The hump is for inverted skinning, you slide the spine against the meat and push it forward, unzips the skin as the tip stays above piercing height, and you don't cut into organs.
Nice! I love the look of that. Thanks for another good review Sootch.
Its a beautiful knife and I ordered one yesterday from SMKW ! I can't wait to get it! Great video bud!
Live within minutes of SMKW, thanks for visiting our area. Great knife!
I just got it at SMKW today. Its my first ESEE and so far I love it.
I'm getting some "The Revenant" vibes from this blade... Sweet!
Very Cool knife Sootch00. Thanks for the knowledge about Nessmuk style knives too. As always long live the republic my friend !!!
Thanks for another great review. I'd already decided my next knife would be the ESEE JG3 (for an EDC and small carver), now I'm thinking I'll order a JG5 along with it. Something about James Gibson's designs really appeal to me, maybe one day I'll order one of his customs.
Thanks for a good review. I purchased the ESEE PR4 Kephart, but think I need the Nessmuk too. ESEE makes great knives! Like Dave C. says, "Two is one and one is none."
Just ordered this one looks like a great companion to my Ashley game knife
Thanks great review
Looks like a great skinning knife.
Smokey Mountain knife works is 45 minutes away from my home town of Onidea Tennessee..awesome place!
just ordered one. thanks.
Just watched your review thank you.
LOVE SMKW!
I just ordered the jg5 couple days ago from SMKW can’t wait to get it I have the izula and the 3,4 and 6 I think it’ll be a nice addition to my Esee line
Nice review. I just ordered one.
Love it!👍
Nice review, which cost me to watch since I had to order one. Thanks
Thanks for the Review. I always like an honest opinion whether its good or bad.
Nice review Sootch. Interesting blade design. I really like it. It really looks like a very old design.
Thanks Kirk!
Been looking for a reasonable full tang option
Sootch, I just like your reviews!!!
PS: "Bring some bugspray! Uaaaah!" :-)
I like this knife fantastic 👏. Think it's a keeper 👍
Very beautiful knife
Just got one for my birthday from the ol lady. Guess I’ll keep her around.
Very cool knife.
I like your introduction my friend
have owned the blade for a year or so .... love it for a number of reasons... i prep wood ...etc. its my go to if i am camping or fishing
Video said the knife wasn't good for light batoning, but I think it would be great for that. Since you own a JG5, what do you think?
@@jazztoad54 its a thick blade ...it works well for that IMHO... but thats just me... I have used it for that and no damage to the tool... again IMHO
I had the same question. Did you end up buying and do you have any feedback?
Great video
That first knife (Rowen) has a profile of a traditional butcher knife.
Sootch loves feathering
I think I am going to get one, I have a Tops Brakimo, so I am going to try and get a costume sheath to hold both knives. I was looking at the Esee 4, but I think this will be the perfect combo.
I became jealous when I heard you say "I was in SMKW." That's like Disney World for me.
💚💚💚
Hey Sooch, could you do a review on rechargeable lanterns?
Thanks for the Review! for clarification it's "ESEE"
Changed it! lol! I knew better. Thanks
What does "Rowen" stand for? Ie. Name, acronym, etc..
@@Mycolddeadhand Rowen is the manufacturer that ESEE works with to create their product line (minus a few folders that carry the ESEE name but are made by Blue Ridge knives and their overseas factories in Taiwan)
@@Logan2070 thanks. Im dumb, tried looking it up and have been looking into their company for about 6 weeks now and like what i see/hear. I finally ordered the Esee Laser Strike today! Super stoked
Logan2070 well done ! Couldn’t have said it better myself.
I like the lifetime warranty no matter
It has batoned well look at other videos
My "hobby" for many years was wilderness survival with minimal equipment and a good knife was absolutely essential...I carried a Rigid R1 and still do...A good blade will cost you some money but it's well worth it to avoid failures in serious situations...Though my days in the wilderness are over, due to physical issues this is still a blade I might just treat myself to...I still admire a good useful knife that is well made...Thanks for the tip and review...
As soon as I pulled it out of the box I knew that the handle wouldn’t work. Too thin and feels bad. Sent it back to SMKW
Is the chip comfortable?
i would like to get one but i cant find one anywhere
Like the blade. Hate the handle
Sens why out there are different prices esee haves it for around 200dollars and other sites for under 130? Btw great video great knife loved it from the moment I saw it and I want it so bad😎😎😎love from greece
That ESEE JG5 is the best knife I’ve ever owned. It’s truly brilliant.
Do you baton with it?
@@camutk light batoning but it's not designed for it. Nessmuk proposed a system now called the Nessmuk trio. He carried a tool for chopping (2 bit hatchet), a fixed blade (this knife's design) and a folder (he called it a strong pocket knife). Each tool has a role and the hatchet would be used for splitting wood.
Sleep hah, that’s what I’ve got... a folder, a hatchet and of course jg5... stoked.
PVC for survival situations
I like thin blades I can make it sharp
Well, now I know what I'm gonna buy myself with my Christmas bonus money
$85 on sale at SMKW now
Scales are really bad, I’m not sure if I’ll send it back or try to redo the scales.
When I was 16 years old I bought a buck 110 I am now 62 years old I used that knife for years. I even carried it as an officer. Now I have 20 knives. I’m sorry I’ve had enough of knives reviews. I Have a lot of history behind the knives i’ve been using for years.
I think if one was into buckskinning and black powder, this would be okay to use.
As a felow bucksinner of over3 years, I would have to agree with you. Traitonal blade shape and outward appearance it should fit in nicely.
So much so, I just ordered one myself.
Why did he name it the Barfight?
Ka-Bar Becker Kephart is one to look at. Want this one.
You didn't get an ESEE 5? I'm looking for ESEE 6 with half serration
I have an ESEE 6 so I wanted a 4 as well. Thanks
ESEE, You spelled it wrong :p
Thanks. it's fixed.
I'll stick with my k bar, thank you very much
slice slice slice slice banana knife do do de dodo do
Cutting meat on metal lid, not cool, good way to damage the blade.
Just get an Old Hickery. same thing and cheaper.
Walmart Gerber is more my price range.
ESEE is grate knife company but its RB3 which design I love very much is big disappointment, its edge retention is very bad (1095 heat-treatment is bed) .
Oh contrair my friend. 1095 is a ver good hard use steel an holds a respectable edge and is easy to sharpen. What in the hell are you cutting?
Rowen heat treatment is one if not the best heat treatment in the business especially for 1095 and sv3n steels.
It's a thick blade. You have no idea what a real slicer is. Try custom hunting knives from true craftsmen, then you might see. That's an esee. They are thick crowbars, even when the spine is only 3mm thick
I apologize in advance. But. It is “butt ugly.” “sorry” if you find that offensive.
1095 steel?
Low cost steel for pricy knives... Wtf Esse?
Capitalist option ?
For Usa its "normal" lol
So it's not the new designer steels....still very serviceable and usefull for their intended hard use and application of bushcraft in the field.
Everyone is a keyboard warrior....try some hands on real world use in the field before you critique. There are no one size fits all, doesn't exist in the real world.
