  • just a simple informative video about the procedure. the timing side bushings come out of and go into the case in the direction opposite of what i describe, but the concept is the same.

    Great video.
Actually you can drop a thin steel washer into the blind hole to protect the case and then tap in. The 7/8 tap will butt against the washer and start drawing out the old bushing. It helps to heat the case a bit with a flame around the bushing boss. If the bush doesn't begin lifting out when the tap butts against the washer in the blind hole then it's better to finish the job with a 7/8 bolt like you did, but use a slide hammer. I don't suscribe to holding the bolt in a vice then pounding the case as you can easily crack the case that way.
For the timing side bushings it's best to turn down a 3 inch length of hard steel rod. If you don't have a lathe then a machine shop can do it for you. Turn down 1 inch that just fits inside the bushing (I.D.) and turn the remaining 2 inches 5-8 thousanths (O.D) less than the hole the bushing fits into. Set the case timing side up on a hard flat surface. Heat the area around the bushing with a butane torch. Squirt some Krol around the edge of the bushing, Now place the bushing punch you made inside the bushing and gently but firmly tap it with a copper hammer. The bushing should chase out easily. If it looks to be stuck then by all means stop and finish the job using using a c-clamp, or a bearing press if you're lucky enough to have one. Under no circumstances should you keep hammering if the bushing refuses to budge.
You can use the homemade bushing chaser to fit the new bushings and you have a neat tool for future jobs.

I've done the following: get the alloy cases squeaky clean, wait for the wife to be out of the house, put the cases in the oven, heat to about 300 degrees. The bronze bushes and bearing races sometimes just fall out with a little tapping. Or while hot, drop an ice cube into the bush to shrink it.

Regarding the bush removal,-drive - side, I find sliding a suitably heavy "mass" up the bolt,(your choice of object , many options ), and upon hitting the bolt head suitably hard
Several times , with suitable care, the bush behaves well and is removed with ease.
In case no vice is at hand , or whatever.
    Ride safe!

Hughie's dvd, Wes' dvd, and all the books I've read didn't say anything about reaming being necessary. I discovered the hard way after I put in the bushings on my pre-unit. Thanks for the video.

Just out of curiosity, how did you turn that reamer? I had to drill a hole in my reamer to run a bar thru it to turn it in the bushing. 10/4 on leaving the hammer in the tool box. I machined a tube and used a bolt with a long thread on it with a nut to as a puller.

I wish someone had pointed this out to me when I was a lad rebuilding pre unit Thunderbird, breather valve stuck open and drenched my nice new TT100 tyre in oil, that'll be why it was a bit hairy cornering!!!!!!

    Hi,
I'm putting together a t120 I bought in a box. I can't find anything on assembling the cams themselves. is there a spacer behind the keyway? it looks like the key spaces the cam off of the bushing. also with the case together the cams play about 1/4" in and out, and there is scaring on the case where it looks like the lobes hit the case, but the cams look fine and were probably replaced on a previous build. I have a pdf manual but it doesn't show cam assembly. Also mine is a 73 650 that t140 timing gears that are marked A and B, and the information I found is A keyed to the mark on the exhaust side and B on the intake side, do you know if that is valid? Most T120's were marked dashes and dots. The guy who took it apart marked them but didn't mark intake or exhaust.
    Thanks,
    Avery

This is way-too-late of a response, but I bought the reamer tool kit from British Cycle Supply in NJ.

recently found out after i ordered the very same thing for 90 bucks... its just a 13/16 reemer 25$ with a collar that can be machined on a lathe by anyone for about 20$ and a gauged ball bearing 7/8 about 10$ but if you want a guarantee and no fuss go british cycle supply for sure.
