  • Another addition to our little group of classic cars. The common ones not! Another fairly rare car to be seen in the circuits: A 'survivor' 1966 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight (98 for short!) 4-door hardtop! Original paint, kind of worn, but still has a shine, and the interior is perfect save for one tear near the driver seat position, it can be repaired. We don't think this car has seen salt, perhaps a bit of wet weather in its life, for every ground is intact, every fluid line is in perfect shape, the floor and frame are in very good condition. We will see where this adventure leads to. Corvairwild as usual has a hand in this one, i would like to thank him for helping me to relive a childhood memory, for we had a very similar 1965 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight.

    Just a note. It’s been repainted, so you need not call it a “survivor”. There was no clear coat in ‘66 to be peeling like that. Otherwise, wish mine looked that good.

    • @SammyVista1972
      @SammyVista1972  3 года назад

      The car was original paint. There were, correctly as you know, some spots repainted. Whatever it is that is not important. The car caught fire while we were on the highway at 60 miles an hour. It was traced to a new defective fuel pump. We were very lucky to get out of the car. We are going to fix the car we have all the parts needed, the fire department got there quick enough. The front fenders and Hood and interior was damaged by fire and smoke. The car is definitely not going to be a survivor anymore

    It was the 66’ Olds 98 Luxury Sedan or LS for short.
    My friends dad bought one brand new, gold/black interior. Behind the front seat was a vanity mirror and tissue dispenser. We were kids but when my friend was old enough to drive the Olds was still in the family and smooth and fast still. This car had well over 300,000 miles with one overhaul and one overhaul of tranny. Then soon the compression was nothing and black smoke pouring out exhaust. $200 gone for a 76’ Cutlass Supreme ordered. I’ve owned nine Oldsmobile’s. From 88 to 98 to 442 and Cutlass. Toronado I had two.
    The interior that was Luxury

    I live in the South and most of the cars in this class were air conditioned.

    • @SammyVista1972
      @SammyVista1972  5 лет назад

      Yes indeed, I know that most of these cars came with air conditioning, but in Canada, from where this car was marketed as new, air conditioning was a very expensive luxury and back then, the Canadian standard of living was not as high as that in the US, so people had to be more frugal with their choices of options let alone having a fairly expensive car such as this one. These cars are quite rare in Canada actually. This one unfortunately got damaged by a fire early last year, but it is being repaired and an air-conditioned interior and components are going into it.

    I kind of figured this was a Northern car,being a luxury class car with no A/C. My dad and I each had one of those 1966 Olds 98s,his a 4 door LS sedan,mine was a convertible. The 425 is a great performing engine, you might want to switch to electronic ignition,otherwise it needs frequent tune ups,also, if it is to be driven frequently, I would strongly recommend a disc brake conversion for the front brakes,since the standard drums on this car are very prone to fading. I would not recommend sending a young person out in this car unless they have been warned about those brakes; they are quite poor by today's standards.

    That is a beautiful car! You'll get a lot of enjoyment out of it. I'm curious as to the "switch bitch" THM 400 transmission and torque converter. What do you mean by those? I have a 67 Impala SS with the 327 4V and THM 400. The transmission sounds and acts the same as any modern 4 speed automatic minus a gear. Bah53 on RUclips has a 63 Olds that has a different type of transmission that does sound different than modern transmissions. My Impala also has that rear defrost in the back deck; they're kinda cool. Great to see you back again!

    • @SammyVista1972
      @SammyVista1972  7 лет назад +1

      Thank you! We are already enjoying the car a lot! The Switch-Pitch Turbo 400 was offered by GM from 1965 to 1967 on Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillac vehicles. Controlled by electric switch and hydraulics, it gave the stator in the torque converter high and low angles of the blades, which in turn gave a high or low stall converter. At idle and over 1/2 throttle it is in high stall mode to prevent creep at traffic lights and, of course to light up the car and literally make it leap ahead when floored at speed. For economical cruise, and thus making it a very 'tight' converter, cruise is low stall. You lose only 100 RPM when at cruising speed between the impeller and turbine in the converter. GM did a beautiful job on this unit, but of course bean counters said no more after 1967 and the transmissions all had the single speed stall as your 327 has. Can you make your Chevy into a switch pitch? Yes you can, you need the oil pump and converter plus a few other small parts, and cap a hole in your Chevy transmission case. There are other tings to do with switches, ETC but it is a very doable process for most hobbyists is the classic car world. Bah53 has what is called a Roto-Hydramatic or Slim Jim is his '63. They were used until 1964. They are not a very refined transmission, it was first used by GM in 1961 as a cheaper alternate to the proven, but aging and very heavy original Hydramatic. 1-2 shifts (all from experience!) are very abrupt due to a coupling filling/emptying and 2-3 are very soft. One needs to understand these Slim Jims very well, and because of misunderstanding of critical adjustments, the units gained a pretty sour reputation. But in all honesty, they can't even come close to what the new for 1964 Turbo 400 is capable of.

      Wow! Thank you so much for all of the great information; it is greatly appreciated! Sorry I got the wording wrong (LOL), it was late when I watched your video. You're giving me a good understanding of these critters. My transmission does have the electric kick-down switch, but that's it. Never had a problem with that system either. As for converting it, that's a lot more work than I can do. Luckily, the transmission and engine have never been separated nor removed from the car; they're completely original and unrebuilt and it runs and shifts great at 225k miles. My grandparents bought the car brand new, so I do have the entire history of it. Thanks again for your knowledge and I look forward to hopefully more videos from you. Your collection of cars is fun and you make your videos very enjoyable to watch. Take care!
