Great find with the round agate! Whenever you see a rock outcropping on a beach close to the water with a ledge on the backside, take some time to work that back area. Go slow and work down a fair distance. Heavy agates fall behind these areas and they don't tend to move as much as other lighter rocks. The same principle applies to a large log close to the waterline. Seawalls in front of a river running into the lake are also good agate spots.
I do usually check around logs, but so far that hasn't resulted in any agates. It's good to know that it's a good technique though. I'll keep doing it.

@@MichiganRocks, oh yes, those agates! I’ve still only found several agate-like rocks, so I enjoy seeing yours and the ones you work up. But to wander across the beach to find and pick up that huge gob had to be like winning a decent lottery! Whatever became of it?
@@MichiganRocks I understand not tumbling them, we run a great risk of grinding away some, or all, of the natural beauty that made us pick up the rock in the first place. What about putting them through your arbor? Do you not polish off the “rind” or make any changes? If I had a small bag of those, I might fit a new arbor into the budget just to try. That's great that you found so many cool rocks. I haven't hunted Yooperlites in the Keweenaw, but my sister has. Maybe later this summer when I'm up there I will.
I don't know if you could hear it in my voice, but I was pumped for quite a while after that one. Not everyone understands getting excited about finding a rock, but I know that people who watch my videos understand.
I don’t remember if I did that on this video or not. Probably not because it was so rough. If you don’t grab them quick, the waves will take them away.
The sound of breaking waves... I guess everyone likes it. We come from the oceans, must be a little residual DNA. It is harder to see the rocks without sunshine. Doesn't matter, love them all. TFS 💖🦅🦅
Beautiful place. Especially impressive scenes around 3:40 to 3:50. I'm always surprised how deserted your beaches are -- or appear to be. Seems like such lovely places would attract lots of people.
This beach is very popular. It was evening when I was here and very windy. I saw others on the beach, but I try not to get them in the shots. Most of the people were right near the parking lot. I walked maybe a mile down the beach to get away from most of them. A lot of the places I go on Lake Huron really are deserted. Sometimes I hunt for hours without seeing anyone else. Over on Lake Michigan (I was there today), there are people on every beach and they all seem to be looking for rocks.
That is a humdinger of an agate!! I have never been to Lake Superior, everything looks so RED! Someday I will make it up there, I have my rock hammer ready for the mine tailings :)
Not all beaches look red like this. There's a beach not too far from here (McClain State Park) where the rocks are all different colors. In the Eastern U.P. the rocks tend to be all different colors too.
Sometimes I'm out for longer, sometimes short trips. Sometimes I find a lot and others not so much. I try to just show the best finds so the videos don't get too boring. If you look through some of my older rock hounding videos, there are quite a few in the 20 minute range. I don't think it will matter if you watch some of those older videos, the content doesn't really get stale.
Are the rocks you show at the end polished in a tumbler? Is there a tumbler you would recommend? Do you identify the rocks when you get home? The agates all look so different.
I don't worry about identifying every rock I pick up. The rocks in the pictures at the end are wet, not polished. But those rocks are in the tumbler right now, so we'll see them polished sometime in the future! I'd recommend a Lortone tumbler. The 33B is a good one to start out with. The QT66 or QT12 are bigger and will tumble rocks a little faster if you want to spend more. The Rock Shed usually has the best prices. therockshed.com
This is a good spot. However, I've only been there for Yooperlites, not agates! I found a bunch of yooperlites here. I've found my best agates at Calumet Waterworks. Also, have you ever checked out the mineral museum at Michigan Tech?
I didn't hunt Yooperlites in the Keweenaw, but I found some in the eastern U.P. in June. The AE Seaman Mineral Museum is awesome. I love that place. My own family, sister and mom went there and there were oohs and aahs from the time we went in to the time we left.
@@MichiganRocks I just like to learn the different kinds. I pick up the ones that make me happy. I posted some in the rock identification page to see if I can get an idea.

I like green rocks too, but I felt like I was in a rut on this beach. They seemed like the only thing that looked good for a while there.
Great video Rob!!! You had to drive 7 hours? Wow.
Yeah, but I stayed for a few days, so it was worth it. I love the drive up there too, it's good scenery pretty much the whole way.
I could and would spend eternity on that shore , 🙃 Thanks for taking us with you, rocks and ASMR all in one 🙂. 7 HOURS 😧😮
it snowed already...
Well worth a seven hour drive for a few days up there.
It was in the thirties here this morning, but no snow yet.
I went fishing there once and ended up filling all my pockets full of rocks. imo one of the better beaches on the western side of the UP.
This is one beach that I always visit when I'm in this area.
Outstanding finds and such incredabley beautiful scenery..cant wait to see those rocks polished up !!!
They’re in the tumbler right now.
So many rocks, so little time.
You've got that right. I was very happy with this hunt.
Great finds ! That gorgeous agate topped it all 👍😍
It sure did!
That last agate was a beauty!!! Makes your heart jump a bit when you find them, right?!
I don't know if you could hear it in my voice, but I was pumped for quite a while after that one. Not everyone understands getting excited about finding a rock, but I know that people who watch my videos understand.
Superbly beautiful agate. If I ever found that I would make place of honor to display it.
Wow! You found some beautiful rocks! I love the green. We dont find many green in my part of MN. 😊
From my experience, Minnesota has a lot of red rocks.
I would have brought home every single rock you showed!!!
Excelente videos Amigo!!!
Un fuerte abrazo desde España!!!
¡Abrazos de regreso desde Michigan!
I saw a lot of green stones ! Love it
I was on a green kick that day.
Thank you for sharing!
I like it better if you show how you pick it up from the ground and with other rocks on the ground.
That is a nice agate anytime. You couldn't have tumbled it that way even if you tried. Blessed find.
I was thrilled with that one.
You were blessed with a beautiful agate !
I think that was the best one of the summer.
Thanks!
You're welcome!
I'm green with envy 😉
I get it, because of all the green stones. Ha ha!
Woohoo!!! Niiiice Agate man!!! Very excited 4 u!! Cant wait to see it polished!! Congrats, great find!!!!
I don't polish my own agate finds. I like to keep these just the way I found them.
Great Agates on that beach my dear
Yes, it was a great walk.
Really nice finds!!
I sure was happy with them.
Great Agates! Awesome for you, brother!
Lucky me for sure!
Wish your Videos were longer , I love the sound of the waves. You found some great stuff :)
Michigan Rocks , I was watching some of your older videos earlier and you have some great ones ; and they are over 20 minutes ☺️.
How did you know green was my favorite color.😁😁♥️
Just a hunch.
What a super agate!
Agreed. Lucky me!
Всегда с удовольствием смотрю Ваши видио, каждое из них - это увлекательное путешествие в мир природы. Спасибо.
Добро пожаловать. Я рада, что они тебе нравятся.
2 years ago.. Go back now!
I was there a couple times this summer, Jason. I go every year.
Amazing
You found some great ones! I have some rocks from my trip that I don’t know what they are. They caught my eye and I brought them home.
I don't know what a lot of the rocks I find are either. It doesn't bother me too much.
@@MichiganRocks I just like to learn the different kinds. I pick up the ones that make me happy. I posted some in the rock identification page to see if I can get an idea.
Cool finds, the bedrock looks awesome in the water. Would that be a good place to pan for gold? I was thinking the same thing, greens ones are standing out today.
