Jaime *fookin'* Lannister is one of the most fascinating characters of the ASOIAF universe. One of my favorites.

Olenna and Tyrion, Lord of Light stuff, Shireen, Jaime, Unsullied and their names, Tywin and his arranged marriages... So many good scenes makes this episode one of the best for me. Cant wait for the discussion!

*BY WHAT RIGHT DOES THE WOLF JUDGES THE LION? BY WHAT RIGHT!* My Favorite scene in Game of Thrones ever. You not only see a dramatic change in perception of a character but get to be witness in a way of GoT lore by having one of the participants tell the tale.

Robb can't just simply retreat to the North. It's may be not clear in the show but he was named a King not only by northmen but by all lords of Riverlands even by Paramount Lord( Remember Edmure Tully and Brinden Tully address him Your Grace). In the books Robb's title is actually King of the North and Trident. So if northmen leave they will abandon all Riverlands to Lannister for sake. It's funny but becoming a King more weakened Robb than made him stronger.

To me, the themes of this episode are what make it great. The conversation between Jaime and Brienne is juxtaposed with the one between Barristan and Jorah. Barristan said that a man of honor keeps his vows no matter what, so his answer to the question Jaime asked Brienne is yes-he would have killed his own father and stood by while thousands died, thus 'keeping his honor.' Obviously, what Jaime did was right, though everyone hates him for it. Interesting stuff.

Olenna just devours every scene she’s in.
Love the Lord of Light musical theme, you hear it in its full glory when Beric is revived by Thoros.
Pretty interesting use of the musical theme when Robb beheads the Karstark. It’s the same theme used when Theon beheads sir Rodrick at winterfell. I may be wrong, but I don’t think this theme is used in any other instance. Ironically it’s a play on the Greyjoy theme but is used here for Robb. [EDIT: I now remember this theme is also used when Theon unveils the burned bodies in Winterfell’s courtyard]
Jamie’s monologue is so good. Really makes you think about Ned’s relentless honor bound code and how it had no room for nuance or context in this instance, and a teenage Jamie was just dropped into this villain role by Ned and probably embraced it quite quickly.
And Tywin’s hammer drop to end the episode is so wild.
Love your watch through! Thanks for all the effort you put into these!

I'm pretty sure Jaime didn't want the milk of the poppy because he was afraid that the master would take too much of his arm once he was knocked out. I think it was the soldier in him who was afraid to lose any more of his abilities. But there are other theories about it ,too. In a more general sense, he couldn't trust anyone there -as a prisoner, he didn't want to let his guard down. Also, maybe he didn't want to be drugged and slipping in and out of consciousness and accidentally mention Cersei or anything relating to his kids. Some other person commented that Jaime is a control freak. He lost his sword arm, his main defense, so he feels vulnerable and sure as hell doesn't want to be unconscious while Qyburn cuts him up. These are from Reddit, I did not come up with them, but all of them make sense to me.

One thing I’ve always thought was interesting and this may be a continuity error is did you recognize that Stanis’ daughter, Shireen has dirty blonde hair? If you remember Ned Stark, based on the Great Book of Houses, determined that Joffrey was Jamie and Cersei’s because Joffrey had blonde hair and every Baratheon listed in the book had black of hair. But, here we have Robert’s brother, Stanis, black of hair and his wife, black of hair, produce a dirty, blonde hair child which goes against the Book of Houses - Baratheon - black hair lineage. So, if Robert’s brother and wife can produce a dirty blonde hair child - then why couldn’t Robert (black hair) and Cersei (blonde hair) produce a blonde hair child?
One possible solution is as Shireen is kept locked up maybe she was never observed and added to the Book of Houses so no one knew a Baratheon had blonde hair- or - maybe only men are in the book. I only seem to remember Ned reading men’s names. But, Shireen’s dirty blonde hair is a potential debunk that maybe, just maybe, some of Cersei’s children are not all Jamie’s but could be Roberts!

Kerry Ingram who plays Stannis' daughter Shireen, has a form of osteogenesis imperfecta. Sie has regularly fractured her bones and needs infusions to increase her bone mass.
