Mariah's runs and riffs are the most complex but they never ever sound overdone..Like you said, they sound like natural extensions of the melody..It's because she has pretty much the best musicality ever..I do not worship her like most lambs..I see her limitations..But she is most definitely the best in runs and riffs..She is almost impossibly agile that when you pay close attention, you hear notes in her riffs you would initially miss..Her freaking musicality is unmatched..

@@AnthonyJP91 Inconsistency and lack of development in certain parts of her voice. All because of her nodules unfortunately.
@@AnthonyJP91 She can be quite inconsistent because of her nodules..That's why she has made the habit of dodging big notes and lipping..

Of her time, not all time, she had to many flaws and inconsistencies, TOTPs was never live, it was miming.

To me, the image of her prime vocal is like the early sunshine in the morning touching on your face but you can still feel the chill in the air which makes you feel her voice becomes even warmer.

I’m in my 20s and I have to say she’s the greatest singer ever! My generation can’t imagine this level of talent
5:41 when you said “Jumping between different registers” reminded me of the bridge of her song When I Saw You.
She sang “with no beginning and without and end” and the way she played with both a riff and the register when she said “end” has always amazed me. She goes from hard and resonant, to soft and whispery. I love that so much. It’s so short and simple, probably goes unnoticed, but I just love how she’s able to jump back and forth between different registers in a matter of milliseconds !

Thank you for bringing that gem back to us. Everybody knows „hero“ and „without you“, some know „emotions“, but this really is a dark horse from her 1995 Album - and probably one of her best performances. So emotional and full of feelings. The nineties were so great! And I also love the „flying hands“!

It's just the perfect Daydream era moment, she's in full command of her powers and everything is smooth, rich cocoa buttery heaven and yet she was at the worst place emotionally. i think what sets her apart from apart from her peers or people like beyonce who she gets compared to, is just the ease of transitions and that fact that in her prime she mastered every facet of the human voice. Her lows were great, mixed/belting was amazing, head voice and whistle were unmatched. Like you said her runs were OTT but served the melody and didnt sounds like christinas messy runs. Plus that tone is insane, you either have a pleasant tone or you dont and she got really lucky with a buttery yet distinguishable tone that worked perfectly with her skillful voice.
Exactly, I cannot stand Christina's runs and don't listen to her. Her runs always sound the same and don't match the melody.

with techniques and skills (runs/riffs, melisma, etc) there’s tori kelly, jojo, beyonce (a legend and has a whole different skill and techniques but i wanna include her), and some ppl say ariana.

Her voice is amazing. Hearing her in her prime (instead of the overplayed Christmas music) takes me back to high school when it was impossible to escape her songs on the radio. For your next reaction you should check out Jacob Collier's performance of Fix You (by Coldplay) from the Live for There With Care series. I am going through a heartbreaking divorce and his song has been playing on loop to give me something beautiful to keep me going until I get to better times.

One of my favorite performances of OpenArms. The ending run always gets me 😍 . Her voice is one of the most agile voices I've ever heard along with Tori Kelly, and no matter how many times her tone changes it stays beautiful.

Her runs are definitely complex. Among the most intricate I've heard for sure but, for me, what sets her apart is the ability to transition so seamlessly. There is no break, no pause, no disconnect. I can't see how you get better at transitioning. Also her versatility with the different vocal registers in her arsenal, her pleasant tone, buttery smooth, young sounding but powerful at the same time and the fact that she writes and produces her stuff. If she was also a proficient instrumentalist then few people in the industry could relate. Few do as it is.

its ok. one thing about esau is that they will always insist that they or someone close to them is the best of everything. to use an age old adage, all bs must be seen for what it is. they, all of them, will always be in second place to the voice.
1996 was the last year of her prime. After that the voice was gone. Whistle and low remained but the high belting and thickness to her voice - just gone.
Wrong. Vision Of Love performances from 1998 on tour, My All performance from 1997 SNL & Butterfly performance from SNL 1997 proved she could still hit her upper belts. I'd say after 1998, her upper belts became cut in half. Her voice remained thick 'til 1999 tho.
Really after her "prime" her voice only became more inconsistent, but she still had very good performances.

Once you finish up on all of Maria's songs then go to Kim Sohyang next. She is a 43 year old Korean dreamed the Korean Mariah Carey. She is a cancer survivor, so much passion in her voice. Her high belts are crazy good. She turned down a recording contract from sony in 2020. She is a devout Christian and sings only to give comfort. Check out her version of Whitney Houston's song I have nothing.
