  • Summarizing is an important skill for reading and understanding social studies material. A summary is a short, accurate account of the main points of a piece of writing or a graphic. It always includes the main idea of the material, which is often in the title. When you summarize a piece of writing, you restate the main points in a shortened fashion. These are usually the topic sentences or main points of all the paragraphs that support the overall main idea. Here’s a guide on how to summarize a historical passage.
