no tiene raíces, es recomendable que el agua toque ligeramente la base de la corona (para el caso de las orquídeas monopodiales) o el tallo (para las orquídeas simpodiales) siempre dejando secar las estructuras por unos días para evitar la pudrición. Si tu orquídea tiene raíces, es importante que el agua toque las puntas, buscando no mojar ni la corona ni el tallo de las plantas, pues no es necesario y así se minimiza el riesgo de pudrición. Otro youtuber me hablo de este metodo para recuperar una phalaenopsis a la que regaron en exceso y se le han podrido las raices, esta en bastante mal estado y habia pensado probar lo de la aspirina( acido salicilsalicidico) para estimular el crecimiento de raices nuevas, que opinas?

What kind of water did you use?
I use tap water and so far it works. However, you should take into account how hard is tap water in your region. If it is too hard, you could use rain water or distilled water instead.

Hello Marlon! I have not tried growing an orchid seedling under this method yet, but I guess in that case you have to 1. guarantee proper light and nutrition to such tender plant and 2. Wait for longer, a couple of years maybe. Are you planning to grow seedlings under SWC?

She arrives at sunrise and leaves at sunset, and just sits around or looks for food when she's hungry. She isn't afraid of us and doesn't run away when we approach her so she's kind of a non-official pet for me now ^^
