5:25 They call it galaxy stone or amygdaloidal basalt. It has little pieces of jasper and agates inside the host rock basalt. You said you didnt know what it was, so now you know ;) Great rocks today, you found more than your fair share of agates on this one, and your sister did great too!
I'm not sure why I said I didn't know what that one was. I do know it's amygdaloidal basalt. I think Agate Dad coined the term "galaxy stone". Is that true or did he get it from somewhere else?
@@MichiganRocks I figured you knew! yeah ive heard it from rookie rockhound too, but maybe one of them did make up the name, Im gonna have to ask them now! It is a catchy name, and not as long-winded too. I think it is really cool looking stuff, I wish we had it here in Oregon, as far as I know Ive never seen any here.
We find a lot of the green with lighter green spots here. The light green on top does polish, but the darker green doesn't polish very well. I still put them in the tumbler, mostly because I really like them.
Wow, so awesome as always. It was nice to meet your sister. Her art is amazing. Your videos are the best part of my week. The green rocks were really pretty.😍🥰😇💜💙💚
You do seem to enjoy them, Indyana. I have a lot of fun on Tuesdays and Fridays too. It's fun to interact with people like you. It's a really nice reward for putting work into the videos.
@@Indyanas_ocean_view Thanks, I feel like I'm getting to know some of the frequent commenters, but I don't know what most of you even look like. If we met on the beach, you guys would know me, but I wouldn't know you. It's sort of strange.
I appreciate your willingness to identify the beaches you visit. We went looking for your Norwood, MI, beach a couple works ago but only made it as far as the park and beach at the end of Rex Road near Norwood. LOTS of flat black rocks there, all shapes, amazingly thin. Treasure trove for your sister.
There are a couple beached I don't identify because they require crossing private property to get to. If it's a public beach though, I love to let people know where to go. I'm surprised at how many people have made trips to go to the beaches from my videos.
Had the pleasure of visiting McLain State Park for rock hunting and watched your video for inspiration and tips. The rock you show at 9:43 I believe is a variolitic basalt and should take a polish well. I found a couple little ones there too. Thanks and happy rockhounding.
Thanks Angela. Other people told me the same thing about that green rock. I have not had great luck tumbling them. I haven't tried them on a cab machine though. I should do that.
Thanks Davin. It was really fun to have Sally in the video with me and to show off her pebble art. What she does with rocks is so different than what I do, it was fun to share that with everyone.
Man, if you’re one of the lucky ones, there’s something about spending time with siblings that you come away refreshed. My brothers are honestly two of my greatest friends. It was really cool seeing you both hound together. It’s like home I reckon. Beautiful rocks man and I love prehnite, that’s actually the first rock I ever found. Still just looking at the package as I pack to move house, but thank you mate. I can’t wait to see what’s inside! Much love Rob!!!!
Oh no way!!!! Her art “between grandchildren” is definitely something I’d love in the office! What a family. Thanks for this one rob. I got feel goods all over!!!
Yes, it's always fun to spend time with my sisters (I have six of them). Rock hunting is something Sally and I have in common. It's nice that she lives in maybe the best rockhounding part of the state. There are lots of old copper mines, waterfalls, and beaches in her area. We even went way out in Lake Superior to an island on this trip. That video will be another day.
Great to meet your sister. Her art work is very cool. I learned about a couple new rocks today: prehnite and "magate" (I didn't think you'd spell it "maggot"). Don't think I've heard of either before. Good stuff Rob.
Oh man I want to go walk those rock beaches, I would definitely need to drive myself cause my rock collection would be HUGE! Nice pick ups! That rock sis had that was pink resembles rose quarts thanks for sharing!
I thought Sally’s picture frames were wonderful-the hikers was my fav!! Really neat finds in this video. The larger rocks you found ,with the bright red and green spots in it, look like what agate Dad calls galaxy stones. They are so cool when they are cut!! By the way...I loved ‘magate’!!
I think "amygdaloidal basalt" is the proper term, but I like Taylor's name for it. I found one with little agates in it earlier in the summer and slabbed it. ruclips.net/video/Sd0jEUEf2d0/видео.html
Hello to your sister Sally . I love her rock and beach glass pictures😊 You picked up a butterscotch colored rock you said you didn't know what it was. Could it have been jasper ? It will be interesting to see how some of them tumble out and a couple looked like they would be interesting to slab.
@3:48 Could that have been a granodiorite? @9:37 In the PNW, that rock is referred to as Turtle Rock and is some type of coral in a matrix that was formed many years in the past in a warm ocean climate. Sally was on a roll with finding beach glass and agates. Was nice to see you both enjoying the day....a while back....thanks for taking us along.
I have never heard of granodiorite, but it sure looks similar. Thanks for the tip. Maybe @Capt Paul will help us out. I don't think the green turtle rock is fossilized coral.
@@captpaul8827 We discussed this rock before. Someone called it variolite, but you said it is more properly called variolitic basalt. Do "variolitic" and "orbicular" mean the same thing? I understand that "orbicular" must mean that it has orbs. That makes sense. I don't understand "variolitic" as well.
love the artwork at the end too! I’ve been binge watching a lot of these videos - Will be in Chicago this summer for a music conference and the last time I was there I swam in the cold water but this time I might drive north a ways and see if I can find some rocks - The ones I saw last time when I went up to see my cousin in Kenosha were sort of round and they looked a lot like lime stone or grays and dark gray - One of my friends is an administrator at Interlochen also which would most likely have a lot better rocks around that area - so next time I go see him, I will definitely go on some hunts - i’m from Louisiana so not close at all
There are some good rocks around Interlochen, but I have never hunted the other side of the lake so I can't help you with your Chicago visit. Good luck though!
Wow you got some sweet finds ! Id swear a few of those agates may be opals. Just from the iron stains. If you look a austrailian opal it often has the same red material on the surface. I am not saying they are opals. I dont see any play of color but its incredably similar! So cool! Sally does impressive work!
No, I put out a community post earlier today explaining that I filmed extra videos this summer to get us through the winter. I'll be showing a summer beach video every other week with lapidary videos on the weeks in between.
FANTASTIC! OMG...I'm sitting here yelling with you...lol...what a wonderful, wonderful time! Are you at your sis's now? And she lives on the lake? Absolutely FABULOUS...and yea...we got color in the water here eh! Hi Sally! Thrilled to see another rock hound and your artistry is amazing!
Nope, not at all. I have six sisters and very little memory of the oldest three living at home. I did grow up on an inland lake and would occasionally look for nice rocks on the beach, but we usually just left them on the beach when we were done. I think Sally is the only one who really likes rocks, and I think she got that from me when I started going up there to hunt rocks a few years ago. I got into this through my son. He loved polished rocks in gift shops as a kid, so we bought him a tumbler for Christmas when he was about 12 years old. That was only about nine years ago. He still likes rocks but lost interest in tumbling a couple years after he got the tumbler. I haven't lost interest yet.
I liked your comment about the one rock being Alpena HS colors, rather than MSU colors. I myself am a die hard Spartan, Class of 1979...but I coached softball for the Wolverine High School Wildcats, whose team colors are? You guessed it, Blue and Gold! It was always hard to put on the uniform, and I always had to let people know it was Wildcats colors, NOT UofM colors!
Yeah, it's tough when you have to change colors. I went to Alcona High where the colors were blue and gold and the helmets looked exactly like Michigan's helmets. I made it through two schools with the same colors and then ended up teaching at one with the wrong colors for thirty years.
Some prehnite looks a lot like Thomsonite. In fact, it's often referred to as U.P. Thomsonite. I was finding the more common green stuff, but it can have copper in it and be pink. It's the pink stuff that looks like Thomsonite. Here's a short article. There are several other articles on this site if you want to read more. www.snobappealjewelry.com/blog/thomsonite-and-prehnite/

Where I grew up it wasn't far from saylorville lake... I remember being strapped in to fish by the dam.
I live close to another creek the water is usually ankle deep and all the children go Rockhounding with me. We get lots of granites and quartz.
@@rebeccaofsunnybrookefarm8469 It's sad when the places we remember from childhood change like that. I'm lucky to live in a part of the state that isn't growing very fast. We have a lot of natural areas in northern Michigan.
I just love your accents. ♥️ You guys sound so much like a cousin of mine who grew up in Cleveland. I really love Sally’s art. 🖼
Accents? We don't have accents!
@@MichiganRocks 🗣😂
I know I have an accent-living in the UP does that to you! Thank you!
Really enjoyed beachcombing with you both.
Sally those pictures are fantastic
It was nice having you along. Sally does good work, doesn't she?
I’m glad you could come along and happy you enjoyed the pictures!
5:25 They call it galaxy stone or amygdaloidal basalt. It has little pieces of jasper and agates inside the host rock basalt. You said you didnt know what it was, so now you know ;)
Great rocks today, you found more than your fair share of agates on this one, and your sister did great too!
Thanks Tina. I think that's the same results I got. Cool looking rock though. Where is it that you find a lot of it?
@@MichiganRocks We are on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. My friend and I are rockin' the beaches.
@@tinareaume7484 Capt Paul said he thought that was orbicular basalt.
@@MichiganRocks Well, that sounds right. We have a lot of different rocks here, that wouldn't be here except for the glaciers that brought them in.
Loved the walk. Love your art Sally.
Thank you!!
Very please to meet the artist, well done, thanks for sharing with us! Have a nice weekend!
Thanks Ana!
Your sister is dope now I want to make my rocks into art 🖼
Go for it!
Sally’s pebble art is so cool! So creative!
Yep, she does a really nice job with that.
That was thoroughly enjoyable! You and your sister are both very creative. You must have fun when you get together. Thanks for sharing this!
We do have fun. It helps that we both enjoy looking for rocks too.
I look forward to Rob visiting every summer!
Great hunt, love your sister’s work. I have a sister Sally, too, which is always a ton of fun when I’m teaching my students the order of operations.
I just retired from teaching math for 30 years. Wouldn't having an Aunt Sally be more useful?
@@MichiganRocks yes indeed, fortunately my sister Sally was named after my Aunt Sally.
@@betsyallen4821 Well that's convenient.
@@MichiganRocks Yes , i love your videos. They are the highlight of my week . Also , i like interacting with you too.❤ 😍🥰😇💜💙💚👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@Indyanas_ocean_view Thanks, I feel like I'm getting to know some of the frequent commenters, but I don't know what most of you even look like. If we met on the beach, you guys would know me, but I wouldn't know you. It's sort of strange.
@@MichiganRocks Well , you might be able to recognize me 😉. I don't look much different from my profile pic. ❤ 😍🥰😇💜💙💚👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@Indyanas_ocean_view But your profile picture is tiny.
Love the video ! Your sister is very talented.
I agree!
Thank you! I surprise myself sometimes.
Love your sister's work and eye for detail.
Me too!
Thanks, Dan!
Sally’s art work is great. I really liked the hiker image.
I agree. I tried to make a picture once and all I could make were daisies. That's harder than it looks.
Nice hunt!!! Really love your sister art, impressive!!! Thank for share it with us!
Yep, Sally makes really cool pictures.
Another great video with some amazing finds. Love the pictures your sister made. A great way to display the rocks. Really enjoyed the video. Davin
Thanks Davin. It was really fun to have Sally in the video with me and to show off her pebble art. What she does with rocks is so different than what I do, it was fun to share that with everyone.
Such fun with your sister. Love her art!

Thank you, Sherry!
@@sallyfortin8490 I’ve “liked” you on Facebook 😁👍
Cool and thank you!
Oh her excitement with her agate!!!!! So rad! “Sally’s having a good day! Heck yeah!”
(Commenting as I watch, sorry).
Hello. I love your enthusiasm!
It was nice to meet your talented sister. Very nice variety of cool rocks at this location.
What's fun is that other beaches in the area have completely different rocks.
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your sister's art! It figures--your petoskey turtles and jasper crosses--it must run in the family. Thanks for the video.
I think we're the only two rock hunters in the family.
Great to meet your sister. Her art work is very cool. I learned about a couple new rocks today: prehnite and "magate" (I didn't think you'd spell it "maggot"). Don't think I've heard of either before. Good stuff Rob.
Maygate is my own term for a rock that may be an agate. I find a fair number of maygates.
Oh man I want to go walk those rock beaches, I would definitely need to drive myself cause my rock collection would be HUGE! Nice pick ups! That rock sis had that was pink resembles rose quarts thanks for sharing!
Lake Superior beaches sure are a lot of fun. Lots of great rocks on this little walk.
Awesome rocks! Thanks for sharing
Glad you liked it, Penny.
#8 & 13....Go Green!😍😂 Love love Sally’s work!! I can’t decide which is my favorite! The rosary is amazing! Does she sell them; have a website?

How great to meet your sister and see her art! Another great day at the beach :)
I think pretty much all days at the beach are great.
@@MichiganRocks AGREED!
My rocks from the summer are almost all done tumbling in the first stage now. I'll be posting them as they finish in future.
Hello Mary-Anne and thank you.
Beautiful art work
@3:48 Could that have been a granodiorite? @9:37 In the PNW, that rock is referred to as Turtle Rock and is some type of coral in a matrix that was formed many years in the past in a warm ocean climate. Sally was on a roll with finding beach glass and agates. Was nice to see you both enjoying the day....a while back....thanks for taking us along.
I have never heard of granodiorite, but it sure looks similar. Thanks for the tip. Maybe @Capt Paul will help us out.
I don't think the green turtle rock is fossilized coral.
@@MichiganRocks It looks like a diorite, but would have see in person. The green spotted rock, I believe, is an orbicular basalt.
@@captpaul8827 I think you identified the green rock for me in another video once, maybe a Rocks in a Box episode.
@@MichiganRocks I believe I did, for the life of me couldn't remember...
What a great walk and hunt with your sis.
You both found some good ones
I left there a happy camper. Literally, because I slept in a tent.
@@MichiganRocks
Oh indeed a good nites sleep in the outdoors is memorable these days.
Enjoyed seeing your sister’s art. I’ve often wondered what people do with the beach glass that they find. Nice beach too.
I really like that beach. I was there once before, but we hunted more of the beach this time.
Glass findings are my favorite!
Wow you got some sweet finds ! Id swear a few of those agates may be opals. Just from the iron stains. If you look a austrailian opal it often has the same red material on the surface. I am not saying they are opals. I dont see any play of color but its incredably similar! So cool! Sally does impressive work!
No opals here that I've ever heard of. You're right about Sally, she does nice work.
Wow, love the images, how fun was that rock hunt, nice to see your sister, love her work 😃👍✌️
It's always nice to see Sally, and I agree, her pebble art is really cool.
Thank you!
Me thinks this was not filmed recently!
No, I put out a community post earlier today explaining that I filmed extra videos this summer to get us through the winter. I'll be showing a summer beach video every other week with lapidary videos on the weeks in between.
Beautiful rocks, especially that Green and White beauty. Both my wife and I notice those colors quite a bit Up North here. 27 to 24.
You know I can ban people, right? Be careful, or you might get voted off the island.
This was filmed in Late July, so I'm not there now. Sally lives in the area, but not on the lake.
Haha, thank you! I wish it were still summer here, but we do love the different seasons.
Hi Sally! I know the area well..I'm in Houghton now, born and raised in Lake Linden...Love it!!
You must of grown up with a family of rock hunters, how fun.
Rock hunting with family.... priceless!
It sure is!
I'm guessing Prehnite looks similar to Quartz? I'll have to Google it. Lots of nice finds! Very nice to meet your sister and see her art lovely work
Some prehnite looks a lot like Thomsonite.
