- In this video, our good friend Mike shares his latest project with us, a 2006 Mud Buddy surface drive boat motor, powered by a Briggs 23 HP Vanguard V twin engine. He purchased the boat and motor at auction through Gov Deals and is anxious to assess its condition.
The pull cord is missing and the unit does nothing when we attempted to key start the 23HP Briggs engine. If we're able to get this unit running, we would like to assess its condition with our eyes and ears, in addition to performing a compression test on both cylinders.

That thing you bypassed is a mercury switch that makes sure the motor is out of the water when you start it. Might be a good idea to hook that up since there is no neutral. You can get launched out of the back and into that nightmare prop. I have one of these, and you can adjust the angle of that switch to make it so the prop can be less or more out of the water for it to turn over.
Ahhh! Makes sense! Thank you so much for the comment. So, if we tilt the prop up higher, we should get continuity through that switch. If we don’t, we have a bad switch and should replace it for safety’s sake? I will notify Mike, the motor’s owner. It’s crazy to me that it’s not mentioned in the service manual schematic.
