Humility makes you funny. It also just makes you a better person all around.
Ignoring the last bit (that as several people have noted, kinda contradicts the point he was making), I agree with Jim. And Chris Rock made the same point: “Stop telling kids they can be anything they want to be. You can be anything you’re good at, as long as they’re hiring. And even then it helps to know somebody.” Reality!
"Chase the dream not the competition."
The problem is that winning the competition has become central to many dreams. Perhaps as a result of deliberate social engineering?
Please explain what you are suggesting here. Who is doing this social engineering, how, and to what end?
@@davebartholome2924 I mean it's not hard to figure out. The world is in large part shaped by corporate gatekeepers who turn creative expression into a competition for the limited resources they often control. The artist must eat and put a roof over their head, but various industries and "king makers" have positioned themselves to determine who succeeds and who doesn't, who will have a career and who won't. Jim's advice to ignore the competition is in that sense, somewhat silly and naive.
Thiel talks about this in Zero to One. In capitalism, competition is for losers. It's not a social engineering force though. It's that human default to mimicing what we see around us as an heuristic to figure out what to do. Useful for finding the mess hall when you join the army (a few good men) but counterproductive when trying to outperform the market in a pursuit. Ie. business, comedy, etc. See also: Pareto Distribution, Price's Law.
@@sagashilabs Nailed it.
@@sagashilabs While I haven't read his book, I did watch his talk about it. It's an interesting perspective and you have a point that mimicking is to a degree part of the human condition. However, if you seek to maintain monopoly, it seems like a strategic move to encourage the youth to compete for employment under you rather than to start their own businesses.
Not the usual Off Camera interview I was expecting...
EXACTLY the Jim Jeffries interview I SHOULD HAVE expected.
Glad I’m not the only finds that shit obnoxious
Yeah, the endless positive-thinking speeches and memes on FB drive me nuts. Just make wise, reasonable plans and move along.
The Secret is that there is no secret.
@R_TatpurushaShivam I'm Canadian. I have only lived in Japan. You're smart - you're watching this and learning as you go. We all are 😌
Never trues words uttered, we all know or have seen or watched "Successful people" who are neither content nor really experiencing their "dream" because of a myraid of reasons. Contentment is being "content" in the moment, with neither regret for what happened years ago, last year, yesterday or thig morning. It's an Eastern mindset of being/participating in the here/now, rather than the "If I only had ..." or "If she only loved me ..." or "He's got a _______ "
Find that one productive, creative endeavor, which excites, stimulates & motivates one beyond anything else. Then pursue it with "Reckless Abandon" without regard to what others say, think or judge. You'll be on the path to finding something greater than the never fulfilling pursuit of Ego/Self.
Martin Scorsese: “I never liked the phrase follow your dreams. If your dreaming you’re sleeping”
Since going mad is a possible ending. whether you follow your aspirations or settle for a shit job, you may as well go for it. But you better be doing it for the ride itself, not the end goal.
I also love how on reddit you get these people who say. "I don't care much about death" I'm like yes it's easy to say when your ass is not on the line.
Just as, "There are no atheists in foxholes."
It's the old saying about not putting all the eggs in one basket. It's fine to have dreams but expecting it to come true and not having a back-up plan is a very risky business indeed.
Right, and obviously Carey and Washington aren't suggesting otherwise.
Exactly. Everyone of them state that they purposely didn’t have a backup plan. I have friends who did chase their dreams, got a little bit there, stumbled, then failed. They then went back to whatever they did before. I told all of them to keep their heads up because millions of people NEVER even go after their dreams to begin with. No shame in trying and failing. At least they gave it a shot.
@@johnbalk6091 Succeeding at the level of a Denzel or whatnot is really about personality and drive, and not about "the industry." Carey and Washington probably see the world through men who were determined to master their craft better than their counterparts, and in that sense, their success was inevitable. If you're going to fuck around and half-ass it, then no, take the safe route. But how many actors are really truly devoted to saying "I'm going to be better than Denzel Washington" and then put together a plan and a work ethic to actually make that happen? Not too god damned many. 1 in 1000 probably.
I know those exact motivational videos he’s talking about 😂 I’ve fallen pray to their inspiration
Nah, I don't agree with Jim's stance on this at all. Going to some job you fucking hate and dying inside day by day because it offers security, and then going to your deathbed tortured that you didn't give it a shot, is potentially far far worse than giving it everything you had for as long as you could, and knowing that you tried. Not only that, "making it" isn't all there is. Becoming good at something you love is a reward in itself. Doesn't matter if you "made it" or not. Dying inside in a cubicle is immensely painful, and perhaps so is not making it, but it's up to the individual to decide which form of suffering is more excruciating. Denzel and Carey aren't promising you that you'll make it, they're casting their vote for the pain of the attempt.
I agree with you.
See the quote be Theodore Roosevelt about being the man in the arena. Daring Greatly.
I agree artistry
I think you missed his point completely. He was saying to stay at the shitty day job and die inside. He’s suggesting that the person who should be ushering positive thinking is the person who shot his/her shot, it didn’t pan out, but they’re still happy, NOT the people who made it. You don’t disagree with him. You’re just arguing different points.
Wasn’t *
Shits on Jim Carrey
Shits on Denzel Washington
So now he’s an expert too...GTFOH
This has been my same profound realization of this year. It’s survivorship bias, and it’s not helping the world become better.
This guy funny he should have never been cancelled
Has he been cancelled? Good. He is the one jackass who deserves it
Gotta love Jim.
Love Jim. He’s so right.
Like robin williams s father said, bettter have a backup profession, like welding. And argon welders make mad dosh.
Just me or did he contradict himself in the end?
"The secret to life ... is finding contentment ... be happy with your lot in life...."
-- moments later --
"Chase the dream ... is the most important thing I can tell...."
So be happy with where you are, but also chase the dream?
I thought that as well.
Yeah, at the very least, it was an entirely separate idea, if not a contradictory one. The whole quote was, “Chase the dream, not the competition.” You know, stay true to your own vision, don’t try to figure out what’s selling this season. . . OK, I get that, but what does that have to do with “Be happy with your lot in life.”
In "Chasing the dream" ... one can find "Contentment" ... but not always if it's not something that satisfies you on several levels of your being, Vs. just Ego.
This guy can say “ If a dingo ate a Muslim baby, it would throw it up” and not get cancelled. Fascinating.
Justin Trudeau got away with blackface if thats not cancel worthy I don't know what is
Jim cutting through the other Jim's bs like a hot knife through butter. Good on ya Jim.
Yep.
I'll bet he's been misunderstood a lot in his life.
Someone finally said it. We have got to hear from those who risked it all to chase "the dream" and what they're doing now instead. How do those who didn't "make it" come to accept that it's not for them? People have got to stop glorifying success like it's as easy as doing what you love. Not all that you love pays the bills.
Nah. Anyone with half a brain knows that everyone doesn't make it. Denzel and Jim Carrey aren't talking to the ones who will ultimately pick a quiet dead life behind a desk. They're talking to the people who are willing to put it all on the line, who have to give it a shot. And those people will never be understood by the guy who ultimately decided to castrate himself in a cubicle.
@Catharsis It "doesn't do shit," as far as you're concerned. If you're making the argument that Washington and Carey -- should not -- be trying to inspire people, well that's fucking stupid. If they want to, they can. If the message isn't for you, so be it. You're not the intended audience. Not every statement uttered out of a person's mouth has to be relevant for all of humanity. I don't even know what you're arguing against.
@@artistryartistry7239 Yes yes. Give it a shot, put it all on the line.. The point here is we'd like to hear from those who are putting it all on the line yet still aren't getting paid for it.. There are people out there who are chasing the dream and also other things to pay bills like waiting tables, cleaning, etc. It's just that they are still dreamers but would have a different take on the case. I'd like to have that - some parts of the world work to live.
@Dixon and Film Good point here! Perhaps, it is wrong to label "success" and "failure" separately. And look at it as part of the journey instead. Life does have its way of letting you know what is for you and not. Thanks for this. Another thing too is to define what success is for us - being able to what we love is pretty successful enough. Just would be nice to have that as the main thing. All im doing is to feed that love.
@Dixon and Film I wish you all the best too bro.. keep that love!
He contradicted himself at the end
I didn’t know Jeffries was even a comedian!
He's full of crappp. You are SUPPOSED to get advice from successful people.
You wouldn't ask for stock advice from someone not doing well in the market. You wouldn't ask for a recipe from a shitty cook.
This guy is completely wrong.
This.
Thought he was gonna show us a good side of himself we haven't seen...
Twins?
If people going to "fail" in life - whatever "fail" means - doesn't it make more sense to fail at what you love doing, as opposed to failing at what you hate doing?
jim got exposed by avi yemini
Eh nope..
Wow this was so real I’m making a RUclips comment
Jim did live in car, Greg did best but drugs killed him, but that’s not a bad thing, if the movie sucks walk out do stay and know you wasted you time being right
